TENCEL™, Advance Denim And Officina+39 Pioneer Advancements In Zero Cotton Denim Aesthetics

LENZING, Austria — July 6, 2023 — Lenzing Group, a global producer of wood-based specialty fibers, has joined forces with denim mill Advance Denim and Italian chemical company Officina+39 to unveil new advancements in zero cotton denim aesthetics. The collaboration highlights the continued commitment of the three companies in promoting sustainable development of the denim industry through the introduction of a brand-new zero cotton denim collection made of TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers.

As consumers become more aware of the environmental footprint of denim apparels, denim brands have experimented with new approaches to create and produce more sustainable denim products. Dedicated to creating denim apparel with reduced environmental impact, the collection comprises of Advance Denim’s innovative denim fabrics made of TENCEL Lyocell fibers and Officina+39’s special finishing technique, eco- efficient bleach treatment, and “Aqualess” sustainable wash process that saves up to 75 percent on water consumption in comparison to conventional wash process that gives a similar wash down effect. The result is a specially curated collection with zero cotton composition featuring a traditional “authentic denim” look that is usually found on cotton denim, thus revealing new design possibilities and aesthetics using sustainable alternatives for denim products.

Expanding design possibilities and enhancing aesthetics to reduce environmental impact

“In the past, zero cotton fabrics were known to have a softer feel and a cleaner look. The creation of an authentic vintage look and a respectively drier hand feel using TENCEL Lyocell fibers will inspire new design possibilities and aesthetics for denim brands which ultimately means greater variety of sustainable denim options for consumers. The partnership between TENCEL, Advance Denim, and Officina+39 is truly encouraging and underscores our relentless efforts and commitment towards pioneering denim innovations which empower the creation of more sustainable denim products, ultimately reducing the environmental footprint of the denim industry,” said Tuncay Kılıçkan, Lenzing’s head of Global Business Development, Denim.

Zero cotton denim fabrics made with TENCEL Lyocell fibers offer softness, comfort, and sheen to the finished product. Compared with cotton, TENCEL Lyocell fibers offer better moisture management to support body temperature regulation. Zero cotton denim fabrics made with TENCEL Lyocell fibers also have the added benefit of being laser sensitive. Together with the right wash technique, they are a truly sustainable denim alternative from fiber to finished product.

Pioneering denim innovations for a sustainable denim industry

“The purpose of this collaboration is to combine zero cotton garments with our unique eco-washing technique to achieve the authentic conventional look and wash that is generally achieved on cotton denim. The collaboration matches perfectly with our ‘Aqualess Mission’ as we continue to explore new ways to enhance the efficiency of our production process while reducing the use of energy, space, and water resources,” said Andrea Venier, managing director of Officina+39.

“The collaboration with TENCEL and Advance Denim is founded on our shared vision to create denim products with minimal environmental impact. By combining a mix of sustainable fibers to create a zero cotton fabric and a low impact eco-washing technique, we are offering unique denim innovation that will truly appeal to the needs of denim brands and the industry as a whole. Our hope is that this collaboration will encourage industry-wide innovations for the sustainable development of the sector,” said Michael Lam, director of Advance Denim.

The new special zero cotton denim collection will be showcased at the Lenzing booth during Kingpins New York (Green area #7) from July 19-20, 2023.

HON Partners With Seaqual Initiative, Continuing To Make Sustainability A Top Priority

MUSCATINE, Iowa — July 5, 2023 — Some 12 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year and remain in the water for centuries. Ocean plastics are among the most alarming environmental concerns, permeating the food chain through all species, including ourselves. A patch of floating debris in the Pacific Ocean is effectively the third largest island in the world behind Greenland and Australia.

That’s why HON supports the SEAQUAL INITIATIVE which creates inspiring, sustainable SEAQUAL certified products from SEAQUAL® MARINE PLASTIC. The initiative works with ocean clean-ups from around the globe to bring value to the waste they recover.

