We believe that a CertainT-certified supply chain elevates customers’ brands and products by establishing the transparency and truth that consumers desire. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Sun Chemical Supply.”

From Plastic Waste To Shoe Of The Future: Sympatex To Introduce A Study For The Design Of A Water-Proof Shoe 4.0 At The 2019 ISPO Trade Fair

MUICH/UNTERFÖHRING, Germany — January 24, 2019 – What does the waterproof “Shoe 4.0” of the future look like, if it can be ecologically sustained within a closed loop system at the same time? At its exhibit booth (hall 1 booth 300) during the 2019 ISPO, Sympatex will offer a potential answer to this essential question with a production line consisting of a plastic shredder, extruder and 3D printer to demonstrate the recycling value of plastic waste in the shoe industry, once again doing justice to its role as an undisputed pioneer in the field of sustainable functional textiles. The study illustrates how in the near future a waterproof shoe can be created from recycled materials using a modular design concept, and then broken down into the individual raw materials again with little effort. “Shoe Design 4.0” is one in a series of numerous lighthouse projects that Sympatex has recently used to show just how far the fashion and outdoor industry can already come in manufacturing and designing sustainable, waterproof apparel and shoes that are highly functional at the same time.

From waste to waterproof shoe

To illustrate the amount of valuable raw materials that are still being carelessly thrown away today, as partner of the ISPO Sport Week, Sympatex is collaborating with Munich-based sporting goods retailer Globetrotter to organize a plogging event (collecting waste while jogging) the day before the trade fair kicks-off. Sympatex has invited Erik Ahlström, Swedish creator of plogging, to join engaged consumers to collect waste during a run through the center of Munich. A portion of the collected waste will be brought to the Sympatex exhibit booth, where the PET plastic will be shredded on-site and extruded to a filament, which will then be fed into a 3D printer. In the next step, the printer will produce an outer shoe material that together with Utmospheric™ — the recently introduced seamless and waterproof Sympatex inner shoe — will represent the basic element of a waterproof shoe. The sole of this sustainable shoe is a Vibram sole, realized in Ecostep compound, a special compound made of a minimum of 30-percent recycled rubber. The Italian company Vibram, world leader in the production of high performance rubber soles, is heavily focused on sustainability and is very pleased to support Sympatex for this initiative. Vibram itself is engaged in a program called “the sustainable way”: it’s a concrete plan to improve sustainability performance that accurately identifies the activities and projects to undertake as company in the short, medium and long term to guarantee economic growth whilst respecting people and the planet. ISPO visitors are cordially invited to follow the production process for this waterproof, upcycled “Shoe Design 4.0” live over the course of the four-day trade fair at the Sympatex exhibit booth.

“Each year, 23 billion* pairs of shoes manufactured from new raw materials are thrown into the trash at the end of their life cycle, or in most cases incinerated in open fires, an extreme waste of resources that also pollutes the environment, and an absolutely irresponsible approach when one considers the more sustainable alternatives that could be implemented by the industry,” explains Dr. Rüdiger Fox, managing director at Sympatex. “With this new lighthouse project, we want to rouse the industry and spur our market partners into a creative dialogue and collaboration. While Sympatex is not a shoe specialist, our development activities over the past few months have shown that a conscious decision is sufficient to pursue new paths toward industry-wide, sustainable shoe production based on a closed loop system. Reinventing ourselves as an industry in such a way is similar to the way Tesla is revolutionizing the automotive world. But time is running out — and together we can succeed,” added Fox.

Innovative Products, Additional Capacity Fueled Record Growth For APV Engineered Coatings in 2018

AKRON, Ohio — January 23, 2019 — The year 2018 marked several important milestones for APV Engineered Coatings. Not only did the company celebrate its 140th anniversary of service, it also had its highest sales revenue in its history with a six percent year-over-year growth rate.

APV experienced the largest year-over-year sales growth in three primary industry segments: aerospace (+18 percent); flexible vinyl, films and textile (+16.5 percent); and tire and rubber manufacturing (+4.25 percent). While much of this growth was attributed to APV’s 400+ existing customers, new business was also up in 2018, by 4 percent.

