CleanTex Services’ Trenton Laundry Renews Hygienically Clean Commitment

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — March 22, 2019 — CleanTex Services, a family-owned healthcare launderer has recently been re-certified Hygienically Clean for Healthcare for its Trenton, N.J., laundry, reflecting its ongoing commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and its capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing. CleanTex Services serves customers in NY, NJ, PA and CT. Originally certified in December 2015, this renewal certification confirms the organization’s continuing dedication to infection prevention, compliance with recognized industry standards and processing healthcare textiles using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, a focal point for Hygienically Clean inspectors’ evaluation. The independent, third-party inspection must also confirm essential evidence that:

  • Employees are properly trained and protected;
  • Managers understand regulatory requirements;
  • OSHA-compliant; and
  • Physical plant operates effectively.

To achieve certification initially, laundries pass three rounds of outcome-based microbial testing, indicating that their processes are producing Hygienically Clean Healthcare textiles and diminished presence of yeast, mold and harmful bacteria. They also must pass a facility inspection. To maintain their certification, they must pass quarterly testing to ensure that as laundry conditions change, such as water quality, textile fabric composition and wash chemistry, laundered product quality is consistently maintained. Re-inspection occurs every two to three years.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for hospitals, surgery centers, medical offices, nursing homes and other medical facilities.

Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification acknowledges laundries’ effectiveness in protecting healthcare operations by verifying quality control procedures in linen, uniform and facility services operations related to the handling of textiles containing blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Certified laundries use processes, chemicals and BMPs acknowledged by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, American National Standards Institute and others. Introduced in 2012, Hygienically Clean Healthcare brought to North America the international cleanliness standards for healthcare linens and garments used worldwide by the Certification Association for Professional Textile Services and the European Committee for Standardization.

Objective experts in epidemiology, infection control, nursing and other healthcare professions work with Hygienically Clean launderers to ensure the certification continues to enforce the highest standards for producing clean healthcare textiles.

“Congratulations to CleanTex Services’ Trenton laundry on their re-certification,” said Joseph Ricci, TRSA president and CEO. “This achievement proves their continued commitment to infection prevention and that their laundry takes every step possible to prevent human illness.”

CleanTex Services also holds the TRSA Clean Green certification, proving their commitment to customers that their laundry is also dedicated to standards for operational efficiency and sustainability. Clean Green certification underscores ongoing sustainability efforts and adherence to the highest standards in their production and delivery operations.

Home Furnishing International Forms New Joint Venture Mattress Supplier Palmetto Pedic, LLC.

NEW YORK CITY — March 21, 2019 — Global fabric and home fashions manufacturer Home Furnishing International has formed a new joint venture, Palmetto Pedic LLC, to provide conventional foam and memory foam, mattresses, toppers, pillows, foundations, adjustable bases and accessories to the United States bedding, upholstered furniture and automotive industries.

Home Furnishing International Chairman and CEO David Li also will serve as chairman and CEO of the new joint venture firm. Respected Chinese entrepreneur and scientist Dr. Karl Li has been named president of Palmetto Pedic reporting to David Li; and veteran bedding retail buyer Michael King has been named executive vice president of marketing and merchandising, reporting to Dr. Li.

Home Furnishing International, a privately held vertical fabric and home fashions supplier with annual sales estimated in excess of $200 million, is the majority shareholder of the new company. Palmetto Pedic has been formed in partnership with a group of investors who own seven foam, mattress, bedding and accessories manufacturing facilities in China totaling more than 3 million square feet.

“The U.S. foam mattress and bedding market represents a huge, untapped opportunity for expansion, and we feel that this new company will help us maximize our potential for growth on a global scale,” explained David Li. “These investors already own and operate state-of-the-art vertical research and design operations, materials manufacturing factories, and finished product manufacturing plants, as well as marketing, sales and distribution facilities in China. These plants have established relationships and supply, directly or indirectly, specialized foam products to many top-tier customers worldwide, including some leading U.S. mattress manufacturers and importers, as well as luxury automobile maker Mercedes-Benz; automotive giant General Motors; intimate apparel trendsetter Triumph; and global consumer innovator 3M.

“Home Furnishing International has a long history of manufacturing in both the U.S. and China; we have the operational infrastructure, a mature and experienced labor force, and the extensive retailer and supplier connections that will enable us to quickly get up to speed and capitalize on the growth prospects in the American bedding, upholstery and automotive markets,” David Li continued. “We are already taking orders for mattresses, and expect to begin trial manufacturing foam bedding at our Gaffney, S.C., plant in April. We expect to begin pouring our own foams in Gaffney by the third quarter of 2019.”

