Indorama Ventures Reports A Record FY22 Performance, Outweighing A Challenging Fourth Quarter

D K Agarwal, Deputy Group CEO of Indorama Ventures

BANGKOK, Thailand — February 27, 2023 — Indorama Ventures Public Co. Ltd. (IVL), a global sustainable chemical producer, today reported a record FY22 financial performance from the company’s global manufacturing footprint serving end-consumers’ resilient need for daily necessities. The unusually high level of customer destocking that weighed on the fourth quarter result is expected to have leveled out and business should return to normal operating conditions, with China’s reopening to further spur demand.

Full-year Core EBITDA climbed 31 percent YoY to $2.3 billion as revenue rose 28 percent to a record $18.8 billion. The company recorded strong cash flows of $2.2 billion, up 111 percent YoY. Indorama Ventures’ geographically diversified, integrated platform, backed by management’s agility, withstood unprecedented global events to generate earnings through the business cycle. During the year, the company continued to focus on its growth plan, successfully integrating its strategic surfactants business in Latin America and Vietnamese packaging acquisition. A dedicated senior team is working tirelessly and is committed to the company’s ‘Vision 2030’ sustainability goals including recycling technologies and introducing biomass feedstock to the company’s product portfolio. The ongoing ‘Project Olympus’ cost transformation program delivered an annual run rate of $449 million in efficiencies.

The strong annual result was impacted by an unusually challenging final quarter as fears of a recession and reduced transit times led to widespread destocking by customers. 4Q22 Core EBITDA declined 43 percent YoY to $264 million on a 1-percent drop in revenue to $3.9 billion. The pandemic lockdown in China also continued into the final quarter, reducing factory demand across Indorama Ventures’ portfolio and resulting in narrower margins from lower prices and higher costs. Higher energy and utility costs impacted European operations as the war in Ukraine continued into the winter.

To improve competitiveness and build resilience, Indorama Ventures rationalized underperforming assets in the Fibers business in Europe and a PTA site in Asia, resulting in a $7 million cash impairment in 4Q22 and a $253 million non-cash impact. As a result, the company looks forward to a $38 million uplift in EBITDA in 2023, reaching up to $65 million by 2025.

The company’s Board has approved full-year dividend of 1.60 Baht per share, its highest ever on the back of EPS of 5.39 Baht, an increase of 18 percent YoY.

D K Agarwal, Deputy Group CEO of Indorama Ventures, said: “In 2022, we showed how our strong market leadership, our integrated global model, and diverse product portfolio serving consumers daily needs allow us to generate earnings that outlast fluctuations through the business cycle. As we did during the preceding pandemic period, my colleagues were able to respond efficiently to cover customers’ needs across our footprint amid global disruptions. Fundamental consumer demand remains strong, and we expect the destocking that impacted volumes in the fourth quarter to recover in the first half of this year.”

SDC Survey: 78 Percent Of Dyeing And Coloration Professionals Believe Formal, On-The-Job Education Is More Important Than Ever

BRADFORD, England — February 22, 2023 — The Society of Dyers and Colourists today urged companies and organizations to commit to upskilling staff, and secure a brighter future for the global industry.

The rallying call follows the release of the SDC Education Survey 2023 in which an overwhelming majority of coloration professionals in 25 countries underlined the value of colour education to organizations.

A total of 82 of the survey’s 105 respondents — 78 percent of the highly-knowledgeable sample — agreed that current, difficult times for dyeing and coloration mean it is more important than ever that employers educate their workforces, funding qualifications for key personnel.

Other key findings in a white paper centered on the survey, now available to download, included:

77 respondents, or 73.3 percent, stated that their own organization’s success was linked with technical, educational attainment.

Some 60 percent of those surveyed felt their own organization prioritizes formal, on-the-job education where appropriate.

More than three quarters of participants — 76.1 percent — said their employer appreciated the benefit of having well-qualified staff.

However, the questionnaire also revealed difficulties in committing to paying for courses for employees, and perhaps some negative attitudes to color education:

Nearly half of respondents, or 46.6 percent, believe harsh trading conditions are making it hard or impossible for firms to fund learn-while-you-earn opportunities.

