AAPN’s Sue Strickland, Mike Todaro Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award During 2019 pro:Americas Annual Meeting

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — May 6, 2019 — Today, on the first day of the American Apparel Producers’ Network (AAPN) annual pro:Americas conference, Sue Strickland, executive director, and Mike Todaro, managing director, were honored with lifetime achievement awards.

Tony Anzovino, AAPN president and chief sourcing and merchandising officer, Haggar Clothing Co., invited some of AAPN’s directors and members of the executive committee to the stage as he presented Strickland and Todaro with the award. Carlos Arias, CEO, Winds Enterprises; Kurt Cavano, founder, Infor/GTNexus; Rick Horwitch, vice president, global retail & supply chain strategy, Bureau Veritas; Juan Zighelboim, president, TexOps; Joe Cuervo, senior strategic sourcing manager – materials, Kohls; and Ron Roach, president, Contempora Fabrics, thanked Strickland and Todaro for their dedication while sharing a few words.

Strickland has run the organization since 1991 when it was known as the American Apparel Contractors Association. Todaro joined her in 1995. Membership numbers dropped drastically following the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement, but through hard work and a willingness to embrace change — opening membership to the Americas in 2001, later the world; changing the name first to the American Apparel Producers Network, then in 2013 to the Americas Apparel Producers’ Network to reflect the changing nature of the organization; hosting conferences in Central and South America; adding regional conferences across the United States to allow less-senior personnel the opportunity to participate in the network; and establishing the Carolinas Mill tour to help educate brands and retailers on steps in the garment production chain with a focus on the supply chain available in the Carolinas — AAPN is thriving and growing today.

“It is truly a lifetime that they’ve worked hard at this, and it was time to honor that,” said Anzovino. “After all these years, the fact that they are so open to change is amazing and is one of the reasons this network has grown so much in recent years and continues to grow.”

“I can think of no two people who have helped to elevate the supply chain in the Americas, and the world, more than the two of you,” said Horwitch. “While doing so, you have helped to make the world, and millions of lives, better. You are educators and connectors. You innovators and disruptors. We are not only members of the AAPN, we are part of a global, interconnected, network.”

“I have known Mike and Sue for more than a dozen years,” said Cavano. “Through their leadership, the AAPN has brought together a unique cross section of the entire apparel supply chain. They built an organization that focused on the Americas when the rest of the industry was abandoning it. Fast forward to now and as the Americas have reemerged as a key component of almost every company’s supply chain, AAPN leads the conversation and serves as the heartbeat of this renaissance.”

“I know of no other organization in our industry, or any industry, that truly lives and breathes professional networks,” said Walter Wilhelm, chairman, WWA Advisors. “Sue’s and Mike’s contributions to openness throughout our supply chain have been simply invaluable.”

Headquartered in Atlanta, AAPN states that its goals are to raise the collective “Apparel IQ” of the industry and build the “21st Century Supply Chain of the Americas.” Members — located in North America, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, Europe and Asia — comprise the more than 30 links of the apparel supply chain.

Expressing Creativity – The Felix Schoeller Group Presents New Products At FESPA 2019

OSNABRÜCK, Germany — May 6, 2019 — The Felix Schoeller Group, a Germany-based manufacturer of high-quality specialty papers, is once again this year taking the opportunity offered by FESPA to present and discuss some exciting new products. This year’s slogan, Expressing Creativity, highlights the numerous creative applications for Felix Schoeller products which visitors will have the opportunity to experience at the company’s stand.

S-RACE Photo Panel Pro 120 – a product from the S-RACE Dye sublimation papers segment

A jointly developed product is the outcome of the close business relationship between the Felix Schoeller Group and ChromaLuxe, the leading brand in sublimation media on metal. They will be premiered at this year’s FESPA. S-RACE Photo Panel Pro 120 is a high-quality dye sublimation paper specifically designed for large-format ChromaLuxe panels. The result are images in HD photo quality with a wider colour gamut and deep non-cloudy blacks. The dye sublimation paper guarantees not only impressive results: it is also highly reliable and easy to use.

