New introductions at drupa include a range of compressible accessories (end plates, inner rings and notches). emtec Electronic Advances Textile Haptic Evaluation With Enhanced TSA Device At HIGHTEX 2024

LEIPZIG, Germany — May 27, 2024 — The emtec TSA Tactile Sensation Analyzer represents a significant advancement in haptic testing technology. Based on a measuring principle that simulates the human fingertips, the portable lab device evaluates the hand-feel of fabrics with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, measuring softness, smoothness, and stretch and recovery parameters within two minutes. Comparisons to results with traditional hand-panel testing methods using “touch experts” reveal a correlation of up to 100 percent. Allegiance Flag Supply Expands South Carolina Operations

COLUMBIA, S.C. — May 22, 2024 — Allegiance Flag Supply, a producer of American flags, today announced the expansion of its Charleston County operations. The company’s $6.3 million investment will create 84 new jobs.

Founded in Charleston in 2018, Allegiance Flag Supply produces high-quality, hand-sewn flags using locally sourced materials. The company makes over 1,000 American flags each day and distributes to customers in all 50 states.

Allegiance Flag Supply recently expanded into a new 24,000-square-foot building located at 7600 Southrail Road in North Charleston. The facility will house all of the company’s manufacturing and distribution operations.

EURATEX And industriAll Europe Team Up To Promote Social Partnerships In The European Textiles And Clothing Industry

BRUSSELS — May 23, 2024 — Supported by the European Commission, EURATEX and industriAll Europe have launched Stitch Together: a new Europe-wide two-year project to promote social partnerships in the European textiles and clothing Industry.

StitchTogether Kick Off

Stitch Together recognises the industry’s need to adapt to global competition, eco-friendly practices, and technological advancements, while ensuring decent working conditions and quality social dialogue. The project will foster constructive dialogue between employer and trade unions in seven countries with proud textile histories: Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Türkiye. Through seminars and capacity-building workshops, the project aims to enhance the capacity of social partners and empower them to engage in national and European-level social dialogues. Furthermore, the project seeks to increase social partner involvement in EU policy-making contributing to the development of sustainable and circular practices in the industry.

Dirk Vantyghem, director general of EURATEX, welcomed this new initiative: “Having a constructive and mature social dialogue is an important component of this new EU Industrial Deal, which should be part of the next European Commission’s agenda. This project is therefore very timely.”

Judith Kirton-Darling, secretary general of industriAll Europe, added “quality social dialogue is essential to make the green and digital transition of the textiles a success in Europe and ensure a Just Transition for workers. NCC Applauds House Farm Bill Legislation

Flax Fiber, A Serious Production Option For Automotive And Mobility

Automotive and Mobility manufacturers continue to evaluate Flax and Hemp materials across their model ranges as they seek to reduce the overall environmental impact of their products,while taking advantage of their technical properties, reports the Alliance of European Flax Linen & Hemp.

Natural fibers have been used for many years to reduce the carbon footprint in components such as acoustic insulation, headliners and interior moldings that exploited the fibers’ vibration damping and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) benefits. However, these applications have generally been parts that kept the fibers hidden. Flax is now being used in more visible parts and in significantly higher volumes.

EX30 Volvo

In one of the first visible interior trim packages to be available for a large volume series produced automobile, the new, all-electric, Volvo EX30 marks a major step for Volvo and Alliance member Bcomp, as customers can now select two interior trim packages featuring the natural aesthetics of woven ampliTexÔ flax fibers. The compact SUV focuses on sustainability and is designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any model in Volvo Cars’ history, with Bcomp’s flax fiber composites now offered as an optional trim for the dashboard and doors of the EX30.

Bcomp has recently completed its Series C funding round with a $40 million investment, led by Swiss institutional investor EGS Beteiligungen AG (EGSB), allowing the company to scale-up its production capacity for the automotive sector and develop new customer markets.

Representing the more bespoke end of the transport market, Greenlander, in partnership with investor and flax material specialist Depestele, showcased the Sherpa — the ultimate 4×4 expedition vehicle built to leave less impact as it travels — at JEC World Paris 2024 this year.

SHERPA Greenboat

The Sherpa, which will be formally launched at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf this summer, combines plant-based fibers like flax with bio-based resins and sustainable core materials like cork, wood and recycled PET foam to create durable and lightweight components. As well as the low impact materials, Greenlander also provides a unique business model, offering the composites items as a service and taking them back at the end of their life where they can then be repurposed or recycled.

Several other Alliance members have also developed colored flax solutions which are likely to become increasingly important as visual fiber flax solutions become more established in transport applications. Bcomp has successfully established a production route for back-injected automotive interior parts that uses its ampliTexÔ PP thermoplastic materials, combining speed and cost benefits of back-injection with the sustainability and performance improvements of colored natural fibers.

Terre de Lin, specialists in the production of dedicated flax fibers and rovings for composites, also launched 100-percent dyed flax fiber colored rovings at JEC World Paris 2024 this year. These untwisted 200 to 2400 tex rovings are chemical free and suitable for weaving, knitting, braiding, pultrusion, filament winding and automatic fibers placement processes.

“The latest automotive market developments for flax fibers see these unique natural fibers establishing a position as leading technical alternatives to traditional composite fibers,” comments Julie Pariset, Innovation & CSR director of the Alliance. “Scalable production, high-speed thermoplastic processing and multiple aesthetic color options now enable our members to meet mainstream automotive industry customer requirements.”

