NRF: Import Cargo Enters Winter Lull as Red Sea Disruptions Continue

WASHINGTON — January 8, 2024 — With the holiday season over, inbound cargo volume at the nation’s major container ports should gradually slow during the first quarter of 2024 before beginning to build again in the spring, according to the Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“This is the traditional slowdown when the supply chain gets a break after the busy holiday season, but there’s always a new challenge on the horizon,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “Attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea have been in the headlines and the disruptions caused by those attacks have once again created volatility in retail supply chains. Retailers are working with their carrier partners on mitigation strategies to limit the impact, but we are seeing longer transit times and increased costs as a result.”

Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett said any effect from the Red Sea attacks would most likely come at East Coast ports. Most cargo headed to the East Coast from Asia comes across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal. But some comes through the Red Sea before crossing the Atlantic, and carriers’ decision to go around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the attacks is adding five or six days to the month-long trip from Shanghai to Savannah via the Suez Canal. And some retailers are reporting delays of as long as two weeks.

“The number of containers arriving at East Coast ports should not be directly affected if carriers add ships to maintain capacity, but shippers will have to adjust their supply chains to cope with longer transit times,” Hackett said. “We may see an increase of Asian cargo arriving at West Coast ports and then shipped east via intermodal rail, but doing so is costly and does not save that much time. As might be expected, carriers are passing on the additional voyage costs and then some.”

U.S. ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 1.89 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units – one 20-foot container or its equivalent – in November, the latest month for which final numbers are available. That was down 8% from 2.06 million TEU in October, which was the busiest month of the year and the peak of the fall shipping season, but up 6.6% from November 2022.

Ports have not yet reported December numbers, but Global Port Tracker projected the month at 1.89 million TEU, up 9% year over year. That would bring 2023 to 22.3 million TEU, down 12.8% from 2022. Imports during 2022 totaled 25.5 million TEU, down 1.3% from the annual record of 25.8 million TEU set in 2021.

Volume is expected to rise to 1.92 million TEU in January, a year-over-year increase of 6.1%, before slowing for the remainder of the quarter. February is forecast at 1.76 million TEU, up 13.8% year over year, and March is forecast at 1.7 million TEU, up 4.7% from last year. February is traditionally the slowest month because of Lunar New Year factory shutdowns in Asia but the timing of the holiday and its impact on cargo varies. April is forecast at 1.79 million TEU, up 0.2% year over year, and May at 1.92 million, down 0.8% from last year.

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by Hackett Associates, provides historical data and forecasts for the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Port of Virginia, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades, Miami and Jacksonville on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast. The report is free to NRF retail members, and subscription information is available at NRF.com/PortTracker

Kentwool Celebrates 180th Year; Announces New Leadership

GREENVILLE, S.C. — December 20, 2023 — Kentwool Co., a worsted wool yarn manufacturing company, celebrates the close of its 180th year in business, spanning five generations of Kent family ownership.

Founded in 1843, Kentwool, formerly known as The Kent Manufacturing Co., was established in Philidelphia, P.A by Philidelphia businessman and English immigrant Thomas Kent. From its inception, Kentwool has specialized in the manufacturing of premium woolen goods. Throughout its 180-year history, the company has played a significant and substantial role in some of the most monumental moments in American history, manufacturing uniforms for the Union Army in the American Civil War and supplying the U.S. Armed Forces during both World Wars.

In 1954, under the leadership of the company’s fourth-generation owner, Tom Kent, Kentwool opened a production facility in Pickens, S.C. Sixteen years later, the company’s headquarters transitioned to South Carolina, where it remains today.

In 1992, after Tom Kent’s untimely passing, his son, the late Greenville business leader and philanthropist Mark Kent, took ownership of the company at the age of 29. Under Mark’s leadership, the company rebranded in 2007, changing its name from The Kent Manufacturing Co. to Kentwool. Just three years later, Kentwool introduced consumer products, debuting their wool golf sock at the 2010 PGA Merchandise show in Orlando, Fla. Maintaining the company’s family-centric mentality, Mark’s wife Kimberly V. Kent served alongside her husband as a member of the advisory board and in-house counsel.

Kim assumed the role as owner, president, and CEO in 2017, following Mark’s passing, at which time she became the first female owner and operator in the company’s history.

After 180 years and five generations of Kent family ownership, Kentwool remains one of the leading manufacturers of premium worsted wool yarn, one of the few remaining USA-based manufacturers of its kind. Today, Kentwool harnesses its extensive history and knowledge of the wool yarn industry to produce multiple lines of premier wool socks. From fiber to fulfillment, Kentwool products are made in the USA with 100-percent USA craftsmanship and minimal environmental impact. As of 2023, Kentwool is Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) Certified, working with nature, not against it, to take a step forward in responsibly innovating for the future.

Kentwool Announces New Leadership

As Kentwool celebrates the close of its 180th year in business, the company and its leadership look ahead to the next 180 years. The company has today announced that Kim Kent, owner, president, and CEO, will transition the role of president and CEO effective today, December 20, 2023. As her successor, Kent has named Justin Ferdinand, the company’s current COO and president of Kentwool Performance. Kent will maintain her role as chairman.

Ferdinand, an accomplished and transformative leader, continues to bring extensive knowledge and expertise in building and leading collaborative teams and organizations focused on driving results through innovative strategies and culture. During his time at Kentwool, Ferdinand’s work, initiative, and dedication to people have aligned tremendously with the company’s core values, making him an excellent cultural fit to lead the organization into the next chapter. Ferdinand will be the first CEO in the company’s history not related to the Kent family.

