In addition, an estimated 50 million euro investment will be allocated for the infrastructure preparation of the site. The project is expected to create approximatively 150 direct and indirect full-time jobs. In the coming months, Carbios expects to finalize a strong non-dilutive financial support from French Government and from the Grand-Est Region5, based on the offer received last week by Carbios, from the Minister of Industry, Agnès Pannier-Runacher and the President of Grand-Est Region, Jean Rottner.

This financial support will be conditional on the notification to the European Commission and on contractualization by French authorities. Carbios announced in its half-year results on September 30, 2021, a cash position of 112 million euros. Since then, Carbios has also secured a 30 million euro loan from EIB6

This collaboration reflects both parties’ ambition to address the growing concern of plastics pollution through the development of Carbios’ enzymatic bio-recycling process. This disruptive technology could accelerate the transition to a plastics Circular Economy.

With its world-first enzyme-based biological process, Carbios’ technology, named C-ZYME™, converts PET (the dominant polymer in bottles, trays and textiles made of polyester) into its core monomers, which can then be used to manufacture 100-percent recycled and infinitely recyclable PET. This first-of-a-kind manufacturing plant combines Carbios’ science and technology with Indorama Ventures’ world-class manufacturing capabilities. This collaboration will meet the growing needs of both demanding consumers and large consumer goods companies including Carbios’ partners and shareholders (L’Oréal, Michelin, L’Occitane, Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, Suntory Beverage & Food Europe) for more sustainable packaging.

1Estimated date, depending on the grant of the authorizations to build and operate and on the terms and conditions remaining to be defined for this collaboration between both parties.

2 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most abundantly used synthetic polyester in circulation today, with an estimated global production of 82 million metric tons per year (IHS Markit in 2020).

3 Subject to the completion of technical and economical due diligence in the coming few months.

4 Indorama Ventures operates 19 PET production plants on four continents in 11 countries (PET | Indorama Ventures).

5 Conditioned to aid notification to the European Commission and in-additional assessments by French authorities.

Uster’s Quality Management Platform Makes A Huge Different To Shopfloor Personnel

USTER, Switzerland — February 24, 2022 — Looking for vital information in a busy textile mill can be quick and easy — or a tedious job, turning minutes into hours. Heavy e-mail traffic can just add to the burden. That’s why leading Vietnamese producer Hoa Tho Textile chose Uster Quality Expert, to give fast access to centralized key data and drive major efficiency benefits.

Founded in 1962, Hoa Tho is part of one of Vietnam’s largest and longest-established textile and garment enterprises. Operating a number of mills, the company wanted to ensure that quality standards were equal across all of them — and equally high, to serve customers in demanding markets such as the USA, Europe, Japan and South Korea. So quality management must be comprehensive, including data from different locations as well as various instruments and systems, for quick reports and smart analysis.

One-stop quality data

Uster Quality Expert is the Quality Management Platform for advanced process optimization across yarn manufacturing processes. A single system provides full transparency and complete control, securing fiber, yarn and fabric quality. All information is in one place — definitely a valuable benefit of Quality Expert. Hoa Tho connected its Uster AFIS Pro 2, Uster Tester 6, Uster Tensojet 5 and Uster Quantum 3 yarn clearers to this one system.

With Quality Expert in place, the mill managers now have a common reference to compare quality levels in each mill. They can now access quality information very easily. Previously more time was needed to create quality reports, which were then distributed by email. “The information took too long to reach the right people and was not always up to date. Now, the latest quality results are available in real time and any required action can be taken immediately,” said Nguyen Huu Khanh, manager of the Yarns Technology Department at Hoa Tho Textile.

The all-round view

Connecting to Uster Quality Expert is the route to effective all-round process optimization in textile mills. The system expands its insightful analytics with valuable intelligence, as each additional instrument is connected. It is the ultimate Quality Management Platform to drive consistent quality in every part of the spinning process. That’s what decided the Vietnamese spinning mill to invest. “It is very important for us to control the quality in yarn clearing in combination with the quality results from blowroom, carding and roving,” Nguyen said. With Quality Expert, a combination of 100 percent in-line monitoring, precise laboratory testing and integrated intelligence delivers the power to predict potential faults and prevent claims.

Data-based preventive measures are a tremendous asset in yarn production, but Uster observes that customers also greatly appreciate the single Value Modules of Quality Expert. Each of these five modules is based on Application Intelligence, offering advantages in specific fields.

