AUTEFA Solutions Increases Capability Of Fibers Supply Chain New Concept Of AUTEFA Improves Automatic Fiber Logistics Productivity And Quality

FRIEDBERG, Germany — January 25, 2015 — AUTEFA Solutions, world market leader of automatic fiber logistics and manufacturer of hydraulic fiber presses presented a new machine concept two years ago with the UNI-FORK. The UNI-FORK optimizes the process of pressing a bale, increases the efficiency of the process and improves the quality of the fiber packing. In the meantime the process reached marketability and machines have already been installed at customers of AUTEFA Solutions successfully.

One of the customers is Shandong Yingli in China. As one of the first Chinese companies Shandong Yingli produces Lyocell fibers. Lyocell is an industrially produced regenerated fiber based on cellulose, produced with direct wet spinning process. Lyocell fibers are used for different applications such as textiles in the medical area and as nonwoven product for hygienic and cosmetics products. Using the fiber in the hygienic industry means highest requirements for the bale packing, Therefore Shandong Yingli was interested in the new solution of AUTEFA. Shandong Yingli was also convinced of the total concept with the extensive optimization of the process. For this reason the company bought a fully-automatic fiber press from AUTEFA.

The Concept Of UNI-FORK And AD-WRAP

The UNI-FORK intelligent concept saves costs with a very small investment for a fully automatic process while improving quality. The central idea of the system is to use one transfer fork for one or more prepresses and to operate one or more main presses. At Shandong Yingli the cut Lyocell fiber of two (or more) independently working fiber lines go via a condenser to two (or more) AUTEFA pre-presses and are pre-compacted to a bale. These pre-compacted bales are taken out with the central working UNI-FORK on a rotating basis of the pre-presses and handed over to a central main-press. The main-press compresses the bale totally and makes the strapping around the bale. Afterwards the bales will be packed with two overlapping, elastic stretch hoods of polyethylene (AD-WRAP). In this way, the packing of the fiber bale is completely protected against dirt, foreign fibers (like hair) and insects. It has protection against contamination like no other type of packing. For every kind of hygienic fiber, it is a significant improvement, avoiding waste, decreasing costs and improving sustainability of the supply chain. Companies who still strap and pack manually can quickly profit with the AD-WRAP. A return on investment can be recognized in approximately 1.5 years.

Other advantages of the UNI-FORK are the high total capacity of up to 60 bales/h per main press, the gentle fiber transfer and the universal usability. Not only high-performance fiber lines with over 300 tons per day but also small fiber lines for aramid, polypropylene or colored fibers can be designed individually.

UNI-FORK and AD-WRAP from AUTEFA Solutions are known worldwide, are unique and are protected by a patent. Both machines together form a system which leads to a strong reduction of personnel costs, high availability of the machine and a short amortization period.

HANNOVER, Germany and CHICAGO, Ill. — January 21, 2016 — DOMOTEX 2016 drew to a close with outstanding results, earning its place among the best-ever stagings of the world’s flagship fair for carpets and floor coverings. With 1,441 exhibitors from 59 countries and 45,000 trade visitors from more than 100 nations, DOMOTEX delivered fresh momentum for the international floor coverings industry, serving as a powerful driver of sales, trends and innovations.

“Whatever aspect you choose to look at — exhibitor lineup, visitor turnout, international coverage, the ratio of decision-makers present — exhibitors and visitors all attest to the event’s top performance, underscoring its ever greater appeal for the sector,” remarked Dr. Jochen Köckler, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member in charge of DOMOTEX, on the last day of the show. “DOMOTEX has demonstratively enhanced its reputation as an unrivalled source of momentum for the global floor coverings industry.”

Exhibitors were delighted with the high level of competence and decision-making authority among the show’s attendees, with more than 72 percent of them being top managers who play a role in their companies’ purchasing decisions. The majority of visitors at this year’s DOMOTEX were retail and wholesale buyers (13,500 and 11,400, respectively). The fair also attracted architects, interior designers and contractors (3,700), as well as 9,400 skilled tradespeople.

Pacesetter For Innovations

DOMOTEX impressively confirmed the floor covering industry’s dynamic power and innovative spirit. “In each and every segment – carpets, parquet and laminate flooring, designer floors, machine-woven carpets and hand-made rugs – the international floor coverings industry sported a stunning and highly innovative array of patterns, materials, shapes and colors, thus ideally positioning itself for the coming season,” observed Köckler.

Under the slogan “Tread on Me”, DOMOTEX invited visitors to “walk all over” the latest trends, including a wide range of natural-look rugs and carpets. This back-to-nature trend was evident both in the prominence of beige, brown, green and pastel hues and in the frequent use of landscape images. Many designers are actually designing products in anticipation of footprints being left on them, making them reminiscent of grass or soft earth when freshly walked upon. This natural look is also in demand for wood flooring. Shapes and textures can be mixed and matched to create a wide range of looks. The event also showcased innovative systems for quick and easy floor laying. Another hot trend is carpeting in the form of tiles and planks, with one highlight being designer floor coverings that almost perfectly replicate wood grains or tiles, while at the same time being comparatively easy to lay. The demand for sustainably manufactured products is also on the rise.

