2018 Year In Review

Jim-Phillips-colorBy Jim Phillips, Yarn Market Editor

Overall, many spinners were very happy with the state of their businesses in 2018. However, many remain concerned about instability in Washington and the impact that could have on the economy in the coming year.

As far as orders were concerned, they remained strong throughout the year, continuing an uptick that began in the latter half of 2017. “We are pleased with our overall business this year, and we still remain optimistic for 2019,” said one spinner. “But the continuing bickering and partisanship in the federal government, especially now that we will have split majorities in Congress, causes some apprehension. It’s a wait-and-see kind of thing. Everything could — and should — continue positively. But the current political environment could have everything turned upside down in a heartbeat.”

At least for now, consumer confidence continues to forecast good business conditions.

The Consumer Confidence Index, published by The Confidence Board, reported a slight decline in consumer confidence in November. But, for now, the Board, remains relatively unconcerned.

“Despite a small decline in November, consumer confidence remains at historically strong levels,” said Lynn Franco, Senior Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board. “Consumers’ assessment of current conditions increased slightly, with job growth the main driver of improvement. Expectations, on the other hand, weakened somewhat in November, primarily due to a less optimistic view of future business conditions and personal income prospects. Overall, consumers are still quite confident that economic growth will continue at a solid pace into early 2019. However, if expectations soften further in the coming months, the pace of growth is likely to begin moderating.”

NAFTA/USMCA

One of the major topics of the year — one that affected almost every business in the United States — was the renegotiation of NAFTA. At the end of September, The United States reached an agreement with Canada, along with Mexico, on an updated NAFTA.  The new agreement will be called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

It will still be some time before the new agreement can take effect, as it still needs to be ratified by all three countries. The U.S. Congress will not begin debate on the agreement until early 2019. As has been noted in numerous publications, this could present a potential snag. With the House under control of Democrats, many of whom have some issues with parts of the agreement, the potential exists for USMCA to be derailed before it even begins.

Textile officials were hailing the agreement as a win for both the United States and the textile industry. “The U.S. textile industry is pleased the United States, Mexico and Canada have reached an agreement because Canada and Mexico are its largest trading partners,” said National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) President & CEO Auggie Tantillo. He noted that products from the textile and apparel supply chain accounted for nearly $12 billion in U.S. exports to Canada and Mexico in 2017 in an NCTO release.

More Capacity On The Way

The U.S. yarn spinning industry began to thrive again when it finally got to the point where production was in line with demand. In the later years of the 2010s, after years of decline, the industry began to grow again. Numerous new plant announcements have been made in the past several years. “One of the big issues we have when demand is high, is that there are not enough ring-spinning spindles to meet customer demand in a timely fashion,” said one spinner. “Along with quality and production efficiency, speed to market is one of our industry’s most important advantages.”

Part of that issue will be solved by Keer America’s second spinning plant in South Carolina. The state-of-the-art ring-spinning plant began production on a limited number of spinning frames mid-year and, when fully operational, will operate 75,000 spindles capable of producing up to 40 million pounds of ring-spun yarn per year.

The first plant, which began operation in February of 2015, currently produces 1.1 million pounds of yarn per week of OE yarn. Phases III and IV, according to Keer, will be designed to produce cotton/synthetic blend spun yarns. The company anticipates groundbreaking next year.

Trade And China

In early December, U.S. President Donald Trump and China President Xi Jinping announced a “truce” in their escalating trade war. At this point, it is not known whether this means the current tariffs imposed by each country will remain in place or be rolled back to previous levels. And given the volatility of the situation, new escalations are possible. The Trump Administration is holding fast to a 90-day deadline it gave China for a new, lasting agreement. The deadline is March 1.

Spinners interviewed earlier said they have not been impacted much by the trade conflicts. “I don’t think we’ve seen any effects of it at all to this point,” said one industry observer. “It really depends on what happens next. We would certainly like to see textile and apparel products get more protection. If things don’t settle down, I think you will start to see a lot of U.S. companies look for suppliers in other Asian countries.”

In the January/February 2019 edition, Yarn Market will report on spinners’ expectations for the coming year.

PPG To Invest In Automated Dispense Cell Manufacturing For Automotive Parts And Accessories

PITTSBURGH — December 13, 2018 — PPG today announced that it is increasing its investment in automated dispense cell manufacturing of paint and related coatings for the automotive parts and accessories decorative (APAD) space. Financial details are not being disclosed.

Dispense cell technology enables PPG to dramatically accelerate production and approval of paint batches for vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and component suppliers. The technology allows coatings components to be automatically drawn from storage vats in the correct proportions and mixed directly in their shipping containers, vastly simplifying and increasing the efficiency of the coatings manufacturing process.

PPG recently launched an APAD dispense cell operation at its San Juan del Rio, Mexico, coatings facility and will begin production on an additional cell in 2019 in Sriperumbudur, India. These cells are in addition to PPG’s recent APAD investments in Germany and Russia and the dispense cells already online at the Company’s APAD facilities in Valladolid, Spain; Oak Creek, Wisconsin; and Tianjin, China.