The Alarm Center creates awareness and triggers action — with problem-solving suggestions – in case of issues. Mill Analysis offers insightful analytics for data-based decisions, and Yarn Prognosis raises the spinner’s reputation to a new level with customers. The ‘star’ elements among the Value Modules are Total Contamination Control and Ring Spinning Optimization. TCC balances ejections in the blowroom with clearer cuts in winding in the most advanced way. RSO brings improved spinning performance with quality transparency from top to bottom of the cop.

Feelgood: efficiency and control

Nguyen has a secret favorite among Uster Quality Expert benefits: “The Uster Mobile Alert App is a great tool to access information while on the road, or away from the spinning mill. The personnel and I can be notified, and so solve most issues faster on the shopfloor. Our mill management has better control and this results in fewer problems needing to be escalated to me,” he says.

The Quality Management Platform was developed for decision-makers — but the biggest fans are actually the operators and managers working with the system on a daily basis. “Personally, I have a better view of the quality produced in our mills, while spending less time to get the information I need. I would not want to go back to the era before Quality Expert at any price,” says Nguyen.

Uster Quality Expert comes in two distinct versions — both with no compromises in ultimate analysis. It’s integrated within Uster Tester 6 and also available as a standalone solution.

Successful Webinar: Resource-Saving In Textile Processing

SINGAPORE — February 24, 2022 — More than 600 delegates from 58 countries subscribed to the latest VDMA textile machinery webinar on sustainable dyeing held on February 3, 2022 — a record since the monthly online series started in June 2020.

The webinar, entitled “Resource-saving in Textile Processing – Continuous Dyeing and Washing,” involved the three companies Monforts, DyStar® and Goller.

In outlining the capabilities of Monforts Thermex hotflue lines for the Econtrol® continuous dyeing process, the company’s Textile Technologies Engineer Jonas Beisel observed that the current industry focus is very much on cleaner processes and products in accordance with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments of the major fashion brands, and with further regulations to be expected.

“It is clear the textile industry has to adjust to this situation through new investments that enable a significant reduction in resource consumption to be achieved, but are easy to integrate into existing production systems, and Econtrol lines fit the bill,” he said.

Cellulosics

Econtrol is a continuous process for the dyeing of woven cellulosic fabrics that has already been well proven on the market, with more than 150 Monforts Thermex lines already in operation at mills worldwide.

Reactive dyestuffs are fixed into the fabric in a one-step dyeing and drying process with a controlled combination of steam and air. The entire pad-dry process takes just two-to-three minutes at a temperature of between 120-130°C and a relative humidity volume of 25 to 30 percent.

“The parameters for fixing reactive dyes are the temperature, the duration and the alkali content, but reactive dyes need a certain temperature in order to be fixed quickly,” Beisel said. “The Monforts solution is to raise the so-called “wet bulb temperature” inside the dyeing chamber with steam. This ensures the surface of the fabric is heated up to a stable temperature of around 68 degrees before being increased as the residual moisture of the fabric is drawn away.”

Benefits

The Econtrol pad-dry process has a number of immediate benefits. Compared to the common pad-dry-pad-steam process, no salt is used and no steamer is required for a separate fixation step.

Compared to the pad-dry-thermofix process, no urea is used and no smoke or deposits are generated, and unlike with the cold pad batch process, direct feedback of the dyeing results ensures no batching time is necessary and guarantees good reproducibility from the lab to bulk production.

An immediate wash off is also unnecessary, allowing for flexible production planning. The process is suitable for pale to dark shades with very good fastness properties.

Complementary services and systems

Complementing the Monforts presentation during the webinar, Bertram Seuthe, Global Business Development Manager at DyStar, outlined the importance of specific Levafix® /Remazol® reactive dyes and Dianix® disperse dyes for sustainable dyeing processes such as Econtrol®, Cadira® Continuous and CPB knit. In these processes Sera® auxiliaries are also employed for optimised wash-off results.

Guido Seiler, area sales manager at Fong’s Europe, also introduced the latest developments of the Goller brand for the washing process, which can reduce water consumption by between 10 to 20 percent, as well as reductions in both heating energy and waste generation, depending on the specific fabric construction and required shade.

“The Goller Sintensa Cyclone has a unique washing mechanism which is not affected by the fabric speed,” Seiler said. “The concept of the line is based on a programmable washing action — from low to very high — and on a washing effect independent of the fabric speed, with simultaneous gentle fabric transport. The continuously adjustable speed of the internal rotor causes on one hand an overpressure which presses the liquor through the transport drum and the fabric and on the other hand an underpressure which sucks the liquor through the fabric and transport drum. This interaction ensures a very good and intensive flow of the washing liquor through the fabric on the drum and results in a very high washing effect, independent of the fabric speed.”

