MFG Chemical’s Gavin Family Receives Multiple Honors From Auburn University

DALTON, Ga. — September 23, 2019 — Charles E. Gavin III, Founder of MFG Chemical, and the Gavin family have received multiple honors from Auburn University.

In a special ceremony held on September 13, Auburn University’s Harbert Business College officially named the rooftop terrace of its new business building the “Gavin Terrace” in memory of Charles “Chuck” Gavin IV, who became CEO of the company his father founded, MFG Chemical.

Harbert Business College Dean, Professor Annette L. Ranft, hosted the commemoration, declaring, “Chuck graduated from the Harbert College in 1982 and worked with his father Charles E. Gavin III over many years at MFG Chemical, becoming CEO. Chuck and his wife Kim planned to leave a legacy of their own through a gift to support the Harbert College. Chuck had great affinity from an early age for Auburn and a love for Auburn football that was unsurpassed. The view from “Gavin Terrace” into the stadium is very fitting considering Chuck’s passion for Auburn football.”

MFG Chemical’s current President & CEO, Keith Arnold, attended the dedication ceremony, and commented: “Chuck Gavin was a wonderful man and a beloved leader for MFG Chemical. We are pleased that the new “Gavin Terrace” will help keep Chuck’s memory alive and inspire future business leaders and acts of philanthropy toward Auburn University.”

Auburn University’s Engineering College also remembered and honored the memory of Carol Ann Gavin, beloved mother of Chuck Gavin and wife of MFG Chemical Founder and former CEO Charles E. Gavin III. The Auburn Engineering Department has created and dedicated the Carol Ann Gavin Garden, covering 44,000 square feet of build out space. This open area provides students, faculty and staff with a tranquil spot to study, eat lunch or relax right in the heart of the engineering campus.

The creation of these special places at Auburn comes just one year after the dedication of the Carol Ann and Charles E. Gavin III Engineering Research Laboratory. Christopher B. Roberts, Dean of Engineering, addressed the audience and MFG Chemical Founder Charles E. Gavin III, stating, “Charles is visionary, innovative and transformational. He created a process for making carpet much more beautiful through the dyeing process, and after that, built one of the world’s greatest specialty chemical companies, MFG Chemical. Charles and the entire Gavin family, by making the Gavin Laboratory renovation possible and turning this once dilapidated space into an oasis, you’ve impacted future Auburn engineers for generations to come. Because of your belief in Auburn, and your love for it, this is all possible.”

A New Generation Of Fault Current Limiters Successfully Completes Performance Tests

ERIE, Pa. — September 19, 2019 — Eriez®, the majority shareholder of United Kingdom-based FaultCurrent Ltd. (FaultCurrent), is reporting results from a recent round of independent tests of its next generation Fault Current Limiter (pmFCL) which employs ferrite magnets at the core of its patented design. According to FaultCurrent, the final round of short circuit (fault limiting) tests — conducted at KEMA Laboratories in the Netherlands — successfully proved that its technology can be safely applied to a power system to facilitate the rapid connection of additional Distributed Generation without an electrical utility having to incur the costs and delays of network reinforcement.

FaultCurrent Chairman and CEO Martin Ansell said: “This is the final hurdle in a 7-year journey that has involved fundamental research, groundbreaking innovation, prototyping and re-engineering, resulting today in a proven market ready product.”  He adds, “We were able to test the short circuit (fault limiting) performance at both 50Hz and 60Hz at KEMA’s Laboratories, a world-leader in energy consulting, testing and certification, to confirm that our pmFCL can be used on power grids across the world.”

A number of companies have designed and built Fault Current Limiters using different technical approaches, from the application of Superconducting technologies to the introduction of Power Electronics. FaultCurrent’s approach was to design a truly “fit and forget” product that used simple permanent magnets at its core to provide a dependable, robust and energy efficient solution that is quick to install.  Uniquely, the pmFCL has no operating overhead and requires no maintenance beyond simple inspection.

The pmFCL works by providing additional fault current headroom when it is needed, presenting a low impedance during normal “in service” current flows until an abnormal fault current instantaneously forces the device into a higher impedance state, and in doing so, allows time for the power system’s existing infrastructure to react to isolate the fault safely. Post fault, the pmFCL instantly recovers, ready to protect the network again.

