UniFirst Corp. Continues Hygienically Clean Food Safety Certification Commitment

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — December 18, 2019 — UniFirst Corp.’s Richmond, Va., laundry has recently achieved Hygienically Clean Food Safety certification and three of its plants — Bangor, Maine, Kernersville, N.C., and Richmond — have qualified to renew their certifications. These Hygienically Clean Food Safety certifications reflect UniFirst’s commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and its capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing. UniFirst currently has 58 laundries that have earned this certification; its locations are — one in each state except where noted: Ala.; Ariz.; five in Calif.; Colo.; Conn.; four in Fla.; two in Ga.; Ill.; Kan.; La.; two in Mass.; two in Md.; Maine; four each in Mich., Mont. and N.C.; two in N.H.; two in N.J.; Nev.; two in N.Y.; Ohio; Okla.; Ore.; two in Pa.; two in S.C.; eight in Texas; Utah; Va.; Wash.; and Wis. Canadian provinces represented are Alberta (two) and British Columbia.

The Hygienically Clean Food Safety certification confirms the laundry’s dedication to compliance and processing garments and linens using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, the focal point for inspectors’ evaluation of critical control points (CCPs) that minimize risk. The independent, third-party inspection must confirm essential evidence that:

  • Employees are properly trained and protected;
  • Managers understand legal requirements;
  • OSHA-compliant; and
  • Physical plant operates effectively.

To maintain their certification, laundry plants must pass quarterly testing of outcome-based microbial testing, indicating that their processes are producing Hygienically Clean garments and other reusable textiles with diminished presence of harmful bacteria. Testing ensures that as laundry conditions change, such as water quality, textile fabric composition and wash chemistry, laundered product quality is consistently maintained. This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for animal processing, dairies, fruit/vegetable, bakeries, grain and other food and beverage industry segments.

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) practices are examined in the Hygienically Clean Food Safety inspection process, evaluating the plant’s techniques for:

  • Conducting hazard analysis;
  • Determining CCPs, monitoring their control, correcting them if not under control;
  • Validating and verifying HACCP system effectiveness; and
  • Documenting and record-keeping to show ongoing conformance.

On-site inspections also evaluate practices relevant to handling and processing textile products used in food manufacturing/processing establishments for adherence to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) directives. Introduced in 2014, Hygienically Clean Food Safety brought to North America the international cleanliness standards for laundering garments and other textile products for food manufacturing used worldwide by the Certification Association for Professional Textile Services and the European Committee for Standardization.

“More and more, we’re seeing our customers in food-related industries looking for third-party validation that our specialized Product Protection Process and our Hygienically Clean standards are consistent with HACCP and GFSI guidelines,” said Adam Soreff, director of marketing and communications at UniFirst Corp., Wilmington, Mass. “Working with a Hygienically Clean Food Safety certified laundry helps reassure them that their managed uniform program is working in concert with their own food-safety protocols to help them ensure food safety for consumers.”

The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) Lauds Expected House Passage Of USMCA

WASHINGTON — December 19, 2019 — The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), representing the full spectrum of U.S. textiles from fiber though finished sewn products, issued the following statement regarding the expected passage today of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) by the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Passage of the USMCA in the House today will mark a significant step forward in advancing the trade deal through Congress and we urge the Senate to pass it swiftly,” said NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas. “Mexico and Canada are the two largest export markets for the U.S. textile industry, totaling nearly $12 billion last year, and several provisions in USMCA will help producers expand and build new business in the critical Western Hemisphere supply chain.”

NCTO worked with the administration during negotiations on USMCA and successfully lobbied for several provisions and improvements that were subsequently incorporated in the trade deal that will close loopholes and strengthen U.S. Customs enforcement.

“We expect U.S. textile companies to export more to the region and invest more in the U.S. when USMCA is implemented,” Glas said. “Textile executives from North Carolina to New York have said they will seek to take advantage of the modifications in the trade deal and build new business in areas such as pocketing and sewing thread, as a result of stronger rules of origin and Customs enforcement.”

The USMCA updates and modifies the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and makes significant improvements, including:

  • Creation of a separate chapter for textiles and apparel rules of origin with strong customs enforcement language.
  • Stronger rules of origin for sewing thread, pocketing, narrow elastics and certain coated fabrics.  Under the current NAFTA, these items can be sourced from outside the region – USMCA fixes this loophole and ensures these secondary components are originating to the region.
  • Fixes the Kissell Amendment Buy American loophole, ensuring that a significant amount the Department of Homeland Security spends annually on clothing and textiles for the Transportation Security Administration is spent on domestically produced products.

This release follows NCTO’s previous endorsement of the deal reached between House Democrats and the administration last week.

NCTO is a Washington-based trade association that represents domestic textile manufacturers, including artificial and synthetic filament and fiber producers.

  • U.S. employment in the textile supply chain was 594,147 in 2018.
  • The value of shipments for U.S. textiles and apparel was $76.8 billion in 2018.
  • U.S. exports of fiber, textiles and apparel were $30.1 billion in 2018.
  • Capital expenditures for textile and apparel production totaled $2.0 billion in 2017, the last year for which data is available.

Designed with HanesBrands’ innovative SmoothTec fabric technology, the collection offers ultra-thin fabric that makes the garments virtually invisible under clothing and delivers 360-degree stretch and recovery that allow garments to flex to fit women’s unique bodies, maintain their shape and eliminate ride-up. The addition of the company’s Cool Comfort technology means that the fabric also wicks moisture for added comfort.

Bali EasyLite panties are being launched in hi-cut and brief styles in sizes up to 2XL and the EasyLite shape cami also is offered in sizes through 2XL.

“Bali’s EasyLite collection caters to the specific needs of all women with innovative, feminine designs that are functional and affordable while addressing two of the top undergarment complaints: lines and comfort,” said Maria Teza, vice president and general manager, Bali intimate apparel. “We are excited to expand the EasyLite collection, which offers women intimate apparel that supports their active lifestyles with total comfort.”

The introduction of EasyLite panties and shapewear follows the May 2019 introduction of Bali’s EasyLite wirefree bra featuring no hardware and sizes up to 3XL (46DD). During its first six months, the bra has quickly become one of Bali’s top-10 most popular styles. Additional growth is projected in 2020 as new colors are introduced.

“The launch of our EasyLite bra has been one of the most successful to date and by adding panties and shapewear, we are providing women with total comfort for their every need,” she added. “And we’re delivering on our company’s Innovate to Elevate strategy for growth.”

Hanes’ innovation strategy is to use the capabilities of its large-scale global supply chain and brand strength to offer enhanced products at an accessible price for large numbers of consumers.

Bali EasyLite panties retail for $13 per pair or three pairs for $33. Same as the collection’s bras, the panties are offered in the brand’s TruShade color palette, which delivers an inclusive range of shades to complement women of varying skin tones.

The shape cami is being offered in four colors — nude, black, sandshell and white — and retails for $44.

Both the panty and shapewear cami lines are available now across the nation in Kohl’s, Macy’s, JC Penney and other department stores, as well as online at OneHanesPlace and Amazon.