The Goller Effecta module has been developed to meet customer requests for a lower space requirement, as well as low liquor content to optimize the use of water.

“The smaller distance between the upper and bottom roller helps the system to reduce edge curling on non-dimensional stable articles and additionally, the Thermplate heating system ensures a good, even and effective heating of the liquor inside the compartment,” Seiler explained, adding that the washing process comprises three separate steps — surface cleaning, soaping and rinsing and neutralization with final rinse. “Depending on the requested fabric speed, different washing compartments are required. During surface cleaning the main target is to remove the unfixed dyestuff from the fabric by high washing action. The Goller solution for this process is the Sintensa Cyclone, whereas the Effecta is employed in the other steps where more time is required to achieve the required result.”

NRF Stresses Urgency With West Coast Port Contract Negotiations

WASHINGTON — February 24, 2022 — To avoid additional supply chain disruptions, the National Retail Federation is encouraging the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) to begin contract negotiations well before the June 30 contract expiration.

“Imports at the nation’s major West Coast ports reached unprecedented levels over the past two years despite supply chain disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “We applaud the work of labor and management to address this surge, but we need to make sure the contract negotiations don’t result in additional congestion issues. The contract negotiations will come at a critical time for the retail industry as the peak shipping season for the important holiday season begins this summer.”

NRF wrote to ILWU and PMA leadership urging both groups to begin negotiations early in order to reach a contract agreement that would ensure continued cargo growth for the region. NRF warned that a delay in contract negotiations would negatively impact retailers and other stakeholders that rely on West Coast ports and may force retailers and other shippers to reevaluate their use of U.S. West Coast ports.

The letter states, “NRF’s members are continuing to adjust to the ongoing supply chain disruptions. Any kind of additional disruptions at the ports would add further costly delays to our members’ supply chains and likely add to inflation concerns and further threaten the economic recovery. Many members are already looking to put in place mitigation strategies to address additional disruptions related to the contract negotiations.”

Südwolle Fall/Winter 2023/24 Collection

NUREMBERG, Germany — February 23, 2022 — We all wish to get back to planning our lives. To go traveling again, enjoy days outdoors and share experiences, emotions, flavors and colors with those we love is all we want.

The “new normal” has already begun, the seeds of change are sprouting, and new habits are gradually taking the place of previous behaviors. Südwolle collections are designed to express this new awareness, while supporting the changes taking place around the world, with a mindful style and materials to suit new lifestyles.

The concept of seasonality in the F/W 2023/24 collection is increasingly vague, in favor of more functional categories in terms of performance, sustainability, innovative content and style.

Yarns are predominantly pure wool or blends, corresponding with the new concept of “dressing well” which is gaining ground among consumers — an individual style that promotes well being at various times of the day, a fluid, personal idea of elegance, that fits daily activities with ease.

The new formal replaces the traditional suit with “smart casual” jackets and trousers – comfortable, and carefully cut, they feature quality materials that guarantee wearability as well as durability. Focus on these factors makes for more informed and less impulse buying.

The renewed interest in heritage is met with Südwolle’s wool know-how and its basic essentials, updated to make them more sustainable by choosing certified fibers and chlorine-free anti-shrink treatments, for products with a longer lifespan thanks to domestic washing at low temperatures.

Sustainable innovation attentive to performance and durability goes hand in hand with the selection of earth- friendly recycled, recyclable and traceable materials blended with natural fibers.

Overview of the collection

The words inspiring the new collection are: sustainable, responsible, natural, recycled and high-performance. A leading position goes to the OTW® line of weaving yarns made with Omega Twist® technology, developed and patented by Südwolle Group, which gives yarns enhanced performances in terms of reduced pilling, greater elasticity, strength and durability.

Espresso TEX Nm 48/2 (100% untreated wool, 20.5 μ) was created to value the authentic naturalness of wool. Made with undyed, untreated merino wool, it is a twisted yarn for weaving, ideal, for example, for flannel suits and jacket. It is available in 4 shades of brown obtained by mixing different percentages of untreated raw wool and undyed, naturally brown wool.

Eolo Nm 24/2 (100% wool 20.5 μ) is an example of circular production and reuse of recycled wool within the Karma project. Starting with in-house pre- and post-production waste, a partly carded, partly combed, product is created at Südwolle Group facilities where this type of process can be carried out.

