Organic Cotton Accelerator Launches In Turkey

ISTANBUL, Turkey — June 25, 2024 — The Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA) proudly announces its launch in Türkiye, marking a significant step in uniting players across the organic cotton value chain in this key production country. OCA will deliver its transformative programme designed to support local organic cotton farmers and those interested in transitioning, thereby scaling the global supply of organic cotton. To highlight the launch, OCA is hosting a stakeholder event in Istanbul this week, bringing together key players to discuss the future of organic cotton in the country.

As the only multistakeholder initiative dedicated to organic cotton, convening close to 60 organisations, OCA will act in Türkiye as a dedicated enabler, focusing on capacity building and empowering farmers with essential knowledge to adopt organic agricultural practices. By leveraging its eight years’ experience at the farm level in India and recent work in Pakistan—where it works with more than 100,000 farmers across both countries—OCA is committed to helping create the right conditions for farmers to manage a thriving organic business within Türkiye’s agricultural context.

“We are excited to kick off our work in Türkiye with our partners,” said Bart Vollaard, OCA’s Executive Director. “This marks a significant step in OCA’s commitment to scaling organic cotton globally. As OCA, we connect key players, including farmers, ginners, brands, retailers and civil society organisations, to create market linkages and robust support systems for farmers. To accelerate the growth of organic cotton production, OCA is creating a transparent, responsible, and resilient organic cotton supply chain. One that prioritises farmer prosperity and enables all stakeholders to achieve their sustainability goals. I am thrilled we can offer that support in Türkiye now, and invite all interested partners to join us on our mission.”

Before launching in Türkiye, OCA has adapted its approach to the local realities, supported by a thorough understanding of the organic business case for Turkish farmers and market insights. OCA’s first local partnerships resulted in the launch of four projects together with 48 farmers. These projects guarantee upfront procurement agreements and premium payments to farmers, while fostering a supportive community of like-minded organic cotton producers.

Through the promotion and facilitation of regenerative and organic agricultural practices, OCA ensures that cotton farmers can adopt methods that enhance soil health, biodiversity, and overall ecosystem resilience, leading to more sustainable farming. This commitment includes long-term engagements that align with the specific needs of the Turkish cotton farming community. OCA’s systems are designed to uphold high standards of integrity while providing farmers with a compelling business rationale to adopt and maintain organic practices.

“Organic cotton not only enriches our soil and environment but also provides us with better market opportunities and fair prices,” said Bünyamin Çam one of the farmers working with OCA in Türkiye. “It’s a sustainable path that benefits our community and future generations. We look forward to working with the Organic Cotton Accelerator as we increase our organic cotton production.”

Recognising Türkiye as the world’s second-largest organic cotton producer, OCA aims to accelerate organic cotton production while increasing the visibility of Turkish organic farmers in the global value chain. Its approach is specifically tailored to fit local conditions, addressing farm sizes, economic considerations for farmers, and prevalent management practices. OCA’s efforts are particularly focused on South-Eastern Anatolia and the Aegean region, areas known for their long history of organic production.

OCA’s approach in Türkiye and globally relies on listening to stakeholders and collaboratively developing solutions. By engaging with farmers, suppliers and manufacturers, brands, and other stakeholders, OCA ensures that its initiatives are well-informed and effectively address the needs and challenges of the local organic cotton community.

Bringing together dozens of key organisations from actors in the country, on June 25, OCA is hosting its first stakeholder event in Türkiye. This event will showcase perspectives and experiences from farmers, suppliers, manufacturers, and global brands to underscore and advocate for the importance and potential of organic cotton in the country. Featuring a blend of presentations, panel sessions, and interactive dialogues, attendees will benefit from comprehensive insights and expertise on the organic cotton market in Türkiye.

“Being a partner in the Organic Cotton Accelerator programme in Türkiye has enabled us to support farmers in adopting sustainable practices while securing high-quality organic cotton for our products. This collaboration strengthens the entire supply chain and contributes to a healthier planet,” said a representative of Çalık Cotton, one of OCA’s partners in the country.

OCA welcomes actors from across the value chain to join this transformative journey in Türkiye. Together, we can support farmers transitioning to organic cotton and ensure sustainable growth for the organic cotton sector.

TrusTrace Unveils Upgraded Forced Labor Prevention Solution To Enable Proactive Compliance For Fashion And Textile Supply Chains

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — June 25, 2024 — TrusTrace, a global SaaS company with a market-leading platform for product traceability and supply chain compliance in fashion and retail, today announced the launch of its upgraded AI-powered Forced Labor Prevention (FLP) Solution, which will help brands proactively map out supply chains, screen it for risk, and efficiently gather evidence for regulatory compliance.

“Our comprehensive FLP solution is not just a tool, but a commitment to a world where transparency and ethical practices in supply chains are non-negotiable. Ensuring that forced labor has no place in our global economy is critical, and with our solution, brands can proactively and confidently lead the way in this imperative transformation, instead of merely ensuring they have a solution for the release of detained shipments,” said Shameek Ghosh, CEO of TrusTrace. “With a proactive approach to supply chain data brands can be in the drivers’ seat not only for tackling forced labor but for multiple supply chain challenges, as well as opportunities, something that leading brands are already doing today.”

