Finisterre lead Designer A. Todd, designed the water repellent and windproof BioSmock to be deliberately functional following the performance direction of the company’s pioneering B Corp business platform. The outer shell of the garment is made with new PrimaLoft BIO woven technology, a PFC-free synthetic material woven by Amaterrace of Japan, which is biodegradable on land and in the sea.

The insulating layer is provided by HD Wool in the form of a wool/PLA compound that also decomposes safely in marine environments when microbes are introduced. HD Wool Active Insulation uses a blend of non-Merino wool known for its greater physical durability. Culp Thanks Healthcare Workers With Lunches And Gifts

HIGH POINT, N.C. — February 9, 2021 — Culp Inc. partnered with REAL Kitchen & Market, a local High Point caterer, to deliver boxed lunches and gifts to three area hospitals.

“It’s been difficult to watch the effects this pandemic has had on the morale of the staff in the MICU,” said Scott West, Nurse Manager at Wake Forest Baptist Health. “We have known this pandemic was going to be a marathon, not a sprint, but I don’t think any of us thought we would still be fighting the battle for nine months and counting. Support like this from the community means so much to the staff.”

COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of everyone in some way, and Culp Inc. is no exception. When the pandemic first began, Culp, an upholstery and mattress textile company pivoted its operations to manufacture masks and other health-related textile products. Since then, implementing and monitoring COVID safety protocols has been paramount in keeping the company’s manufacturing facilities operating. This ongoing task falls under the leadership of Teresa Huffman, senior vice president of human resources for Culp, and mother of an Intensive Care Unit nurse.

Aware that after the holidays the number of COVID ICU patients was increasing and concerned that public support for healthcare workers was waning, Huffman wanted to find a way for Culp to show its appreciation.

Knowing that everyone enjoys a free lunch, Culp called on Lisa Wheatley, president and owner of REAL Kitchen & Market to partner with the company in this effort. “It was exciting to be a part of this project,” said Wheatley. “The medical staffs of the Intensive Care Units have been working with the most dire COVID cases day in and day out for months on end. I can’t imagine the toll it must take on them. It was nice to have the opportunity to show our gratitude for their hard work and dedication.”

In total, 145 boxed lunches and wristlet bags made from Culp fabric were delivered to the Cone Health COVID-19 Green Valley Campus, the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, and the Intensive Care Unit at Baptist Health High Point Medical Center.

“It was an honor to meet these dedicated healthcare workers,” said Jenny Barnhill of Culp. “After the gifts had been given and our gratitude expressed, watching them walk back into the hospital to continue their shifts and keep fighting the good fight was truly a humbling experience.”

Successful Start-Up Of Papel Aralar’s PM 5 For Sustainable Wet Wipes 

EGELSBACH, Germany — February 9, 2021 — Voith and the nonwoven fabric expert Truetzschler Nonwovens have delivered a new system for specialty paper production to the Spanish paper factory Papel Aralar. In December, the PM 5 successfully started up and is now stably producing adult and baby wet wipes that are completely plastic-free, flushable and biodegradable, a characteristic that conventional wet wipes do not have. With the recent investment, Aralar now has two WLS lines with a total production capacity of 45,000 tons per year.

The HydroFormer, which is one of the main components of the new system, draws on Voith’s extensive experience in the papermaking and pulp industries. With this technology, the suspension is heavily diluted to produce nonwoven materials made completely of cellulose, a renewable resource. Besides the HydroFormer, Voith has supplied the BlueLine stock preparation, a master reel, and the wet end process for the new system.

Truetzschler Nonwovens completes the production line with the well-proven AquaJet in an innovative configuration for hydroentangling (spunlacing) and an energy-efficient multi-drum dryer. The many years of expertise and experience of the Truetzschler company form the basis of the web bonding and drying components that have been adapted to the needs of the wet-laid process.

AkzoNobel Opens New R&D Lab Dedicated To Low Cure Powder Coatings

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands — February 5, 2021 — A new research center which will develop pioneering products for the rapidly growing area of powderon wood has been opened by AkzoNobel at its site in Como, Italy.

The new R&D facility — which features an application lab, process lab, and analytical and testing lab is dedicated to delivering low cure powder coatings for use on heat-sensitive substrates such as MDF, plywood, thermoplastics and composites.

Its inauguration follows the recent acquisition of Stahl’s powder coatings activities, which gave AkzoNobel access to a broad range of solutions, including unique UV technology. The Como center will now focus on developing an expanding portfolio of low cure solutions, including low bake, UV and ultra-low bake (ULB) powder technologies. This will enable customers to use less energy during production, gain process speed and boost their own sustainability profile.

“We’re excited to build on our global leadership position and enter new markets while bringing more surfaces to life for our customers,” explained Daniela Vlad, director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. “In addition to strengthening our position as a technology leader, the new facility will also help to accelerate our speed to market so we can reach our customers even faster.”

She added that this is only the first phase of the company’s expansion into powder on wood, with plans in place to open additional R&D centers in Asia and North America.
