Laguna Fabrics, TENCEL™, And creora® Spandex Unite For The Natural Selection Collection, A Low-Impact Fabric Line Made In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — July 17, 2023 — Laguna Fabrics — a circular knitting mill — has partnered with Lenzing AG, manufacturer of TENCEL™ branded lyocell fibers and Hyosung, manufacturer of creora® spandex, to launch the Natural Selection Collection. This sophisticated fabric collection made with TENCEL lyocell and creora’s bio-based spandex fiber, prioritizes style, functionality, and environmental responsibility.

Addressing the need for certified eco-friendly fibers in fashion, Laguna Fabrics leverages TENCEL Lyocell and creora bio-based spandex to create a collection that excels in performance and sustainability.

The Natural Selection Collection includes refined single jerseys, ribs, and interlocks suitable for contemporary women’s collections, including premium tops, first-layer shapewear, and form-fitting dresses.

“Our commitment to low-impact fibers has been ongoing since 2001, with over 70 percent of our products crafted from natural materials,” said David Roshan, representative of Laguna Fabrics. “By partnering with Hyosung, we successfully incorporate its creora bio-based spandex made with 30 percent renewable resources. This alternative stretch fiber performs exceptionally well, addressing the challenge of implementing sustainable options.”

Creora bio-based spandex replaces 30 percent of petroleum-based resources with bio-based materials sourced from industrial field corn. Recent third-party life cycle assessments reveal a 20 reduction in carbon footprint compared to regular spandex production.

“We are delighted to partner with Laguna Fabrics on this new curated collection. Consumers are demanding high-performance, comfortable fabrics backed-up with genuine sustainability benefits — which this collaboration between Laguna, Hyosung and Lenzing delivers”, said Simon Whitmarsh-Knight, Hyosung’s global marketing director – Textiles.

TENCEL Lyocell fibers are made from sustainably sourced wood and produced through a unique closed loop production process which recovers and reuses the solvents used, minimizing the environmental impact of production.

“The Natural Selection Collection exemplifies how important collaboration is in achieving and creating sustainable solutions for our industry,” said Erica Redd, business development manager at Lenzing Group. “Lenzing and the TENCEL brand are committed to working with supply chain partners to develop innovations and new fabrications that advance sustainability while meeting the performance needs of consumers.”

The Natural Selection Collection not only offers sustainability and performance but also proudly bears the “Made in Los Angeles” label. Laguna Fabrics, TENCEL Lyocell Fibers, and creora spandex are dedicated to advancing the use of bio-based materials and responsible sourcing practices.

The Natural Selection Collection will debut at Texworld New York July 18-20 in Lenzing’s booth (G14) as part of the Lenzing Pavilion and Hyosung’s booth (538) at Functional Fabric Fair New York.

F. Schumacher & Co. Announces New Corporate Headquarters In New York City

NEW YORK CITY — April 3, 2023 — F. Schumacher & Co, an interior design house whose rich history spans centuries, announces a new office in the heart of Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood in the historic Devlin building. Moving from Midtown Manhattan, F. Schumacher & Co.’s (FS&CO) new office space reflects the company’s identity as a style-forward and innovation-driven design powerhouse.

FS&CO was founded and established in New York City in 1889 by Frenchman Frederic Schumacher and was a pioneer in the world of interior design, getting its start by bringing the art of French textiles to the United States.  It is a sixth-generation family-owned company.  Its new headquarters, located at 459 Broadway and Grand Street are in the landmarked Devlin building, constructed in 1861, the original home to the Devlin department store.  The heritage and impressive history of the 459 Broadway building make it the perfect home for FS&CO’s new offices. In fact, F. Schumacher & Co.’s original office on lower Fifth Avenue was located in a similar era building.

Situated over four floors that are flooded with natural light, the new office space is a fluid, shared setup that is designed to inspire creative energy. The new space reflects the identity of the innovative design house and its collection of brands, including Schumacher, Patterson Flynn, Backdrop, and Frederic magazine. The office meets the needs of these rapidly expanding teams with increased meeting spaces, lounge areas with large library tables, and even a rooftop.

