Borealis To Gain International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) For All Its European Polyolefin Production Sites

VIENNA, Austria — December 3, 2020 — Borealis has gained ISCC PLUS certification for its Porvoo (Finland), Schwechat (Austria), Kallo and Beringen (Belgium) polyolefin (PO) production sites, and is aiming to have its sites at Stenungsund (Sweden) and Burghausen (Germany) certified by the first quarter of 2021. Borealis’ Porvoo location, which recently commissioned a cavern to store its conventional and renewable feedstock, is the latest site to gain this certification. A certification audit was completed at Stenungsund this October, and there is one planned for certification at Burghausen later this year.

A global standard for recycled and bio-based materials, ISCC PLUS provides traceability along the supply chain, verifying companies to meet specific environmental and social standards, creating a chain of custody. This enables Borealis to certify its mass balanced production of renewable feedstock, as well as chemically recycled feedstock, with a mass balance approach crucial to transitioning towards a more circular economy of the chemical industry. It is a development that puts into practice the aims of Borealis’ EverMinds™ platform, which is committed to moving from a linear to circular economy through innovation and collaboration.

ISCC PLUS certification also enables Borealis to produce and offer renewable PO — the Bornewables™ range of circular products — and renewable hydrocarbons, such as ethylene, propylene, C4s, phenol and acetone, to the market for the first time. And as a result of certifying each of its production sites, Borealis can progress with its large pipeline of projects to drive the transition to a circular economy: supplier contracts can be finalised, and customer contracts for feedstock explored. This is another step in implementing the pledges Borealis made to stakeholders that by 2025 100 percent of the consumer products and solutions shall be made of recyclable, reusable or with renewable content.

To accelerate the transition towards a circular economy, it is essential that customers, brand owners, and other parts of the supply chain, also look to adopt ISCC PLUS certification. The chain of custody it enables is the best way to provide the market with sustainable products, and the potential of this approach is dependent on industry-wide collaboration. To gain certification, Borealis set up a dedicated team to ensure the necessary processes and procedures were implemented at site locations and at group level.

Innovatec Commissions Second Oerlikon Nonwoven Meltblown System

NEUMÜNSTER/TROISDORF, Germany — December 3, 2020 — Just a few days ago, the second newly-delivered Oerlikon Nonwoven meltblown system was commissioned at Innovatec’s state-of-the-art machine park. With it, the nonwovens manufacturer — based in Troisdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia — immediately started producing polypropylene filter nonwovens: in particular for use in protective face masks, which have been increasingly in demand since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and whose domestic manufacture is being supported by the German Government. Here, the highly-efficient Oerlikon Nonwoven meltblown technology from Neumünster is supporting the production of these highly-effective filter media.

“Back in June 2020, Oerlikon Nonwoven delivered the first so-called 2-beam system to Innovatec,” reported Rainer Straub, head of Oerlikon Nonwoven. Together with the second production line, the Troisdorf-based enterprise has been able to almost double its filter nonwoven output to date. The North Rhine-Westphalian company now has filter media production capacities that can be used to manufacture up to 2.5 billion operating room filter masks or a billion highly-effective FFP2 masks per year.

The, according to its own information, leading manufacturer of meltblown mask nonwovens in Europe is participating in the German Government’s ‘Nonwovens Production’ grant program to ramp up its output capacities and has for this reason already received a visit from top German politicians, including Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier and North Rhine-Westphalia Minister President Armin Laschet. Together, politicians and industry want to ensure that the production capacities for protective equipment continue to grow in Germany and that above all critical supply chains are secured at both national and European levels. And companies such as Innovatec and Oerlikon Nonwoven are actively contributing towards this.

INDA Releases New North American Nonwovens Industry Outlook Report

Kaman Expands Composite Repair To The Aftermarket Through Partnership With C&L Aerospace

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. — December 1, 2020 — Kaman Composites – Wichita Inc., an indirect subsidiary of Kaman Corp., announced today the expansion of its composite repair services to the business jet aftermarket with industry leading MRO provider and distributor, C&L Aerospace, a C&L Aviation Group Company of Bangor, Maine. Kaman Composites named C&L Aerospace its exclusive distributor for composite structural repairs out of its FAA Part 145 Repair Station in Wichita, Kan.

“Historically, Kaman Composites has provided structural repair exclusively for military programs,” explained Malissa Nesmith, senior director of Business Development for Kaman Composites. “However, this collaboration with C&L expands our repair services into the business aviation aftermarket, which we are looking forward to supporting.”

Applied Nanoscience To Commence U.S.-Based Production Of NanoFense™ Formulation In The Fight Against COVID-19

LAS VEGAS — December 1, 2020 — Applied Nanoscience Inc. (ANI), a nanotechnology-based air filtration performance company, today announced that construction of a pilot plant has begun in Downs, Kan., with direct participation of the Kansas Department of Commerce.
