African Promise Meets Swiss Innovation

ZURICH — March 16, 2020 — Swiss textile machinery companies made a major impact at the inaugural ITME Africa trade show, with 12 member companies from Swissmem (the Swiss Textile Machinery Association) presenting their latest technologies. The event, staged in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa from February 14-16, featured more than 170 exhibitors from 15 countries. It was organized by India ITME Society, as an extension of its existing trade shows in India.

Post-show reports from the Swissmem companies indicated a high level of satisfaction with the organization — and the positive impression made by the attractive design of the Swiss Pavilion. The business prospects were also said to be upbeat, with Ethiopia and neighboring East African countries increasingly viewed as fertile ground for technological and commercial developments in textile production. The region is widely viewed as an emerging option for global apparel sourcing.

Machinery and know-how from Switzerland offers the innovative and quality-focused boost that these markets could utilize to raise their competitiveness and broaden their appeal to international customers, according to Cornelia Buchwalder, secretary general of the Swiss Textile Machinery Association: “Our member firms together have more than 4,000 years of cumulative experience, covering the entire textile value chain,” she said. “That means we have the power and the technological expertise to help textile manufacturers in these markets take the next step in their development.”

There were suggestions that attendance at the exhibition was affected somewhat by travel restrictions and uncertainty related to the corona virus outbreak, but reactions from the Swiss participants also included comments such as “promising”, “potential” and “exciting,”  while some mentioned new sales leads and even concrete proposals.

The Swissmem exhibitors were: Amsler Tex, Benninger, Jakob Müller, Hunziker, Grob, Loepfe, Rieter, Bräcker, Graf, SSM, Saurer and Steiger Participations.

Feedback from the Embroidery Business Unit of Saurer Technologies was enthusiastic, according to general manager Efthimios Katsidis: “The Swissmem stand was clearly the most beautiful at the exhibition, and this was mentioned repeatedly by all visitors with admiration. Many thanks to Swissmem for the great organization. During the three days of the fair, we were able to conduct many exciting discussions with customers, which indicates that the East African market has much promising potential. We are already looking forward to our next participation.”

Rieter’s sales chief for this Asia-Africa region, Gerald Steiner, also praised the Swiss Pavilion design and open-booth layout, as well as the visitor response: “We had good discussions with existing and potential customers and could generate new leads, “ he said. “Besides Ethiopia, East African and South African countries were also represented by visitors, while students from various textile universities were present to be updated about the latest innovations in the industry. On the whole, ITME Africa 2020 was a very satisfying event.”

Steiger Participations, the Swiss manufacturer of flat knitting machines, attended ITME Africa to introduce its own products and represent its shareholder Ningbo Cixing Co. Ltd. China. Steiger sales and marketing executive Carlo Corradi said: “The market of Ethiopia, with a population of more than 100 million, is considered to have good potential for the mid to long term. Various foreign textile manufacturers have already installed production units in Ethiopia, with the attraction of low production costs.”

“Taking into account that it was the first international textile machinery exhibition in Ethiopia and in Africa, the quality of the various meetings with customers from Ethiopia and other East African countries was considered as very good and promising for the future. Some concrete projects are already under discussion.”

“Steiger Participations will follow up the various contacts made at this exhibition as a ‘landmark’ in the promising new markets of Ethiopia and East Africa in general. Participation at this exhibition in Africa is an investment for the future.”

The yarn processing and winding technology specialist SSM (Schärer Schweiter Mettler) also reported a positive experience at the show. Area sales manager Robin Gutbrod said: “SSM was very glad to have exhibited at the ITME Africa 2020. The well-organized exhibition was an excellent opportunity to meet customers from Ethiopia and surrounding countries, enabling SSM to better understand the requirements of customers in the growing East African market.”

Aurora Specialty Textiles Group Wins Award For Operational Excellence

YORKVILLE, Ill. — March 17, 2020 — Aurora Specialty Textiles Group has won an award for outstanding business practices. This one is for Operational Excellence and is from the Valley Industrial Association (VIA), which represents the manufacturing industry in the Fox Valley region of Illinois, a large industrial area near Chicago and one of the larger manufacturing regions in the US Midwest.

The VIA’s Excellence in Operations Award recognizes leadership in operational strategic planning and implementation.

The announcement that Aurora won this award was made March 11 at the annual VIA Spark Award Benchmarking for Excellence dinner. Awards were given out for Culture, Innovation, Operational Excellence, Safety, Social Responsibility and Workforce Development.