“PPG’s automated dispense cell technology has greatly improved paint and coatings production for our customers around the world,” said Rodger Lee Pelo, PPG global general manager, APAD. “Our expansion of this unique capability reinforces PPG’s commitment to the APAD space and enables us to react much faster to customer needs while increasing product consistency and color accuracy.”

Dispense cell technology is considered critical in the automotive parts and accessories category due to the ever-expanding range of colors offered by OEMs and their components suppliers, as well as the increased use of plastics and other substrates. Automated production dramatically reduces product variability, leading to increased batch consistency in color, appearance and application as well as significantly reduced lead times for customers.

PPG strives to provide the lowest risk and highest yield rate for automotive parts and accessories customers. As a recognized expert in effectively matching OEM paint finishes on fascia and accessories, the company provides the technology, service and process excellence needed by OEMs and their leading suppliers.

Gibbs International Issues Letter Of Intent To Fund Echelon Materials’ Proprietary Production Loom

STAMFORD, Conn./SPARTANBURG, S.C. — December 13, 2018 — Echelon Materials today announced the receipt of a $750,000 Letter of Intent from Gibbs International Inc. to fund the manufacture of the only loom to mass produce TiTek for the commercial armor market.

This $750,000 funding is conditioned on Echelon Materials raising an additional $450,000 that is needed for market entry, working capital and operating expenses.

With today’s increasing threats of high-powered rifles, and with heavy, rigid and uncomfortable armor as the norm, TiTek is finally the protection those in Law Enforcement and the military deserve. TiTek’s defeat mechanism is cutting-edge — it’s a patented fabric that weaves tiny, sharp-edged titanium discs into the plane of the fabric using the very kevlar threads that comprise the fabric. These discs present their sharp edges to the incoming round and cut it to shreds as it passes. Once shredded by the TiTek fabric, debris from bullets is easily captured by the armor package’s backing layers that employ existing materials, such as aramids or polyethylenes.  Compared to traditional armor that “stops” the bullet by applying counter-force; TiTek-infused armor uses the bullet’s own energy to cut it apart, destroying it and making it easier to stop.

In addition to body armor, TiTek’s flexibility and lightweight allows for other applications, and not limited to, vehicles, aircraft, buildings, furniture, shields, and clothing.

“In testing the TiTek material, we have seen 7.62 M80 rounds turned into shrapnel — not a piece over the size of a 17-caliber BB — with bits and pieces spread over a 9-inch diameter in an armor pack weighing 1.9 lbs. per square foot,” said Bob Muller, Echelon Materials’ CEO. “This means that lightweight, flexible, breathable, rifle protection weighing up to 75-percent less than current Level IV plates is possible with TiTek, making that protection easier and more comfortable to wear,” Muller added.

“We are excited to partner with Mr. Muller and the Echelon team,” said Jimmy I. Gibbs, Gibbs International Chairman and CEO. “This revolutionary technology and the production loom can’t come soon enough as this industry is in a desperate need of better and more efficient solutions that can fill the gap which currently exists in the market and the increasing need for protection.”

Rockline Industries Reaches Major Safety Milestone With 10 Million Safe Work Hours At Arkansas Plant

SPRINGDALE, Ark. — December 13, 2018 — Today Rockline Industries announced that the Arkansas Department of Labor has recognized its Springdale, Ark., campus with an award for exceptional safety, achieving 10 million safe work hours without a lost time accident (LTA). This milestone puts Rockline Industries – Northwest Arkansas (NWA) in elite company because this milestone has only been achieved six other times since Arkansas began recognizing workplace safety in 1976.

“Our dedicated associates have developed a ‘Safety Can Do’ culture and their efforts to prevent even minor incidents are the greatest contributors to our safety success,”says Mark Fougerousse, EHS manager of Rockline NWA. “We watch out for each other, and have pride in our work environment. Together, we are always striving to be a zero incident facility. That means we put extra effort toward troubleshooting situations others would consider to be very minor and we reduce risk when we see it.”

Rockline associates are responsible and accountable to themselves and the safety of teammates around them. All area personnel are made aware of any observed safety issues noted during the monthly inspections, helping everyone to know what to watch for and to prevent repeat issues in the future.

“We have an incredible group of dedicated employees who believe that zero injuries are possible, at work and home,” said Joel Slank, general manager of the Springdale facility. “We pay attention to little details and look out for each other’s safety with genuine concern, every day. More important than any milestone achieved is the knowledge that our employees are acting safely and have a safe place to work. We have accomplished this in an environment of increased growth and significant facility modification, and it is a privilege to work with such a dedicated team.”

The award from the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Division is part of Arkansas’ overall educational program to encourage workplace safety by honoring companies whose employees have accumulated a significant number of work hours without a lost day away from work due to a work-related injury or illness.