Over the past two years, Home Furnishing International has more than doubled its U.S. manufacturing and distribution facilities in Gaffney, which now total more than 600,000 square feet in two locations. Approximately 50 percent of the Gaffney plants will be dedicated to Palmetto Pedic manufacturing and distribution, which will focus on providing conventional foam, memory foam, components and finished products to leading American manufacturers as an OEM supplier.

The new joint venture, with its U.S. manufacturing base, comes at a critical time of transition for the American market, due to the turmoil and unpredictability created by the U.S. International Trade Commission’s antidumping investigation of finished mattresses from China. Based on the ITC’s preliminary report, the U.S. Department of Commerce is expected to impose steep antidumping duties of at least 150 percent or higher on imports from China by late May.

“With antidumping duties pending on Chinese mattresses, the manufacturers and their existing U.S. customers are facing an uncertain future,” David Li explains. “By combining the research, development and technological expertise of these Chinese investors with Home Furnishing International’s modern U.S. manufacturing facilities, we believe we can become a leading supplier to the American bedding market.” HFI currently is a major provider of decorative pillows, window treatments, home décor, accessories and decorative fabrics for the U.S. market.

Expert Chinese scientist Dr. Karl Li will serve as president and chief merchandising officer for Palmetto Pedic, LLC. Dr. Li is a well-known pioneer in the field of foam research and development, credited with holding more than 100 patents in the field. He also serves as professor of Physical Chemistry at the Huaiyin Normal University (China.)

“When I first started my career in 1991, I was primarily interested in pure scientific research into materials physics and chemistry,” Dr. Li noted. “However, I became increasingly interested in how the materials that we were developing could be used for products that would actually enhance people’s quality of life. In 2001, I started to look into practical consumer products and ways to translate the new technologies that we were developing in conventional foam and memory foam into finished products.

“Two years later, we successfully entered the Japanese market with a line of multi-functional memory foam mattresses — which are similar to those in the USA — and pillows; these products incorporated a number of technological innovations, including photo-catalyst antibacterial functions, bamboo charcoal deodorization functions and other features,” Dr. Li continued. “In 2013 we started to sell memory foam mattresses and bath mats to selected American customers as well. With the formation of Palmetto Pedic LLC, I believe we will be able to develop a much wider spectrum of products to serve the needs of the large American consumer population, as well as build our business internationally.” As president of Palmetto Pedic, Dr. Li will split his time between research facilities in China and the company’s U.S. manufacturing plant in Gaffney.

David Li points out that the formation of Palmetto Pedic will allow Dr. Li to bring his scientific and technological expertise to the broader American consumer market, comparing the situation to having a top chef opening and running a trendy restaurant chain: “As the scientist ‘cooking up’ major innovations in foam research and manufacturing, Dr. Li will bring his imagination, creativity, technical knowledge and originality into the American bedding market, developing new products to benefit our customers as well as the ultimate consumer,” David Li said.

Technological expertise is just one part of the equation, however; Palmetto Pedic, LLC also will benefit from having an experienced retail executive in a high-profile role. Michael King, who has been the bedding buyer for preeminent department store group Macy’s for the past 26 years, will serve as Palmetto Pedic, LLC executive vice president of marketing and merchandising. Prior to joining Macy’s, King was a bedding buyer for Frederick & Nelson for 11 years; he started his career at May Company in Denver. King will be based out of HFI’s showroom at 295 Fifth Ave., New York, NY.

“There have been major changes in the bedding industry over the past few years, with dramatic shifts in the channels of distribution and the ways in which consumers purchase mattresses today,” King asserts. “These shifts present tremendous opportunities for Palmetto Pedic LLC to become the foremost OEM supplier of foam mattresses and accessories to major U.S. bedding manufacturers.

“Given all of the disruption in the mattress market — especially with the antidumping duties looming in the background — U.S. manufacturers have a very real and pressing need for a reliable supplier who can provide superior service, speed and consistency,” King added. “Palmetto Pedic, LLC is strategically positioned to become that leading supplier.”

David Li also expects Palmetto Pedic, LLC to capitalize on Home Furnishing International’s leadership position in the decorative fabrics market. “No other supplier has the vertical capacity that HFI has in the fabric market … and mattresses need to be covered in fabric,” he observes. “HFI is recognized as a world leader in the fabric industry, producing more than 300 million yards of fabric every year.

“We are well-known for technological innovation and developing proprietary yarns that offer superior performance characteristics as well as being environmentally friendly,” he continued. “We will be working closely with our U.S. customers to develop specialized fabrics for the mattress market in order to take that business to the next level.” In addition to its U.S. manufacturing and distribution plants, HFI currently operates more than 1 million square feet of manufacturing facilities in Rugao, China, encompassing weaving, dyeing, printing and finishing, as well as finished product production.

“The foam industry is a very capital- and technology-intensive industry,” Li added. “We are positioning HFI and Palmetto Pedic, LLC to become a world-class player in this very competitive business.”