In addition to the new product born out of this collaboration with ChromaLuxe, visitors to the show can also experience other S-RACE dye sublimation papers by the Felix Schoeller Group. The portfolio includes papers for use on textiles and hard substrates in areas such as fashion, sportswear, home decor and interior design, merchandising, signage, photo gifts and photo panels.

New expressive specialties in the wallpaper and posters paper segment

STYLine nonwoven wallpapers were specially designed for the very latest digital printing technologies. In conjunction with its partners, the Felix Schoeller Group has developed new and exciting specialities in this range and will be showcasing them at FESPA. They include self-adhesive, metallic and embossed digital nonwoven wallpapers that leave no doubt about the fact that there simply are no limits to creativity. The new SLP matt papers for large-format prints also illustrate that: glossy and satin finishes currently dominate the solvent and latex paper market; with their impressive matt finish, SLP matt papers offer an interesting alternative.

Expressing Creativity with René Turrek

The Felix Schoeller Group’s collaboration with the Osnabrück-based urban artist René Turrek demonstrates the creative possibilities the company’s products offer. His art works on different materials are on display at the company’s stand: from wallpaper and large-format posters through to dye sublimation applications. Turrek is thrilled about the variety of Felix Schoeller media and the creative opportunities they open up.

Retailers Respond To Administration’s Threat To Raise Tariffs

WASHINGTON — May 5, 2019 — The National Retail Federation (NRF) issued the following statement from Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French in response to the President’s threat to raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese foods from 10 to 25 percent.

“Tariffs are taxes paid by American businesses and consumers, not by China. A sudden tariff increase with less than a week’s notice would severely disrupt U.S. businesses, especially small companies that have limited resources to mitigate the impact. If the administration follows through on this threat, American consumers will face higher prices and U.S. jobs will be lost.

“We want to see meaningful changes in China’s trade practices, but it makes no sense to punish Americans as a negotiating tactic. If the administration wants to put more pressure on China, it should form a multinational coalition with our allies who share our concerns. We urge the administration to reconsider this tax hike on Americans and stay at the bargaining table until a deal is reached.”

  • A report from Trade Partnership found that increasing tariffs on $200 billion of goods to 25 percent, coupled with tariffs already in place and retaliation, would reduce U.S. employment by over 934,000 jobs, cost the average family of four $767 and reduce U.S. GDP by 0.37 percent.
  • Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, the nationwide grassroots campaign against tariffs, will host a town hall tomorrow in Cleveland, Ohio at the 2019 Great Lakes Economic Forum. During the event, Ohio business owners and farmers will discuss the impact of tariffs on the state’s economy.

Techtextil 2019 Exhibitor Preview: BASF

LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany — May 6, 2019 — At the international trade fair for technical textiles and nonwovens from May 14–17, 2019, in Frankfurt, BASF will be showing its expertise in fabrics, films, nonwovens, yarns and hot-melt adhesives — all based on Elastollan®, the company’s thermoplastic polyurethane. Due to its high elasticity and excellent mechanical strength, the plastic is suitable for the production of a wide range of materials for the textile industry.
Elastollan is not only excellent for breathable and water-vapor-permeable membranes, but also for highly tear-resistant fabrics, such as those needed in the construction industry. Roof underlays made of Elastollan, for example, are durable and have a particularly high tear strength. In addition, they are characterized by the fact that they are perfect for bonding and welding.

Similar properties are also important in the use of Elastollan in medical films. For example, the new opaque film type Elastollan SP 818 combines very high water vapor permeability with good adhesion and processing properties, especially for blown film extrusion.
Also on show at Techtextil 2019 will be Elastollan-coated polyester and polyether fibers, whose uses include processing into UV-resistant, highly flexible fabrics for shading systems or leisure furniture. The fibers are characterized by their flexibility, high mechanical strength and tear resistance.

To demonstrate its expertise as a supplier of integrated solutions for TPU and TPU-based adhesives, BASF will be showcasing two further products at the trade fair. Elastollan Bondura is a TPU for solvent-based adhesives and extrusion coatings. It can be used as a base polymer for single-component adhesives or in combination with cross-linking agents. Elastollan Hotbond is a TPU for hot-melt adhesives. The melt flow index can be adapted according to the type.

