Seismic Unveils First Collection Of Powered Clothing™

SAN FRANCISCO — September 6, 2018 — Seismic, an apparel company creating clothes that improve quality of life through quality of motion, today unveiled its Spring 2019 Collection on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt, which is the world’s largest technology startup conference. Seismic’s Powered Clothing™ fuses discreet robotics with textiles to create products that look and feel like apparel, but function more like an extension of the human body — an extra set of muscles people can put on every day.

Fresh off the acquisition of Lumo Bodytech’s intellectual property, CEO and Co-founder Rich Mahoney showcased the Seismic Spring ’19 Collection by introducing models wearing bespoke Seismic suits in a refined palette with bright accents. The demonstration highlighted how Seismic suits support the body’s core by providing up to 30 watts of power to each hip and the lower back to support sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, and a range of other activities.

Seismic will enter the consumer market with a limited release in 2019. The company plans to focus on the activewear market, which rang up $97 billion in U.S. sales in 2015 according to Morgan Stanley.

“If you wear clothes, you are a potential customer of Seismic,” Mahoney said. “We see a future where simply getting dressed in the morning can dramatically improve people’s lifestyles and expand what they are capable of accomplishing. Today we unveiled a product prototype, and our technology will continue to become lighter and smaller and more powerful, with the suit’s intelligence uniquely optimizing the wearer’s experience, learning and adapting with every use.”

Seismic’s Powered Clothing consists of three distinct layers: base layer, strength layer, and intelligent layer:

  • The base layer is the apparel itself, which is designed to be worn primarily as an undergarment or can be worn as activewear on its own.
    • Seismic’s designers looked to the sports performance world to create a premium-quality suit that is cool, dry and comfortable to wear.
    • The base layer contains interior pockets that hold the removable hardware and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
    • It is constructed from a combination of stretch knit and woven fabrics that follow the contours of the body and provide structure where needed.
  • The strength layer contains the robotic components – located on the outer leg, extending up to the hip area, and including the lower back – that replicate the functionality of muscles, tendons and ligaments.
    • Seismic’s robotic “muscles” contract and relax, just as the body’s muscles do, to assist the wearer’s motion, such as standing up from a seated position.
    • If the wearer is in a prolonged standing position, the muscles co-contract around the hip to promote stability and proper posture.
    • This layer also includes sensors that track body orientation, as well as the force applied by each robotic muscle.
  • The intelligent layer is contained within an external pack, worn on the lower back, that is akin to the suit’s brain and borrows from mobile and IoT technology. Key components include:
    • Onboard computer with memory that gathers data from sensors throughout the suit.
    • Wireless connectivity (WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE) to access suit settings.
    • Fully programmable suit controls that provide a user experience called “Symbiosis.” With Symbiosis, the suit listens to the wearer’s movements and automatically provides support at just the right time; no other commands from the user are necessary.

“Creating impactful robotic products is my passion,” Mahoney said. “The impetus for starting Seismic was when I realized a very simple truism: no one wears robotics, everyone wears clothing. That is why we are an apparel company first and foremost. The more we fit into people’s lifestyles, the more they will use the technology.

“I’m happy to report that our beta users love the suit and show us new use cases all the time. They are playing tennis while wearing it, going hiking, even wearing it to concerts where they’ll be seated for long periods of time. This is clothing that should exist, and now it does.”

Huntsman Textile Effects Redefines Dyeing Of Polyester Including Microfiber And Blends With UNIVADINE® E3-3D Diffusion Accelerant

SINGAPORE — September 7, 2018 — Huntsman Textile Effects introduces UNIVADINE® E3-3D next-generation diffusion accelerant to help mills achieve high-performance dyeing of polyester, microfibers and blends in an environment-friendly way that complies with current and anticipated industry sustainability standards.

The demand for polyester and man-made fibers is booming as sports and athleisure apparel markets expand rapidly around the world. At the same time, big-name brands that set trends in the sector continue to increase  focus on sustainability and performance. As such, this is putting pressure on mills since the current industry standard involves chemically active diffusion accelerants that contain unwanted chemicals and require additional leveling agents and anti-foaming products that may be hazardous to people and the environment.

Developed by Huntsman Textile Effects specifically to meet these challenges, Univadine E3-3D diffusion accelerant is low-odor, free of benzyl benzoate and other hazardous substances. Part of Huntsman’s range of innovative dyEvolution™ dyeing auxiliaries, it uses Huntsman’s Active Diffusion Technology to enable high-speed dyeing with best-in-class leveling, retarding and migration properties.

“Univadine E3-3D diffusion accelerant delivers across three key dimensions — diffusion, leveling and migration — for exceptional performance and environmental and economic sustainability. Its environmental credentials offer mills greater processing flexibility and an optimum price-performance ratio,” said Kerim Oner, global marketing manager for Dyeing Auxiliaries at Huntsman Textile Effects. “We expect this latest offering to change the way that the industry dyes polyester and blends while meeting stringent environmental standards.”

Univadine E3-3D diffusion accelerant has a high affinity to polyester, causing the fiber to swell and increasing the diffusion of the disperse dye, even at lower temperatures. Multiple leveling mechanisms then slow down the exhaustion rate to ensure safe, defect-free dyeing. Finally, as the dye bath heats up, the product’s strong support for disperse dye migration ensures the dye molecules are evenly absorbed.