Aurora was a finalist for two of the Spark Award categories — Social Responsibility and Operational Excellence. The awards process included a detailed submission and a lengthy interview that emphasized Aurora’s continuous operational improvements. This includes utilization of Kaizen Events and Green Belt projects, two of the key performance indicators used to measure operations effectiveness, as well as cross-training, on-board training for operators and benchmarking with other plants.

“It was an honor to be nominated as a finalist in two categories from the VIA Spark Award committee, which recognized us for Social Responsibility and Operational Excellence,” said Marcia Ayala, president of Aurora. “And to have won for Operational Excellence means so much.

“In 2015, we moved our operations from a 132 year-old plant in Aurora, Illinois, to our new facility in Yorkville and it was a challenge,” she added. “Many improvements and adjustments had to be made in all aspects of our operations and moving took extensive cooperation, patience and know-how from our employees and management to make it successful. I’m always proud to give a tour of our new plant in Yorkville and show the facility to customers and partners. I’m equally proud to have our team and organization recognized for Operational Excellence.”

In 2019 Aurora was recognized by the Sign Graphics Industry Association (SGIA) with their Sustainable Business Recognition award for excellence in implementing sustainability practices throughout their Yorkville plant. In 2019, Aurora was also recognized for its sustainability programs by the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce, which designated Aurora as a Green Connect business. In February of this year (2020), Aurora was the recipient of the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce annual Green Business of the Year award. The recent award from the VIA is the third for Aurora in less than a year.

Kathy Gilmore, president of the VIA, explained why Aurora was selected for the Spark Award for Operational Excellence.

“This year the interviewers were looking for companies that have a systems approach to the best practices in the categories of the Spark Awards,” said Gilmore. “The thinking is that having the right operation systems and disciplines in place is what helps take a company from good to great. And even though Aurora Specialty Textiles isn’t a large company with resources to easily implement these systems, they have made it a priority and invested the time and resources into this. They are an impressive group.”

Berry Global Produces Materials Critical For Coronavirus Defense; Expands Wipes Capacity

Nonwoven rolls, bound for applications such as face masks and disinfecting wipes, at a Berry Global facility.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — March 10, 2020 — Berry Global Group Inc. highlights its involvement in the fight against coronavirus. As the world leader for nonwovens manufacturing, Berry is supplying leading healthcare and consumer brand companies around the world to create products in high demand to fight spread of the coronavirus.

In its January 31 announcement, Berry reported the prioritization of healthcare production in its Chinese facilities in response to the increased demand for coronavirus prevention. Concurrently, the company has responded to this increased demand across North America and Europe. In the United States, Berry has shifted capacity to supply maximum output in response to increased demand for healthcare materials; these include materials for hard surface disinfectant wipes and face masks. In Europe, the company’s meltblown lines are running around the clock to produce materials for face masks and other healthcare applications, such as materials used in blood filtration.

Berry’s position in the supply chain for these healthcare materials is of critical importance. The company manufactures nonwoven fabrics, which are then sold to converters who produce infection prevention items such as face masks, N95 respirators, and protective apparel.

“We are proud to be a part of this fight,” said Tom Salmon, Berry chairman and CEO. “Many don’t realize the role plastics play in protecting us from infection and the spread of disease, when in fact, they are a critical component. Our leadership position and global scale allow us to create increased supply when encountering a pandemic such as this.”

In addition to its already vast nonwovens supply network, Berry announces today the commercialization of its new Spinlace® production line in Mooresville, N.C. A $50 million investment, the asset is running at full production rates, providing an incremental 17,000 metric tons of annual capacity to the marketplace. The Spinlace asset is focused on various wipes applications serving the healthcare, hygiene, household cleaning, foodservice, and industrial markets. This further secures Berry’s leadership position in the manufacturing of hard surface disinfectant wipes.

“We are very excited to begin commercial shipments from our third proprietary Spinlace asset in the United States. The technology provides customers with the ability to design customized products imparting flexibility in strength, image or branding, functionality, raw materials selection and much more,” said Mark Siebert, executive vice president and general manager of Berry’s Health and Specialties, United States and Canada.

In addition to its nonwoven capabilities, Berry also provides packaging for a number of in-demand items, such as disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and soaps.