The Forced Labor Prevention solution uniquely combines the power of AI to manage large quantities of data from complex supply chains with scalable collection of primary data per purchase order, which is screened and validated for risk, ensuring brands have validated evidence at a product and shipment level.

The solution collects primary data directly from suppliers to ensure detailed and reliable information about facilities, products, and materials. The primary data collected through the TrusTrace solution is specific to the context of the traced products, contrary to solutions leveraging third party data, which can introduce large quantities of irrelevant information from various sources, creating ‘noise’ that can obscure critical insights and quickly become unmanageable. TrusTrace has traced more than two million purchase orders to date and has more than 55,000 suppliers and facilities mapped globally, demonstrating the capacity to automate the collection of primary data at very large scale.

The data is proactively screened for risk against the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) entity list, and the solution can integrate with any relevant risk screening database.

AI-Powered Chain of Custody Creation and Document Collection drives speed, accuracy and cost savings, making it quick and easy to gain supply chain visibility and stay on top of documentation for compliance. The FLP solution can classify, extract, and translate large volumes of documents in over 100 languages, facilitating the creation of a digital chain of custody, and transforming traditionally time-consuming manual processes, increasing efficiency, and reducing the likelihood of human error.

15 brands worldwide are already using TrusTrace for forced labor prevention, including Vera Bradley (NYSE: VRA), who see proactive supply chain traceability and data management as key in achieving their ESG commitments.

“At Vera Bradley, our commitment to sourcing responsibly is at the core of our business practices,” said Director of Global Sourcing Ayfer Yarcich. “Mapping our supply chain and gathering purchase order data is a critical step in this journey. By integrating TrusTrace’s upgraded FLP solution, we are not only working towards a transparent and forced labor-free supply chain but also aspiring to set a new standard in responsible and sustainable business practices. This transformative step underscores our dedication to our public ESG commitments and our vision of leading the industry towards a more ethical and sustainable future.”

The Forced Labor Prevention Solution has helped Vera Bradley achieve granular visibility into their supply chain, allowing the brand to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.

“Meeting varying data reporting requirements can be challenging for brands,” added Ghosh. “TrusTrace has created a comprehensive solution with a flexible framework that collects all relevant traceability data points, so brands can consolidate data collection to comply with multiple current and future regulations. Spending less time and resources on compliance then frees up valuable time to focus on driving new business opportunities and – ultimately – impact.”

The KARL MAYER GROUP Wins Patent Dispute In China

OBERTSHAUSEN, Germany— June 24, 2024 — The KARL MAYER GROUP has scored an important victory in the fight against product piracy in China.

The innovative textile machinery and plant engineering company has reported a patent infringement by its competitor, Fujian Xin Gang Textile Machinery Co. Ltd. and, after several years of dispute in court, has been vindicated in the second instance. The proceedings started back in 2021 before the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court.

Following an appeal by the KARL MAYER GROUP, the final judgement was handed down by the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China in May 2024. It ruled in favour of the German plaintiff. Fujian Xin Gang Textile’s counterclaim for cancellation of the patent in question was dismissed, and the Chinese manufacturer must immediately cease manufacturing, selling and advertising the machines with the technical solution that was the subject of the legal dispute. A fine was also imposed.

The subject of the legal dispute was a constructive system for heating the carrying-lever shaft of Tricot and Raschel machines. This clever solution enables the technology leader’s machines equipped with carbon bars to compensate for changing ambient temperatures. A patent for the technical innovation was granted in China in November 2011.

Solutions centred around carbon technology contribute to significant increases in machine performance, but are also the result of extensive development work. As a leading supplier of textile machinery and a long-standing technological pioneer, the KARL MAYER GROUP spends around 18%* of its turnover on R&D and investments. Its worldwide R&D centers generate the best economic and technical products, services and innovations that move the textile world and help its international customers to be successful. These pioneering achievements must be protected.

Zhen Kong, General Manager of KARL MAYER (CHINA)

With the judgement on the latest patent dispute, the Group is signalling: copying is not worth it! The court’s decision also gives the global player security in its business activities in the important Chinese market.

“The judgement shows that legal certainty in competition is being strengthened in China. This is an important message, especially for companies that focus on progress and the development of innovations,” says Zhen Kong, General Manager of KARL MAYER (CHINA).

Fashion And Lifestyle Giant Inditex (Zara) Joins Canopy’s Pack4Good Initiative To Keep Vital Forests Out Of Paper Packaging

VANCOUVER, BC— June 24, 2024 — Today, Inditex, the parent company of fashion brand Zara, and six other brands such as Berksha and Massimo Dutti, is joining solutions-driven non-profit Canopy’s Pack4Good campaign. Through Pack4Good, partners focus on sustainable alternatives to logging Ancient and Endangered Forests, including recycled pulp and paper, Next Generations Solutions, and FSC Certification.

Inditex’s decade-long CanopyStyle commitment to eliminate the use of Ancient and Endangered Forests in their textiles has now expanded to ensure these vital forests are not ending up in their paper packaging.

