The move comes as the latest development in Santoni Shanghai’s long-term vision to build an ecosystem that aims to reshape and consolidate the circular knitting industry. The transaction will be finalized pending approval from Chinese regulatory authorities.

The global circular knitting machine market is expected to see significant growth in the coming years, with a July 2023 report from Consegic Business Intelligence forecasting a 5.7 percent CAGR from 2023 to 2030, propelled by an increasing consumer preference for breathable and comfortable knitted fabrics as well as increasingly diversification of demand for knitted apparel. “We see our machines not simply as isolated units of production, but rather as parts of a holistic and integrated ecosystem,” Gianpietro Belotti added. “Each part of this ecosystem is interconnected with the entire industry chain, bolstered by our recent advances in digitalization and our century long expertise. The new synthesis will offer now the largest range of technical solutions available in the market, which we believe will enable us to satisfy the needs of all the investment levels. Through our partnership with Terrot, we are one step closer to fulling our vision of innovatively consolidating the entire industry.”

“With the strategic investment of Santoni, we aim to strengthen our position as the preferred solution provider to many of the world’s leading textile manufacturers and top brands as well as continue working with industry talents as we provide valuable and essential know-how to drive premium ‘Made in Germany’ textile machinery.” said Robert Czajkowski, Managing Director of Terrot GmbH. “We have found a strong, globally active partner with clear dedication to quality, performance and excellent expertise in all circular knitting segments, who understands the unique value proposition and potentials of our portfolio and with whom we can realize our growth objectives,” he added.

Herman Miller Introduces Fuld Nesting Chair Designed By Stefan Diez

ZEELAND, Mich. — September 12, 2023 — Herman Miller has introduced Fuld Nesting Chair designed in collaboration with Stefan Diez — a sleek, minimalist design that enables flexible configurations for workspaces.

With its refreshing aesthetic, Fuld is a standout among nesting chairs — enabling organizations to reconfigure space for different uses such as breakout sessions, corporate training, and educational events — without sacrificing style. Available in dipped-in-color options consisting of the seat, seat-back, and legs in one hue and dual-color combinations, Fuld elevates the experience of a nesting chair.

Fuld eschews the typical X shape of a nesting chair for a streamlined inverted Y with tubular arms. The back has a touch of elasticity, which keeps you comfortable as you shift. With its unique lines and variety of colors, the reimagined seating mainstay enlivens any space, even when stored in the open.

“We’re excited to welcome Stefan Diez to the Herman Miller portfolio after his work for the wider MillerKnoll collective,” said Malisa Bryant, senior vice president of Global Product, “Diez prioritizes sustainability and innovation within his designs which have long been core values for Herman Miller.”

A long-standing commitment to the environment drove Diez’s design of Fuld. Its minimalistic design and pioneering one-piece construction where the back rest, arms and back legs are one continuous piece. The chair comprises just two materials for easy recycling at the end of its lifecycle. An optional 3D Knit textile seat is also available that is made from 50 percent post-consumer recycled content, and because it’s knitted to the chair’s exact dimensions, there’s no fabric waste.

“I am thrilled to have designed the first nesting chair for Herman Miller,” said Stefan Diez. “There’s no other company that cares so much about engineering and quality. It’s very supportive, it’s quite unparalleled, very forward-thinking. The collaboration with Herman Miller never feels like it’s driven by constraints, but driven more by an idea. It’s clear what we’re working for: The product that comes out from the process is not a product that is a compromise, and that’s what I love.

The chair was previewed during MillerKnoll Design Days where it was announced as a MetropolisLikes Award Winner. It will be available to contract customers for purchase through Herman Miller and MillerKnoll dealers. Visit the Herman Miller website for additional details.

Seminars On Sustainable Solutions From The LYCRA Co.

WILMINGTON, Del. — September 12, 2023 — The LYCRA Co., a global developer of innovative and sustainable fiber and technology solutions for the apparel and personal care industries, announced today that two employees will be presenting at the 62nd Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress (GFC). The annual event occurs from September 13-15 at the Kulturhaus in Dornbirn, Austria. These presentations cover two key initiatives within the roadmap and vision of The LYCRA Company’s Planet Agenda platform and 2030 Sustainability Goals.

