VERIGRAFT To Use AI To Increase Quality Of Vascular Grafts

GOTHENBURG, Sweden — December 14, 2023 — Swedish tissue therapy company VERIGRAFT today announced that along with the University of Skövde, SciCross and RISE, it is the joint recipient of a SEK 6 million grant from Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova to develop an AI-based method to increase quality of graft manufacturing.

VERIGRAFT has developed a pioneering technique that uses autologous components from the recipient’s blood to create personalized tissue-engineered veins (P-TEV) that can be implanted without the need for immunosuppressive drugs. The Company is currently applying these grafts in the TECVI-1 first-in-man clinical trial in patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

In the new project due to run through to October 2026, researchers will gather data about genes, cells, proteins, and other factors from the recipient’s healthy vessels and various stages of the blood vessel production. In addition, data from both prior to implantation and one year after transplantation will be collected. The datasets will then be used to train an AI-model to understand patterns in the information and help predict manufacturing quality parameters. The goal is to use the method in the future during the manufacturing process and to accelerate product release for transplantation into a patient.

“We are delighted to participate in this project since our long-term aim is develop personalized vein and artery grafts at scale and with highest quality,” says VERIGRAFT CEO Petter Björquist. “The data gathered in this project will also help us move towards 3D printing of graft scaffolds.”

“Our goal is to come up with improved AI tools that are digitalized and scalable for industrial production lines of ATMPs such as VERIGRAFTS’s tissue grafts. This will help patients gain access to new and promising treatments,” says Jane Synnergren, project leader and Professor in Bioinformatics, University of Skövde.

NCTO: National Defense Authorization Act Aims To Expand Government Procurement Of American-Made Goods In Boost For U.S. Textile Industry

WASHINGTON — December 14, 2023 — The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), spanning the entire spectrum of U.S. textiles from fiber to finished sewn products, commended Congress for passing the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), legislation that will help preserve the Berry Amendment supply chain and direct the Department of Defense to expand its procurement of domestically-made textile goods for military use.

“We applaud the House and Senate for getting NDAA across the finish line and are pleased the legislation will now go to President Biden for his signature,” said NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas. “NCTO sincerely thanks Rep. Don Davis (D-NC) for sponsoring language expressing concern about offshoring textile manufacturing and highlighting the need for the DOD and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to procure more domestically-produced textile goods for military use. The language also requires the DOD to report on the feasibility of requiring American-made home textile goods to be used on military installations.”

“We also want to thank Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT) who sponsored language expressing concern about economic factors impacting the capacity of the U.S. textile industry to meet DOD requirements and calling on the agency to assess labor shortages, contract forecasting and lack of investment in manufacturing capabilities and report back to Congress.”

Finally, this NDAA report language calls for DOD to report to Congress its assessment of the textile industry as it relates to labor shortages, contract forecasting and lack of investment in manufacturing capabilities.

“The domestic textile industry and supply chain are vital to the warm industrial base for the production of critical items that contribute to our nation’s health and safety. It is imperative that Congress and the administration continue to support this industry—a key contributor to our national defense that supplies over 8,000 products a year to our men and women in uniform—through expanded government procurement of American-made items. The NDAA is critical to supporting this manufacturing base,” Glas said.

Paka® Releases PAKACLOUD™, An Alpaca Fiber Fleece Alternative

BOULDER, Colo. — December 14, 2023 — Paka, an innovator in alpaca apparel, today launched its latest material innovation in alpaca fiber: PAKACLOUD™. This alpaca-based fleece is the first of its kind according to the company, and outperforms standard synthetic fleece in warmth to weight ratio, testing twice as warm in CLO value tests.

The original “fleece” fabric in the 1970’s was synthetic, despite the word originating from natural animal fiber. With PAKACLOUD, Paka is bringing fleece back to its origin with a pullover crafted with fully traceable alpaca fleece. The alpaca wool in PAKACLOUD features hollow medullated air pockets, which reduce heat transfer and create an insulating buffer compared to synthetic fibers, which have a heavier, less insulating solid fiber structure. Alpaca wool also boasts exceptional moisture management, antibacterial and thermoregulating characteristics owed to alpacas’ evolution in the highly fluctuating alpine environment of the Andes.

Traditional synthetic fleece, made from oil, is the largest contributor to microplastic water contamination in the clothing industry, shedding up to 250,000 microfibers in a single wash. PAKACLOUD offers a more sustainable option for the full fleece lifecycle: Paka’s alpaca fiber is renewable and ethically-sourced and the natural fibers in the fabric blend don’t shed microplastic pollution into our waterways when washed.

“What’s crazy to me is that the word ‘fleece’ means the wooly covering of an animal,” said Kris Cody, PAKA Founder and CEO. “Yet 95 percent of fleeces currently made are from oil — polyester, acrylic, nylon. I’m so proud that we’ve re-infused nature back into fleece and made it 2x warmer in doing so.”

The PAKACLOUD fleece is made with baby alpaca fiber, named for the softness of the wool. Each pullover features a handwoven Inca ID crafted by women artisans employed at 4x the living wage in Peru, and cordlock system at the hem featuring pullers made from corn byproduct. The PAKACLOUD is available in a Unisex fit in Oat, Navy and Black for $165.

Hologenix Expands Offering To Include CELLIANT® Print Applications

LOS ANGELES — December 13, 2023 — Materials science leader Hologenix is on a mission to bring the health and wellness benefits of infrared to the most people possible. In the spirit of its perennial innovation, the company has announced that its flagship product CELLIANT® infrared (IR) technology, a natural blend of IR-generating bioceramic minerals, is now more widely available from the company as a printed coating, expanding the uses of the technology and increasing the number of prospective partners. The innovation has already been named a Selection in the Fibers & Insulations Category of the ISPO Textrends Awards just last month.

