EURATEX Is Reaching Out To The Ukrainian Textile Industry

BRUSSELS — May 9, 2022 — Today, EURATEX has launched its EU-Ukraine Textile Initiative (EUTI), which aims at facilitating cooperation between European and Ukrainian textile and apparel companies. EUTI offers a single contact point for Ukrainian companies who seek support and cooperation with EU counterparts, and vice versa. That connection will be helpful to match supply and demand — there are many requests for supplies of fabrics, for example — engage in public procurement, and offer company-to-company support.

The service will be coordinated by EURATEX in close cooperation with UKRLEGPROM, Ukrainian Association of enterprises of textile & leather industry. Olena Garkusha, an experienced manager coming from the Ukrainian textile industry and now based in Brussels, will act as contact point (eu-ukraine@euratex.eu).

EU exports to Ukraine reached 1.3 billion euros in 2021 (13th market), whereas imports from Ukraine reached 500 million euros (21st place). There is potential to expand that relationship, both in the short term — to respond to urgent needs in military and medical fabrics, for example — but also in the longer run; as partner in the PEM Convention, Ukraine can play an important role in Europe’s textile and apparel supply chain. The proposed suspension of tariffs on imported products from Ukraine by the EU will offer further opportunities.

EURATEX Director General Dirk Vantyghem commented: “Supporting the textile industry is our way to help the people of Ukraine. We encourage our European members to connect via EUTI and develop sustainable partnerships.”

Tetyana Izovit, President-Chief of the Board of UKRLEGPROM welcomed the initiative: “Today, we have many textile and apparel  companies in Ukraine with expertise and skilled workers; they are able and willing to work with EU, but lack the contacts, customers and supplies. EUTI will help them.”

Jelenew Appoints Ex-Chanel Designer Di Liu As Creative Director

Di Liu (left) and Desire Capaldo at the 2019 Paris Charity Foundation Dinner.

WILMINGTON, Del. — May 9, 2022 — American avant-garde cycling brand Jelenew appoints ex-Chanel designer Di Liu as creative director. With the addition of Di Liu, Jelenew followed the revolutionary spirit of Chanel. According to the dismantling of the muscle force data during women’s cycling, Jelenew took the lead in introducing the moulage technique into the R&D and design of professional cycling clothing. And it led to the development of the first cycling pants that were true for women in the world, namely the Jelenew 1+1 model: one pair of tight-fitting leggings and one detachable external pad. It completed the critical step of “perfect fusion of functionalism and 3D structure aesthetics”, making Jelenew a new creative force in the cycling apparel industry.

A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that more than 58 percent of female cyclists surveyed experienced genital numbness, hip pain, groin pain, and other physical discomforts while riding due to inappropriate pad construction. The three-section V-shaped cycling pad structure used in the Jelenew cycling pants may help women reduce or eliminate physical discomforts such as genital numbness, hip pain, and groin pain caused by cycling. It will ultimately break the cycling industry and female riders’ perception of professional cycling pants and lead a healthy and comfortable revolution for women’s cycling.

Di Liu revolutionarily implanted the advanced customized clothing technology — the moulage technique,3D tailoring, and the concept of “multi-scene shuttle” into the development of professional cycling clothing. The cycling pants with an external pad have become the first professional cycling pants that can be worn daily, completely eliminating a series of problems such as hot private parts, embarrassing lines, bulging of private parts, camel toe, etc. The products developed and designed by Di Liu are still in the testing stage and have won unanimous praise from professional athletes and cycling enthusiasts.

Di Liu graduated from Esmod and IPLME in Paris, France, and studied advanced garment customization and luxury management. In 2016, he joined the core design team of Chanel Haute Couture and had made significant achievements in 3D tailoring, fabric reconstruction, and fashion trend analysis. In 2019, he joined the French fashion and culture magazine “ART ET MODE” as the editor-in-chief. He is good at applying art forms in design, bringing the advanced interpretation of functionalism to aesthetics.

Di Liu’s unique fashion perspective and sense of innovation make him an ideal candidate. Jelenew official said: As a designer with a distinct personality, Di Liu’s talent is evident. His passion for cycling, dedication to product design, and forward-looking perspectives on fashion trends fit perfectly with the values of the Jelenew brand, further enriching the brand’s tonality.

“It’s my honor to join Jelenew on this new journey with a passionate team. Jelenew is a special brand born for women. At the beginning of the company’s establishment, it focused on solving a series of clothing problems encountered by women in cycling. I am proud to be part of such a brand with a strong sense of social responsibility. And there are a lot of talents here, and we are eagerly looking forward to building the “sweat life” of Jelenew with everyone. I look forward to contributing my creativity and experience and stepping into a new chapter with Jelenew. “Di Liu said earlier.

