DuPont Engineers Kevlar® XP™ For Lighter-Weight Ballistic Applications

Wilmington, Del.-based DuPont’s Armor Technology Center has developed Kevlar® XP™, a product
designed for hard armor ballistic applications such as military and police helmets, and tactical
plates in protective vests. Kevlar XP for Hard Armor combines DuPont™ Kevlar KM2 Plus fiber with a
thermoplastic resin to create a matrix system. According to the company, using Kevlar XP can reduce
the weight of a typical Advanced Combat Helmet by one-half pound compared to helmets currently worn
that weigh almost 4 pounds. DuPont also reports that when used in other helmet and tactical plate
designs, Kevlar XP for Hard Armor offers increased protection and 20-percent higher ballistic
performance.

“DuPont is committed to protecting people around the world through science-based
innovations,” said Thomas G. Powell, president, DuPont Protection Technologies. “One of our goals
is to provide the U.S. military with new products that provide significantly better protection for
soldiers so they can more effectively complete their missions. The U.S. military was looking for a
lighter weight helmet option and DuPont developed this new product in less than a year. Using our
integrated science and more than 40 years of experience, we were able to offer a solution that not
only addresses the military’s needs to ‘lighten the load,’ but also to better protect the lives of
those who protect us.”

In related news, DuPont will manufacture Kevlar KM2 Plus, a precursor to Kevlar XP, at a new
facility currently under construction near Charleston, S.C. The site — with an estimated
construction cost of $500 million — will open in early 2012, boosting the company’s Kevlar
production by approximately 25 percent.

Rhodia Introduces Evolite™ By Technyl®

Rhodia Group — a France-based manufacturer of specialty chemicals for the automotive, consumer
goods, electronics, industrial, flavors and fragrances, and health, personal and home care markets
— has launched Evolite™ By Technyl®, a range of high-performance polyamide-based
continuous-fiber-reinforced composite materials.

Glass, carbon or other fibers can be used to make Evolite materials, which Rhodia offers in
recyclable pre-impregnated fabrics or consolidated plates for end-uses including transport seating,
car bumper beams and front-end structures, racing bicycle frames, or window frames. According to
the company, parts comprising Evolite exhibit good strength, toughness and ageing properties as
well as improved crash resistance. Because the material is more fluid, production of Evolite is
faster than that of thermoset technologies, thereby offering cost savings.

“Evolite is a breakthrough solution with considerable growth ahead of it,” said François
Hincker, president of Rhodia’s Engineering Plastics Global Business Unit. “We see it as setting the
standard for future generations of composites.”

Herrmann Ultrasonics Introduces Ultrasonic Perforating

Bartlett, Ill.-based Herrmann Ultrasonics Inc. — a manufacturer of ultrasonic welding equipment
and a Germany-based Herrmann Group company — has debuted equipment that ultrasonically perforates
wound dressings made from a soft foam-based laminate. The technology enables the air-permeable
contact layer of the dressing to adhere to the skin and absorb blood and wound secretions, yet be
gently removed from the skin. Dressings that are perforated ultrasonically also protect bedsores
from being further strained by pressure.

The ultrasonic perforating process creates pin holes in the wound dressing without using as
much energy and heat as a heat perforation process does, which, according to Herrmann, enhances the
product performance of the contact layer’s adhesive properties. The company also reports that
ultrasonic perforation technology enables production speeds up to two to three times faster than
speeds using heat perforation, and product quality remains the same even at varying speeds during
the start-up and deceleration phases of the machine.

According to Herrmann, other benefits of ultrasonic perforating include: immediate system
readiness of the machine because it doesn’t require heating up; immediate changing of process
parameters and easy adjustment of different memories if different materials are being processed;
Herrmann’s patented Microgap Control, which accurately controls the distance between the anvil drum
and sonotrode to the micrometer and guarantees process monitoring and repeat accuracy; and an
increase in overall equipment efficiency.

Precision Textiles Debuts EnVision

Totowa, N.J.-based Precision Textiles — a division of Precision Custom Coatings LLC, a
manufacturer of nonwoven, coated and laminated fabrics for apparel, automotive, healthcare, home
furnishings, filtration, footwear and bedding applications, among others — has introduced
EnVision, a laminated composite product that combines ticking fabric with a flame-resistant (FR)
barrier, thereby eliminating the need for quilting, and offering a more economical option to
mattress manufacturers. Precision reports the lamination method enables the FR barrier to move in
conjunction with the ticking and exhibit good stretch and recovery; and the FR adhesive used is
soft, stretchable and durable.

According to Precision Textiles’ Industrial Business Manager Keith Martin, the company
created the line to fulfill the increasing demand by mattress manufacturers for cleaner-looking
mattress borders that better contrast with mattress panels, compared with traditional solutions.
“We designed EnVision to create the perfect blending of ticking and fiber (FR and Non FR) for use
in non-quilted borders or tops of bed panels, providing a soft, supple feel, along with a smooth,
sophisticated look,” he said.

New Parking Facility Features SKYShades Solar Fabric Parking Structure

Longwood, Fla.-based SKYShades, a fabric structures company that designs and engineers a variety of
lightweight protective and solar power generation solutions, recently announced the first
installation of a tensile membrane solar parking structure featuring thin-film photovoltaic solar
panels. The installation, at a West Palm Beach office park, uses the solar panels to produce
electricity to power lights and electric car and golf cart charging stations in the parking
structure, as well as provide shelter from rain and protection from the sun.

SKYShades first incorporated the thin-film photovoltaic technology from Lowell, Mass.-based
Konarka Technologies Inc. into umbrella and awning products such as its Powerbrella™
(See ”
Quality
Fabric of the Month: Umbrella Power
,” July/August 2009,
Textile World)
.

“The solar parking installation is a killer application representing the result of several
years of research and development having the sun at its core: on one hand it fulfills the crucial
need to provide shade and protect from harmful [ultraviolet] rays that cause skin cancer, and on
the other hand it harvests the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable electricity,” said Joe
McKenna, executive vice president, SKYShades.

The company reports it currently is looking at several business models to further
commercialize the technology both quickly and cost-effectively.