“As the global economy expanded in 2018, APV was in a good position to meet the increased production demands of manufacturers and key customers,” said Thomas Venarge, president, APV Engineered Coatings. “Many of those customers turned to APV for innovative product developments for niche applications. Some of these niche applications include a binder solution for lithium ion battery electrodes, maskant slurries and products for high temperature diffusion coating of turbine blades, anti-graffiti coatings for rolled vinyl, and high performance PVDF-based topcoats for composite building products … it’s truly diverse.”

Increased Manufacturing Capacity

APV continued its ongoing capacity expansion in 2018 by investing in new production equipment. This included seven new high-speed dispersers, located throughout the plant, that allowed the company to quickly and flexibly scale production to meet rapid-turn orders of any size, from 50 to 2,000-gallon batches. This additional production equipment helped support the approximate 1.7 million gallons of finished product APV produced in 2018.

The company currently boasts about 185,000 square feet of manufacturing space, 62,000 square feet of warehouse space and 4,500 square feet of laboratory space over its 22-acre campus. Plans call for APV to build an additional 19,000 square foot warehouse in 2019, which will free about 6,000 square feet of existing warehouse for manufacturing. This is in addition to the 33,000-square-foott warehouse building that was finalized in July 2018.

“APV is committed to expanding our physical presence in Akron’s industrial community and to supporting similar expansion by other industrial companies here,” Venarge said. “For example, APV is partnering with county and city officials, the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce, FirstEnergy and Pleasant Valley Corp. to redevelop 20.5 acres of land owned by Akron and APV into an industrial site called Firestone Business Park. The goal of the project is to continue to grow commerce and create jobs in the area, and we officially broke ground last month.”

Industry Accolades

APV also was recognized in 2018 with awards for two of the company’s leading brands:

  • NeverFade® Exterior Restoration Coatings won a Product Innovation Award and a Special Citation for Sustainability from Architectural Products Magazine. NeverFade was recognized for its excellent warranty and service life as well as for being naturally sustainable with its long lifecycle and low VOC content.
  • VYNGUARD® Polycarbonate Anti-Microbial Coatings received a Top Product designation in the Specialty Function Coatings category as part of the inaugural PaintSquare Prestige Award, for the product’s value to the industry.

“We are honored that industry experts have chosen APV Engineered Coatings’ products as worthy recipients of these prestigious awards,” Venarge concluded. “It’s a testament to our talented 100+ employees and to the customer-focused innovation that drives APV to succeed.”

UK First For Icon Graphics With Durst Rho 512R LED Investment

LEATHERHEAD, Surrey — January 23, 2019 — Icon Graphics has invested in Durst technology for the second time in 12 months, now adding a Rho 512R LED printer to its headquarters in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, in another United Kingdom first for the company.

Icon Graphics, which completed installation of the UK’s first Rho P10 250HS PLUS 6C + W inkjet printer in December 2017, now has 5-meter wide and dedicated roll-to-roll printing capabilities. The installation of the Rho 512R LED is the first in the United Kingdom from Durst, manufacturer of advanced digital printing production technologies.

The investment opens up important additional opportunities in markets including events/exhibitions, point of sale and retail sectors, such as lightbox work. Icon Graphics is a large-format digital print, sign and direct-to-media specialist that works with the United Kingdom’s largest design agencies and many high profile blue chip companies.

Previously, 5-meter wide work had to be either sub-contracted out, which could easily mean a two-day delay, or turned down. Now the work can be produced in-house in as little as two hours.

Neville Tosar, director of Icon Graphics, said: “From my first-year experience, I had no hesitation in getting a Durst again, although I did my homework. This is new LED technology from Durst and I think LED will be the future. This second machine also prints at an amazing quality and is incredibly quick and flexible. I come from an engineering background and soon realised how well these machines are built and, pound for pound, the machine represents really good value. Investing in technology is a way of making the best use of staff and making them more productive.”

He added: “I have nothing but praise for the way we have been treated. Durst is also a family-owned company and provides really good support and service, not that we need it because both machines are extremely reliable. It was really good to visit Durst in Lienz and the headquarters at Brixen where the machine was manufactured.”