As a result of this cutting-edge diffusion technology, UNIVADINE® E3-3D diffusion accelerant can be used to successfully dye polyester fibers in tightly wound or high-density yarn/beam dyeing and is suitable for jet applications without the need for anti-foaming products. Reducing exposure to high heat, its Active Diffusion Technology minimizes the potential to damage the elastane in polyester-elastane blends and provides for on-tone dyeing of microfibers. The superior migration support of UNIVADINE® E3-3D diffusion accelerant also increases reproducibility, allowing mills to dispense with additional leveling agents.

Polyester, microfibers and blends treated with UNIVADINE® E3-3D diffusion accelerant comply with the requirements of bluesign®, in addition to being suitable for Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® and an approved input dyeing auxiliary chemical for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified textile products*.

Internet Of Medical Things Spurs Home Healthcare Industry Growth Through Enabling Wearables And e-Skin Devices

SANTA CLARA, Calif.  — September 7, 2018 — The perceptible shift from reactive healthcare to proactive patient care is a direct result of the technological advances in sensor technologies and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). Intelligent sensors are hastening the creation of a fully connected ecosystem, opening up the possibility of remote or home healthcare becoming a mainstream healthcare model. Devices such as wearables or e-skin sensors, which aid chronic disease management, and further improvements in the size, sensitivity, selectivity, and communications capability of sensors are giving a huge boost to real-time remote monitoring. This escalating demand for remote patient monitoring, along with the introduction of advanced smartphones, mobile applications, fitness devices, and advanced hospital infrastructure, are setting the stage for establishing smart hospitals all over the world.

Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Internet of Medical Things Enabling Hospitals of the Future, explains the significance of IoMT in the healthcare sector by presenting key technology trends and enabling technologies, as well as analyzing the major factors influencing technology development and adoption. It presents the profiles of key stakeholders, business models, and important innovations, as well as examines growth opportunities based on patent scenario and market potential.

“Sensors, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, and blockchain are vital technologies for IoMT as they provide multiple benefits to patients and facilities alike,” said Varun Babu, Senior Research Analyst, TechVision. “For instance, they help with the delivery of targeted and personalized medicine while simultaneously ensuring seamless communication and high productivity within smart hospitals.” Precision medicine made possible through IoMT offers caregivers opportunities to develop unique therapies tailored to the medical needs and attributes of each individual. Moreover, as IoMT-based medical systems are built on a feedback loop, the system automatically repeats feedback for better patient results.

Several technologies will have important roles to play in enabling smart hospitals. Some of these include:

  • Big Data analytics: By using analytics to gain actionable insights, smart hospitals can employ digital prescriptive maintenance (DPM) of medical equipment. Big Data analytics can analyze electronic health records (EHRs) and hospital networks, control data for public health research, and reduce hospital readmissions.
  • Blockchain: Users of blockchain solutions can create modern models for managing and sharing medical records and patient health patterns within specified populations/communities. A blockchain network will bring together insurance companies, hospitals, and patients for hassle-free and well-integrated payments.
  • AI: This technology collects the massive amounts of data generated by IoT to make inferences and predict medical diagnostics based on complex analysis algorithms. With the combination of IoT (for periodic control) and AI (for analysis process), connected healthcare monitoring devices will become “intelligent” over time.

“The main objective of IoMT is to eliminate unnecessary information within the medical system so that doctors can focus on diagnoses and treatment,” noted Varun Babu. “Since it is an emerging technology, technology developers need to offer standardized testing protocols so that they can convince hospitals of their safety and efficacy and make the most of their massive potential.”

Internet of Medical Things Enabling Hospitals of the Future is part of Frost & Sullivan’s global Sensors and Instrumentation Growth Partnership Service program.

Iconix Launches Direct To Consumer Ocean Pacific Website

NEW YORK CITY — September 5, 2018 — Iconix Brand Group Inc. announces that Ocean Pacific, the heritage brand with over 46 years of history, is re-issuing its classics with the launch of its new website. Inspired by the brand’s origins in surf and skate, the vintage-inspired collection is built for those who live “the stoke way:” freely, actively and enthusiastically.

The heritage collection consists of pieces for men and women, pulled from the Ocean Pacific archives. The Ocean Pacific website launch introduces its classics to a new generation of consumers. With a rich history emerging from the West Coast and a foundation built on the belief that the life and culture of the surfer can be captured on the canvas that is a T-shirt, Ocean Pacific is going back to its roots with its graphic tees, corduroy shorts, bold colors and timeless fits.

It all began in 1972 when Jim Jenks decided to create clothing that met the demands for surfers in and out of the water. It was then that Ocean Pacific, which was previously a surfboard brand, became the first company to translate the West Coast culture into a lifestyle brand. Ocean Pacific quickly dominated not only the West Coast surf scene, but also the worldwide market with pieces like its famous corduroy shorts that became a wardrobe staple for surfers and non-surfers alike. The cult classics that Ocean Pacific created resonated with men and women of all ages, igniting a passion for casual-yet-unique styles that could be worn on and off the beach. The colorful, sunshine-ready clothes fused fashion, sports, music and beach culture, sparking an evolution and redefining bold, personal style.

The launch of Ocean Pacific’s new website is intended to connect with both nostalgic, loyal fans of the brand as well as new consumers. In today’s fashion landscape where “retro” brand favorites are rapidly re-emerging in the marketplace, Ocean Pacific offers a unique point of view with its legacy rooted in California surf culture and 1970s street style.

Key pieces include long and short-sleeve polos as well as shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts and vests, all unmistakably characterized by the Ocean Pacific retro flare with details such as bold colored stripes and vintage surf-inspired graphics.

The collection is positioned at accessible price points with pieces ranging from $32-64. The line is available at OceanPacific.com, retailers including Tilly’s, and independent surf shops across the country.