Techtextil 2019 Exhibitor Preview: BRÜCKNER

LEONBERG, Germany — March 21, 2019 — BRÜCKNER will be on display at the Techtextil 2019 In Frankfurt.

The new BRÜCKNER SUPRA-FLOW BA Air-Through Thermofusion Oven

Particularly in the field of hygiene nonwovens, the trend goes towards products of a better quality with a smoother handle, more volume and of more uniform texture. Nonwovens producers worldwide are supported by the new Brückner SUPRA-FLOW BA belt oven, which gives them the technology to produce such high quality end products.

The new SUPRA-FLOW BA guarantees a particularly gentle transport of the unbonded web. This is achieved by a sophisticated air circulation design. It is also characterised by minimum heat consumption, high flow uniformity and constant temperature distribution over the entire working width. The good accessibility of the oven chamber leads to a high maintenance friendliness. The dryer is available in working widths up to 4600 mm. It is designed for production speeds of up to 250 m/min and thus offers potential for line optimization.

Typical end products, which are bonded on the Brückner SUPRA-FLOW BA high-end thermofusion oven according to the air-through principle, are nonwovens for diapers (ADL, topsheet, backsheet), nonwovens for feminine care and incontinence products but also filter nonwovens and special nonwovens.

The BRÜCKNER SUPRA-FLOW BX double belt dryer

One year ago Brückner presented the revised double belt oven for thermofusion of high-loft nonwovens to the expert public. The aim was to reduce the use of primary energy with a view to resource-conserving nonwovens production and thus to reduce production costs. With the double belt furnace SUPRA-FLOW BX, established in the market, Brückner’s engineers have succeeded in achieving not only this increase in efficiency, but also the re-construction of the air circulation with fewer individual parts in the sense of the guiding principle “a good design is simple”. Furthermore there were many small detail improvements, which led to the fact that in 2018 so many SUPRA-FLOW BX were sold in different configurations, as never before.

The oven is suitable for the production of high-loft nonwovens, medium as well as highly compressed fibre boards made of natural, synthetic and/or recycled fibres. It is a convective oven system which works according to the air-through principle. In each compartment the flow direction can be individually adjusted according to the product requirement. In most cases the basic material beside the matrix fibres are binding fibres melting at low temperatures such as bi-component fibres (PES/CoPES, PP/PR) and PP. Thermoplastic or duroplastic powders can be used also as binders.

The SUPRA-FLOW BX is particularly suitable for products with a higher weight, thickness and/or density and relatively high pressure losses during the flow through the product. The following processes can be implemented on the system: Thermofusion (for bonding PP, PET/CoPET, PP/PE), heat-setting and drying. The SUPRA-FLOW BX is of particular interest to manufacturers of mattresses, duvets, inserts, insulation, furniture (upholstery, cushions), cleaning (dry and wet wipes, painter’s cover foils), automotive components (headliners, thermal insulation, noise insulation, seat covers), thermal and acoustic insulation in the construction industry and carrier materials (floor coverings, technical coatings).

The BRÜCKNER SUPRA-FLOW BE belt dryer

This type of oven is particularly suitable for the gentle drying of binder-bonded lightweight nonwovens. For such lines Brückner can supply the belt dryer type SUPRA-FLOW BE as well as the foam padder, the cylinder dryer group and a smoothing calender downstream of the dryer. The Brückner SUPRA-FLOW BE is successfully in operation and produces high-quality nonwovens for the medical sector.

Minimum application unit ECO-COAT

Brückner has again improved and further developed its minimum application unit. The customer has the following advantages over a padder: Low-Add-On technology (fabric moisture < 60 g/m²), low water consumption, high energy savings in the subsequent drying processes, low residual liquor (2.5 l per m working width) and thus fewer chemicals which have to be disposed of during a batch change.

The ECO-COAT unit enables impregnation and precise one-sided Kiss Roll coating on the upper or lower side of the fabric web as well as functionalization such as hydrophobization or softener application by means of engraving roller pre-dosing. In addition, one-sided ink jet preparation is possible. Single-sided functionalizations with a wide variety of finishing chemicals can be realized, especially for fashion and technical applications. Brückner offers at any time the possibility to carry out tests on the laboratory plant in Leonberg with the advice of technologists.

ORITAIN Boosts Expertise In Cotton And Agriculture To Tackle Fraud In Global Fashion And Textile Supply Chains

LONDON — March 21, 2019 — Oritain™, the product and supply chain traceability specialist, has announced the appointment of Jeff Elder, former Vice President at J.G. Boswell, North America’s largest agricultural producer and one of the largest cotton growers.

Jeff Elder brings over 20 years’ experience overseeing the sales and marketing of J.G. Boswell Company’s crops — including pima cotton, tomato paste, cottonseed and safflower oils, and seed by-products — and 40 years with California agriculture, having been active in and served on the boards for many agricultural organizations. Elder’s vast experience and equally extensive network in both the cotton and agricultural industry will prove extremely beneficial in expanding Oritain’s current growth throughout the US, and globally.