The Innovations@DOMOTEX showcase put a big spotlight on highly innovative floor coverings. The three Innovations@DOMOTEX areas proved highly popular among the show’s visitors, drawing special attention to 84 selected innovations in the categories textile and resilient floor coverings, parquet and laminate flooring and contemporary hand-made rugs. This made it easy for trade visitors to get a concise look at the sector’s hottest innovations, thus providing valuable orientation for the year ahead.

Other standout attractions included the Innovations@DOMOTEX Dialogues spotlighting key industry topics by means of presentations and panel discussions by and with top international designers like Piero Lissoni. The focus was on current design trends and advances for hotels, catering, offices, healthcare, shopping/retail and home interiors. User-centric Guided Tours provided in-depth coverage of the topics addressed, and featured innovations provided architects, interior designers and planners with a unique overview of the broad and varied range of floor coverings available today.

Another visitor magnet at DOMOTEX was the third edition of the Wood Flooring Summit. Targeted at the international parquet and laminate flooring sector, this special event was staged in Hall 9, where visitors were introduced to all the current trends, developments and new materials for parquet, laminate, cork, bamboo and outdoor floor coverings.

Meanwhile, Hall 7 was the “El Dorado” for parquet and laminate floor layers, interior decorators and painters. The “Skilled Trades Hub” featured a comprehensive exhibition and presentation program dedicated to real-world solutions for practitioners. Another strong drawing card was the European Interior Decorating Competition – an event held over two days and featuring top young interior decorators from Germany, Austria, South Tyrol and Switzerland, who impressed an appreciative audience with their skills. Recognizing the world’s best designer carpets in eight different categories, The Carpet Design Awards were also staged at DOMOTEX, featuring a prize which ranks as the highest international accolade for contemporary hand-made carpets.

U.S. Textile Manufacturers Endorse Trans-Pacific Partnership

WASHINGTON — January 20, 2016 — The National Council of Textile Organizations voted to formally support the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement. The decision to support TPP came after an exhaustive analysis determined that NCTO’s principle objectives were met as part of the finalized terms of the agreement. These objectives include:

  • A strong yarn forward rule of origin for the vast majority of textile and apparel products.
  • Reasonable, multi-year tariff phase-outs for sensitive textile and apparel products.
  • Terms that provided for the stability of the Western Hemisphere textile and apparel production chain.

“Due to the inclusion of Vietnam and other major textile and apparel exporting countries, the TPP agreement is the most significant trade policy initiative to confront the U.S. textile sector over the past 25 years,” stated Jeff Price, NCTO Chairman and President of the Specialty Fabrics Division at Milliken and Company. “As such, it was critical for our government to produce a final agreement that appropriately reflected the needs of U.S. textile manufacturers and the hundreds of thousands of workers we employ nationwide. We believe that the agreement concluded late last year in Atlanta meets our core objectives and is worthy of our full support.”
“No agreement is perfect, and certainly that is the case with TPP,” Price continued. “There were difficult trade-offs that we, as U.S. manufacturers, had to consider during this process, as is the case with any complicated negotiation. Nonetheless, this agreement is very sound in the essential elements that govern textile trade. We stated throughout the entire negotiating process that if our key objectives were met, NCTO would support the final agreement. Today, we are making good on that commitment to the U.S. government by pledging our support of TPP. With legislative review and action expected in 2016, NCTO looks forward to working with congressional leadership, the committees of jurisdiction, our supporters on Capitol Hill, and the Obama Administration on a path forward for TPP.”
“We extend our thanks to Ambassador Michael Froman and the entire U.S. negotiating team for their willingness to acknowledge our input throughout the TPP process,” Price concluded.

The U.S. textile and apparel industry is a significant contributor to the U.S. economy, producing over $70 billion in annual output and employing nearly 500,000 workers nationwide. In addition, the U.S. textile and apparel sector exported more than $24 billion in goods in 2014.

Ahlstrom Sells Its Glassfiber Business To Owens Corning

HELSINKI — January 22, 2016 — Ahlstrom has signed an agreement to divest its Building & Wind business unit to Owens Corning, a U.S.-based company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The initial debt and cash free purchase price, which is subject to EBITDA adjustment, is EUR 73 million.

The Building & Wind business unit produces glassfiber tissue used mainly in flooring applications as well as reinforcements used in windmill blades. In 2014 the net sales of the business was approximately EUR 77 million and the business was profitable. The unit operates two plants in Finland in Karhula and Mikkeli and one in Tver, Russia, employing in total approximately 260 persons. It serves markets mainly in Europe and Russia as well as in North America and Asia.

“This transaction will strengthen our balance sheet and enables us to develop other businesses more efficiently and pursue growth in areas aligned to our strategy,” says Marco Levi, President & CEO of Ahlstrom. “We are happy to have identified Owens Corning as the buyer as it is vertically integrated and has ample resources to develop the glassfiber business further. We also believe this is a good solution for the unit’s employees transferring to the new owner.”

