MAS Holdings Ocean Strainer Named Finalist In Water Category Of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — May 3, 2022 — The winners of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards were announced today, honoring clean technology, innovative corporate initiatives, brave new designs for cities and buildings, and other creative works that are supporting the growth of positive social innovation, tackling social inequality, climate change, and public health crises.

MAS Holdings Ocean Strainer was named a finalist in the Water category as a part of the 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards. The ‘Ocean Strainer’ is a pilot floating trash trap installed in the Dehiwala canal in Colombo, Sri Lanka and has expanded to eight other locations through open-source partnerships across the country since its inception in August 2020. Research showed that rivers and canals are the source of 80 percent of plastic that reaches the ocean. Therefore, the team at MAS Holdings needed to address the marine plastic issue at the source, by trapping and removing the waste before it reaches the ocean. The result was the Ocean Strainer, a barrier made from a buoyant foam and canvas that floats across the length of the canal and traps plastic waste before reaching the ocean through the canal mouth. The waste is collected daily by an appointed resource person from the community along the canal, and project partners, Clean Ocean Force and the local Provincial Council support the collection and disposal of garbage. With 100 km of canal network in Sri Lanka, canals provided an opportunity to develop an innovative yet simple solution that could be low cost — approximately $6,000 — and easily replicated across locations to create greater impact.

Now in its sixth year, the World Changing Ideas Awards showcase 39 winners, 350 finalists, and more than 600 honorable mentions — with climate, social justice, and AI and data among the most popular categories. A panel of eminent Fast Company editors and reporters selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 2,997 entries across transportation, education, food, politics, technology, health, social justice, and more. In addition, several new categories have been added this year including climate, nature, water, and workplace. The 2022 awards feature entries from across the globe, from Switzerland to Hong Kong to Australia.

Fast Company’s Summer 2022 issue will showcase some of the world’s most inventive entrepreneurs and companies tackling global challenges. The issues highlight, among others, probiotics for coral reefs, easy-to-assemble kit homes for refugees or disaster survivors, a 3D printed vaccine patch, an electric truck, a system to heat homes from the waste heat of a name-brand factory, and prosecutor-initiated resentencing for overly long prison sentences.

“We are thrilled to have the MAS Ocean Strainer be recognized as one of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas. Coming from an island nation where the beaches have been our childhood playground, all of us at MAS feel very strongly about our responsibility to address the issue of marine plastic pollution,” said Sid Amalean, head of Sustainable Business at MAS Holdings. “Our team has worked for a number of years with amazing partners who have helped us come up with an affordable, scalable solution, which we are proud to share with anyone who wants to replicate this in any part of the world. We are strong believers of collaborative value creation and are now looking at creating recycled polyester from the plastic waste that we collect through the Ocean Strainers, to use in upcoming collections for our customers.”

“We are consistently inspired by the novelty and creativity that people are applying to solve some of our society’s most pressing problems, from shelter to the climate crisis. Fast Company relishes its role in amplifying important, innovative work to address big challenges,” said David Lidsky, interim editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Our journalists have identified some of the most ingenious initiatives to launch since the start of 2021, which we hope will both have a meaningful impact and lead others to join in being part of the solution.”

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories Strengthens Q2 Spider Silk Production Expansion With New Vendor Quality Assurance Program

ANN ARBOR, Mich.  — May 3, 2022 — Kraig Biocraft Laboratories Inc., the biotechnology company focused on the development and commercialization of spider silk, announces that it has strengthened its second-quarter production expansion with a new vendor quality assurance program. This new program will allow the company to screen numerous mulberry suppliers and grow its database of trusted vendors.

This new vendor verification program was put in place to address the company’s growing demand for high-quality mulberry as a feedstock for its expanding production of recombinant spider silk. As the primary raw input for the company’s spider silk production, growing its supply base of verified mulberry producers is a crucial component for the continued production expansion.

