Production Of Hand Sanitizer/Disinfectant Begins At CHT USA To Help With Shortage

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. — April 8, 2020 — CHT USA has started production of hand sanitizer/disinfectant to help with the shortage due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 currently circulating. CHT USA started to plan for the production after the FDA released a temporary policy for production of hand sanitizers/disinfectant mid March 2020. The CHT USA disinfectant is produced on the basis of a publicly accessible standard formulation of the World Health Organization. The CHT USA hand sanitizer/disinfectant is being produced at the Cassopolis, Mich., site as raw material availability allows.

Currently, requests from regional organizations such as emergency services, clinics and senior care facilities are given priority in our local communities of Cass County, Michigan and Chesterfield, Virginia. Subsequently, CHT USA wants to meet all further inquiries and start active sales to commercial customers. The distribution of the CHT USA disinfectant, which is available in one quart and 55-gallon drum containers, is thus exclusively directed at commercial customers and not at the end consumer.

We are pleased and proud to be able to make a positive contribution in this very difficult situation.

Gildan Activewear To Start Producing Personal Protective Equipment To Help Slow The Spread Of COVID-19

MONTREAL — April 8, 2020 — Gildan Activewear Inc. today announced that it has joined forces with various business partners to leverage its manufacturing facilities to produce non-medical face masks and isolation gowns in support of the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gildan is working with one of its customers in the imprintables channel to support a cooperative consortium of major apparel and textile companies to help produce non-medical face masks to be distributed to support hospitals, health care workers and others battling the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Both the design and textile fabric to be used in the production of these masks are being provided by partners of the consortium who are working in collaboration to lessen the major shortage of face masks. Gildan is also working with a retail partner to produce non-medical face masks primarily intended for healthcare organizations worldwide. This initiative includes manufacturing the required textile for the production of these masks. Moreover, the company is also working with another retail partner to manufacture isolation gowns to be distributed to the health care sector to help address the current shortage of personal protective equipment in fighting COVID-19.

Gildan has received authorization from the Honduras government to partially reopen one of its textile facilities to produce the fabric needed for the masks and gowns, and one of its sewing facilities in Honduras for the assembly of these products. To ensure the health and safety of its people, Gildan has mobilized a team of experts and is developing and implementing stringent processes to protect employees who have chosen to come back to work on this effort. The facilities that will be reopened for the production of personal protective equipment will all operate under a strict biosecurity protocol developed following government mandated guidelines and industry best practices.

“As an organization we are committed to playing a proactive role in supporting the shortage of personal protective equipment needed in the global fight against this pandemic,” said Glenn Chamandy, president and CEO of Gildan. “I want to thank our partners and everyone at Gildan who have been working diligently to get the required authorizations and plans in place to start the production of these much-needed items, and especially the facility workers who have volunteered to work to produce these products,” he added.

The company is also having discussions with other partners in the retail and imprintables industry interested in distributing personal protective equipment. Finally, the company has also communicated with other governments in the countries where it operates, including Canada and Honduras, and has offered to supply non-medical masks and isolation gowns as needed.

Gerber Technology Brings Together Textile Industry Suppliers To Increase Production And Availability Of PPE

NEW YORK CITY — April 8, 2020 — COVID-19 represents an unprecedented challenge for the world, requiring everybody to work together. In response, Gerber Technology created a Global PPE Task Force and has since brought together more than 600 manufacturers, technology partners, and industry coalition partners to make Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) products available broadly around the world.

Leading companies, such as Coats for threads and industry connections or Zilingo for sourcing, have joined the PPE Task Force as coalition partners, strengthening support for manufacturers throughout the entire supply chain. Building on their successful experience of converting Chinese manufacturers to produce PPE to address the COVID-19 mitigation plans in China, Gerber and its partners formed a network to scale the global production and to match supply and demand for critically needed PPE products.