Ansell says FaultCurrent’s momentum has significantly increased since Eriez recently became the majority shareholder. “We have been able to accelerate the completion of our development program and are now working to appoint a network of sales representatives,” Ansell said. “We look forward to sharing additional updates as we continue to work to bring our state-of-the-art pmFCL to customers around the world.”

VEOCEL™ Introduces Eco Care Technology To Reinforce Commitment To Sustainable Viscose

LENZING, Austria — September 23, 2019 — Today the Lenzing Group (Lenzing) announced the introduction of Eco Care technology, which enhances the production of eco-friendly viscose fibers for the nonwoven industry. Eco Care technology features an eco-responsible production process that is guided by the rules underlying the EU Ecolabel1, a label of environmental excellence that is awarded to products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their life-cycle2. The manufacturing of VEOCEL™ Specialty Viscose fibers with Eco Care technology generates up to 50% lower emissions and water impact compared to generic viscose. According to Higg MSI tools, CO2 emissions and fossil resource use are approximately half that of the industry average.

Enabled by Eco Care technology, VEOCEL Specialty Viscose fibers originate from sustainably managed wood sources and are ideal for many nonwoven applications of baby, body and home segments, especially for various types of dry and wet wipes, sanitary pads for adult and feminine uses, and diapers. VEOCEL Specialty Viscose fibers build the common ground for innovative and sustainable solutions in the nonwoven industry and represent a versatile blending partner for other cellulosic fibers such as lyocell.

“We have recently unveiled the new certification criteria for VEOCEL, helping to establish the brand as a label of trust along the entire value chain. The VEOCEL brand logo can now be featured on products which use blends of raw materials that are entirely cellulosic and biodegradable. The introduction of the Eco Care technology is another key breakthrough for the VEOCEL brand, as it now enables VEOCEL branded fibers to be used in a wider range of nonwoven products, creating a greater sustainability impact in the industry. Moving forward, VEOCEL Specialty Viscose fibers with Eco Care technology will serve as an affordable sustainable alternative for nonwoven applications by making more sustainable viscose available,” said Jürgen Eizinger, vice president of Global Business Management Nonwovens, Lenzing AG.

“2019 is an exciting year for VEOCEL. We will continue to drive innovation and transparency efforts in the nonwovens segment and work closely with industry partners to co-create a more nature-friendly future,” added Eizinger.

VEOCEL Specialty Viscose fibers naturally attract and absorb water, enabling a homogenous distribution of liquid in nonwoven products. This feature is essential for dry and wet wipes and absorbent hygiene products as it offers a convenient way to clean and at the same time brings great comfort to the skin. Fibers produced with the Eco Care technology are certified clean and safe and are produced without any animal-derived materials. According to the Hot Button Report of Canopy, a Canadian non-profit organization, Lenzing is ranked as one of the best performing viscose producers worldwide for its sustainable wood and pulp sourcing practices.

COBRA Delivers First 100 Composite Fuselage Covers For Cutting-Edge Drones

CHONBURI, Thailand — September 19, 2019 –  COBRA International is collaborating with HG Robotics, a drone manufacturer that specializes in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the agricultural market, on a composite fuselage cover for the cutting-edge Tiger Drones.

Undertaking a full range of services with HG Robotics and having been involved from the outset: from the design and engineering through to the prototyping of the composite drone fuselage cover, COBRA has now delivered nearly 100 sets and will produce approximately 500 units throughout 2019.

The multi-rotor Tiger Drones typically carry spraying equipment and can also carry high definition cameras that provide a wide range of field information. Farmers can measure land profiles, identify any problem plants or areas and manage their cultivation in the most efficient way. The 420-millimeter square shaped fuselage cover protects the drone’s electronic controls and forms an aerodynamic fairing between the central fuselage and the craft’s 4 rotor arms.

The COBRA Design and Development team selected a composite laminate of glass fiber reinforcements for the cover — which don’t interfere with GPS signals used by the drone — and combined these with epoxy laminating resins in a hand laminated, vacuum bag consolidated production process.

COBRA also designed all of the mould tools for the project. The 2-piece aluminium mould was produced by one of COBRA’s long-term tooling partners. This metallic tooling provides an excellent surface finish to the part with absolutely minimal trimming and finishing required. Molded parts can go swiftly through a painting and clear coating process before final inspection and delivery to the client.