Peter Bray, managing director of Durst UK and Ireland, said: “This is another quantum leap forward for Icon Graphics, which is the first company in the UK and Ireland to install a Durst Rho 512R LED system, which is especially suitable for thermo-sensitive substrates and benefits from a new ink system. It is another example of how increasing numbers of companies are turning to Durst to partner them as part of the transformation and digitization of industrial production processes.”

All The Lights Are Green — MADE IN GREEN By OEKO-TEX® On The Road To Success Worldwide

ZÜRICH, Switzerland — January 23, 2019 — More and more manufacturers of home textiles, such as bedding and towels, are focusing on sustainability. Brands and retailers are increasingly relying on relevant labels like MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® as a consumer communication tool. From the January 8-11, 2019, visitors to the Oeko-Tex booth at the international Heimtextil trade fair in Frankfurt saw just how much the topic of sustainability is shaping the global textile industry.

Consumers have especially high demands of textiles with direct and continuous skin contact, preferring products that are verifiably harmless to health and come from sustainable and socially responsible production facilities. These are the criteria of the MADE IN GREEN label. Every issued label has a unique product ID or QR code, which allows customers to trace the manufacturing route of the respective item and thus make a more informed purchase decision right in the store. Internationally recognized brands and retailers with connected supply chains, such Macy’s and Costco are increasingly taking advantage of these benefits. Together with their suppliers, such as Dibella, Welspun and Birla Century, they can credibly show that each stage of production fulfils the specified quality, environmental and labour standards. Manufacturers that market their own products, such as Calida, Egeria, Irisette, Sonoma, Matheis or Charisma, have also been improving their market positions with Made In Green by Oeko-Tex.

Heat-Recovery And Exhaust Air Pollution Control At Getzner AG In Bludenz, Austria

LEONBERG, Germany — January 23, 2019 — Vorarlberg is the westernmost province of Austria, bordering Switzerland and Germany. With the impressive alpine scenery, it is not surprising that many tourists come here who like hiking or skiing. Although Vorarlberg is a famous tourist destination, only about 6% of the gross social product is generated by tourism – a sign of a strong industry with a high export share.

The textile industry, probably the strongest branch of industry in the last two centuries, has lost its supremacy there in the meantime. However, it is still prominently represented: one of the 20 largest industrial companies in Vorarlberg belongs to the textile industry – Getzner AG in Bludenz.

Founded 200 years ago, Getzner AG is today the leading company for the production of African damask fabrics and one of the leading manufacturers of shirt fashion fabrics. In the new production halls at Getzner AG’s main plant in Bludenz, fabrics are woven and finished for ready-made garments. The fabrics are finished in special processes mainly on new BRÜCKNER stenters. As substances evaporate from the fabric during the textile finishing processes, the stenters have to be vacuumed off and this exhaust air has to be cleaned before being emitted into the environment.

The exhaust air treatment on the new stenters of Getzner AG is carried out by a multi-stage BRÜCKNER ECO-HEAT and ECO-AIR system. In the first ECO-HEAT heat-recovery system, heated fresh air is generated for the drying process, which noticeably reduces energy consumption. In the second ECO-HEAT heat-recovery system, water is heated for the company’s internal heating system and thus, depending on the heating requirement, up to 85% of the invested heat energy is recovered. The pollutants from the exhaust air are condensed and separated in the subsequent ECO-AIR exhaust air scrubber. A silencer behind the exhaust air fan reduces the exhaust noise to a minimum.

The proven ECO-HEAT components guarantee high heat transfer efficiency and a particularly robust and maintenance-friendly design. Since the heat exchangers have to be cleaned at regular intervals from unavoidable deposits in order to maintain full performance, they are easy to remove. The heat exchangers are boiled regularly in the cleaning bath supplied. As Getzner AG has replacement heat exchanger modules in stock, the heat exchangers are cleaned without any time pressure.

With this modern multi-stage exhaust air system Getzner AG achieves a high energy efficiency, because most of the exhaust air heat is recovered in BRÜCKNER ECO-HEAT systems. In addition, the picturesque environment is not polluted by smoke, noise and odours from the production process, thanks to the BRÜCKNER ECO-AIR exhaust air cleaning system.