The cycling pants with an external pad developed by Di Liu subvert the built-in pad structure of traditional cycling pants. Its launch lays the foundation for the next chapter of the brand and promotes the advent of a new era in the cycling industry. This also highlights the pioneering perspective that Di Liu brings to Jelenew and the cycling industry.

Top haute couture talents have entered the cycling apparel industry. Looking forward to more surprises from Jelenew!

DONAU, Germany — May 6, 2022 — Turkey-based company Altun Tekstil, a manufacturer of home textiles and upholstery fabrics, has ordered a total of five of the latest Orthopac RVMC-15 weft straighteners from Mahlo, the Germany-based trendsetter in measuring and control technology.

The tasks of the ultra-modern machines in the industrial plant of the steadily growing family business in Bursa: delivering absolutely straight fabric in all process stages. Because the company with a long tradition has high standards for its products. Founded in 1993, Altun exports its fabrics to more than 60 countries, among them many Middle Eastern and European countries.

The production of textured yarns, weaving and raschel knitting as well as dyeing and finishing is included in Altun’s operations. While the focus is on tulle curtains and upholstery, the company’s fabric range also encompasses a wide variety for apparel.

The powerhouse does not want to rest on its current market position. The company has big goals for the future and does not shy away from investments to achieve them, as company Owner Murat Altun said: “In 2022, for example, we will reintegrate the spinning mill for synthetic filaments from chips into our upholstery fabric weaving mill, which we have built just like a dyehouse for knitted and woven fabrics. In the longer term, we plan to bring all our operations together in a single facility of 350,000 square meters, to employ approximately 10,000 people. Our goal is to do everything within our own operations.”

When investing in the future, Altun Tekstil has consistently trusted in Mahlo and has installed 10 Mahlo Orthopac RVMC-15 weft straighteners in its two plants since 2016.

“Since the beginning, we have worked with Mahlo and their agent in Turkey, Masters. Especially the excellent service provided via the local service station Mahlo Textile Services are extremely satisfying. For us, Mahlo is the synonym for weft straightening in general”, said Plant Manager Mehmet Mor.

All the Mahlo weft straighteners Orthopac RVMC-15 are integrated into existing production lines. Mahlo’s latest weft straightener is fit to interact and communicate via the newly mSmart concept with all production lines and provide historical data, which help to improve the production processes

“With the Mahlo Orthopac RVMC-15, Altun is able to achieve lowest possible residual distortion values at highest speeds, which results in a very economic process,” said Mahlo’s Sales Manager Adnan Andac. “Our newly developed controller based on AI is showing his superiority especially during straightening processes for fabrics with complex structures and special material composites.”

The fully integrated units benefit from universal control technology and the intuitive Mahlo mSmart G15 visualization concept. The HMI has been optimized for user-friendliness. The visualisation concept is constantly enhanced and ready for Industry 4.0. The path to a digital future within Altun is prepared.

Apparel Manufacturer Bespoke Manufacturing Co. (BMC) Chooses Lectra’s Solutions To Automate Its On-Demand Production

NEW YORK CITY — April 29, 2022 — Lectra — a player in the fashion, automotive and furniture markets with industrial intelligence solutions — is equipping Bespoke Manufacturing Co. (BMC) with its Gerber AccuMark® range of solutions and Gerber Z1 cutting machine for its manufacturing site in Phoenix, Ariz.

A made-to-measure womenswear manufacturer, BMC is known for its revolutionary on-demand business model, providing customized garments through onshore production to improve sustainability and profitability. All products are sold prior to manufacturing, minimizing fabric waste and excess inventory, which greatly reduces costs. By adopting this model, BMC also gains agility in helping its customers respond to sudden changes in consumer demand, tastes, and preferences. “Our aim is to provide a viable alternative to the traditional supply chain by reducing manufacturing time from months to minutes,” said J. Kirby Best, CEO, BMC.

BMC has selected Lectra’s Gerber Z1 cutter and Gerber AccuMark CAD system to power its iCreate.Fashion platform, which serves as the backbone of its on-demand factory. This technological ecosystem incorporates a digital printing solution, the Kornit Presto, and Lectra’s AccuMark 2D, AccuMark Made-to-Measure solutions, as well as the GERBERcutter® Z1 allowing BMC to go from designing to printing and cutting and sewing within minutes, without facing the risk of errors. With Lectra’s solutions, BMC can streamline and automate the on-demand production process, without having to handle complex logistical issues and long lead times. As a result, they can achieve high throughput using less resources and labor, ensure consistent profitability, and expand their business to other regions with the same production model.