At Techtextil, BASF will also present the full suite of Freeflex™ fiber spun from Elastollan® TPU. From rigid fibers to soft and elastic material, different materials will be displayed at the event. Each fiber is able to fulfill different applications — from shoe upper to apparel and even anti-run upholstery. For consumers, it ensures an impeccable fit thanks to its enormous stretch and recovery. The material also enables design freedom with its versatility in colours and textures provided and is also sustainable.

Free flex™ has inspired the fashion label Seven Crash (USA) and resulted in a collaboration with BASF. The resulting collection “Quantus” stands for the combination of fashionable design and high functionality and was shown this year at the New York Fashion Week. As a highlight, visitors of the Techtextil can try on a jacket from the collection and convince themselves of the high quality.

In addition, further exhibits will be shown at our booth, including an engine encapsulation with natural fibers from a cooperation with our partner Greiner Perfoam GmbH and a lightweight automotive roof frame from a cooperation with our partner IAC Group. Further exhibits include glass nonwovens for exhaust air treatment of lacquer cabins and glass meshes for the reinforcement of plaster and insulation systems.

Devan Chemicals, HUUB Announce Partnership

RONSE, Belgium — May 6, 2019 — Devan Chemicals and triathlon and performance brand HUUB announce their partnership at the upcoming Performance Days show in Munich. The two companies have been working on a project around Devan’s cool comfort technology Moov&Cool. The unique formulation, applied to HUUB’s trisuits, was tested and examined by Dr. Faulkner, head of sports engineering at Nottingham Trent University, who has now put forward his first findings. Competing in triathlons in hot and humid conditions is often challenging due to the additional environmental stress placed on the athlete. When you compete in triathlon you produce heat as a result of the increase in metabolic rate required to meet the elevated energy demand due to swimming, cycling and running.

This heat needs to be removed from the body, as if too much heat builds up inside your body, it can have a dramatic effect on your performance. At the very least it will cause you to feel uncomfortable and to slow down, or worse; think of Jonny Brownlee, who collapsed from dehydration at the end of the World Triathlon Series race in Cozumel in 2016. In races that are frequently very hot, such as Ironman Hawaii and races in Asia, optimizing your heat tolerance is critical to performance. Most people will know about the impact of acclimatizing to the heat before race day, but one often overlooked component is an athlete’s clothing, and the technology within that fabric that can help to keep you cool.

Evaporative cooling effect

This is why HUUB recently teamed up with Devan, who has developed a unique multisport formulation with the Moov&Cool technology at its core. It helps to maximize the evaporative cooling effect of sweating during exercise. One of the key mechanisms through which we can lose heat during sport is via sweating. When sweat is evaporated, heat will be drawn from the body to cool you down, which will help to prevent you from overheating and slowing down. The Moov&Cool technology contains a continuous heat absorption capacity that can assist in the heat withdrawal process. This heat absorption capacity also continues to work in wet environments, thus also ideal for triathlon.

In collaboration with Dr Steve Faulkner, Head of Sports Engineering at Nottingham Trent University, HUUB conducted an independent study to test the impact of the formulation on triathlete’ responses to exercise in warm conditions (25°C) whilst wearing either a standard Huub Anemoi tri-suit compared to a coated Anemoi suit.

Exciting results

HUUB now states that they have found some really exciting results allowing the company to continue to improve the athlete’s performance. As claimed by Devan, they saw a positive impact on body core temperature as well as on heart rate. Athletes reported feeling less hot and more comfortable during exercise whilst wearing a coated suit. Even more importantly, athletes experienced a reduction in the overall physiological strain during the 60-minute ride. In turn this could lead to a faster finish time on race day.

“I was not expecting to see such benefits to athletes’ perceptions and physiological function,” says Dr Faulkner. “There are many coatings that claim to have ‘performance gains’ which are often unsubstantiated so I was somewhat sceptical at first. However, the data we have collected point to a measurable benefit of having your tri-suit coated with the Moov&Cool technology that could lead to significant improvement to your race-day performance.”

HUUB will do further research with Dr. Faulkner and Devan to have more insight on how this polymer treatment can impact the sports performance. They will look at some of the underlying physiological mechanism that could be affected such as alterations to blood flow, heat storage in the body and the effectiveness of athletes’ sweating. We will keep you posted on the results.
