Culp Inc. Conducts Company-Wide Global Giving Initiative

HIGH POINT, N.C. — February 25, 2022 — In conjunction with Valentine’s Day celebrations, High Point-based textile company, Culp Inc. together with its consolidated subsidiaries, CULP, decided to “Share the Love,” not only with its local High Point community, but also with communities of the company’s facilities around the world. February 1-14, CULP conducted the company’s first-ever global giving initiative, aptly named, “Share the Love.”

The original concept for the giving initiative was to conduct an employee food drive for a local food pantry in High Point, but the idea quickly grew from there. “Originally, we were considering a food drive with the associates at our Cut and Sew facility and our corporate headquarters, both located in High Point,” said Teresa Huffman, senior vice-president of human resources at Culp Inc. “We made a connection last fall with Rockingham Family Charities, and after realizing their food pantry shelves were almost depleted, we knew we could help. So, we decided we would also conduct a food drive at our Stokesdale facility at the same time. Excitement for the idea led to a global initiative to include all of CULP’s worldwide facilities in the Share the Love campaign.”

In preparation for the event, CULP’s facilities in North Carolina, Tennessee, Canada, Haiti, and China sprang into action and identified local organizations they wanted to support. “For our international facilities to participate, we had to consider the cultural norms for each country. We wanted each location to participate in a way that was significant for them,” Huffman explained.

CULP’s U.S. and Canadian locations all donated food to local food banks. Associates from CULP’s China facilities contributed to help cancer patients, and CULP’s associates in Haiti made blankets in house with CULP fabric, and then donated them to a local orphanage and the local police department.

“We always want to support the communities in which we operate,” said Culp Inc. President and CEO Iv Culp. “We are thrilled with the success of our first company-wide giving campaign, and I am extremely proud of our associates around the world for contributing in such a meaningful way.  We look forward to ongoing opportunities to help people in need with this type of global giving initiative.”

Gunze Launches TENALEAF™ Absorbable Adhesion Barrier In Japan

OSAKA, Japan — February 23, 2022 — Gunze Ltd. is pleased to announce that it has obtained medical device approval to manufacture and sell TENALEAF™, the first sheet-type absorbable adhesion barrier made in Japan. The company is planning to launch the product in March 2022 through its subsidiary Gunze Medical Japan in the Japanese market.

As the average life expectancy increases, the possibility of undergoing multiple surgeries in one’s lifetime also rises. The use of an absorbable adhesion barrier is expanding to reduce postoperative organ adhesions, which can lead to difficult second and subsequent surgeries. Also, in order to improve the patient’s clinical outcome, laparoscopic surgery has recently been growing.

Gunze developed its absorbable adhesion barrier by applying proprietary absorbable material technology with the goal of providing an innovative solution in this area. This device provides surgeons with a new option during open surgery and minimally invasive surgery, which can enable easy manipulation, provide moderate adhesive strength for repositioning and conformable placement. The company strives to expand its recognition by informing the new product features and benefits to surgeons and their patients.

What are “postoperative organ adhesions”?

They typically occur after surgical intervention, where organs and/or tissue adhere to each other during the tissue remodeling process. It occurs frequently regardless of the surgical procedure, and may cause postoperative complications such as intestinal obstruction and infertility, which may require removal of adhesions in the second or subsequent surgery.

SINTX Announces Milestones In The Development And Testing Of Antipathogenic Fabrics

SALT LAKE CITY — February 23, 2022 — SINTX Technologies Inc., an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of advanced ceramics, announced new results on the development of manufacturing technologies to produce fabrics impregnated with SINTX silicon nitride, and the antipathogenic testing of these fabrics.

SINTX has previously announced a collaboration to develop large-scale fabric impregnation technology with a private company based in Europe. The antibacterial properties of silicon nitride embedded fabric produced from this “dry” process were recently tested at an accredited independent commercial laboratory. The lab used ASTM and AATCC protocols and found that this silicon nitride embedded fabric inactivated Staphylococcus Aureus in both protocols.

Development of a manufacturing process has also continued via the utilization of the new“pre-pilot line” equipment and “wet” impregnation process at SINTX’s internal research and development laboratory. The most recent silicon nitride embedded fabric made from this process was tested against SARS-CoV-2 and was found to inactivate the virus with greater efficiency than fabric produced and tested previously. Since the testing occurred at a different high profile academic institution, these results also mark the first independent validation of the antiviral fabric properties observed at the University of Rochester. SINTX’s investments in new equipment and process development are yielding improved results.

SINTX considers these antipathogenic test results significant — two different silicon nitride impregnation processes were tested at two different independent laboratories using standard protocols. These are compelling milestones in the company’s progress in developing antipathogenic fabrics that can be leveraged across different applications such as medical gowns, consumer facemasks, and more.

Carbios To Build In France Its First-Of-A-Kind Manufacturing Plant For Fully Bio-Recycled PET In Partnership With Indorama Ventures

CLERMONT-FERRAND, France — February 23, 2022 — Carbios and Indorama Ventures jointly announced a collaboration to build a manufacturing plant operating Carbios’ PET bio-recycling technology at Indorama Ventures’ PET production site in France (Longlaville, Meurthe-et-Moselle). The plan is for reference plant to be operational in 20251 with a processing capacity of 50,000 tons of PET2 waste per year and creating 150 direct and indirect jobs. Indorama ventures plans to co-invest in this project3 and will consider expanding Carbios’ unique biological recycling process at other PET sites4 for future developments. This strategic project is strongly supported by the French Government and the Grand-Est Region5 with significant non-dilutive financing.

