Life Cycle Assessment Demonstrates BASF’s Man-Made Leather Solution Haptex® Has Environmental Benefits

SHANGHAI, China — September 21, 2021 — A comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of BASF’s man-made leather solution Haptex® demonstrates the significant environmental benefits compared to other conventional synthetic leather solutions. The LCA was conducted by Intertek — a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide.

“By commissioning an LCA at such an early stage, we are enabling life cycle considerations to be factored in the manufacturing process. This supports OEMs and their customers such as footwear, automotive, and furniture brands in determining the right material — such as Haptex, which demonstrated significant environmental benefits — for their next innovation,” said Yunlong Ma, general manager, Green Initiatives, Intertek.

The LCA study is based on a total value chain analysis of Haptex from its chemical production to the finished leather goods. The performance on greenhouse effect, cumulative energy demand, and water consumption figures were also calculated and measured.

The LCA study shows that Haptex outperformed synthetic leathers from solvent- based and waterborne-based man-made leather processes, in terms of carbon emissions. For instance, Haptex was proven to produce 52-percent less greenhouse gas

emissions than conventional synthetic leather, with more than a 20-percent reduction in energy consumption when using 1KG of chemicals for man-made leather production. This is predominantly due to eliminating the wet line from the production processes, which reduces 30-percent of water usage compared to usual solvent-based polyurethane production methods.

The results proved that Haptex is a more sustainable alternative for products made with man-made leather, such as automotive seatings, furniture, and footwear and fashion accessories like bags and caps.

Haptex possesses high peel strength, anti-yellowing, and high abrasion performance properties. Haptex also does not use any organotin catalysts or plasticizer.

In collaboration with Warren Synthetic Leather (Suzhou) Co. Ltd. and Suzhou Greentech Co. Ltd., the product has been further optimized to increase its performance, yet meets stringent VOC standards.

“The report comes at a time when pressure mounts on brands and OEMs to make stronger efforts towards sustainability by choosing alternative and animal-free leather for their products. Therefore, we must provide concrete information on environmental emissions and how we are reducing the CO2 footprint to our customers. With this study, Haptex has proven that it is more sustainable compared to other conventional synthetic leather solutions, and at the same time can fulfill the different conventional requirements from OEMs and brands to produce products that are durable, stylish and eco-conscious,” said Minli Zhao, vice president, Consumer Industry, Performance Materials Asia Pacific, BASF.

Spinnova Receives Climate Leadership Coalition’s Carbon Handprint Recognition

HELSINKI — September 21, 2021 — To celebrate the Zero emissions day today, the Climate Leadership Coalition (CLC) in Finland launched the world’s first Carbon Handprint Recognition. One of the two recognitions was given to Spinnova’s textile fiber innovation that, compared to cotton, saves as much as 65 percent of CO2 emissions.

Climate Leadership Coalition has today given out ”The most climate positive product” recognition for the first time, as part of the Zero emissions day started in 2017. The innovation recognition for great potential in carbon footprint was given to the textile fibre that Spinnova has developed to e.g. replace cotton use in textile products. The greenhouse gas emissions of cotton production globally is estimated to be more than 50 million metric tons CO2e. According to pre-commercial scale calculations, the carbon footprint of Spinnova’s fibre is 65 percent smaller than cotton’s*.

“Continuous improvement of our carbon handprint is a big deal to us; one that’s been considered from the very start. A climate friendly product must absolutely also be produced with minimal impact,” said Spinnova’s Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder Juha Salmela.

The other recognition was given to the most climate positive carbon handprint product, Neste’s NesteMY Renewable Diesel™, that helps reduce motoring emissions by as much as 90 percent compared to fossil fuels.

The Zero emission day’s mission is to give the planet a day off from fossil emissions and add awareness of the drawbacks of carbon emissions. The theme day’s goal is to inspire people to make climate friendly choices in their personal everyday lives. In 2021, the event was held in collaboration with the Finnish city of Lahti, the EU Green Capital 2021.

Climate Leadership Coalition is Europe’s largest non-profit climate business network. The market value of CLC’s corporate members represents almost 70 percent of companies listed in the Helsinki stock exchange. CLC members believe that the societal transformation towards a sustainable economy and consumption is not only possible, but also financially profitable.

Growing the positive impact; carbon handprint, is becoming an essential goal for companies, and many CLC members have already defined a metered carbon handprint for their products and services.

Wrangler® Launches Its Most Sustainable Denim Yet, Featuring Planet-Friendly Fiber Made from Textile Waste

GREENSBORO, N. C.  — September 20, 2021 — Wrangler®, a global icon in jeanswear and casual apparel, today announced that it has teamed up with Infinited Fiber Co. to incorporate Infinna™ — regenerated, recyclable fibers — into its global denim range for its Fall 2021 collection, the brand’s most sustainable denim yet. Combined with industry-leading innovations including Indigood™, foam-dye technology that lowers wastewater by more than 99 percent, and an e-flow finishing process, this collection represents Wrangler’s next steps in circularity, water reduction and reduced environmental impact.

