YKK Develops AquaGuard® NATULON®, An Environmentally Friendly Water Repellent Zipper

TOKYO — October 13, 2022 — YKK Corp. has developed an environmentally friendly water repellent AquaGuard® NATULON® zipper. Beginning this month, YKK will spend about one year gradually replacing the conventional water repellent AquaGuard zipper with the environmentally friendly AquaGuard NATULON zipper, which has a tape made of recycled PET plastic.

The AquaGuard zipper has a polyurethane laminated water repellent tape and has been well received by customers for the 20 years since its launch in 2002. For the recently developed AquaGuard NATULON zippers, YKK not only adopted a green specification using recycled PET tape and a fluorine-free water repellent, but also improved the zipper’s opening/closing operability as well as the appearance of the zipper.

Key Points of the AquaGuard® NATULON® Zipper Development

(1) Switching to a green specification as an initiative toward achievement of the YKK Sustainability Vision 2050

YKK announced the YKK Sustainability Vision 2050, which is the Company’s sustainability goal for achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Goals were set up under five themes: climate change, material resources, water resources, chemical management, and respect of people. YKK is engaged in initiatives to achieve ten Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to these themes.

By using recycled PET for the tape, the AquaGuard® NATULON zipper contributes to resource utilization and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, switching the main material used in the water repellent finish (film) to one that is fluorine-free also leads to improvement of the manufacturing process environment. This move also meets the tightening of organic fluorine compound usage regulations in Europe and elsewhere.

(2) Improvement of zipper opening/closing operability

The AquaGuard zipper is being widely used in wear and gear for fields such as sports and hardcore outdoor activities, including mountain climbing. In such items as sportswear, there are many situations in which the wearer needs to open or close a zipper while moving or wearing gloves. For this reason, the zipper used needs to open and close smoothly. To ensure that AquaGuard NATULON zippers can be used in such fields without worry, YKK made improvements to the structure of zipper parts such as the chain and slider, improving the pin insertion and the sliding force when opening and closing the zipper.

WhiteCycle: DITF Is Part Of An International Consortium For Plastics Recycling

DENKENDORF, Germany — October 14, 2022 — A consortium of 16 public and private sector organizations under the name “WhiteCycle” has set itself the goal of establishing a comprehensive and closed-loop recycling system for plastic waste. German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) are part of this consortium and will make their contribution with a new synthesis process for processing recycled plastics.

Under the leadership of Michelin Group France, the consortium WhiteCycle was constituted at the beginning of July 2022. The aim of the European initiative is to establish an economic cycle to process inhomogeneous textile waste from different materials and to manufacture new, high-quality products from it. This project is intended to help achieve the targets set by the European Union for reducing CO2 emissions by 2030.

Complex, textile-containing PET waste such as tires, tubes or multilayer composite textiles from the clothing sector have so far been difficult or impossible to recycle. Under the WhiteCycle network, several projects and research approaches will be brought together to address the problem and provide new solutions.

The DITF will adapt an existing PET synthesis process to novel recycled monomers. The fundamental problem to be overcome is the impurities in the starting material due to its inhomogeneous composition. Together with the project partner Kordsa Teknik Textil A.S. (Turkey), the DITF are developing new synthesis concepts. Their aim is to eliminate possible disadvantages caused by residual contamination of the monomers. This is because, despite purification of the monomers prior to further processing, not all impurities can be removed. The approaches taken are demanding. For example, the type and quantity of additives used must be specifically adapted. These include catalysts, processing aids, nucleating and coupling agents, and chain extenders. In this way, it is possible to avoid the negative effects of unknown impurities. This improves the material properties of the recycled plastics, as they are thermally stabilized in the long term, which in turn results in improved mechanical and rheological properties. The modified process should enable recycled PET (r-PET) to have the same properties as commercial PET.

The consortium partners are pursuing other approaches to produce an improved recycling rate and higher-quality r-PET products: optimized sorting technologies for the sorting of waste are part of this, as is enzyme-based treatment of plastics to break them down into monomers in a sustainable way. Ultimately, the high-quality manufacture of new products from the recycled plastics will also help to close the raw material cycle.

Bally Ribbon Mills To Display High Performance 3-D Woven Composites At CAMX 2022

BALLY, Pa. — Ocotber 17, 2o22 — Bally Ribbon Mills (BRM) will showcase its high-quality, high-performance products at CAMX 2022, taking place October 17-20, 2022, in Anaheim, Calif. BRM experts will be on hand in booth V61 to discuss the company’s 3-D woven joints, thermal protection systems (TPS), and other 3-D structures.

BRM uses 3-D continuous weaving to create new joint structures and improve existing joints. Delivering the optimal blend of strength, durability, and structural integrity, BRM’s 3-D woven joints are available in “Pi – π,” double “T,” “H,” and other complex net shapes. 3-D woven joints from BRM lower weight and cost without sacrificing integrity and performance. Because of the nature of the 3-D weave, strength and support is translated in all 3 dimensions, thus enabling the join to reinforce the strength along the load paths of the sub-structures being joined together. These 3-D woven shapes for joining can be tailored to suit the architecture of the structure itself, as well as the sub-components being joined.

