Innovative Silk Supplier And Textile Manufacturer BOMBYX Achieves GOTS, GRS And RCS Certifications At Its Garment Facility

NEW YORK CITY — February 8, 2021 — BOMBYX, a division of PFGHL, is proud to announce that it has completed the GOTS, GRS, and RCS certifications at its garment facility, Nanchong Ka Fung (NCKF) located in the Northeast of China’s Sichuan Province. These accreditations are in addition to the company’s existing bluesign®, IFOAM, LEED, and Think Green Initiative certifications and continue to propel BOMBYX towards achieving an organic and recycled, vertical supply chain. These acknowledgments are in addition to the previously achieved CERES organic cotton certification announced in November 2020.

Throughout the pandemic, BOMBYX has continued to demonstrate its commitment to its core mission of innovation to make enlightened, aspirational silk and to re-emerge stronger with more capabilities. The GOTS, GRS, and RCS certifications awarded signify the supplier’s progression towards completing Phase 2 of its journey to building a fully organic, owned & operated supply chain, which it plans to complete by 2023.

Founded in 2018, BOMBYX is an innovative silk supplier and textile manufacturer, creating environmentally conscious textiles through sustainable and responsible practices. The new certifications mark an important benchmark in BOMBYX’s evolution as it progresses through Phase 2 of its vertical operation journey with the successful inclusion of organic and recycled materials. The new certifications come on the coattails of its recent CERES organic certification at its mulberry farms where BOMBYX has been replacing chemical, GMO, and synthetic inputs with natural, organic substitutes by incorporating regenerative farming practices.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification version 5.0 affirms that BOMBYX’s entire manufacturing processes, including finishing, manufacturing, trading, and washing for women’s apparel utilizes a variety of machinery for eco-functionality based on the use of 100-percent organic silk. Textile production includes E-Flow washing machines by Jeanologia which reduces water consumption in garment washing by up to 95 percent; silk is dyed and washed with 100-percent recycled water and 100-percent renewable energy, and 3,194 panels of polycrystalline silicon solar panels create clean energy for the facility’s operations. The GOTS certification is an internationally recognized organic certification that includes ecological and social criteria, demonstrating to stakeholders, partners, and consumers BOMBYX’s commitment to providing sustainable, ethical, and high-quality products.

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification version 4.0 verifies that women’s apparel, specifically shirts and blouses, manufactured at BOMBYX’s garment facility are composed of 20-percent post-consumer recycled fibers. The Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) certification version 2.0 further verifies categories of women’s apparel including dresses and skirts, which are comprised of 5-percent pre-consumer recycled content. RCS and GRS are international, voluntary standards that set requirements for third-party certification of recycled input and additional criteria for social and environmental processing requirements and chemical restrictions. The components for GRS and RCS are collected from certified recycled materials and demonstrate BOMBYX’s commitment to traceability as well as a circular economy by reducing textile waste and keeping the integrity of the fibers by reincorporating them into high-quality garments.

“While certifications and accreditations will never fully define or represent Bombyx’s mission toward sustainability, they represent various operational aspects and opportunities that deserve our constant attention as we move toward this goal” says Hilmond Hui, vice president of BOMBYX. “By achieving, maintaining and exceeding these respected certifications, we are providing globally recognized tools that we, and our brand partners, can use in consumer education and communications. These tools encourage more holistic understanding of the processes and the standards across our company’s value system. At Bombyx, trust and transparency sit at the core of our business and allows our aspirational silk to represent a new thinking in luxury,” Hui continued. “At Bombyx that value system takes all stakeholders — garment workers, farmers, brand partners, consumers and the land itself — into consideration, aiming to improve our positive impact through constant R&D and innovation”.

NRF: Retail Imports Expected To Hit Repeated Monthly Records After Record Year In 2020

WASHINGTON — February 8, 2021 — Following a record year during 2020, imports at the nation’s largest retail container ports are expected to set new monthly records from now into the summer as the nation’s economy continues to recover from the pandemic, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“The import numbers we’re seeing reflect retailers’ expectations for consumer demand to the point that many factories in Asia that normally close for Chinese New Year this month are remaining open to keep up,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “Regardless of whether it’s in-store or on retailers’ websites, the record holiday season and numbers for 2020 show consumers are buying again and have been for a while. This surge has been going on for months, and retailers are importing merchandise faster than ever.”

Retail sales during the November-December holiday season in 2020 hit a record $789.4 billion, up 8.3 percent from 2019, and preliminary figures show retail sales for all of 2020 were up 6.8 percent year-over-year.

“As we continue to struggle with COVID-19 and the ups and downs in the economy, year-over-year increases in the flow of containerized goods have become dramatic,” Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett said. “It is impressive that the cargo volumes handled by the ports remain as high as they are despite congestion at the docks and the spread of the coronavirus among workers throughout the supply chain.”