KARL MAYER Warp Preparation At ITM 2024: Inline Energy Recycling During Drying, BLUEDYE For Environmentally Friendly Indigo Dyeing And Innovations For Less Downtime

OBERTSHAUSEN, Germany — May 22, 2024 — KARL MAYER Warp Preparation has long been a reliable partner to the Turkish textile industry. Lower costs and environmental impact during sizing and indigo dyeing

The brand new system CASCADE offers customers a solution that enables them to significantly reduce steam consumption on sizing machines and dyeing systems. The basis for this is efficient energy recycling within the cylinder dryer: part of the system’s process steam flows is reused to heat up the final cylinder stages, in which the residual moisture is removed from the yarn at lower pressure and temperature values. Depending on the process conditions and system design, a steam saving of around 7% is thus possible and demonstrably so. A machine dashboard provides real-time data on the amount of recycled steam measured by a sensor. The values can be used to calculate the corresponding reduction in CO2 equivalents and costs.

For the denim industry, which is strongly anchored in Turkey, KARL MAYER has a media show for the BLUEDYE in its trade fair baggage. Thanks to clever technological details, the indigo dyeing unit is three times more efficient and two times cleaner than conventional counterparts on the market.

Solutions for maximum machine availability

Other innovations for the warp preparation industry focus on machine availability. Smart Size Box is a technology that monitors the condition of wear components and therefore makes a valuable contribution to predictive maintenance. The customer benefits from significantly less unplanned downtime.

In addition, a combined Care X-Tend and Connectivity Package will be presented based on the Care Solutions offerings for warp knitting. The product for next-generation after-sales service offers, among other things, easy access to fast remote assistance. Unlike conventional teleservice support, images and large volumes of data can now also be exchanged easily and securely, minimizing interruptions to operations. A ticket system is to be introduced in a further expansion stage. This feature, which has already been successfully launched in warp knitting, ensures transparency and efficient management of service requests. Market requirements play a central role in further developments.

Maximum productivity for warp sampling and sizing

The new MULTI-MATIC 32 Compact warp sampling machine offers twice the productivity of the previous model without taking up more space and enables simple, fast pattern changes. Thanks to the short changeover times, the customer can react flexibly to the needs of the market.

The LINK-MATIC system is a sophisticated automation solution that also considerably simplifies batch changeovers on indigo and sizing machines, thereby increasing productivity. An output increase of up to 30 percent is possible, depending on the number of batches. In addition, yarn waste can be reduced to a minimum.

This is what the KARL MAYER GROUP offers its customers with its new Energy Efficiency Solution. The innovation, which runs via the technology platform of KM.ON, helps warp knitting companies achieve less electricity waste and more sustainability, and shows the potential that arises from close cooperation among mechanical engineering, service and digitalization specialists.

Markus Bahde, Product Owner Digital at the KARL MAYER GROUP, talks with Ulrike Schlenker (US) from Corporate Communication at the KARL MAYER GROUP.

Schlenker: How did you come up with the idea of developing the Energy Efficiency Solution? What encouraged you to take this step?

Bahde: When designing and developing new solutions, we rely on our longstanding expertise in research and development and incorporate the innovations in our digitalization. In general, we work closely with our sales team: we have our ear to the ground and hear what our customers are saying. Like all production companies, warp knitting companies are currently under severe pressure in terms of energy costs, sustainability and documentation requirements. But there are also numerous national support programs that support measures for reducing the energy consumption of production units, including ones for industry. At the beginning of March, Italy adopted a decree-law to introduce the Transition 5.0 plan, thereby deciding to invest €6.3 billion in digitalization and the energy transition. Obviously, our development focus is the right one. This was already evident at ITMA 2023. At the leading textile machinery trade fair in Milan, we previewed our prototype to the specialist public and received very encouraging feedback. Many guests expressed their interest.

Schlenker: Why was the response so positive? Please explain what the new digital development offers customers and the benefits they can derive from it in more detail.

Bahde: The Energy Efficiency Solution offers multi-faceted support for warp knitting companies in energy management, including the display of real-time energy data for individual machines and the entire machine fleet, the analysis of historical energy data and the creation of energy reports. When the machine is heating up, it also enables efficient control without on-site manual adjustments. With these features, customers can take effective action to reduce energy consumption, electricity costs and CO2 emissions. A test customer was able to achieve a monthly energy saving of approximately 5% to 10% within a short time.

Schlenker: That is a significant amount! Are further steps planned or do you already have further developments in mind?

Bahde: Yes, we have already identified other use cases and prepared them on the system side. They will enable our customers to carry out additional and more detailed analyses. In addition, we constantly evaluate market feedback to continuously optimise and expand our solution to enhance customer value. The results will be incorporated into further release updates later this year. We are also planning major updates, which, alongside monitoring, will also optimise energy consumption. As a first step, in future, the Energy Efficiency Solution will independently make recommendations for action to reduce energy costs and CO2 consumption. In addition, we are planning to continuously expand and improve our services around machine condition.

Schlenker: Where and when can customers experience the performance of the Energy Efficiency Solution for themselves?

Bahde: The solution for more energy efficiency will be a highlight of our exhibition at ITM. The mechanical engineering fair will take place from 4 to 8 June in Istanbul.
