UniFirst Achieves Additional Hygienically Clean Certifications

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — January 25, 2019 — Three more UniFirst laundries earned the Hygienically Clean Food Safety certification during the final quarter of 2018. UniFirst Corp. now has more than 40 facilities that have reached this milestone. UniFirst facilities recently certified include: Taylor, Mich., Albany, N.Y. and Sumter, S.C. Its Charlotte, N.C., location also qualified for renewal of its Food Safety certification for another three years.

These achievements reflects UniFirst’s commitment to best-management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by third-party on-site inspection and their capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing. The certification confirms a laundry’s dedication to compliance and processing garments and other textile products using BMPs as described in its quality-assurance documentation, the focal point for TRSA inspectors’ evaluation of critical control points that minimize risk.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for servicing animal processing, dairies, fruit/vegetable, bakeries, grain, and other food-and-beverage industry segments.

States with Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified UniFirst laundries (one each except where noted) now include Calif. (three); Colo.; Conn.; Fla. (four); Ga. (two); Mass.; Md. (two); Maine; Mich., N.C. (five); N.H. (two); N.J.; Nev.; N.Y. (two); Ohio; Okla; Pa.; S.C. (two); Texas (five); Utah; Va.; Wash.; and Wis. Canadian provinces represented are Alberta (two) and British Columbia.

“More and more, we’re seeing our customers in food-related industries looking for third-party validation that our specialized Product Protection Process and our Hygienically Clean standards are consistent with HACCP and GFSI guidelines,” said Adam Soreff, director of marketing and communications at UniFirst Corp., Wilmington, Mass. “Working with a Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified laundry helps reassure them that their managed uniform program is working in concert with their own food-safety protocols to help them ensure food safety for consumers.”

The Hygienically Clean Food Safety protocol examines a laundry’s Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) practices, including its techniques for:

  • Conducting hazard analysis;
  • Determining CCPs, monitoring their control, correcting them if not under control;
  • Validating and verifying HACCP system effectiveness; and
  • Documenting and recordkeeping to show ongoing conformance.

Inspection and reinspection verify laundry practices including washing procedures (detergent formulas, temperature, disinfectant, pH, extraction), drying, garment inspection and transportation. Each certified laundry plant’s operational flowchart is evaluated, ensuring these procedures (as well as pickup, unloading and sorting of soiled items and sorting of clean laundry) are mapped. Employees’ use of personal protective equipment is documented.

Inspectors also evaluate practices relevant to handling and processing textile products used in food manufacturing/processing establishments for adherence to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) directives.

Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Segment Becomes ADAMOS Network Partner

REMSCHEID, Germany — January 25, 2019 — The Oerlikon Manmade Fibers segment has been a member of ADAMOS, an alliance of machine and systems construction sector companies, since the beginning of 2019. With this move, the company is ramping up its digital strategy, creating the right framework for implementing its concrete Industrie 4.0 solutions.

Membership in the ADAMOS partner network is a further step on the company’s journey to becoming a digital solutions provider: ADAMOS was established as a strategic alliance for the future issues of ‘Industrie 4.0’ and ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT) for market leaders in the machine and systems construction sector. The bundled know-how from machine construction, production and information technology is designed to help the Oerlikon Manmade Fibers segment develop digital solutions with the support of the ADAMOS IIoT platform, promote new business models and establish a specific standard for the textiles industry.

On the path to becoming a digital yarn factory

Even at the ITMA Asia in the fall of last year, the Oerlikon segment with its Oerlikon Barmag and Oerlikon Neumag brands was able to convince customers with its digital products. AIM4DTY – Artificially Intelligent Manufacturing for DTY – for example, is a digital system that is trained by means of artificial intelligence so that it continually optimizes the running production process. Faults and deviations are identified more swiftly, enabling operators to initiate targeted troubleshooting measures.

At last year’s OpenStack Summit in Berlin, Germany, CEO Georg Stausberg presented a further digital Oerlikon Manmade Fibers innovation: with ‘Data Center in a Box’, the segment is offering its customers a new high-performance, flexible and above all secure IT infrastructure. The compact computing center works on the basis of the open OpenStack operating system, which enables virtual computing in a secure private cloud environment. “We are working on a whole range of digital solutions that will offer our customers very concrete added value”, commented Georg Stausberg.

Labmak Buys Second Tau 330 RSC After Brands Demand More Durst Quality Of Advanced Digital Printing And Production Technologies

BRIXEN, Italy— January 25, 2019 — Durst, manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, has announced that The Label Makers has invested in a second Tau 330 RSC single-pass label press after a spike in demand from converters and brand owners for Durst’s UV inkjet digital technology.

The Durst Tau 330 RSC production machines, which was installed in January, brings another leap in quality and a 60-percent uplift in production capacity for The Label Makers, known as Labmak, in Bradford, England, which successfully completed beta testing of the world’s first machine in late autumn.

“Yet again it’s unbelievable photographic quality,” said David Webster, Managing Director of Labmak, which has invested around 2.5 million pounds in Durst technology over the past six years. “We need flexibility, continuity and industrial scale production to meet our demanding customer requirements. The Durst Tau 330 RSC provides all this and more, printing at 78 linear meters/min (245ft./min).

“Customer requirements are changing constantly. In this market label delivery dates now typically get changed hourly, not even on a daily basis, so we have to have flexibility of printing on either machine or even transferring work from flexo. Durst Workflow software enables us to manipulate files press side, so jobs can be tweaked immediately without sending the file back to the studio, which could easily take up to 20 minutes. Any changes are now done in five minutes — it’s a major time-saver.”