The fashion sector is a major consumer of paper packaging for shipping boxes, e-commerce envelopes, paper bags, hang tags, and paperboard boxes. Protecting and restoring natural forests is essential to stabilizing the climate and reversing the biodiversity crisis. Reduction, reuse, recycled content, as well as Next Gen alternatives made from waste, are key to a healthier and more sustainable planet.

“It’s exciting to have Inditex bring the same leadership to reducing their paper packaging footprint as they have for the last decade to eliminate vital forests from their textiles,” said Nicole Rycroft, Executive Director of Canopy. “A company of their significance sends a signal to paper packaging suppliers that it’s time to give forests a break and to invest in and scale lower impact alternatives.”

“Inditex has worked hard to keep endangered forests out of our textile supply chain. Now we will extend that work to our packaging, where we have already taken steps towards reduction, reuse and increase of recycled content. We look forward to continuing this work with Canopy to bring it to a new level, including the development of Next Gen alternatives that both reduce waste and help keep forests standing,” explained Javier Losada, Inditex Chief Sustainability Officer.

Inditex Group owns Zara, Berksha, Pull & Bear, Massimo Dutti, Stradivarius, Oysho, and Zara Home. The Group has made a long journey to reduce its use of paper with initiatives such as Green to Pack (GtP), a program for reusing warehouse-to-retail paper boxes up to five times before sending them for recycling. This resulted in a reduction of nearly 80% of paper use within that segment of their packaging — not to mention millions of dollars in cost savings for the company. Inditex has also launched #BRINGYOURBAG initiative, to encourage reuse by applying a fee for paper bags and envelopes in almost 70 markets. This has incentivized their customers to reduce paper bag consumption by 47%.

Inditex has also been one of the Next Gen MMCF stalwarts, making a public commitment to purchase 2000 tonnes of the first commercial-scale circular MMCF pulp and committing to invest in the development of Next Gen materials that do not yet exist at an industrial scale so as to enable 25% of their textiles being Next Gen by 2030.

As a Pack4Good partner, the company will continue building on existing initiatives to reduce the amount of packaging it uses, including employing reusable boxes for intra- business use, increasing recycled paper content, and incorporating innovative Next Generation fibres into their paper packaging. Next Gen alternatives to wood fibre for paper include plentiful materials around the world that are commonly wasted or burned, like cereal straws, hemp stalks, jute, or even tomato stems.

The addition of Inditex brings the Pack4Good initiative to 449 brands, worth over 287.4 billion USD in annual revenue.

Inspiring, By Tonello: From The Concept To The Website

SARCEDO, Italy — June 24, 2024 — Tonello’s new “Inspiring” website is finally online. A side viewpoint on the world of fashion and denim. The most direct expression of the company’s “soul” and vision.

Inspiring is: “A meeting point between art and technology, a privileged place for sharing and exchange, a creative area, an atelier in which to research and brainstorm, experiment with effects and draw dreams. And to transform the most innovative ideas into real garments, prototypes and premises of the next collections.”

Inspiring was created to connect brands, professionals, companies, students and talk yes about technologies, but above all about creativity, style, people and protagonists of an ever-evolving industry. With a privileged focus on the theme of “true sustainability”.

With Inspiring Tonello manifests its new digital face that aims to inspire and connect denim insiders like never before. The new website inspiring.tonello.com is more than just a website: it is a journey of discovery into a world full of innovation and creativity.

Divided into 5 sections – Essence, Dossier, Journal, The Story, Collections – it freely and creatively expresses the vision of the Tonello brand, to stimulate discussions, comparisons, opinions. And to share values in an innovative and non-standardized way, intuitive and definitely out of the box.

If the “Essence” section tries to summarize the inspiring concept and serves as an ideal introduction to the whole project, the other menu items take us inside the Tonello world told in a warm, passionate and engaging tone of voice.

In detail, “Journal” is the tag that includes, in addition to the #madebypeople section, full of interviews and testimonials, updates and reflections on Tonello’s research, new technologies and processes; “Dossier” collects a series of “how to” posts, with tips, for example, on how to treat one’s denim garments to make them last longer, or to dye them in a natural and sustainable way; “The Story” hosts the first two chapters (the third is coming soon) of an unusual story, a sort of puzzle in which different threads are interwoven, articulated over decades (from the 1970s to the 1990s and from the 1990s to 2010): Tonello’s history, that of the evolution of denim, that of society, costume, and pop culture; “Collections” is the section in which Tonello presents the most interesting and innovative research and experimentation materialized in real exclusive and cult “capsule collections,” developed with the collaboration of some of the best-known designers in the international denim world.

Tonello’s new website is therefore not just an informational portal. It is a platform that inspires, connects, and engages. Every detail is designed to make the user experience unique and rich in value while each section reflects Tonello’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The new Inspiring site is thus a place to discover and share ideas, where for once technologies take a step back in favor of topics such as, for example, humanity and creativity.

It is, in short, the true, original brand-manifesto of Tonello, that is, of what not surprisingly calls itself “The Inspiring Company.” Happy browsing!