The unit to be divested was part of the Building and Energy business area until the end of 2015, while it has been part of the Filtration & Performance business area from the beginning of this year.

The transaction is expected to be completed during the first half of 2016 and is subject to customary completion terms, such as merger clearances from relevant competition authorities.

Ahlstrom expects to book a capital gain of approximately EUR 25 million following the completion of the transaction. The gain will not have an impact on Ahlstrom’s operating profit excluding non-recurring items.

The divestment of the Building & Wind business will have no impact on the company’s outlook statement for 2015. Ahlstrom will publish its Financial statements bulletin 2015 on January 29, 2016 at approximately 8:30 a.m. EET. From the beginning of 2016 the Building & Wind business will be reported as part of discontinued operations until the transaction has been completed.

VDMA: Working Group Hybrid Lightweight Technologies Formed 

FRANKFURT —  January 22, 2016 — With the formation of the Working Group Hybrid Lightweight Technologies the VDMA is engaging with a promising field of technology. Multi-material design sees materials increasingly being combined in lightweight applications. The 175 VDMA member firms in the Composite Technology Forum will therefore in future also concern themselves with composite-metal bonding. With that in view, the forum is being replaced by the Working Group.More than 115 interested parties were present for the Working Group’s inaugural event. For the time being, the founding board will have seven members. They elected one of their number, Peter Egger of Engel Austria GmbH, as chairman.

The aim of the Working Group is to match the VDMA’s existing machinery manufacturing skills in lightweight construction, which are not confined to any particular material, with the needs of customer industries. In future, user and supplier industries and research institutes active in the field will therefore also take part in this important exchange.

Diversity of materials determines areas of activity

Motivated by the need to save energy and resources, the automotive industry, alongside aerospace, transport and the wind industry, is now the force driving lightweight construction. If the most suitable material, with its particular characteristics, is deployed in the right place, this will ideally produce the optimal system solution sought both in terms of design and economy.

Series manufacturing requires suitable production and bonding technologies such as plant and machinery manufacturers have to offer. The Working Group’s areas of activity will extend from materials by way of bonding technologies to production technology networking. The overarching questions to be examined will include simulation methods, functional integration and life cycle considerations.

EU Platform With Industrial-Policy Significance

The Working Group Hybrid Lightweight Technologies will be application-oriented and consider a wide range of materials and industries. “We are creating a platform for the exchange of experience that will be accessible across Europe, with the aim of helping its members to develop markets and strengthen their market position worldwide,” says Peter Egger, Chairman of the Working Group. “An event concept and the development of existing trade fair activities will make an important contribution to this.”

In the coalition agreement, the Federal Government ranks lightweight construction as a particularly important sector alongside Industry 4.0. The year 2015 saw the publication of a study of the current state of lightweight construction in Germany (‘Bestandsaufnahme Leichtbau in Deutschland’), commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. This will serve as a basis for an industrial-policy dialogue, to which the VDMA’s Working Group Hybrid Lightweight Technologies will make a major contribution.

Auburn Manufacturing Inc. Files Trade Case Against Unfairly Priced And Subsidized Chinese Imports

MECHANIC FALLS, Maine — January 20, 2016 —Today, Auburn Manufacturing Inc. (AMI) filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission requesting imposition of antidumping and countervailing duties on certain amorphous silica fabric, an industrial textile, from the People’s Republic of China.  AMI is the largest U.S. manufacturer of silica fabric, operating two manufacturing plants in Maine.  AMI is the principal supplier of amorphous silica fabric to the U.S. Navy.

AMI has lost a significant number of sales to Chinese imports due to increasingly low import prices.  As detailed in the petition, AMI believes that imports of silica fabric from China are being “dumped” in the U.S. market at unfairly low prices.  AMI also provides evidence in the petition that the Chinese government is providing unfair subsidies to Chinese producers of silica fabric.

As a result of the lost sales, AMI has suffered decreased production, revenue and profits.  AMI has seen an ever larger amount of sales be awarded to Chinese imports, especially since 2014.  AMI believes that these imports are not compliant with either the Buy American Act (requiring over 50% US content), or the Berry Amendment, which generally requires textiles purchased with funds allocated by the Department of Defense to be 100% of U.S. origin.

Without relief from dumped and subsidized low-priced Chinese imports, it will become increasingly difficult for AMI to continue making this product.  This is the latest segment of the U.S. textile industry to be replaced by Chinese imports as a result of unfair trade practices.  In the long run, if these unfair practices are not curbed, the U.S. military will suffer because it will be unable to source these products from U.S. companies.  The filing of the petition was necessary to keep AMI as a viable supplier to the Navy and to protect textile workers in Maine.

AMI looks forward to investigations by the two U.S. government agencies to confirm AMI’s evidence of dumping, subsidization, and injury, and urges the U.S. government to impose antidumping and countervailing duties to offset the injurious effects of these dumped and subsidized Chinese imports.