U.S. ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 2.11 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units in December, the latest month for which final numbers are available. That was up 0.2 percent from November and up 22.3 percent year-over-year. A TEU is one 20-foot container or its equivalent.

That brought 2020 to a total of 22 million TEU, up 1.9 percent from 2019’s 21.6 million TEU and beating the previous record of 21.8 million TEU recorded in 2018.

January results aren’t available yet but the month was projected at 2.08 million TEU, which would be up 14.6 percent over the same month last year and the busiest January since NRF began tracking imports in 2002, topping 1.89 million TEU in January 2019.

February is historically the slowest month of the year for imports, both because of the lull between the holiday season and spring and because factories in Asia close for the Chinese New Year holiday. But with 25-30 ships waiting to dock at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach because of congestion at the terminals from reported equipment and labor shortages and with many Asian factories remaining open during the holiday to meet demand, this February is forecast at 1.91 million TEU, up 26.3 percent year-over-year. March is forecast at 1.93 million TEU, up an unprecedented 41 percent from March 2020, when factories in China failed to reopen because of the coronavirus. April is forecast at 1.82 million TEU, up 13.3 percent year-over-year; May at 1.9 million TEU, up 23.8 percent, and June also at 1.9 million TEU, up 18.2 percent.

Each month from January through June would be a record for the month, and the first half of 2021 is forecast at 11.5 million TEU, up 22.1 percent from the same period in 2020, which experienced a major decline in imports due to the impact of COVID-19.

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by the consulting firm Hackett Associates, provides historical data and forecasts for the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Port of Virginia, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades, Miami and Jacksonville on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast. The report is free to NRF retail members, and subscription information is available at NRF.com/PortTracker .

Dyeing Industry First For 7H With The First Industrial Scale imogo Dye-Max Spray Dyeing Line

The imogo team (left to right): Per Stenflo, textile process specialist Ellinor Niit and CEO Joacim Wellander.

LIMHAMN, Sweden — February 8, 2021 — Swedish commission dyeing company 7H Färgeri is looking to propel itself to the forefront of sustainable fabric production with the installation of the first industrial scale imogo Dye-Max spray dyeing line.

Currently under construction, the line will be delivered in the first week of March to the 7H plant close to the Swedish city of Borås. It will have a full working width of 1.8 meters with an operating speed of up to 50 meters for the reactive dyeing of cellulosic fiber-based fabrics. In addition, it will be capable of carrying out the application of a wide range of fabric pre-treatments and finishing processes, providing the company with unbeatable flexibility in production.

A proven Mini-Max laboratory unit for predetermining application volumes and color matching will also be delivered as part of the contract.

With the potential to slash the use of fresh water, wastewater, energy and chemicals by as much as 90 percent compared to conventional jet dyeing systems, the DyeMax has gained considerable attention since the concept was outlined and a prototype machine constructed in 2019.

Pilot scale trials have subsequently been carried out with many well-known international textile companies and their brand partners.

The application unit of the Dye-Max consists of a closed chamber containing a series of spray cassettes with precision nozzles for accurate and consistent coverage, in combination with the patented imogo Pro Speed valve that controls the volume to be applied.

Control and precision

“We are achieving an extremely low liquor ratio of around 0.5-1 liters per kilo of fabric and we fully control the pickup, applying precisely what is required to the specific fabric,” said imogo founding partner Per Stenflo. “Compared to traditional padders there is no contamination of the dyebath or dilution of the dye liquor to worry about.

Fast changeovers with virtually no waste together with a high production speed enable a high productivity and unmatched production flexibility. The system is also equipped with an exhaust system and droplet separator to ensure that the environment around the unit is safe and free from particles.

The imogo Mini-Max meanwhile frees up valuable production time by avoiding wasteful pre-runs. The user simply sets the recipe with the Mini-Max and transfers the parameters to the Dye-Max recipe database for the system to be fully production ready.

7H Färgeri was founded in 1935 and has established itself as the Nordic region’s most complete dyeing and processing plant, specializing in technical and functional textiles for the automotive and soft furnishings sectors, as well as functional and protective clothing.

The family-owned business is now run by brothers Johan and Peter Engelmann.

“We are pleased to be pioneering a sustainable first for the dyeing industry,” said Johan Engelmann. “Our goal is to offer the market products and services with the highest quality in the most climate-smart and sustainable way, and imogo’s spray technology will give us the opportunity to offer innovative new services and products to both existing and new customers. It will be a very exciting journey.”

World Congress on Textile Coating

On February 12, Per Stenflo will make a presentation entitled “Transforming Textile Dyeing” during the online World Congress on Textile Coating which is held over four days, between February 11 and 19.