3-D woven composites by BRM are particularly successful in aviation heat shield applications such as thermal protection systems. These systems are mission-critical components, particularly in space exploration vehicles, and 3-D woven composites reduce weight and cost while maintaining excellent performance in TPS systems. The ability to vary yarn types, density, thickness, and width, as well as resin type, allows BRM to create fully customizable TPS to fit each specific mission or application’s needs.

Along with TPS systems, 3-D woven components also function well as engine parts in aircraft. Replacing traditional titanium engine components with 3-D woven carbon fiber composites serves to reduce weight and therefore lifetime cost, all while meeting the rigorous demands of manufacturing and use.

MSA Safety Names Lee McChesney Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

McChesney previously served as vice president, Corporate Finance and CFO for Stanley Black & Decker’s $12.8 billion operating unit, Global Tools and Storage.

McChesney joined The Stanley Works in 1999. Initially, he served in several finance and business leadership roles including business unit CFO, Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis Director and deploying the Stanley Fulfillment System. Over his career, McChesney has helped guide more than 40 acquisitions and integrations.  He also served as the finance integration leader for The Stanley Works and Black & Decker merger in 2010.

Following the merger, McChesney was named CFO for Global Tools & Storage, a business that more than doubled in size through the decade. In 2016, McChesney was named president, Hand Tools, Accessories and Storage, a $4 billion business that included the successful integration of Craftsman and Newell Tools. In 2019, McChesney was appointed CFO for Global Tools and Storage and Corporate FP&A, and in 2021 assumed additional responsibility for Corporate Tax and Treasury.

McChesney also helped launch one of Stanley Black & Decker’s largest innovation showcases for its Craftsman brand following its acquisition. The comprehensive program represented more than $500 million of incremental innovation at improved margin levels. “In addition to his operations and financial background, Lee understands the importance of innovation and how to best leverage it,” Vartanian said. “As we think about innovation at MSA, including our Connected Technology platforms and our recently launched MSA+ subscription service, I know Lee will bring to our team valuable insights on how we can best utilize those assets to drive greater value and market leadership.”

In his role with MSA, McChesney succeeds interim CFO Jonathan Buck, who will resume his responsibilities as chief accounting officer.

McChesney holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Connecticut. He also earned an MBA from the University of Massachusetts. In addition to his professional responsibilities, McChesney is actively involved with Junior Achievement of Central Maryland, serving on its board and as a member of its executive committee.  He also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Cabinet for the University of Connecticut School of Business.

Hyosung Introduces New Fall/Winter (FW) 23/24 Textile Trends At ISPO

SEOUL — October 18, 2022 — As a textile solutions provider Hyosung continually seeks to bring innovation across the value chain that exceed expectations. To bring value and creative solutions to its wide network of partners, Hyosung’s  Fashion Design Center (FDC), an interactive fashion studio, spans the U.S., Europe and Asia surveying progressive brands & retailers, and researching consumer insights. Hyosung FDC has released its forecasted Fall/Winter 23/24 Textile Trend report, which provides a vision of what major apparel brands will be incorporating into their collection next year.

FDC’s textile mega-trend for FW 23/24 is called Interconnected Future. This mega-trend is broken into four sub-trends and subsequent themes. Within each theme, the FDC team recommends a number of Hyosung’s multi-functional and sustainable yarns and apparel applications- most notably the company’s new 3rd party certified creora® bio-based spandex made with bio-based materials derived from industrial corn, along with its MIPAN regen ocean recycled nylon made from discarded fishing nets.

The Sport Smart sub-trend touches upon essential base layers, winter performance leisure hybrids, core fabrics using smart technology for in-home and IRL gyms, year-round water sports, and futuristic meta streetwear where physical and digital worlds collide through fantasy-inspired aesthetics.

Exploration of Outdoors sub-trend addresses the ongoing rise in the outdoorsy lifestyle trend. Key themes include textiles incorporating new levels of protection taking extreme weather patterns into consideration, comfy knit mid-layers in functional fabrics, textiles that can transition between winter recreation and all-day wear, and functional outerwear for urban nomads.

INDA Announces Date Changes For IDEA® In Miami Beach

CARY, N.C. — October 17, 2022 — INDA, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, announces new dates for the 22nd edition of IDEA® – The World’s Preeminent Event for Nonwovens & Engineered Fabrics. Originally scheduled to take place April 23-25, 2024, IDEA® now will be held April 29-May 1, 2025, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Fla.

In 2022, IDEA® attracted 5,000 participants from across the global supply chain to engage with nonwovens & engineered materials senior-level leaders at the Miami Beach Convention Center. IDEA® 2022 was co-located with the second FiltXPO™, North America’s only exhibition and conference dedicated exclusively to filtration and separation.