“Working across the industry in a unique ecosystem of professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences has allowed us to support manufacturers’ conversion to PPE production by providing support for raw material selection, procurement and technical specifications to finished goods delivery. It is an ambitious initiative, but through a lot of hard work by the team and our partners, it is quickly becoming a powerful engine to drive solid and efficient PPE mass production,” said Mohit Uberoi, CEO of Gerber Technology. “We would like to thank our employees and global network of partners for joining our mission and going the extra mile to maximize the production capacity and availability to protect both medical professionals and people on the frontlines.”

Gerber’s global network of technology partners have provided comprehensive expertise and support to build an end-to-end “trusted supply chain” for personal protective equipment. Gerber’s partners include leading industry companies and associations such as: AAFA, AAPN, Coats, Elevate Textiles, Fashion for Frontline, Henderson Sewing, Industrial Fabrics Association International, NCTO, SPESA, Suuchi, and Zilingo.

“The Gerber Team’s expertise, forward-thinking and innovative technology are a true asset during this difficult time as many companies are eager to ramp up production but aren’t sure where to begin,” said Kim Glas, president and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO). “With Gerber’s and NCTO’s combined support, manufacturers are able to quickly transform their supply chain and begin producing PPE in short order.”

“In unprecedented times we can be most effective by working together in partnerships for the greater good,” said Rajiv Sharma, group chief executive, Coats. “By collaborating our innovation, expertise and industry connections we can deliver an industry-defining moment that is greater than the sum of its parts. Coats is proud to be joining the Gerber PPE Task Force and we are ready to help make a difference in keeping people safe during the pandemic.”

“Gerber has been an invaluable partner to AAFA and its members in our collective efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic,” noted Steve Lamar, president and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association. “Gerber’s skill, professionalism, and manufacturing expertise have been transformative in the industry’s ability to repurpose and ramp up production of life-saving personal protective equipment.”

“Gerber’s library of helpful resources made our transition to PPE incredibly quick and smooth,” said Kirby Best, CEO of OnPoint Manufacturing. “With Gerber’s equipment, expertise and support we were able to successfully transition our supply chain to manufacturing 90 percent PPE in a matter of days.”

TRSA Reports: Textile Industry Focusing On Medical Garments Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — April 8, 2020 — The dangerous shortages of supplies for doctors and nurses fighting the COVID-19 pandemic has focused new attention on the need for more reusable protective medical garments. Part of the spectrum of Personal Protective Equipment or PPEs that support frontline care providers that are in high demand includes Isolation Barrier Gowns (ISO), surgical gowns, scrub suits, and cubicle curtains. PPE protects healthcare workers as they treat patients. Failure to have enough of these critical items available hinders patient and medical staff safety.

“An isolation gown is the first defense for healthcare providers, patients, and visitors who spend time in a medical facility that faces the threat of emerging infectious diseases,” said Joe LaPorta, president and CEO, Healthcare Linen Services Group. “These gowns control and protect against infectious hazards in a medical workplace. The gowns adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines during patient care and procedures and are carefully examined and tracked during their lifetime.”

“Reusable PPE items can be sanitized and used between 80 to 100 times vs. only one time for a disposable item,” said David Potack, president of Unitex, a healthcare linen service which serves the hard-hit New York area. “Due to the shortage of disposable items we have significantly accelerated the turn times to get reusable items back to the healthcare facilities we serve.

“Reusable PPE items that can be quickly hygienically cleaned, processed and put back in a hospital’s inventory are a force multiplier in a crisis and are changing how people think about reusable PPE invention now and in the future,” said Potack.

Reusable (i.e. washable) gowns are typically made of polyester or polyester-cotton fabrics and can be safely laundered and reused. “Our trucks are on the road daily and our laundries are working 24/7 to meet the needs of the healthcare facilities we serve,” said LaPorta. “During a pandemic, such as the one we are now experiencing, the disposable market and supply chain are not guaranteed especially when one country makes most of the disposable items.”