“Industrially-Compostable LYCRA® Fiber” is being presented in Hall A on September 13 at 2:20 p.m. CEST by Dr. Nicholas Kurland, innovation strategy manager at The LYCRA Co. The personal care market has been transformed through the incorporation of stretch fibers into diapers to improve fit and performance; however, to date, there are limited avenues to avoid landfill at end-of-life. This discussion proposes a solution for single-use hygiene garments, focused on upgrading the spandex with an industrially compostable fiber, in order to improve compatibility with sustainable waste streams.

“Our efforts have yielded a new fiber having accelerated degradation characteristics, without sacrificing the performance and quality typically expected from LYCRA HyFit® fiber,” said Kurland. “This breakthrough in fiber technology provides a necessary step towards the production of compost-ready diapers, enhancing sustainability and addressing a key challenge presented by single-use garments.”

Jean Hegedus, director of sustainable business development at The LYCRA Co., is presenting a lecture on “Recyclability of Garments with Stretch Fibers: Challenges and Solutions.” While garments made with stretch fibers bring a variety of benefits to consumers, such as enhanced comfort, style, and fit, they can also pose unique challenges for brands, retailers and their value chains working to advance a circular business model. This paper examines solutions for garments that contain elastane and/or elastomultiester and proposes an eco-system of solutions that are needed to bring recyclable stretch technologies to commercialization. It will take place in Hall A on September 13 at 1:30 p.m. CEST.

“We’re excited to share the results of two trials – one on recycling polyester and LYCRA® fiber and the other on recycling a fabric blend of polyester and LYCRA® T400® fiber,” said Hegedus. “We’re very encouraged by the results and believe this lays the groundwork for developing a more circular system with our stretch offerings.”

The evolution of sulfur dyestuffs

Sulfur dyes are the most commonly used dyes for color denim, with Sulfur Black 1 dominating the market. Traditional sulfur dyes are being phased out worldwide due to the toxicity of the dyeing process and wastewater contamination that are difficult to treat.

Archroma has led the evolution of sulfur dyeing since 1980, when it introduced its low-sulfide DIRESUL RDT range. Subsequent innovations have included the eco-advanced Pad-Ox dyeing process, the innovative plant-based EarthColors® sulfur dyestuffs range and the new FiberColors® range of sulfur dyestuffs based on textile waste.

DIRESUL EVOLUTION BLACK LIQ is manufactured in Spain at a state-of-the-art production facility near Barcelona, where Archroma produces best-in-class sulfur dyestuffs for mills and brands in Europe and global markets.

Alpine Group Partners With FiberTrace To Accelerate Transparency In The Fashion Supply Chain

SINGAPORE — September 11, 2023 — Alpine Group — a global textile innovation and apparel manufacturing group — and FibreTrace®, a traceability solutions provider have announced a partnership, delivering transparency throughout Alpine Group’s supply chain, whilst engaging brands and accelerating positive change across the fashion industry.

Ashok Mahtani, co-founder and chairman of Paradise Textiles, the material science and innovation hub of the Alpine Group, explains the company’s mission: “Fashion is a broken system, and we operate in a system that relies on a take-make-dispose-model. We also know that there is lots of misinformation in the industry. Brands are confused, retailers are confused, and the consumer is confused. Given the high negative impact of processing in the fashion industry, scaling climate positive technologies is an urgent action on the fashion industry’s path towards sustainability and echoes Alpine Group’s own mission to make fashion fit for the future; innovating materials and products that mitigate these impacts and enhance the positive too. The business of fashion can no longer continue in its current form. To be true game changing innovators, manufacturers must adapt to new ways of producing textiles and garments. Our partnership with FibreTrace benefits the brands we work with and empowers the end consumer with a transparent sustainability journey they can hold brands accountable to.

FibreTrace is an innovative transparency technology providing unparalleled visibility into the journey of textile fibers through a combination of digital and physical technology. A patented luminescent pigment is embedded within the raw fiber, tracked and verified with scanning devices then implemented across the global supply chain: all captured within a digital blockchain solution effectively providing a digital passport for each product. By combining FibreTrace’s state-of-the-art technology with Alpine Group’s extensive manufacturing and innovation expertise, expert network and resources, the partnership enables brands to offer their consumers the chance to trace the journey of their garments with one simple scan of a QR code on their phone — taking them on a journey from fiber to finished product and allowing them to make informed purchasing decisions.