HNI’s Textiles and Finishes Team has been leading efforts to introduce sustainable fabrics made from Seaqual Yarn. The fabrics consist of Seaqual Marine Plastic PLASTIC from recovered marine litter and post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These fabrics are available for the majority of HON’s award-winning seating options, office dividers and organization solutions, and consist of the following sustainable materials:

  • Kai Fabric (Grade 2): 64-percent Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester, 36-percent Seaqual (33-percent Post- Consumer Recycled Polyester, 3-percent Seaqual Upcycled Marine Plastic)
  • Getaway Fabric (Grade 3): 77-percent Polyester, 23-percent Seaqual (21-percent Post-Consumer Recycled, 2-percent Seaqual Upcycled Marine Plastic)
  • Wavelength Fabric (Grade 2): 68-percent Polyester, 27-percent Seaqual (24-percent Post-Consumer Recycled, 3-percent Seaqual Upcycled Marine Plastic), 5-percent Olefin
  • Vast Fabric (Grade A): 78-percent Seaqual (70-percent Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester, 8-percent Seaqual Upcycled Marine Plastic), 22-percent Post-Consumer Recycled Polyester

These fabrics are as soft and durable as their predecessors, and available in a fresh, full range of colors that may surprise you. From cool and serene Beach, Bay, and Tundra tones to warmer Grasslands, Countryside, and Garden hues, these post-consumer fabrics create a connection with the natural world we all share.

“We are one of the first office furniture manufacturers to offer something like this in our textile portfolio,” says Kandice Tjebkes, HNI Director, Textiles and Finishes. “And while we already had many fabrics in our offering that feature pre- and post-consumer recycled content, this initiative takes our sustainability efforts to the next level because of its direct impact on improving the state of our oceans and marine life.”

ITMA 2023: Groz-Beckert Welcomes More Than 7,000 Customers And Business Partners At Its Trade Fair Booth

ALBSTADT, Germany/MILAN, Italy — July 5, 2023 — June 8-14, 2023, the international trade fair for textile machinery manufacturing ITMA took place in Milan, Italy. In total, more than 111,000 guests visited the trade fair. Groz-Beckert was able to present its numerous innovations to more than 7,000 customers and business partners, as well as welcoming many other visitors to its booth — including over 280 students.

An international audience gathered at the Groz-Beckert booth: guests came from 84 different countries. The majority of visitors came from Italy with just under 15 percent, followed by Germany with 14 percent, Turkey with 11 percent, India with 9 percent and the USA with 3 percent. For the first time, HR specialists were on hand at the Groz-Beckert booth to look after the student groups, offering the young people comprehensive insights together with experts from the Technology and Development Center (TEZ).

Groz-Beckert presented numerous innovations from its six product divisions Knitting, Weaving, Felting, Tufting, Carding and Sewing at the ITMA. One focus of the innovations was on the topics of efficiency, process stability and sustainability. While the topic of sustainability was reflected in the products on the one hand, a separate area in the Groz-Beckert Gallery was dedicated to the topic on the other. Here it was shown what contribution Groz-Beckert is making to making its own productions and its sites sustainable.

The Gallery also offered insights into general topics relating to Groz-Beckert in form of graphics, animations and videos. Small explanatory texts provided additional background information. The Gallery enabled visitors to get to know the company from a different perspective.

A special magnet of the booth was the Cooperation Corner of the Knitting product area. Here, two new knitting systems and a new compound needle for circular knitting machines were presented, which were developed together with machine manufacturers. In addition, live presentations were held to highlight the successful cooperations in greater detail. The flat knitting, legwear and warp knitting product groups also had innovations in store: from special application needles (SANTM) and long-life dur™ needles to new modules and system parts.

The Weaving division impressed trade show visitors with its innovative technical weaving reeds. The new product enables the supply in the production of fabrics of high fineness, e.g. for filtration (both wire and plastic fabrics). The division also recorded a special trade show success: the demonstration model of the WarpMasterPlus was sold directly in Milan to a customer in Turkey.

The Felting (Nonwovens) product area presented no less than two world firsts at the fair: a needle with a new notch design and the Groz-Beckert felting needle module for the innovative MicroPunch intensive needling technology (Dilo). Both products met with very great visitor interest.

The Tufting product area presented its proven Gauge Part System for the production of tufted floor coverings. At the booth, customers were able to see for themselves that the components in the Gauge Part System from Groz-Beckert are perfectly coordinated and guarantee smooth interaction.