“We have focused our development and production processes to help fight the battle against COVID-19,” said Halsey M. Cook, president and CEO, Milliken & Company. “Many of our U.S. customers are now manufacturing personal protective equipment, and we’re right alongside them, supplying the medical-grade, protective textiles they need.”

Milliken is manufacturing these critical textiles in the U.S.A. This enables Milliken to utilize strong supply chain relationships to quickly deploy these fabrics to customers where they are made into final pieces of PPE.

Milliken’s BioSmart™ antimicrobial technology, for example, is used for scrubs, lab coats and hospital privacy curtains, harnessing the power of bleach to kill up to 99.9 percent of common bacteria on contact and making reusable items even safer and more effective.

“Medline is increasing its manufacturing capacity for reusable isolation gowns, patient gowns, and scrubs to help support the needs of healthcare providers,” said Jeremy Fogel, vice president, Textiles Division at Medline. “Over the last several years, there has been a continued shift from reusable isolation gowns to disposable ones. Due to the current crisis, hospitals should consider implementing a more diversified supply chain strategy in the future by moving to a hybrid program that uses a combination of disposable and reusable isolation gowns.”

“Over the past few weeks we have seen a tremendous increase in our garment orders for medical caregivers because of this pandemic, not only on reusable isolation gowns, but on scrub apparel, reusable masks and other reusable garments as well,” said Dan Schwartz, vice president of Fashion Seal Healthcare.

“While I can’t speak for the disposable market outside of the massive supply shortage we have seen, we do anticipate a larger need for reusable garments in the future and will continue to support our laundry and distributor partners with their efforts,” said Schwartz.

“While we feel we were more prepared than most with ample inventory on hand, a situation like this teaches us that medical products can’t simply be treated as ‘just in time inventory.’ In the future, healthcare systems will need to work with their laundry partners and other suppliers to create inventory reserves that better satisfy their needs in an emergency,” Schwartz added.

“In the past it has sometimes been difficult to compete with disposable gowns,” said LaPorta. “Now our phones are ringing off the hook with healthcare facilities that are realizing that reusable gowns have a big advantage and should always be part of their supply chain as well as in emergency stockpiles.”

“Orders from current customers as well as new customers are asking that we help fill the void left by the shortage of disposable products with ISO gowns and cover gowns that are reusable,” said Liz Remillong, vice president, Strategic Alliances, Crothall Laundry Services. “This crisis is changing the paradigm for the supply chain of the future as hospitals recognize the importance of being able to stock and reuse items that are critical to safety.”

“There is ample evidence that reusable medical textiles are better for the environment,” said Joseph Ricci, TRSA president & CEO. “The current pandemic and the sudden need for huge volumes of safety equipment is making the case that reusable items should be a major part of the nation’s stockpile and supply chain.”

Fairfield Chair Pivots From Seating Production To Surgical Gowns; Supporting Health Care Workers In The Fight Against COVID-19

LENOIR, N.C. — April 8, 2020 — Fairfield Chair Co., a family-owned residential and contract seating company based in Lenoir, N.C., has retooled its production of chairs and sofas to high-in-demand surgical gowns in an effort to help rush supplies to health care companies on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Representing a small-town American manufacturing success story, Fairfield has nearly 100 years of experience producing seating for a variety of markets. But it has never produced apparel until now.

When the spread of the coronavirus impacted Fairfield and the entire U.S. manufacturing sector, Fairfield executives jumped into action.

The upholstered seating manufacturer, which essentially took a crash course on apparel patternmaking and industry specs, has switched its production to surgical gowns overnight. In just over a week, Fairfield produced its first samples of the surgical gown and immediately received approval on the prototype from Blue Ridge Healthcare in North Carolina, which has placed an initial order for 1,200 surgical gowns.

