CAMX 2019 Exhibitor Preview: SGL Carbon

WIESBADEN, Germany — July 25, 2019 — At this year’s CAMX, the largest trade fair for composite materials in North America, SGL Carbon is presenting solutions for the markets automotive, aerospace and industrial applications under the motto “The Weight and Performance Optimizers”.

September 23-26, the company will be exhibiting various high-performance materials and components made of composite materials in Anaheim, Calif. Visitors to booth M2 in Hall D will be able to see examples of technological implementation.

Complex carbon components for the automotive industry

For the automotive sector, the company is exhibiting visible carbon components with high functional integration. The requirements for the structure and accuracy of fit of a component are very complex. In addition, in component production, there are often extensive surface requirements for an optically perfect appearance of the components. This will be presented at the trade fair booth with a rear spoiler made of carbon fiber fabricsfor a sports car manufacturer.

New axle concept with glass fiber-based leaf spring

The leaf spring made of glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP) is one of the components with the greatest potential for high-volume serial production. It is already used today as a transverse leaf spring in the rear axles of various models made by Volvo. The main advantages of the spring are a weight that is up to 65 percent lower than that of conventional steel springs, smoother handling of the vehicle and more space inside the vehicle. It is currently being implemented in new joint projects with renowned automobile manufacturers, primarily from Europe and North America.

High-performance insulation components for the aerospace industry

Thermal insulation for the fairing of engines or the insulation of the aircraft cabin play an important role here. The high-performance insulation components are a proven and certified aerospace solution from SGL Carbon. They are tailormade to customer specifications. The products are manufactured at the SGL Carbon plant in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Industrial applications made from fiber composites

Composite materials are also being used more and more in the industrial sector. At CAMX, for example, SGL Carbon will be exhibiting a cross bar made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the automation industry. In addition to its high strength and rigidity, the main advantages of the CFRP material are its low thermal expansion and good damping characteristics.

“We are looking forward to our participation in CAMX 2019 with great interest. The fair is an ideal platform to present ourselves to our customers as a reliable and innovative partner in the North American market,” commented Dennis Baumann, vice president sales and marketing Industrial Applications of the Composites – Fibers and Materials Business Unit of SGL Carbon. “From the fiber to the finished component, we offer customized solutions from a single source across all industries”.

With sites in Moses Lake, Wash., Gardena, Calif., and Arkadelphia, Ark., SGL Carbon is well positioned in the USA to serve the growing composites market.

You will find SGL Carbon at booth M2, Hall D, CAMX 2019, Anaheim. We look forward to seeing you.

Trivantage® Introduces Hydrofend™ Coated Fabric For Marine Applications

GLEN RAVEN, N.C. — July 24, 2019 — Hydrofend™, a solution-dyed polyester designed to balance high water resistance with breathability, is now available from Trivantage, a one-stop shop for fabrics, hardware, and accessories.

“Our goal was to create a fabric that lets little water in and water vapor out,” said Dan Fouratt, director of business development for Trivantage. “Hydrofend achieves this balance.”

Applications for Hydrofend include boat covers, boat enclosures, storage covers, and furniture covers. To ensure superior performance, the fabric was designed with a tear strength starting at almost 40 pounds warp and fill. The product also comes with a five-year limited warranty.

“We are a strong believer in coated fabrics,” Fouratt said. “Through experience, we have found that coating the back of the product provides superior water resistance and protects the surface. Coated fabric does not fray in the assembly process, making our customers’ jobs easier.”

Aramark Launches New Eco-Conscious Apparel Line Made Using REPREVE®

PHILADELPHIA — July 23, 2019 — Aramark is launching an exclusive new WearGuard® Eco Collection that offers an apparel solution for customers committed to minimizing their impact on environment, it was announced today. The eco-conscious apparel is created with recycled fiber blends, including traditional recycled polyester, oyster shell polyester and REPREVE® performance fiber manufactured entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

“Our customers are more environmentally conscious than ever before and this exciting new solution is one way we are responding to an increasing demand for sustainable products,” said Brad Drummond, COO of Aramark’s Uniform and Refreshments sector. “I couldn’t be more excited about this new offering and how it will help reduce our customers’ impact on the environment while continuing to provide them with comfortable, stylish, durable apparel options.”

Manufacturing recycled blends keeps waste out of landfills, uses less water and energy to make, and emits fewer greenhouse gases in the process. For example, recycled polyester requires 90 percent less water and 85 percent less energy to produce than polyester and reduces CO2 emissions by 50 to 60 percent.

Aramark is partnering with Unifi Inc., a global textile solutions provider that creates the Repreve fiber for clothing and other consumer products. Unifi has transformed more than 15 billion plastic bottles into recycled fiber and Aramark will be using the moisture-wicking fabric for its exclusive apparel.