Various new and further developments were also on show in the Carding product area. For the nonwovens industry, the division presented, among other things, the world’s finest interlinked card clothing for reduced crash risk. For the spinning industry, the area exhibited a new maintenance-free reel clothing with increased service life and lower maintenance costs.

The Sewing product area also enjoyed a high number of specific visitors – even though ITMA does not focus on the sewing industry. Interest in the division’s various special application needles (SANTM) was correspondingly high. Likewise, the patented quality management system INH (Ideal Needle Handling) received a lot of attention.

The appearance of the Technology and Development Center (TEZ) completed the Groz-Beckert booth. The TEZ experts presented to interested visitors the numerous opportunities available to customers and partners at the TEZ. In cooperation with external partners, the TEZ can be used as an optimization, development or business partner – depending on requirements and customer wishes.

Overall, the ITMA was a complete success for Groz-Beckert. The quality of visitors was exceptionally high – numerous decision-makers and key contacts were present and visited the Groz-Beckert booth.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — July 5, 2023 — Global textile manufacturer, Milliken & Company, announced today an expansion to its Milliken Outdoor Fabrics line, Outer Realm. The new collection, premiering at Casual Market Atlanta in July, joins the company’s debut collection, New Vistas, to extend its popular outdoor performance fabrics line.

Milliken first entered the outdoor fabric market at the 2022 Casual Market Chicago show with its New Vistas line, a line of performance fabrics designed to move effortlessly from indoors to outdoors. Due to the positive response to the company’s entrance, Milliken is debuting new color options for New Vistas and its second collection from the line, Outer Realm, at this year’s show.

“When we entered the outdoor fabric market in 2022, we knew we were supplying the industry with something they had been missing for years — durable, high-performing performance fabrics that have sustainability top of mind,” said Benji Bagwell, vice president of Decor in the Textile Business of Milliken & Company. “With the introduction of Outer Realm, it’s clear the industry was hungry for innovation in the outdoor space, and we’re excited to provide even more options that deliver on both design and performance.”

New introductions at Casual Market Atlanta include:

  • Outer Realm — a new outdoor collection of striped and patterned decorative fabrics with 14 patterns across 68 SKUs.

“We’re seeing consumers looking to invest in the outdoor spaces they’ve spent the past three years building and bring a more personal, design-forward aesthetic to their living areas. We are well-positioned to support outdoor furniture manufacturers who want to provide these consumers with sustainable, beautiful elements,” Bagwell said.

Global Textile Manufacturer Publishes Independently Accredited Environmental Product Declarations

MIRFIELD, England  — July 5, 2023 — Global textile manufacturer and designer of contract and transport fabrics, Camira has issued Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for 21 of its products.

Demonstrating the business’s commitment to transparency and sustainable manufacturing, the EPDs are based on a life cycle assessment which evaluates the environmental impact of fabrics acrost their entire lifecycle.

Third-party verified by SCS Global Services, an international leader in environmental certifications, the EPDs analyse the entire production process from raw material extraction, transportation, packaging, manufacturing, use and end-of-life. The main impact categories covered under the EPDs are climate change, acidification, eutrophication, ozone depletion and fossil fuel depletion; there are 13 environmental indicators in total.

In partnership with SCS Global, Camira examined its natural fibre and wool-plant based fabrics, as well as several synthetic textiles, made from post-consumer recycled polyester. The results provide comparable and reliable data for the construction and design industry to use when evaluating the environmental impact of Camira’s fabrics.

Commenting on the EPDs, Director of Marketing and Sustainability at Camira Ian Burn said: “Obtaining EPDs for Camira products has been a major undertaking for the business over the last two years. Using primary data from Camira’s manufacturing processes and key supply chain partners, as well as secondary data from third party sources, we’re now able to share crucial information with our stakeholders and provide a comprehensive overview of the environmental impact of our fabrics.”

Valid until 2028, the EPDs are defined by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) as a type III environmental declaration which is compliant with the ISO 14025 and contributes towards Building Standards such as LEEDv4 and BREEAM.

“We never lose sight of where our products start and finish,” Burn noted. “That’s because we’re so deeply entwined in all the different textile manufacturing processes, going right back to sourcing raw wool on sheep farms in New Zealand to spinning yarn, weaving and knitting fabrics, dyeing and finishing.