Webster added: “The print quality is phenomenal. We do now have supermarket chains who are requesting the jobs be printed inkjet rather than flexo because of the vibrancy of the colors, the screen effect of the inks and the perfect print registration. This second Tau 330 RSC investment gives us the opportunity to take on more clients and better service our existing customers. Previously we were mainly using the Durst Tau presses for the personal care markets. Now, with new capabilities, we are producing everything from food labels through to high quality wines and spirits on the Durst Tau 330  RSC.”

Helmuth Munter, segment manager, Durst Label & Packaging Printing, said: “The Label Makers in the UK is a shining example of our ‘Configure Your Future’ theme and what can be achieved with Durst technology. The Tau RSC can handle a huge range of substrates for a broad range of application options. First launched at Labelexpo 2017, the Durst Tau 330 RSC is now installed at more than 25 locations across Europe. This is leading-edge, game-changing technology with highest printing speeds, which is available at economic cost on a global scale for a broad range of customers, including small and medium-sized label converters.”

Durst’s Tau 330 RSC press features 330 mm (13 in.) print width combined with leading edge print speed of up to 78 linear meters/min (245 ft./min) at 1200 x 1200 dpi printing resolutions. The press achieves a production capacity of 1,485 m² per hour, and thanks to its 8 color stations (CMYK+W+OVG) with new designed high pigmented inks it delivers outstanding, flexo look-like print quality with close to 95 percent pantone color gamut coverage.

DALLAS — January 24, 2019 — J.Hilburn today announces design leader Simon Kneen has joined the company as chief creative officer. This newly created role will ensure creative vision across all customer touch-points from collection design, styling, and showroom presentations to retail stores.

Kneen previously lent his design vision to two leading iconic brands in the United States. First, he served as creative design director for the Retail Brand Alliance setting the direction for Brooks Brothers and Adrienne Vittadini. Then he was recruited as executive vice president of design and creative director for Banana Republic, the GAP owned brand where he remained for six years leaving in 2013 marking an era of successful designer collaborations with brands such as MadMen, L’Wren Scott and Narciso Rodriguez, to name a few. Kneen’s early work in Europe included luxury designer brands, and he was head designer for the French pret-a-porter house, Balmain in the late 1990s.

“Simon is an innovative and experienced leader of men’s design and is a perfect fit for our disruptive brand,” said J.Hilburn CEO Andy Janowski. “I am excited to have his creative vision and leadership as we build the future of custom-made total lifestyle fashion.”

“I’m thrilled to be joining the leadership at J.Hilburn with their modern approach to servicing the customer through one-on-one tailoring experts,” explained Kneen. “I look forward to building a strong collection point-of-view across the various price points, using my extensive knowledge of Italian fabrics and tailoring.”

Unifi Introduces New Sustainable Offerings At 2019 Outdoor Retailer Snow Show

GREENSBORO, N.C. — January 24, 2019 — Continuing its commitment to sustainable innovation, Unifi Inc., global textile solutions provider and one of the world’s leading innovators in manufacturing synthetic and recycled performance fibers, will launch three new product offerings at Outdoor Retailer Snow Show 2019.  Focused on consumer demands for recycled products, Unifi is introducing TruFlexx™ sustainable, engineered stretch fiber made with REPREVE®, TruClean™ chemical-free anti-static fiber, and Repreve nylon staple fiber.

“Our customers continue to ask for fibers and technologies that will not only help them meet their sustainability goals, but also provide superior performance,” said Jay Hertwig, group vice president of global branded sales for Unifi. “At Unifi, we continue to develop solutions that help our customers make a difference.”

TruFlexx engineered stretch fiber is a breakthrough 100-percent polyester, sustainable stretch option that eliminates the need for spandex. When spandex is knit into a fabric, it greatly limits recyclability of the fabric after its useful life. TruFlexx engineered stretch can replace spandex in the 5 to 10 percent content range for comfort-stretch knits, creating the possibility of a 100-percent closed-loop recyclable polyester fabric. It is engineered for stretch and recovery, providing shape retention with less compression while also improving moisture management.

Static is a significant issue for apparel and home textiles, as it makes black and white jeans look dirty and faded, and creates a cleaning problem for pet hair. TruClean anti-static fiber is a chemical-free option and permanently inhibits static and cling, repelling pet hair, lint and other small particles to keep fabrics looking newer. TruClean anti-static is a sustainable option available with Repreve recycled fiber, and applications include apparel, pet bedding, upholstery, curtains and automotive.

Unifi is also launching Repreve nylon staple fiber, a new, more eco-friendly option for spun yarns. Repreve recycled nylon staple fiber can be used to improve the hand feel and strength of fabrics, add a natural heather effect, or a cooling effect. Nylon is lightweight, durable, moisture wicking, and resists pilling and abrasion; desirable characteristics that can easily be blended into a more sustainable yarn using Repreve nylon staple fiber.

“We believe that true innovation starts in the fiber, and our goal is to provide even more options to inspire our customers to innovate at the fiber level to achieve sustainable, high-performing products,” said Richard Gerstein, Unifi’s executive vice president of global branded premium value-added products and chief marketing and innovation officer. “True innovation happens when we collaborate with our brand and textile partners to create unique performance technologies that are embedded in the fiber, and we are excited to share these exciting new products at Outdoor Retailer Snow Show.”