However, almost a quarter of professionals asked, 23.8 percent, felt their workplace could fund qualifications but chose not to.

A total of 52, 48.5 percent, stated that their company or organization could be performing better, and that this was linked with underqualified or underexperienced personnel.

Dr. Graham Clayton, CEO of the SDC, said: “Our survey is packed with the insight of professionals at every level, in different global territories — and many of them are highly qualified in technical, color disciplines.

“Their conclusions on the value of workplace education — whether provided by the SDC, universities, colleges or other operators – is clear. They feel employers should step up the qualifications they offer to fund, despite tight budgets and times of uncertainty.

“They know that staff who are able to underpin their skills and experience with technical theory have a clear advantage in driving improvement and innovation, and therefore performance and profit.”

Dr. Clayton continued: “If individual businesses and organizations are thriving, this puts the coloration sector in a much stronger position to face the challenges ahead.”

Early in 2021 the SDC published its global Skills Survey in which 71 percent of participants agreed there was a worldwide shortage of knowledgeable coloration professionals.

While student numbers on the SDC online learning register remain steady, there is certainly scope for more companies to get behind education as a driver to secure better times ahead.

The SDC offers Foundation Textile Coloration Certificate and Textile Coloration Certificate (FTCC/TCC) and the honours degree equivalent Associateship of the SDC (ASDC) leading to Chartered Colourist (CCol) status, as well as a range of short courses, all detailed on the organization’s Colour Network.

The Worshipful Company of Dyers offers help with funding for FTCC/TCC candidates to UK companies, covering up to 60 percent of fees through the Future Dyers’ Fund.

Crystal International Recycles Fabric Waste To Embrace Vision Of Zero Operational Waste To Landfill

HONG KONG — February 23, 2023 — Crystal International Group Ltd. has been spending untiring efforts in minimizing operational waste generation and disposal in its global factories. To move ahead towards the vision of Zero Landfill, the group is working relentlessly to adopt holistic waste management and put circularity into practice. Crystal’s sportswear factory in Vietnam and lifestyle wear factory in China successfully attained zero production waste to landfill by diverting 100 percent of its production waste away from landfill and incineration through recycling and waste-to-energy.

Further to the group’s waste management practices across the entire production and supply chain, including reduction at source via managing material purchasing and utilization, the factories stepped ahead and fully uncovered the value of fabric waste with various initiatives through collaboration with qualified waste co-processing partners.

The sportswear factory in Vietnam recycled fabric waste to pillow cores and plastic powder. These recycling initiatives successfully reduced more than 125,000 kilograms (kg) of carbon emissions per year originated from the waste treatment and disposal. The factory also recovered energy and made use of fabric waste material for cement production by a thorough process of mixing fabric waste with cement raw materials and co-processing at least 1400°C in cement kiln. Around 5,900 kg of cement could be produced by recycling over 117,000 kg of waste.

The lifestyle wear factory in China established a comprehensive waste collection system which encompassed waste streams. In addition to recycling fabric waste into yarns, other waste such as sludge and food waste were recycled into bricks and fish feed respectively. To fully utilize all sorted waste, non-recyclable waste was sent to waste co-processing partner for energy recovery. In 2022, the factory diverted 3,040 metric tons solid waste from landfill.

“Waste is not a waste, we upcycle and recycle fabric waste from factories to create new styles. We always embed circularity into our design to manufacturing stages and rethink how fabric waste from operation could generate positive impact. Look forward to collaborating with different partners to explore new circularity opportunities,” said Catherine Chiu, vice president, Global Sustainability of Crystal International.

Circular economy is one of key enablers to remedy waste issue in the supply chain and achieve net zero. Crystal International will continue to scale up circularity and upcycling with other stakeholders, paving the way for an ecofriendly and sustainable fashion industry.

Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) Issues January Retail Sales Analysis

WASHINGTON — February 23, 2023 — The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has released “Retail Sales off to a Good Start in 2023?,” an economic analysis of January retail sales and the impact on the plastic industry, authored by Chief Economist Dr. Perc Pineda.