“We’re very pleased to be able to demonstrate our continued commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and to create fabrics that our customers can trust.”

The EPDs form part of a wider sustainability strategy for Camira, which will now look to target specific areas within its manufacturing supply chain to improve the overall carbon footprint across its entire portfolio of products.

Italian Textile Machinery: With Growth In 2022, The EU’s Green Deal Strategies Now Pose New Challenges

MILAN, Italy — July 5, 2023 — Innovation is no doubt at the heart of the challenges that await Italy’s textile machinery industry in the near future, a fact that was stated at the General Assembly of ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, held on July 4th. President Alessandro Zucchi presented industry data for the Italian textile machinery sector for 2022, showing that production increased by 13 percent, for a value of 2.7 billion euros, while exports grew by 15 percent (2.3 billion euros).

The year 2022 marked yet another year of growth for the sector, following that which was recorded in 2021. However, for the second half of the year, uncertainties characterizing the current macroeconomic outlook also proved to affect Italy’s textile machinery sector, showing signs of a general slowdown. The results of the Italian edition of ITMA, the industry’s preeminent global exhibition held last June in Milan, will hopefully play an essential role in providing further growth for 2023. The fair was certainly successful both in terms of the many technology innovations presented and for the number of visitors in attendance (over 111,000 units). The sector now awaits to quantify this effect on upcoming tangible orders.

Italian machinery manufacturers have played a decisive role in presenting new technology trends at ITMA, with Zucchi stating: “Innovation is the discriminating element between those who look to the future with optimism and those who will instead be forced to follow in pursuit.” In the future, innovation will continue to make a difference in our sector, above all in light of strategies put forward by the European Union regarding the so-called Green Deal.

“With the strategies for ‘sustainable and circular products’ launched by the European Commission to implement Green Deal objectives, these initiatives — which are currently voluntary — will be included in a defined legislative and regulatory scenario,” Zucchi said. “This is an approach that covers a product’s entire life span, from design to waste management. The challenge is certainly complex, and textile companies can face it if supported by innovative machinery and systems.” The dialogue begun by Italian textile machinery manufacturers with the entire textile supply chain has generated the Green Label, the Digital Ready initiative and, more recently the Recyclability Index for machinery, representing an indispensable condition for a more eco-friendly fashion industry, one that is increasingly efficient and circular in outlook.

During the private meeting of ACIMIT’s General Assembly, Marco Salvadè was appointed new president of ACIMIT to succeed Alessandro Zucchi.

Marco Salvadè Appointed New ACIMIT President

Salvadè

MILAN, Italy — July 5, 2023 — A changing of the guard at the top of ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers. Indeed, at the association’s General Assembly held on July 4, 2023, Marco Salvadè was appointed to replace Alessandro Zucchi as president of ACIMIT.

Born in Como in 1967, Salvadè is married with two children. He began his career at Salvadè S.r.l., a family-owned company specializing in finishing machinery founded by his father and uncle in 1967. After being a member of the company’s board of directors, he has been president since 2021.

Salvadè has long been active in the life of the association. Since 2018 he has been a member of ACIMIT’s General Council, and since March 2023 he has been part of the Italian delegation at CEMATEX, the Committee of European Textile Machinery Associations.

Following the election of Salvadè, the General Assembly expressed its gratitude to the outgoing president Zucchi who has guided the association for the past six years.

Along with the new president, the General Assembly also elected its new Vice Presidents, Chiara Bonino (Bonino Carding Machines S.r.l.), Federico Businaro (Sperotto Rimar S.r.l.), Ugo Ghilardi (Itema S.p.A.) and Cristian Locatelli (Marzoli Machines Textile S.r.l.).

Salvadè’s first comments as newly appointed ACIMIT president: “I wish to thank the Assembly for the trust they have placed in me, and I want to express my gratitude to the former President Alessandro Zucchi for everything he has done during the last six years to strengthen the role of the association and of Italian industry on the international scene. With the new vice-presidents and the ACIMIT Board, I will continue the work that has been done in recent years by previous presidents. It will certainly not be a simple task, but one that will no doubt prove stimulating. My primary goal is to increase the sense of belonging to ACIMIT of its member companies, with which we share the same values, and to adjust the association’s strategies to changing conditions in the economic and geopolitical context.”