Rhein GOTS Nm 64/1 and Nm 64/2 (100% wool 19.5 μ) is the new pure wool yarn with GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard certification, which certifies its organic provenance. The same traceable origin

applies to Lerici GOTS X-COMPACT® Nm 60/1 (70% GOTS certified wool 19.5 μ, 30% Schappe Mulberry silk), a glossy yarn with reduced pilling effect for improved anti-abrasion performance, obtained with X- COMPACT® spinning technology.

Performance paired with reduced energy consumption is the added value of SRP Clark Nm 60/2 (48% wool 23.5 μ, 44% cationic polyester, 8% Donegal viscose), also available in a stretch version. The cationic polyester can be dyed blended with the wool, making double dying unnecessary and so saving on water and energy consumption. The addition of pre-dyed red, green or brown Donegal viscose to the blend creates a fluid look enhanced with slubbing and micro-nep effect.

Rosvic Nm 40/2 (98% wool 19.5 μ, 2% Lycra® 44 dtex) is a twisted yarn with Basolan treatment for comfort fabrics. It has a slightly textured surface with a contrasting or tone on tone micro mouliné pattern.

Key players among the circular knitting and hosiery yarns are Basak Nm 80/1 (80% wool TEC. 20% polyamide 2.2 dtex), OTW® Barone GRS Nm 60/2 (60% wool 23.5 μ TEC, 40% RENUTM recycled cationic polyester 2.2 dtex) and OTW® Concorde Nm 88/2 (100% wool 19.3 μ TEC), available in the new colour cards.

Higg Partners With Apparel Impact Institute, Offering Customized Carbon Reduction Strategies For Apparel Brands And Manufacturers

SAN FRANCISCO — February 23, 2022 — Higg, the sustainability insights platform for the consumer goods industry, has partnered with the Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) to launch a new measurable carbon management program for manufacturing facilities. The Carbon Leadership Program, led by Aii’s strategic partner RESET Carbon, developed a new carbon assessment as a collective effort to reduce global supply chain carbon emissions. Higg will serve as the technology partner hosting the assessment.

Once manufacturers complete the assessment, they receive a potential carbon reduction score, which helps brands prioritize manufacturing partners with the highest potential for improvement.  As an optional second step, with the support of a dedicated engineer, nominated manufacturers will receive personalized strategies, training, and tools to help set and achieve their carbon targets. On a monthly basis thereafter, manufacturers share assessment data via the Higg platform to help engineers and brands understand progress and identify future areas of improvement.

“The industry has long lacked a standard and pragmatic approach for manufacturing facilities to determine and achieve their carbon reduction potential,” said Kurt Kipka, vice president of Aii. “When RESET Carbon proposed an in-depth facility questionnaire for creating curated action plans alongside the support of an engineer, we knew it was the perfect solution. Now, our brand partners can confidently nominate, and in some cases, sponsor manufacturing suppliers to help them set or confirm attainable reduction goals.”

“American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) is a longtime supporter of Higg, Aii and RESET Carbon. We view these organizations working together as a significant step for the retail industry and more importantly for climate change. Carbon Tech Assessment provides AEO the opportunity to develop more meaningful, impactful relationships with our partners while also prioritizing the suppliers we connect with,” said Michelle Tarry, senior director, Responsible Sourcing and Sustainability at AEO. “This enables AEO to move the conversation beyond introductory topics like energy efficiency to specific remedies, such as coal phase-out and renewable energy. With this data now available on the Higg platform, AEO will be able to reach suppliers faster and implement solutions more efficiently.”

Given that the “Scope 3” area of global supply chains create the most emissions, it’s critical that apparel brands and their suppliers share data to collaborate on carbon reduction plans. As brands work to measure their full impact, they’ll be prepared to set science based targets, which are gaining importance in combating climate change.

“At C&A, we understand the enormous risks climate change poses to our industry and the communities where we source from. Having had the privilege to pilot the Carbon Tech Assessment, we’re excited by the Aii and Higg integration. We look forward to using Higg’s platform to collect environmental data more efficiently, helping us support our suppliers by setting science backed climate goals and action plans as well as building practical knowledge on the implementation together,” said Eunice Cheung, senior project officer – Supply Chain Environmental Stewardship at C&A.

“We’re committed to providing businesses actionable data and insights on their carbon impact so they can evaluate emissions and make strategic decisions and changes to improve performance,” said Jason Kibbey, CEO, Higg. “Offering this carbon assessment on Higg’s platform allows brands access to even more data in one place, delivering a comprehensive view of their environmental impact.”