“I’m so excited to be part of such a fantastic company rich in history and to have the privilege to lead this team in the next chapter,” Ferdinand said. “We have an aggressive growth strategy focused on leveraging the organization’s full capabilities and a tenured team that is skilled and ready to make the plans a reality. “

Ferdinand’s vision for the future is anchored in establishing Kentwool as a global multi-solutions provider of high-quality wool yarn and wool products. With his direction, the company is poised to continue to grow and navigate the evolving challenges of the textile manufacturing industry, creating and capitalizing on new landscapes and opportunities.

“Leading this company for the last six years has been such an honor for me,” Kent said. “It has been a privilege to work daily with the most committed and most talented people in the wool industry.  Now, as we make this exciting leadership transition, I look forward to Justin’s fresh perspective as he leads our team and strategically builds on the company’s incredible history and our strong commitment to our people, our process, and our products.“

EcoSleep By Brooklyn Bedding Launches Two All-New Models

PHOENIX — January 4, 2024 — Brooklyn Bedding — manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer, and direct-to-consumer distributor of award-winning sleep products — announced today the relaunch of its organic sleep line, EcoSleep, by adding two all-new GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GREENGUARD Gold Certified models, EcoSleep and EcoSleep Luxe.

Sold exclusively online at EcoSleep.com, EcoSleep and EcoSleep Luxe offer an affordable entry point for all-natural latex mattresses. Boasting several top-tier certifications, both models source the world’s safest materials including eco-INSTITUT certified Talalay Latex, GOTS certified cotton, and organic EcoPlush wool, to create the ultimate hypoallergenic, supportive, and breathable sleep solution.

“Our all-new EcoSleep and EcoSleep Luxe models offer high quality, organic materials at an affordable entry point,” said John Merwin, CEO of Brooklyn Bedding. “We’ve carefully selected each layer, using the most organic and environmentally friendly materials available to deliver the ultimate healthy sleep solution. We’re thrilled to be adding two GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold certified mattresses to our lineup to provide yet another sustainable option to our customers.”

Both EcoSleep models layer sustainably sourced organic wool and organic cotton to create an all-natural quilted top cover. These layers not only offer comfort, but also provide temperature regulation, shape retention, and act as a natural fire retardant. As a naturally hypoallergenic fiber, wool also contains properties that prevent the build-up of dust mites, dust particles, and other potentially harmful allergens. Taking it a step further, EcoSleep Luxe adds another layer of luxury to the top of the mattress, pairing organic cashmere with two layers of wool to provide a plusher feel.

Both models add 100 percent natural Talalay Latex below the wool top layers, delivering a uniquely buoyant feel designed to relieve tension and relax the body. EcoSleep includes a 3-inch layer of all-natural latex while EcoSleep Luxe features an additional dense layer of latex to provide additional support. 8-inch coils follow the latex layers, providing superior response and body contouring support while ensuring motion isolation to minimize sleep disturbance. An organic wool base completes each build, adding an additional layer of fire protection and support to the mattresses.

Brooklyn Bedding received both GREENGUARD Gold and GOTS certifications in 2022 after passing a series of rigorous examinations, inspections, and testing. GOTS was developed in 2006 as a worldwide standard to ensure organic status and socially responsible manufacturing of textiles through the entire supply chain, including fiber production, processing, and manufacturing. The certification sets the benchmark for a universal understanding of environmentally friendly production systems and social accountability in the organic textile sector.

Both EcoSleep and EcoSleep Luxe come with a 10-year warranty and 100-night sleep trial. EcoSleep Standard starts at $995 for a queen and the Luxe model comes in at just $1,295 for a queen.

American Flock Association Launches Flock 4.0 With New Website, Tagline, And Logo

CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — January 4, 2024 — The American Flock Association, which represents flock manufacturers and their suppliers In North America, today formally introduced a new website, logo, and tagline in connection with the launch of Flock 4.0, a program designed to highlight the many innovative ways that North American flocking manufacturers are using flock to add value to a new generation of high-tech products.

The re-branding of the AFA through Flock 4.0 underscores an evolution in this industry that has been underway for the past decade.

Historically, flock has been seen as a design element that can enhance the appearance and hand of consumer goods. Flock 4.0 underscores the fact that Flocking can do – and is doing – much more. This includes, but is not limited to, using flock in new electric vehicles to reduce sound, rattles, echoes, and windshield glare. Flocking is also applied to boats to improve speed and save fuel. It can also be used as a thermal isolator or added to car floor mats to add slip resistance.

AFA’s new website is found here https://www.flocking.org/ , and offers easy access to information about the association, our members, design fundamentals and industry news. An updated FAQ, which lists examples of new, high-tech applications for flocking is available here. https://www.flocking.org/afa-faq

The AFA website underwent a complete redesign and is easy to access and navigate on any smart phone, iPad, laptop, or desktop computer. The logo and tagline have been updated, but still reflect the design elements people have come to know and associate with the North American Flock industry and AFA.

“Today’s flock technology and end products are not ‘old school,” said Steve Rosenthal, Managing Director of the AFA.

“Our members have taken flocking to new heights. From absorbing sound, heat, and light to adding flame retardancy and antimicrobial qualities, today’s flock offers an unlimited number of solutions ready to solve challenges in a variety of industries,” he added.

“We need to let the world know about these advances and Flock 4.0 is our answer. This is a year-long marketing campaign informing the markets we serve — and new ones on the horizon — about the major advances and flock capabilities that have been developed by our member companies.”