Equipment and processes refined in the first quarter have positioned the company to focus nearly all of this quarter’s operations on finished yarn production. Some 85 percent of all silkworms produced this month are slated for spinning and use in finished fabrics and garments. These materials will be dedicated to the company’s joint venture apparel brand, Spydasilk™. The remaining 15 percent of production will be devoted to the company’s regenerative breeding program and growing the production base for the third quarter and beyond.

The relationship between nutrition and high-quality silk production cannot be overstated. Nutritional management is one the most important factors in maintaining optimal colony productivity and wellbeing. This new vendor verification process will play an essential role as the company looks to the future and outgrowing its existing production footprint and supplier base.

“Prodigy Textiles is experiencing intensive growth,” said company COO Jon Rice. “Putting systems in place to ensure that we are able to sustain Dragon Silk’s record-setting performance levels is key to managing that growth and delivering cost-effective and eco-responsible spider silk. This new supplier verification process will give us the confidence to aggressively pursue the growth needed, by increasing feed efficiency and maintaining feed quality, to fulfill material demand for months and years to come.”

The Andritz needlepunch line will cover all process steps from fiber opening to automatic packaging of the product. The customer trusted once again in Andritz thanks to the success story of the first production line. Orwig Speltdoorn, head of the Nonwovens Division of the Sioen group, said: “Operating the Andritz line turned out to be a great success because of the excellent cooperation between our two companies. New Balance Joins Regenerative Agriculture Movement With Land To Market

BOSTON, Mass. — April 28, 2022 — New Balance today announced its membership in Land to Market, an outcomes-based verified sourcing solution for raw materials coming from verified regenerative land. Regenerative agriculture is a nature-based approach that goes far beyond sustainability to continuously improve the entire ecosystem — soil, water, air and animals.

“New Balance has a rich history of doing things differently,” said John Stokes, New Balance director of Global Sustainability. “We are constantly trying to find a better approach and, given the urgency of the climate crisis, collaboration is key. We believe our work is strengthened by like-minded alliances with experts who help extend our reach. Creating and sustaining a healthier planet requires collective effort all the way back through our supply chain, and we couldn’t be more excited for the work ahead with Land to Market.”

New Balance has a holistic approach to climate change with a focus on key areas where the brand can affect change. Polyester and leather are two of the largest drivers of climate impact for New Balance. As a first step toward lowering those impacts, the brand’s goal is to source 50-percent recycled polyester and 100-percent preferred leather by 2025. New Balance is working towards these goals with key collaborators that help enable actions and scale progress.

“We are constantly looking for ways to advance and expand our portfolio of environmentally preferred materials,” said Cynthia Maletz, New Balance director of Product Creation Platforms. “Our relationship with Land to Market will allow us to continually improve the sustainability credentials of our leather, a key priority material for New Balance.”

“Regenerative agriculture repairs the damage that humans have done to the Earth and makes things better,” said Chris Kerston, co-leader of Land to Market. “Without bold action from business, humanity will fail to reach critical climate goals. By joining Land to Market, New Balance has committed to being an action-leader, making impact on the climate crisis by restoring the land through regenerative agriculture.”

Land to Market works directly with farmers, ranchers and other raw material producers using Ecological Outcome Verification™ (EOV), the science inside of Land to Market, which measures land health and verifies whether farmland is in a state of regeneration or degeneration. EOV was developed by the nonprofit, Savory Institute, together with Michigan State University, Texas A&M, The Nature Conservancy and others.

As farmers and ranchers implement management that regenerates their land, EOV measures the environmental impact and provides feedback for continuous improvement. As more land is regenerated, more vegetation is grown and more carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere — helping to reduce rising carbon in the atmosphere. In this way, regenerative agriculture has a critical role to play in addressing climate change.

In 2023, New Balance will introduce a new product made with leather from verified regenerative ranches and is actively working on plans to scale its sourcing further across the supply chain. Products with the Land to Market verification seal contain materials sourced from farms and ranches showing positive environmental outcomes through EOV.