Having been a driving force through all levels of the cotton industry, throughout most corners of the world (both previously as president of the Cotton Warehouse Association of America, and past chairman of Supima), Elder’s considerable knowledge of the cotton supply chain has earned him a significant standing in the industry and a wealth of insights.

In his role as Chair of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation, Elder remains actively involved in the progression of American agriculture, both in the development and investment of the next generation of industry leaders, bringing his continued learning to Oritain’s food traceability service.

This appointment is a further step from Oritain in helping the textiles industry solve global problems such as counterfeiting, blending and mitigating forced labor, and helping the food industry meet the ongoing demand for safe, traceable produce, underpinning animal welfare and environmental standards.

Rupert Hodges, executive director, Oritain said: “Jeff Elder joins Oritain at a time when the fashion and textile industry is under increasing scrutiny and CEOs are under pressure to secure their supply chains. Textiles can cross multiple borders and pass through numerous sets of hands, and with each exchange the risk of fraud increases.

“Jeff’s understanding of American crops, their supply chains and the issues faced by the cotton and agricultural industries will help us to protect global supply chains from the increasing threat of fraud.”

“Over the past 20 years, the cotton and agriculture industry has changed significantly. Illegally produced textiles are entering the legal supply chain – high quality cotton is being blended or substituted with low grade or unethically-produced alternatives,” Elder said. “Forensic traceability is key to ensuring transparent and ethical supply chains. I look forward to working with Oritain to support the industry to root out unscrupulous practices.”

LANXESS: Focus On New Mobility And The Substitution Of Polyamide 66

COLOGNE — March 19, 2019 — “High-Tech Thermoplastics for Future Mobility”: This is the slogan under which the High Performance Materials (HPM) business unit of the specialty chemicals company LANXESS will be showcasing at the VDI Congress “Plastics in Automotive Engineering” in Mannheim. “Our focus this year is on new applications in electromobility and cost-effective alternatives to polyamide 66 compounds. We are also focusing on lightweight design with continuous-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites and new solutions such as hollow-profile hybrid technology,” said Dr. Martin Wanders, head of Global Application Development in HPM.

Electromobility – growing market

Lanxess set up the “e-Powertrain team” in response to the tremendous application potential of its polyamides and polyesters in the market for forms of new mobility. The team helps customers from the international automotive industry to choose tailor-made application-specific materials for electric vehicles. “We also support our partners throughout the entire development chain for their components, for example with engineering services for the component design like moldflow calculations, structure simulations and tests on finished parts,” says Julian Haspel, who heads the global “e-Powertrain” team.

Lanxess sees a variety of important applications for its thermoplastics in the field of electromobility, including charging systems, inverters, electric motors, auxiliary systems (e.g. cooling pumps) and battery elements. Potential battery applications include cell holders, spacers, covers, module carriers and housing parts. Haspel: “Our thermoplastics are in many cases an alternative to conventional materials such as die-cast metals, for example in crash-relevant structural components of the battery. But there are also entirely new potential applications, for example with our electrically insulating but thermally conductive compounds.”

Support for substituting polyamide 66

Lanxess has recently observed increasing demand — mainly from the automotive industry — for alternatives to polyamide 66 due to the limited primary product capacities for this thermoplastic, which have led to supply bottlenecks and major price increases for compounds. “We are helping our customers to find alternative materials to secure a reliable and cost-effective supply and to minimize the technical risks involved in switching over to a new material. Our services include everything from innovative alternative materials and extensive service in aspects ranging from material data and application support to technical production support,” says Tim Albert, who heads a corresponding international team at HPM.

High-modulus polyamides for structural components

One example of a material innovation where polyamide 66 can in many cases be replaced is the new Durethan P (performance) polyamide 6 series. The products are extremely resistant to pulsating loads, even at the high temperatures inside the engine compartment. Their mechanical properties are similar to those of polyamide 66. “The substitution can usually be made using compounds with the same glass fiber content, which means that the components are not any heavier,” says Albert. At the VDI Congress, HPM will be showcasing from its product range two new examples featuring 50% and 60% glass-fiber reinforcement. Their high strength and rigidity make them ideal for the lightweight construction of battery components or other parts such as oil filter modules, chassis bearings, damper pistons and seats.

The future of the European automotive and plastics industries

Lanxess is also playing an active role in the congress program. Dr. Axel Tuchlenski, for example, who heads global product and application development at HPM, is one of the experts appearing in the panel discussion entitled “Innovations in the Automotive and Plastics Industry: Is Europe Running out of Time?”. The event will take place on April 3, 2019, at 9.45 a.m.