“This move is much needed and symbolic of FS&CO’s growth and evolution over the past few years,” said Timur Yumusaklar, CEO of the parent company F. Schumacher & Co. “It made sense for FS&CO to make its home in a building that shares a celebrated 130+ year history, and we’re honored to continue a legacy that inspires us to provide forward-thinking designs to interior designers and design aficionados.”

“The space is a perfect marriage of American and European design, which speaks to our unique heritage: Frederic Schumacher came to NY from Paris bringing his passion for European decorative arts with him.  Although we think of ourselves as a quintessentially American company that has an ‘I can do anything’ American spirit, our European roots always come through.  In the new space, Cappellini and Cassina furniture from Italy is used throughout, along with pieces from the American brand Herman Miller.  And we’ve used our own brands’ fabrics and wallpapers that run the gamut, from French toiles to graphic abstracts from our American artist collaborators.  Dotted throughout are accessories from French makers like India Mahdavi and Non Sans Raison.  The overall effect feels cool and sophisticated, modern but warm, and it doesn’t hurt that the ceilings are 12 feet high!”, says Dara Caponigro, FS&CO’s Chief Creative Officer who is spearheading the project with Stephanie Cano, Director of Space Planning.

LAIRD Apparel Launches Women’s Collection: GABBY

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — July 13, 2023 — LAIRD Apparel, the high-performance activewear and lifestyle brand, has launched its women’s collection, GABBY, inspired by fitness icon Gabby Reece.

The GABBY launch was celebrated with a HIGHX fitness event led by Gabby Reece in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

“The event was intended to introduce the women’s line through a genuine channel, which is getting people together to exercise,” says founder and inspiration behind the line, Gabby Reece. “Philosophically for me and for Laird, there is this idea that helping each other move is time well spent. That is something we have always done together. So, we did the launch in the most appropriate way — we trained together. We worked hard, celebrated our desire to move and had some fun.”

The debut collection is a capsule of key performance items that are essential to any fitness wardrobe. Premium fabrics are the cornerstone of the collection and all pieces have been rigorously tested by elite athletes to ensure both functionality and fit.

“The line embodies fundamental things that are important to me. First and foremost, this is equipment for training, so it must be functional. I know many of the pieces will be worn for other different applications — maybe even more than for training itself. But the fact is, I still need them to work when I train. The other key components are the fit and the material. The pieces need to be made thoughtfully and of the highest quality. I want our customer to know that we had her in mind when we were developing the line. And, lastly, I want the pieces to look good and be something that gives you a little extra pep in your step when you train or drive your kids somewhere or run to the market or go to a meeting. In all ways, this line supports you. The pieces work well, the materials are premium, and they allow you to feel that you are ready to take on whatever you are doing throughout your day.”

GABBY is available exclusively at lairdapparel.com and in the coming months will expand to include lifestyle pieces in addition to the initial performance collection.

Loomia And Mississippi State University Team Up On A Motion Capture Wearable

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — July 13, 2023 — Loomia Technologies is working with researchers at Mississippi State University to further advance the team’s innovative wearable motion capture system. The Athlete Engineering research group at MSU has worked for several years to develop, refine and patent a sock outfitted with sensors that can capture advanced movement and pressure data–which can then be used to improve performance in prevent injury in sports, military, industrial and rehabilitation settings.

Loomia is working with the research team to further refine the prototype so it can be produced on a large scale when it hits the market.

This prototype can find ankle joint angles, center of pressure, and heel-strike and toe-off–without the need for cameras. “I am so excited to see the next phase of our vision come to life. My team has shown in the lab that our products can work, and Loomia is bringing them to life in an amazing new way,” says Erin Parker, a graduate research assistant at MSU who is leading the project.

The project is a big step forward in athletic wearables as it gives users information from movement; without the need for a large motion capture system that is typically confined to a lab or other physical space. When asked about the project, Loomia’s founder Madison Maxey had this to say: “Our mission at Loomia is to help engineers and designers make impossible products possible. We are excited to make progress towards this vision by working with Mississippi State to productize their idea for making foot tracking possible without cameras. Engineering teams like our colleagues at Mississippi State are leading the way for wearable technology, so it is a pleasure to provide a component for their work.”

Looking to the future, this technology could be used for monitoring and preventing athlete injuries — creating better outcomes and quicker recovery times. This is only the beginning of what the technology could do.