Traditionally, CELLIANT has been embedded directly into fibers and yarns. However, for its print applications, CELLIANT fine mineral powder can be easily added directly onto the surface of all different fabric types. The company is particularly energized about how this expands the array of sustainable offerings that CELLIANT can be incorporated into, and is looking forward to partnering with brands to print CELLIANT on their eco-friendly fabrics. CELLIANT Print may be a cost-effective alternative to in-yarn solutions and allows for a more efficient supply chain.

In a process that is similar to screen printing, CELLIANT Print can be applied to a partner’s existing preferred fabrics or to a new fabric to create a variety of different product applications. For brands who are seeking a smaller pattern roller for apparel, orthopedic products or other close-to-skin projects, CELLIANT Print can accommodate this. There is also a larger pattern roller for bedding and larger-scale applications. As long as the print covers 80% of the fabric’s surface, the design possibilities for the print itself are virtually endless. CELLIANT Print has undergone mechanical testing for wash tests and can be confirmed to last the useful life of the product, for 50+ washes. By applying CELLIANT Print directly onto the fabric, brand partners are able to use CELLIANT with a higher loading of bioceramic minerals than what would otherwise be possible with an in-yarn solution. This makes it ideal for recovery and performance purposes. In fact, an example of a CELLIANT Print application on kinesiology tape, KT Tape® PRO Oxygen™ was launched in April to great success.

“Our company is built on innovation and CELLIANT Print is another step forward in bringing the infrared advantage to a wider audience,” said Seth Casden, Hologenix Co-founder and CEO.

The first chance to discuss CELLIANT Print in person in 2024 will come at the Heimtextil show in Frankfurt, from January 9-12. Interested parties can make an appointment by emailing hello@celliant.com.

US Flammability Code References Current AATCC Laundering Procedure

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — December 14, 2023 — In October 2023, the United Stated Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) completed the rulemaking procedure to revise the Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles in 16 CFR part 1610. The new regulations will go into effect six months later, on April 22, 2024. For more than a year, commissioners have considered data and public comment on several clarifications and updates, including reference to AATCC LP 1 Laboratory Procedure for Home Laundering: Machine Washing.

The revisions address three main areas. First, they aim to clarify and streamline the provisions regarding test result codes (i.e., burn codes), which help determine the classification of a textile and whether it may be used for clothing. The amendments remove an unnecessary code and revise wording in the provisions to clarify the existing requirements. Second, the amendments revise the stop thread specification, which indicates the thread that must be used in flammability testing. The description has become unclear, as threads matching the description in the Standard are no longer readily available. Third, amendments revise the refurbishing requirements in the Standard, which address dry cleaning and laundering specimens during the testing process. In recent years, there have been increasing restrictions on the use of the dry cleaning solvent specified in the Standard, and washing machines that meet the specifications required in the Standard are no longer made.

The new refurbishing specifications reference AATCC LP1-2021. The CPSC says, “Staff expects that this will reduce burdens on testing laboratories because it will eliminate the need to maintain and repair older machines and allow those testing laboratories that can no longer maintain or obtain washing machines that comply with the current Standard to continue to test to the Standard.” Existing machines meeting the older specifications in AATCC TM124-2006 may still be used.

AATCC LP1 is available in the current AATCC Manual of International Test Methods and Procedures and as a downloadable PDF. Because it is incorporated in a federal regulation, the document is available at no cost. Specified detergent for flammability testing is also available directly from AATCC. The CPSC announcement explains that the reference to AATCC LP1 will reduce confusion and cost as well as testing errors.

YKK’s New DynaPel™ Water-Repellant Zipper Wins Best Product In ISPO Textrends Competition

DynaPel ISPO Award – Best Product in the accessories category

ATLANTA — December 13, 2023 —The ISPO Textrends judges have selected YKK’s DynaPel™ water-repellent zipper as the Best Product in the accessories category. The competition, held twice a year in conjunction with the ISPO trade show, recognizes the most innovative performance textiles, components, and apparel.

Designed to be compatible with garment recycling systems, the DynaPel zipper uses GTT’s EMPEL® technology instead of the standard PU film to achieve its water repellency. The lack of a PU film helps remove one of the barriers of textile-to-textile recycling of performance apparel by eliminating the urethane material, which presents challenges to garment recycling processes.1

“Receiving an ISPO Textrends Award helps validate the technology and our efforts to develop fasteners for circular systems,” said Terry Tsukumo, vice president, Product Strategy Division, Global Sales Headquarters, YKK Corp. “By employing EMPEL® technology, we can achieve the robust water protection expected from YKK® products while eliminating the challenges that PU poses to recycling systems.”

Conventional chemical and mechanical garment recycling systems cannot process the polyurethane film commonly used on water-repellent zippers, necessitating the removal of zippers from garments before recycling. This additional processing step often deters recyclers from accepting garments with PU zippers, resulting in unnecessary waste.

EMPEL technology uses advanced green chemistry devoid of PFAS and a specialized manufacturing process that allows the chemistry to penetrate the yarn and encapsulate it with a water-repellent layer through molecular cross-linking. The molecular cross-linking creates an extremely durable layer that is highly resistant to abrasion and invisible to the eye.

1 It is recommended to trial products in your targeted recycling system to fully assess its processability.