“We are a small company in Lenoir North Carolina with 450 employees,” said Doug McClurd, vice president of imports for Fairfield. “We have been primarily manufacturing dining, occasional chairs and sofas since 1921. This is the first time the company has converted over to making Level 1 surgical gowns and we now also have the ability to cut and sew the masks.”

Cotswold Industries worked closely with Fairfield to help the company pivot to gown and mask manufacturing and provide the materials needed for the finished products.

“As a U.S. manufacturer of textiles, Cotswold has worked hard to quickly pivot to making PPE [personal protective equipment] fabrics for our community. In partnership with Fairfield Chair we designed a product for a quick turn program to immediately address the needs of our healthcare heroes in the Carolinas,” said James McKinnon, Cotswold CEO.

“Cotswold is committed to using its 68 years of textile manufacturing experience and expertise to help ramp up Made in USA PPE products.”

Milliken & Company has also worked with Fairfield to provide critical materials.

“As our valued customers change course to manufacture PPE products during this critical time, Milliken is proud to provide them with medical fabrics that meet requirements and provide antimicrobial protection, manufactured right here in the Southeast, said Chad McAllister, president and executive vice president of Milliken’s Textile Division. “Trusted quality and solid partnerships are essential right now, and we believe the value of a U.S. textile supply chain is even more evident during times like these. We applaud Fairfield Chair’s cohesive strategy and speed to market in producing garments for healthcare workers on the front lines of this pandemic.”

Fairfield is also tapping into the experience it gained from producing seating for senior living facilities, which require certain materials with antimicrobial finishes.

“We are very accustomed to working with antimicrobial fabrics however, we have never worked with wovens that are developed to meet specifications like this material has to,” McClurd said. “It has been a challenging effort to re-task, but the response from our Senior Living customers and local Health Care facilities in regards to supporting Fairfield Chair with orders on this has been uplifting.”

“It is the little things that give people hope. It gives us hope to think we can be a player and can be taken seriously to help our Health Care heroes. Everyone around here wants to help in this situation. This gives us the outlet and at the same time, it eases the pain in manufacturing environment to give hope that we can be back and running and put people back to work,” McClurd said.

Fairfield Chair Co. is a major U.S. manufacturer of fine upholstered seating for the home, office, and hospitality industries. Established in 1921, Fairfield Chair distributes its product throughout the U.S. and many other countries.

Many established and up-and-coming fashion brands are based there, while the city is also in close proximity to a number of textile manufacturing clusters in surrounding provinces, and the sourcing offices of many global brands in Hong Kong. Canadian Technical Textile Materials And Clothing Industry Is Mobilizing To Supply The Health Sector

MONTRÉAL — April 6, 2020 — The technical textile materials and clothing industry, represented by TechniTextile Québec, CTT Group vand Vestechpro, is now ready to supply the health sector with front-line protective uniforms, including doctors, nurses, paramedic and maintenance personnel. As of today, Logistik Unicorp is taking over the coordination of the manufacturing of protective level 1, 2 and 3 gowns in collaboration with Duvaltex, Soleno Textile, Stedfast, Texel Technical Materials, Textiles Monterey, Maxime Knitting and CTT Group.

“In just 16 days, we were able to put in place a secure local supply chain capable of supplying the Québec and Canadian governments with disposable and washable solutions. The success of this initiative, undertaken in cooperation with CTT Group and Vestechpro, leverages the experience and expertise of an advisory committee made up of some ten textile materials and  clothing manufacturers as well as research and technology transfer centers,” said Dany Charest, general manager of TechniTextile Québec, the Technical Textile Materials Cluster, in charge to coordinate the concerted efforts of the industry until now.

Logistik Unicorp, a world-class integrator of uniforms and security equipment and the main supplier to the Canadian army, aims to launch production of protective gowns as soon as it receives official orders from the governments. “Our teams are in place to meet the demand. Textile manufacturers are already adapting their production to meet demand from the medical sector. Our supply chain is capable of producing up to 200 000 protective gowns every week.
