Testing The Hand Feel Of Functional And Outdoor Wear Has Never Been So Easy As With This Innovative Tactile Sensation Analyzer From emtec Electronic

LEIPZIG, Germany — May 5, 2022 — Whether the product is sportswear or sleeping bags, manufacturers of functional and recreational fabrics usually need to know how the material feels to the touch and compare results between samples. If it’s more elastic, for example, after using a certain processing technique, or softer after using a particular additive — this information aids in optimizing the comfort factor of the finished product. Ideally, the results should be delivered quickly, use minimal resources, and be as reliably close to the human perception of touch as possible.

Appearing for the first time at the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Denver, measuring device manufacturer emtec Electronic will be presenting a machine specifically for this purpose. Using an innovative measuring principle based on sound measurement, the  easily portable TSA Tactile Sensation Analyzer provides makers of textiles and nonwovens with an objective value for the handle and comfort of practically any type of fabric.

Unlike human testers, the TSA is able to differentiate between the haptic parameters softness, smoothness, and stiffness to arrive at an overall haptic impression of a material sample. In addition to the haptic, the TSA also measures the elasticity, plasticity, and hysteresis of a material, indicating, for example, how the material behaves when crumpled, pulled, or pressed.

“Because the human sense of touch is such a subjective experience, most of us — even professional testers — are unable to distinguish between haptic traits or place an objective value on how something feels,” explained emtec Global Marketing and Business Development Manager Alexander Gruener. “The TSA bypasses this shortcoming by providing quick data that have been shown in extensive trials to correlate nearly perfectly with the results of human hand-panel testing.”

Visitors to the Outdoor Retailer event in Denver are encouraged to stop by Booth 51073-UL and speak to emtec’s Global Marketing & Business Development Manager as well as the area sales manager for North America, Alexander Gruener, for more information or to request a demonstration.

Collier Aerospace’s New HyperX® Structural Analysis And Design Software Chosen For Sizing Of Unique Composite Racing Sailboat

PARIS, France — May 4, 2022 — At JEC World 2022, Collier Aerospace Corp. is spotlighting the success of its new HyperX® analysis and sizing optimization software in designing a unique composite racing sailboat. The innovative kite-powered trimaran, called the Sea Rocket, was constructed by a Swiss team of young engineers and sailing enthusiasts, aided by students at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In 2023, this crew, known as the SP80 team, will attempt to break the world sailing speed record by reaching 80 knots off the coast of France. Collier Aerospace is prominently displaying a 1-meter scale model of the sailboat at its JEC World booth (K44, Hall 6) so visitors can get a close-up look at this unique vessel. The company is also giving live demonstrations in their booth of the SP80 model with their software.

“The SP80 team was extremely impressed with the new HyperX software and the engineering expertise that we received from Collier Aerospace,” said Xavier Lepercq, SP80 cofounder and technical manager. “The HyperX software was able to size an extremely complex structure and evaluate several different load cases very quickly. We really relied on Collier Aerospace’s engineering judgement and experience to help us make smart decisions. We look forward to collaborating with the Collier Aerospace team on future structural projects.”

Sizing Optimization For a Sea Rocket

Using HyperX software, Collier Aerospace provided composite optimization for the majority of the primary rigid structures on the craft, including the main hull, the power module and the back floats. Sizing involved determining the thinnest, lightest laminates and sandwich core material that met the mechanical requirements in each section of the boat while maintaining positive safety margins.

Additionally, HyperX software was used for a variety of other purposes on the SP80 team’s boat. These included trade studies for numerous laminate and sandwich panel combinations; structural optimization for manufacturability by defining fabrication and laydown sequences using the thin-ply carbon fiber-reinforced laminates; and assessment of different structural design concepts, followed by rapid sizing of the newly generated structures including static stress and buckling analyses — often as parts were being fabricated. The model generated in HyperX software contains 300,000 elements and over 500 unique design properties.