Dr. Pineda writes: “If the economy continues to stay strong, and consumers remain engaged, plastic product shipments could increase as plastics and plastic products are part of household consumption. However, with the U.S. economic outlook continuing to evolve, a single data point does not reflect an underlying growth momentum in the economy. The U.S. economy is adjusting from a robust 5.9% post-COVID-19 growth rate in 2021 to long-run sustainable growth.”

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) is the only organization that supports the entire plastics supply chain, including Equipment Suppliers, Material Suppliers, Processors, and Recyclers, representing over one million workers in our $468 billion U.S. industry. PLASTICS advances the priorities of our members who are dedicated to investing in technologies that improve capabilities and advances in recycling and sustainability and providing essential products that allow for the protection and safety of our lives. Since 1937, PLASTICS has been working to make its members, and the sixth largest U.S. manufacturing industry, more globally competitive while supporting circularity through educational initiatives, industry-leading insights and events, convening opportunities and policy advocacy, including the largest plastics trade show in the Americas, NPE2024: The Plastics Show.

New Online Tool Maps PFAS Hotspots In Businesses Ahead Of EU Ban

GOTHENBURG, Sweden — February 23, 2023 — Today — just a couple of weeks after the big PFAS restriction proposal in the EU was published — ChemSec launches the PFAS Guide, which helps companies investigate the use of persistent chemicals within their businesses. The main feature of the PFAS Guide is the searchable database uncovering different PFAS uses and functions, but the online tool also provides guidance on different aspects of the phase-out process from regulation and investigation all the way to testing and supply chain communication.

“We’ve been working to support companies in chemical substitution for a long time, and the last few years we’ve gathered a group of companies working specifically on the PFAS issue. The discussions with them made it clear to us that a main challenge is understanding if and where in your business you may have PFAS”, says Dr. Anna Lennquist, Project Leader for the PFAS Guide.

PFAS are a source of growing concern

It has been estimated that 95 percent of all manufactured goods rely on some form of industrial chemical process. A large share of the chemicals used in these processes have been linked to adverse impacts on human health and the environment. PFAS are a clear example of this problem. PFAS have been manufactured and used in products such as make-up, non-stick pans, water- and greaseproof textiles, food-packaging materials, and firefighting foam since the 1950s and are still used in a wide variety of products around the world today.

But they are also substances of growing concern due to their problematic properties. Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of several thousand man-made chemicals that accumulate in the environment and cause health impacts for generations. They are, for example, linked to cancer, lung disease, diabetes, reproductive abnormalities and learning difficulties. Since PFAS do not degrade, these “forever chemicals” are now so widespread that is safe to say that every single human being on the planet have detectable levels of these toxic chemicals in their blood.

A couple of weeks ago, a big proposal to restrict PFAS in the EU was published. The five EU Member States behind the proposal submitted a broad restriction proposal that clearly shows the need for the industry to put all resources into phasing out all PFAS substances.

Many stakeholders are moving away from PFAS

At the same time, determination to get rid of “forever chemicals” is gaining momentum from other stakeholders as well. Over a hundred companies have, for example, come together to support a ban on PFAS.

“At Zound Industries, with our Brands Marshall and Urbanears, we are aware of the widespread use of PFAS in electronics. But we are on a mission to phase out PFAS in the headphones and speakers we design and sell, in order to make them circular. The PFAS Guide from ChemSec will be a valuable resource for any company in the industry”, says Anna Forsgren, Compliance and Sustainability Manager at Zound Industries.

Some of the world’s largest investment firms have also taken a stand. Last year, a group of investors sent out a letter to chemical companies encouraging them to stop the production of persistent chemicals. The success of the letter resulted in a recently launched formal investors initiative to tackle the PFAS crisis. The 50 institutional investors that are members of the initiative have more than US$10 trillion of assets under management or advice.

With upcoming PFAS restrictions in the EU and elsewhere, the new online tool could not have come at a better time. How to phase out PFAS is something all companies — large and small — will need to analyse sooner rather than later.

“The PFAS Guide is a very useful tool. The step-by-step guide makes it easy to identify potential uses of PFAS in products and gives guidance on how to phase it out as well. It’s a great help for companies looking to ensure that their products are PFAS-free”, says Louisa Raith Sørensen, Strategic Project Leader at Coop.