Bruno Le Maire, French Minister of the Economy, Finance and the Recovery, said: “We are very pleased that Carbios and Indorama Ventures have chosen France to build their first 100-percent bio-recycled PET manufacturing plant. From cutting-edge science, Carbios has developed a disruptive technology and process that enables efficient transformation of plastic waste into novel valuable products. This breakthrough project showcases the government’s ambition within France 2030: getting ready for the challenges of the next decade. Combining biotechnology and a renewed industrial ambition will be key to achieve a more circular economy.”

Agnès Pannier-Runacher, Minister Delegate for Industry, noted: “The announcement by Carbios of a flagship project of enzymatic plastic recycling demonstrates our ability to foster the emergence of innovative industry leaders with cutting edge technologies for the energy transition. It is a success for industrial startups in France as well as a key milestone in the France 2030 strategy, making our industry ready to meet the needs of the Transition.”

Jean Rottner, President of Grand-Est Region, said: “Contributing to a cleaner planet while creating new jobs and economic value is our core mission. Hence, we are very pleased to welcome Carbios in Grand-Est Region and very proud to greet Longlaville site selection for their world-first 100-percent bio-recycled PET plant, in partnership with Indorama Ventures, already present and very active in our Region. Carbios reference plant is fully integrated within Grand-Est Region ambition to become a leading territory for PET circular economy. This project represents a first significant milestone in building our complete ecosystem.”

After having successfully started-up its demonstration plant in Clermont-Ferrand, Carbios is now moving one step further towards the industrialization and commercialization by partnering with Indorama Ventures. The goal is to build and operate in France the world’s first industrial-scale enzymatic PET bio-recycling plant, with a processing capacity estimated at ca. 50,000 tons of post-consumer PET waste per year, equivalent to 2 billion PET bottles or 2.5 billion PET trays.

“With this first medium-sized plant, we want to become the world reference for the Circular Economy of plastics and textiles. By engaging in such a partnership with Indorama Ventures, we confirm our commitment to pursue our initial industrial development in France. This plant will pave the way towards international commercial and industrial deployment. We are grateful to our shareholders, partners, the French Government, and Grand-Est Region for sharing Carbios’ ambitions and vision towards a profitable Circular Economy,” commented Emmanuel Ladent, CEO of Carbios.

After the positive results of Indorama Ventures’ initial analysis on the technical soundness of Carbios’ technology over the past several months, both parties agreed to complete a due diligence process. A feasibility study will be conducted for the industrialization of Carbios’ technology on Indorama Ventures’ French production site. Subject to the successful completion of these technical and economical evaluations, Indorama Ventures would co-invest in the project.

“We are pleased to implement Carbios’ innovative and transformative technology at our Longlaville site. Bio-recycled PET addresses customers’ growing demand to contribute to a cleaner planet through high-quality plastics while decreasing the use of hydrocarbons.” adds D K Agarwal, CEO of Indorama Ventures.

The capital investment required for the project is expected to be around 150 million euros for Carbios core technology, including in particular an additional purification step, which has been integrated into the process. In addition, an estimated 50 million euro investment will be allocated for the infrastructure preparation of the site. The project is expected to create approximatively 150 direct and indirect full-time jobs. In the coming months, Carbios expects to finalize a strong non-dilutive financial support from French Government and from the Grand-Est Region5, based on the offer received last week by Carbios, from the Minister of Industry, Agnès Pannier-Runacher and the President of Grand-Est Region, Jean Rottner.

This financial support will be conditional on the notification to the European Commission and on contractualization by French authorities. Carbios announced in its half-year results on September 30, 2021, a cash position of 112 million euros. Since then, Carbios has also secured a 30 million euro loan from EIB6

This collaboration reflects both parties’ ambition to address the growing concern of plastics pollution through the development of Carbios’ enzymatic bio-recycling process. This disruptive technology could accelerate the transition to a plastics Circular Economy.

With its world-first enzyme-based biological process, Carbios’ technology, named C-ZYME™, converts PET (the dominant polymer in bottles, trays and textiles made of polyester) into its core monomers, which can then be used to manufacture 100-percent recycled and infinitely recyclable PET. This first-of-a-kind manufacturing plant combines Carbios’ science and technology with Indorama Ventures’ world-class manufacturing capabilities. This collaboration will meet the growing needs of both demanding consumers and large consumer goods companies including Carbios’ partners and shareholders (L’Oréal, Michelin, L’Occitane, Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, Suntory Beverage & Food Europe) for more sustainable packaging.

1Estimated date, depending on the grant of the authorizations to build and operate and on the terms and conditions remaining to be defined for this collaboration between both parties.

2 Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the most abundantly used synthetic polyester in circulation today, with an estimated global production of 82 million metric tons per year (IHS Markit in 2020).

3 Subject to the completion of technical and economical due diligence in the coming few months.

4 Indorama Ventures operates 19 PET production plants on four continents in 11 countries (PET | Indorama Ventures).

5 Conditioned to aid notification to the European Commission and in-additional assessments by French authorities.