“This approach supports our commitment to reduce waste before it is generated and to make the world a better place for our associates, clients, consumers, communities and the environment,” Drummond noted.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. Initiates Corporate Workforce Reduction

UNION, N.J. — July 23, 2019 — Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. today announced that in connection with its ongoing transformation and near-term priority to reset the company’s cost structure, it has initiated a reduction in corporate staff at its headquarters in Union, N.J., and at other select locations where corporate associates are based.  As part of this realignment, Eugene A. Castagna, president and COO of the company, departed today and the role has been eliminated.

Mary A. Winston, interim CEO, and member of the board of directors of Bed Bath & Beyond, stated, “As we reset our approach to the business transformation underway, we are executing against 4 key near-term priorities including resetting the cost structure.  While decisions that impact our staff are difficult, today’s action is an important step in simplifying our corporate structure and ensuring our resources are aligned with the business we are managing today. We remain confident in the underlying business and our ability to leverage the strength of the Bed Bath & Beyond brand and our lasting connection with customers to deliver on our near-term priorities and transform the company.”

The company recently completed a comprehensive and careful review of its corporate office cost structure, which has resulted in a reduction of approximately 7% of its corporate staff, including vice presidents, directors, managers and professional staff.  Each of the impacted associates was offered severance pay and other company support to assist them with their job transition.  The company will continue to review its cost structure to identify additional cost-savings opportunities.

Cost Savings and Fiscal 2019 Financial Outlook

These organizational changes are estimated to generate future annual pre-tax net savings of approximately $30.7 million.  Due to the timing of these changes, the pre-tax net savings for the remainder of fiscal 2019 are estimated to be approximately $18.9 million.  The company expects to incur pre-tax cash restructuring charges of approximately $12.0 million in fiscal 2019, primarily for severance and related costs in conjunction with this staff reduction, all of which will be expensed in the second quarter.

As provided during the company’s fiscal 2019 first quarter conference call on July 10, 2019, Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. expects its fiscal 2019 full year net earnings per diluted share to be at the lower end of $2.11 to $2.20, excluding goodwill and other impairments, severance and shareholder activity costs. In providing this operational guidance, the company included an estimate of the pre-tax cost savings related to today’s action to reset its cost structure.  The company expects to see a gradual, sequential improvement in its quarterly net earnings per diluted share, with the vast majority of its net earnings per diluted share to be earned in the second half of the fiscal year.

Due to the inherent difficulty of forecasting the timing or amount of items that have not yet occurred and are out of the company’s control, and that would impact its net sales, diluted net earnings per share, and the most directly comparable forward-looking GAAP financial measures, the company has not provided a reconciliation to these measures for its fiscal 2019 full year outlook on a GAAP basis. For the same reasons, the company is unable to address the probable significance of the unavailable information. Forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures provided without the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures may vary materially from the corresponding GAAP financial measures.

Tukatech Introduces World’s First Fully Automatic Pattern Making System — Longtime Goal Of Ram Sareen, Chairman & CEO

LOS ANGELES — July 23, 2019 — Tukatech introduces TUKA APM, the world’s first fully automated pattern-making and grading software as a module within TUKAcad. With TUKA APM, a person of any skill level can complete a graded pattern in seconds. As easily as filling out a measurement chart, apparel vendors and factories will be able to generate a 2D CAD pattern from measurements, including grade rules. This pattern is ready to push to TUKAmark to create a costing marker.

Automated pattern-making is a longtime goal of Ram Sareen, Chairman & CEO of Tukatech. Sareen says, “Twenty-four years ago, I started Tukatech to bring digital pattern-making to paper pattern-makers. We automated and reduced grading and marker-making because they are pure science. However, pattern-making is an art, so it needed more artisan input.”

Sareen attributes the breakthrough of TUKA APM to advancements in machine learning and data science. He continues, “It was my goal to completely automate pattern-making. I salute the dedicated developers who stayed with my vision for twelve long years to make this dream come true. Thank you TUKAteam!”

TUKA APM is available as an add-on module to TUKAcad via cloud-based subscription. In TUKAcad, digital pattern-makers select from a library of t-shirts, trousers, polos, dresses, and other apparel products for men, women, and children. For any of these silhouettes, the pattern-maker gives a value for each point of measure as indicated on a visual guide. Pattern-makers of any skill level can easily create a first pattern from scratch, and even specify values to instantly apply grading for larger and smaller sizes.

Arshad Sattar, Managing Director for Timex and Fergasam Group in Sri Lanka is excited to add TUKA APM to their product development process. Sattar explains that as a vendor, “Every day we have to develop and grade patterns just to create a costing marker for quotations for brands and retailers. This automated system does the work that generally involves 8-10 people and gives us the result much quicker as well.”

Most vendors have between a ten to twenty-five percent (10-25%) hit rate, meaning that much of their product development manpower is allocated to styles that will never move on to production. With TUKA APM, vendors will be able to quickly develop first patterns and have a better idea of garment cost at the beginning of the design process. TUKA APM, connected seamlessly with TUKA3D, can even generate 3D samples. This will lead to more informed decisions early in the design process. Design houses with first pattern makers can use this application to make showroom samples for developing new styles and get more productivity from less people.

TUKA APM is available to both existing and new TUKAcad customers via cloud subscription.