“Wrangler is committed to continually pushing the sustainability standards for denim,” said Dhruv Agarwal, senior director, Innovation, Sustainability, and Product Development, Kontoor Brands. “We believe our work with Infinited Fiber Company and the introduction of Infinna once again raises the bar in terms of environmental performance of our denim products without compromising the comfort and quality consumers expect from Wrangler. The introduction of Infinna is an additional fiber complement to cotton and an important step forward in the commercialization and adoption of circularity in the apparel supply chain.”

The shared journey to a circular future for textiles began for Wrangler and Infinited Fiber Co. in 2015, when the commercial viability of Infinited Fiber’s technology was first being evaluated and Wrangler began its pursuit of circularity. As Infinited Fiber built their technology and company, Wrangler’s Innovation Team was among the first to see the innovation’s potential, helping Infinited Fiber understand the industry’s technical requirements for the fiber and completing preliminary tests and trials on fabrics made with Infinna. The Wrangler brand’s steadfast commitment to a more circular supply chain and Infinited Fiber’s superior process technology brought this truly unique denim fabric to life over six years.

“We are grateful to the Wrangler Innovation Team for their long-term support, for being one of the early adaptors of Infinna and for turning our innovation into a beautiful denim that will unlock a new level of circularity in the textile industry,” said Petri Alava, CEO and co-founder, Infinited Fiber Co.

Responsible Fiber

Infinna is a premium fiber with a similar feel to the soft-yet-durable cotton of traditional denim, but is created from textile waste. This means clothing and textiles that already exist can be recycled repeatedly, saving them from landfill, and decreasing the reliance on “virgin” fiber. Conventional cotton production is known for its extensive water and pesticide consumption, while Infinna can be produced with a fraction of the water using responsible chemistry.

Industry-Leading, Sustainable Production

Building on Wrangler’s commitment to circularity, water savings and reduced environmental impact of its apparel, the Infinited Blue FW21 collection is created from fabric made from Infinna fibers and features Wrangler’s Indigood and e-flow innovations designed to significantly reduce water, energy and chemical use. Indigood Foam-Dye entirely replaces the traditional water vats and chemical baths of conventional indigo dyeing, reducing wastewater by more than 99 percent. In addition, the brand has adopted an e-flow technology that uses “nano bubbles” to distribute chemical products more efficiently during the finishing process of the fabric, resulting in a lower environmental impact.

The Infinited Blue collection includes signature pieces from Wrangler’s 70-plus year history – the men’s Western jacket (124MJ) and men’s Western jeans (11MWZ). The Infinited Blue FW21 ICONS jeans and jacket are available online.

DICKIES® Launches United by Good Work Campaign

FORT WORTH, Texas — September 20, 2021 — As part of Dickies’ commitment to championing the dignity of work, the leading global workwear brand has launched its latest multimedia marketing campaign, United by Good Work. Building upon 2020’s United by Inspiration campaign, which reflected the world’s state of isolation and a craving of unity through inspiration, this fall’s United by Good Work celebrates joy and hope as communities come together again by shining a light on the good work that has been accomplished and the good work to come.

United by Good Work focuses on three purpose-driven communities that are creating meaningful change and celebrating the joys of working together again by nurturing others, addressing basic human needs, and challenging the current system:

  • Alma Backyard Farms was inspired by juvenile offenders and prisoners eager to transform their lives and communities by giving back to the communities they took from and were taken away from. Alma addresses the issue that people experiencing incarceration have limited opportunities to see and interact with nature and very few opportunities to nurture others.
  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (Habitat LA) believes that everyone needs a safe, decent, affordable place to live regardless of any views or other distinctions that too often divide us. Shelter is a basic human need and Habitat LA seeks to eliminate substandard housing by making decent, sustainable, and affordable housing a reality.
  • 11:11 Creative Collective is a woman-led art and culture non-profit that partners with artists and the arts community to develop and execute accessible public art installations and arts-related educational programming. 11:11 believes the arts are humanity’s loudest voice and the organization works to facilitate its preservation.

“We’ve all had a lot of time to reflect and, although the past year has not been easy, as a society we’re emerging with a new sense of appreciation,” said Denny Bruce, Global Brand president, Dickies. “At Dickies, we can’t think of a better way to apply that appreciation than by celebrating these communities that are united by good work.”

Dickies partnered with global creative house, Dazed, to produce United by Good Work, which will launch through a multi-platform marketing campaign that includes global digital, social media and custom content that personifies communities doing good work.