Shannon Mercer, CEO of FibreTrace, shared his excitement about the partnership, saying, ‘We are thrilled to partner with Alpine Group to drive sustainable transformation in the textile and apparel industry. Together, we can accelerate the textile and apparel industries access to responsible and traceable fibers through to the finished garments.”

FibreTrace’s technology will be available from Q1 2024 with Paradise’s curated collection of sustainable and performance fabrics, known as the ‘Fuze Family‘, including its textile-to-textile recycling technology, GreenFuze Circle.

Clare Woodford, head of Impact at Alpine Group, expanded on the company’s vision: “In the 40 years that we have been operating, we have witnessed the industry’s evolution first-hand and we know the future deserves better. As an end-to-end business we have a unique vantage point. We have spent years scrutinizing and developing sustainable innovation in our supply chain. From changing our dye process to reduce water usage and environmental impact, to re-imagining materials — working with partners to create tree free fibers and fabrics and transforming textile waste to new fibers — to re-imagining production with our soon to launch new mill in Egypt. Now we’ve reached an inflection point. It’s not just about any one company — it’s about collective, long term, systemic change. We aim to harness our innovation and manufacturing expertise to bring brands and partners onboard our journey to thread the future of fashion, an industry and holistic ecosystem where Every Thread Counts, Every Person Counts, and Every Action Counts. We can get ahead with the right solutions that empower brands and industry partners to embrace a more sustainable model. That is the future of fashion.”

The partnership with FibreTrace precedes an exciting year of upcoming launches for Alpine Group. Alex Apparels, the Group’s Egypt based manufacturing operations, will launch its state-of-the-art facility dubbed ‘The Factory of the Future’, due to launch in Q1 2024. It will be the first LEED Gold Certified factory in the MENA region and will provide an additional 2,000+ jobs for the local community. Additionally, Paradise Textiles is expanding into Egypt with a unique, sustainable knitting and dyeing mill, bringing fabric closer to needle. The mill, due to launch in Q3 2024, is expected to create up to 500 jobs for the local community and will offer polyester filament and blended fabric knitting. The goal is to create 30 to 50 tons of fabric daily in phase one and 70 to 100 tons in phase two. Both buildings have been designed with sustainability in mind; initiatives include optimising waste- water, reducing water usage and harvesting and re-using rainwater as well as the usage of renewable energy and green energy production to achieve zero carbon emissions and work towards the company’s long term environmental goals.

CLEANR’s New Microplastic Filter Won Six “Best Of IFA 2023” Awards

CLEVELAND — September 11, 2023 — CLEANR, a new greentech venture, won six “Best of IFA 2023” awards at IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) Berlin, the world’s largest appliance industry conference, last week. This followed the company’s launch of a breakthrough microplastic filter for washing machines. Washing machine wastewater is the single largest source of microplastic pollution globally, accounting for 35% of emissions.

The awards were given to CLEANR by tech bloggers, editors, and reviewers from CNN, Ubergizmo, Gadgety, GEEKSPIN, One Cut Review, and Guiding Tech based on the company’s demo of its new internal and external microplastic filtering devices at the event.

CLEANR’s technology represents a significant breakthrough in microplastics filtration. Its design was inspired and adapted from the process that enables manta-rays and basking sharks to filter their food without clogging their gills. Instead of attracting microplastic particles to the filter surface, CLEANR’s technology creates fluid patterns to form a vortex that suspends and isolates them. This concentrates the plastics into a narrow stream that empties into a biodegradable capture unit. The process is over 300% more efficient than traditional sieve and crossflow filters.

“The recognition we’ve received from reviewers at IFA is hugely encouraging,” said Max Pennington, CEO of CLEANR. “We believe microplastic pollution can be solved in our lifetimes, and these awards show the IFA community’s strong support not only for tech innovation but for protecting the environment.”

Performance testing of CLEANR technology designed by washing machine manufacturers that hold nearly 45% of market share in Europe found that it outperformed competing solutions in nearly every test.

“We’re thankful for these awards,” said Terry Moore, executive chairman, CLEANR. “And it’s been a pleasure to participate in IFA to offer appliance makers our insights and learnings about microplastic filtration and how to help cost-effectively stop this form of pollution.”

The company estimates that widespread adoption of its technology in the EU and U.S. alone would prevent the equivalent of over 280 million plastic bags a year from entering waterways.