“A complex project like this composite sailboat is where HyperX software really shines,” said Mischa Pollack, director of Innovation for Collier Aerospace. “It can size a structure much faster than other tools. This speed allowed us to evaluate many different design concepts for the various chassis components, particularly the power module. This type of project is one of my favorite things about Collier Aerospace: working with great teams like the SP80 group while helping HyperX become a better tool for the future.”

Unique Structure

Competitors attempting to break the World Sailing Speed Record had substantial latitude when designing their craft, which led and inspired the SP80 team to use a trimaran architecture comprised of four key elements. Three carbon fiber-reinforced composite hulls (the main hull/passenger compartment, which protects pilot and copilot, and two side floats, which provide stability at both low and high speeds), are designed to always stay in contact with the water. Super-ventilated hydrofoils reduce cavitation and drag, thus helping the pilot use all available power to propel the boat forward. A kite (sail) is then tethered to the main hydrofoil and transforms wind power into a propulsive force to move the boat. Several different kites with surface areas ranging from 25 to 40 square meters can be used to adjust to wind conditions. The patented and all-important composite power module is a mechanical system that constantly aligns the kite’s ascending force with the hydrofoils’ descending force, efficiently transmitting wind forces from the kite to the hydrofoils and the boat itself while maintaining high-speed stability. Together, these four elements were designed to increase speed and minimize drag in both air and water to aid the team in succeeding with its record-breaking attempt.

NCTO President & CEO Kim Glas Issues Statement On USTR 301 Tariff Review

WASHINGTON — May 4, 2022 — National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) President and CEO Kim Glas, representing the full spectrum of U.S. textiles from fiber through finished sewn products, issued a statement on the U.S. Trade Representative’s statutory four-year review of the China 301 tariffs.

Statement from NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas:

“We have long advocated for the 301 penalty tariffs to remain on finished textile and apparel products from China. Not only do they increase the government’s negotiating leverage to address the Chinese government’s serious predatory trade practices that have hurt our domestic manufacturing sector and that of our free trade agreement partners for decades; they also send a strong message to China that the United States is committed to addressing systemic predatory trade practices that have undermined domestic industries and their workers.

“For decades, China’s illegal actions have undermined virtually every domestic manufacturing sector and contributed to the direct loss of millions of U.S. jobs. These devastating state-sponsored practices, which include intellectual property theft, pervasive state-ownership of manufacturing, industrial subsidies, and abhorrent labor and human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region, have allowed China to dominate the global marketplace, which has had severe ramifications on American workers and our Western Hemisphere trade allies. As sourcing executives seek to de-risk out of China for these products, our sector is experiencing massive investment in the U.S. and Western Hemisphere supply chains. In fact, we expect approximately $1 billion of investment announced in the United States and Central America this year alone, as penalty tariffs have played a key role in sourcing shifts.

“We have long advocated for the tariffs to be maintained on finished textile and apparel products to ensure we address these larger systemic issues that have substantially hurt our manufacturing sector and offshored jobs.

“Tariffs are a reasonable and necessary mechanism to support U.S. jobs, offset unacceptable practices, and strengthen the national economy. They help partially level the playing field for American manufacturers and workers trying to compete against unfair and illegal trade practices — ranging from intellectual property theft, forced labor, to state-sponsored subsidies — that have been perpetuated by the Chinese government. These products have flooded the U.S. market and put our domestic producers and their jobs at risk and have significantly contributed to offshoring and the destruction of the middle-class jobs. It’s critical we maintain key negotiating leverage to address these predatory trade behaviors.

We have also strongly advocated for a fair, transparent process to remove tariffs on certain limited textile machinery, chemicals and dyes that cannot be sourced domestically to help U.S. manufacturers compete against China.

The review process, which is required by statute and being undertaken by the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, will allow domestic manufacturers to weigh in on whether removing the tariffs will be harmful and trigger USTR to do a further review.

Our position has not wavered; the U.S. must maintain Section 301 tariffs on finished products, in the absence of substantive improvements in China’s pervasive, predatory trade practices. Lifting these penalty duties will cement China’s destructive dominance of global manufacturing and will do nothing to achieve the administration’s goal of easing inflationary pressures, as apparel prices out of China continue to hit rock bottom regardless of the Section 301 tariffs.”