Mannington Mills to Expand, Create 268 Jobs in Gordon Co., Georgia

ATLANTA — February 26, 2020 — Governor Brian P. Kemp today announced a $22 million expansion by flooring manufacturer Mannington Mills Inc. in Gordon County because of increased customer demand for domestically produced luxury vinyl flooring. Mannington Mills purchased a 10.5-acre site in Calhoun that will expand upon the company’s manufacturing presence in the state and create 268 jobs.

“This expansion is more great news for Northwest Georgia and a testament to existing industries in our state receiving a major return on their investments,” said Governor Kemp. “I appreciate Mannington’s continued dedication to the hardworking Georgians in our skilled workforce in the area and congratulate the community on this exciting announcement.”

Mannington Mills is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of residential and commercial flooring with operations across the United States as well as in the United Kingdom. Georgia has been home to three Mannington Mills facilities for 53 years, and this is the third expansion in two years at the Calhoun facility.

“Acquisition of this site is part of Mannington’s long-term growth investment plan for the Northwest Georgia area, and we were pleased to once again work with the Georgia Department of Economic Development on the project,” said Russell Grizzle, president and CEO of Mannington Mills. “Mannington continues to experience high demand for the flooring products we make in Georgia, and this will help us accommodate and capitalize further on that demand.”

In 2019, Georgia was the number one exporter among U.S. states for floor covering products with a total export value of $485.4 million, and Northwest Georgia hosts the bulk of the state’s floor covering industries. The State of Georgia’s newest strategic logistics asset — the nearby Appalachian Regional Port — plays a key role in Georgia’s supply chain network.

“Mannington continues to experience strong growth in Calhoun and Gordon County, Georgia,” said Larry Roye, chairman of the joint Gordon County Development Authority. “We appreciate Mannington’s ongoing long-term growth and investment plan for our community.”

“Mannington is a major partner in the growth and innovation within the floor covering industry, and we applaud the additional product line and building expansion,” said Kathy Johnson, president and CEO of the Gordon County Chamber and Development Authority.

Georgia Department of Economic Development Project Manager Taylor Kielty represented the Global Commerce Division on this project in partnership with the Development Authority of Gordon County, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and North Georgia EMC.

“We are always excited to help our Georgia companies grow and reach new markets, and we congratulate Mannington Mills on their continued success in Gordon County,” said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. “Mannington has been a great partner in Northwest Georgia, and the Georgia Department of Economic Development is proud to continue working hand-in-hand with our existing industries to help increase productivity and find new paths to success.”

PPSS Group Launch Cut-Tex PRO Cut Resistant Fabric In Black Color

PPSS Group’s CEO showcasing first production sample of his firm’s black Cut-Tex PRO cut resistant fabric

WETHERBY, England — March 17, 2020 — Following several years of extensive research and development, England-based PPSS Group have today launched a highly anticipated black version of their high performance cut resistant fabric Cut-Tex PRO.

Robert Kaiser, CEO of PPSS Group said: “Cut-Tex PRO is a thoroughly field-tested cut resistant fabric, used to manufacture potentially lifesaving slash and cut resistant clothing for law enforcement and other homeland security professionals.”

“The most common question we have faced over the past years is: Can you also produce it in a much darker color? From today onwards we can now answer this question with: Yes, we can!”

Frontline professionals dealing with potentially aggressive, hostile or intoxicated members of the public are at risk of being attacked with edged weapon, knives, razor blades and broken glass.

Cut-Tex PRO enables uniform, workwear and tactical apparel manufacturers to incorporate a dependable and ultra-durable cut resistant fabric into their garment designs to help protect their clients and customers.

Protecting especially key arteries and blood vessels means effectively preventing lacerations, cuts and subsequent rapid blood loss, shock and ultimately loss of valuable life.

Cut-Tex PRO is a knitted cut resistant fabric, not much thicker than a normal T-Shirt and very soft to touch.

At pH 6.6, Cut-Tex PRO has a pH value similar to that of water. This makes it an extremely low risk skin irritation fabric.

It offers EN 388:2016 cut resistance level E and level 5 based on the previous EN 388:2003 standard. It has also been tested and certified to ANSI/ISEA 2016 cut resistance level A5.

Cut-Tex PRO is available in individual rolls. Each roll is 25m long and 80cm wide. When cut open the fabric is 1.6m wide.

The MOQ for the black version is 12 rolls, equalling 1 standard pallet.