“Compared to mass production, the on-demand model is well adapted to fashion’s new normal, as it digitalizes the supply chain, creates minimal waste, and is more agile to meet consumers’ needs. Traditionally, it is a complicated and tedious process, with long lead times. Our Industry 4.0 technology connects the dots to enable more and more trailblazing companies like BMC to adopt this way of manufacturing without any of its inconveniences, thanks to automation. By helping BMC, we are promoting a flexible, responsible manufacturing mindset, which is a step toward the future of the fashion industry. At the same time, we are bridging the gap between profitability and environmental sustainability,” said Lenny Marano, president, Americas, Lectra.

National Retail Federation: U.S. Ports Set New Record For Imports

WASHINGTON — May 6, 2022 — Imports at the nation’s major retail container ports set a new record this spring and are expected to see near-record volume this month as retailers bring in merchandise ahead of rising costs and further supply chain issues, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“Retailers are importing record amounts of merchandise to meet consumer demand, but they also have an incentive to stock up before inflation can drive costs higher,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “Whether it’s freight costs or the wholesale cost of merchandise, money retailers save is money that can be used to hold down prices for their customers during a time of inflation. In addition, retailers are preparing for any potential disruptions because of the West Coast port labor negotiations, which are set to begin next week. NRF has previously encouraged the parties to remain at the table and not engage in disruptions if a new contract is not reached by the time the current agreement expires July 1.”

U.S. ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 2.34 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units – one 20-foot container or its equivalent – in March, the latest month for which final numbers are available. That was up 10.8 percent from February and up 3.2 percent year over year. It also topped the previous record of 2.33 million TEU set in May 2021 for the number of containers imported in a single month since NRF began tracking imports in 2002

Ports have not yet reported April numbers, but Global Port Tracker projected the month at 2.27 million TEU, up 5.7 percent from last year. May is forecast at 2.3 million TEU, which would be down 1.4 percent from last year but nonetheless the third-highest level on record.

“Consumer spending is growing faster than income growth, perhaps as shoppers buy ahead of expected rising prices,” Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett said. “Importers are doing much the same as they continue to replenish their inventories. Doing so will protect them against potentially rising freight costs, further delays in the supply chain and complications in upcoming labor negotiations at U.S. West Coast ports.”

June is forecast at 2.29 million TEU, up 6.6 percent from last year; July at 2.31 million TEU, up 5.3 percent; August at 2.29 million TEU, up 0.9 percent, and September at 2.15 million TEU, up 0.3 percent.

The first six months of 2022 are expected to total 13.5 million TEU, up 5.1 percent year over year. Imports for all of 2021 totaled 25.8 million TEU, a 17.4 percent increase over 2020’s previous annual record of 22 million TEU.

How to build a stronger and more sustainable supply chain will be addressed as retailers, industry experts and technology innovators meet at the NRF Supply Chain 360 conference in Cleveland in June.

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by Hackett Associates, provides historical data and forecasts for the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Port of Virginia, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades, Miami and Jacksonville on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast. The report is free to NRF retail members, and subscription information is available at NRF.com/PortTracker

There’s Something New Under The Sun: Right Light™ For The Xenotest® 220+

Xenotest 220+

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. — May 5, 2022 — Atlas Material Testing Technology, the global supplier of weathering technology and services, has introduced the Right Light™ optical filter for the Xenotest® 220+ lightfastness testing instrument. Providing the most precise match to natural sunlight available, Right Light was previously available only for Atlas’ flagship Ci Weather-Ometer® weathering instruments.

“It was challenging to develop the Right Light filter technology for the air-cooled Xenotest 220+ which now provides a better match than ever to natural sunlight,” said Dr. Oliver D. Rahaeuser, senior product manager, Atlas MTT.

The UV cut-on wavelength of Right Light for Xenotest is much closer to the cut-on of natural solar radiation than that of earlier daylight filters, such as XENOCHROME® 300. Additionally, the total UV part is better matched to that of natural sunlight.

Demand for daylight simulation of Right Light quality in weathering and color-lightfastness testing is growing. First employed for evaluating automotive coatings, use of this filter technology has expanded to other industries and standardization organizations. Recently, the international weathering standard for plastics ISO 4892-2 and national ASTM G155 have been revised to include ‘Daylight Type I’ spectrum definitions similar to the Right Light.

In addition to plastics, the high spectral fidelity of Right Light supports increased correlation of results in weathering tests adopting this filter technology, including coatings (ISO 16474-2) and outdoor textiles (ISO 105-B10)