The fabric is only available for purchase directly from PPSS Group.

HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03 Antiviral Textile Technology Tested Effective Against Coronavirus

ZURICH — March 17, 2020 — HeiQ, winner of the Swiss Technology Award and Swiss Environmental Award, has launched HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03, an antiviral and antimicrobial textile treatment tested effective against coronavirus.

For 15 years, HeiQ has forged a solid innovation track record helping brands improve textile products. Catalyzed to action by the global fight against Coronavirus, HeiQ launched HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03 (Viroblock), an antiviral and antimicrobial textile treatment which has proven effective against human coronavirus (229E) in face mask testing, significantly enhancing the antiviral log reduction from 2.90 of untreated face masks to 4.48, over 99.99% reduction of virus infectivity. (Note: a log reduction of 2 is equivalent to 100 times the effectiveness).

“Virologist Dr. Thierry Pelet of HeiQ’s Scientific Advisory Board brought us a depth of knowledge and accelerated our efforts to address the urgent problem of a global pandemic,” said Carlo Centonze, HeiQ Group CEO. “Our goal is to prevent textiles from becoming a host surface for propagating harmful viruses and bacteria, and contribute to reduce the risk and speed of contamination and transmission.”

According to the World Health Organization, the incubation period for COVID-19 ranges from 1-14 days. Social distancing and wearing a mask are common measures that people in countries like South Korea and Taiwan take to avoid spreading the virus. Chinese protective masks producer Suzhou Bolisi is the lead adopter of Viroblock. Treated masks will be available as early as this April. Many international textile producers such as American legwear manufacturer Kayser-Roth and Lufeng from China are evaluating Viroblock on other types of textile products.

“I’m impressed by HeiQ’s ability to fast track such a complex innovation and bring this breakthrough to globally critical products in short time,” said Dr. Pelet.

Viroblock is a unique combination of vesicle and silver technologies designed to inhibit the growth and persistence of bacteria and viruses. The HeiQ vesicle technology targets lipid-enveloped viruses, such as coronavirus, providing rapid virus deactivation, while the HeiQ silver technology inhibits the replication of both bacteria and viruses. Viroblock can be applied to a wide spectrum of textile surfaces including face masks, air filters, medical gowns, curtains and more.

Viroblock demonstrates dramatically improved reduction of virus infectivity against Influenza types H1N1, H5N1, H7N9, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

Nonwoven Mats For Hydroponic Growing: Salad Days For The U.K.’s Anglo Recycling

WHITWORTH, England — March 17, 2020 — Anglo Recycling Technology is on course to deliver no less than a million of its special nonwoven mats for hydroponically growing herbs to a major customer in the Middle East this year.

The Growfelt-branded products arose from the discovery back in the late 1990s by Anglo Recycling’s owner Simon Macaulay, that the England-based retail supplier of salads, Van Heineken Brothers (now Vitacress), used nonwoven felts on which to grow its cress.

“I drove down to see the company’s production manager, Chris Moncrieff, and discovered they were indeed growing cress on felts, but they were made from virgin materials and he liked the idea of maybe using a blend of virgin fiber offcuts of cotton, wool and polypropylene,” he explains. “That’s how Growfelt was born. For the first six years we supplied exclusively to Vitacress and in return they helped us to bring our factory up to food grade standard and to set in place a testing regime for Salmonella E-Coli coliforms and listeria.”

In recent years, however, Anglo Recycling, has significantly broadened its customer base. It now offers a core of three growing media products to meet the differing needs of customers across Europe, the Middle East and the Far East, whether for retail presentation and appearance or for water holding.

“As we continue to expand our customer base, we are constantly being set new challenges,” said the company’s managing director Andy Hall. “A customer in the Philippines, for example, wanted a mat 10mm thick, since the ambient temperature in that region demands increased water availability for growing herbs. Our customer in the Middle East is meanwhile seeing the demand for fresh salads increasing significantly and is expanding so rapidly orders have grown from 360,000 pads for all of 2017 to this latest order at the start of 2020 for a million.”

“We’re also undertaking trials to find a fully biodegradable product that meets micro and growth challenges but also allows customers to reduce their landfill costs,” Macaulay added. “It’s not proving easy, but we’re sure we’ll solve it. There’s already a pretty convincing sustainable argument, with our Growfelt pads allowing herbs for salads to be grown and sourced locally, rather than being flown in from the other side of the world.”
