LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany — June 21, 2022 — BASF will present its journey to advance towards the goal of a circular economy at K 2022 trade fair, which is the #1 trade fair for plastics and rubber. K 2022 takes place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from October 19 – 26, 2022, celebrating its 70th anniversary. BASF has been exhibiting at K ever since the trade fair debuted back in 1952, continuously showing its commitment to the plastics industry and ability to create breakthroughs together with its customers 
“At K 2022, our theme is ‘Go!Create – Welcome to Our Plastics Journey’,” says Dr. Martin Jung, President Performance Materials, “We invite all visitors to join our journey towards a sustainable future with plastics. We will show products and solutions and more than that we want to give insights in our concepts and plans.

The Plastics Journey towards a more sustainable economy needs a co-operative approach and this has a long way to go. That’s what we want to express.” The Plastics Journey consists of three phases which represent the lifecycle of plastics: MAKE, USE, and RECYCLE. BASF offers market-leading products and solutions for all three phases of this journey.

“We will demonstrate our capabilities and thoughts at K 2022 exhibiting numerous co-creation projects with partners and customers from industries like Automotive, Construction, E&E, Packaging, and Consumer,” Jung adds, “These projects range from products that have net-zero or low Product Carbon Footprints to new products made from recycled raw materials to conserve fossil raw materials. As an integrated company with our own base chemical production, we are a key enabler in helping our customers decarbonize their value chains.” BASF has committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030 and reaching net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Another strong focus will be on digital and data-driven value chain models that help BASF’s customers transform towards a CO2 neutral future. In this area, BASF has introduced an industry-leading digital application to calculate the CO2 emissions of around 45,000 BASF sales products.

MAKE: BASF solutions improve how plastics are made

“The MAKE phase is about improving how plastics are made – from product design to the choice of raw materials and the manufacturing process itself,” explains Jung. At K 2022, BASF will present solutions to track and reduce the Product Carbon Footprint along the entire value chain of different industries. For example, BASF is a member of Catena-X, a collaborative effort of the automotive industry to build a data driven ecosystem.

BASF will also showcase a number of solutions to reduce the Product Carbon Footprint using renewable or recycled feedstock like in the case of the Styrenics portfolio in packaging and construction. BASF’s biomass balance certified materials are also used by customers from the furniture industry or by a safety shoe brand offering a carbon neutral safety shoe containing BASF’s biomass balance polyurethane certified according to REDcert2. Another example how plastics and thereby consumer products can be manufactured more sustainably are outdoor pants made of raw materials obtained via the chemical recycling of end-of-life tires using BASF’s Ultramid® Ccycled™.

USE: BASF solutions improve the performance of plastics

“Plastics come with many sustainability benefits,” emphasizes Jung, “In the USE phase of their lifecycle, plastics play out all their strengths: by improving energy efficiency through their light weight, by prolonging product lifecycles thanks to their robustness and peak performance, and by enabling more sustainable applications in sectors such as e-mobility and household appliances.”

At K 2022, BASF will show several examples of plastics being true performance materials for sustainability: from safe and durable polyamides for high-voltage components within the e-mobility charging infrastructure to enabling a green miniature circuit breaker (MCB) for the E&E business that uses a 100% recycled PA6 based compound using pyrolysis oil from end-of-life tires – without any compromise on the MCB’s robustness. BASF plastics also help improve energy efficiency, for example for customers in the refrigeration industry that face high requirements to achieve the highest energy label.

RECYCLE: BASF solutions improve the recycling methods of plastics

“The crucial question about plastics is what happens to them at the end of their life,” emphasizes Dr. Martin Jung, “To achieve a circular economy, we need to get much better at the recycling of plastics to close the loop.”

To advance the RECYCLE phase of the Plastics Journey, BASF offers several product packages that pursue and expand all existing recycling methods. While the BASF subsidiary trinamiX offers innovative mobile near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy solutions for sorting and identifying different types of plastic waste, BASF’s IrgaCycle™ is a new range of additive solutions that improves the mechanical recycling of plastics. For chemical recycling, BASF offers a variety of products containing raw materials obtained via ChemCycling™. To complete the recycling methods, the BASF booth also features the certified compostable biopolymer ecovio®: It supports organic recycling of food waste and food-soiled packaging thus increasing the diversion of food waste from landfill and incineration.

To offer all visitors insights into the co-creation process with customers and partners and to take them along the Plastics Journey, BASF will host a series of daily ‘Creator Talks’ at its booth. Opening The Door To Bio-Based Nonwovens In Reusable Textiles – Kelheim Fibres Wins Techtextil Innovation Award

KELHEIM, Germany — June 21, 2022 — The renowned viscose specialities manufacturer Kelheim Fibres has won the Techtextil Award in the “New Concept” category for their project “Cellulose-based nonwovens for highly absorbent reusable products”.

This award is intended to make cutting-edge developments visible, promote unconventional thinking and intensify the dialogue between researchers, manufacturers, and users – and thus exactly matches the philosophy of the fibre expert.

Dr. Marina Crnoja-Cosic, Director New Business Development at Kelheim Fibres: “It is a great honour and pleasure for us to receive the Techtextil Award. We see the award not only as an acknowledgement for the project presented, but also as a recognition of our innovation strategy. Our open innovation concept aims at dialogue and the associated acceleration of the commercialisation of innovative solutions. In this specific example, it has been shown that together with our partners, the Saxony Textile Research Institute (STFI) and Sumo, we have been able to react faster and more specifically to current trends. Together we achieved a better result. By joining forces, we have developed a product that optimally combines performance and sustainability.”

The starting point for the innovation was the search for a washable and thus reusable absorbent pad made of completely bio-based materials for the cloth diaper of the Berlin-based start-up Sumo.

Two main requirements of the application are obvious: A fast and efficient liquid distribution and high absorbency should minimize rewetting and leakage. Both are ensured by specialty viscose fibres from Kelheim, which have been making this essential contribution to absorbent hygiene products such as tampons for many years.

The obvious solution was therefore to optimally utilize the synergies between knitted and woven structures with nonwovens.

In doing so, the advantages of nonwovens in combination with speciality viscose fibres in terms of absorbency (through e.g. more open-pored structures) have been perfectly transferred from the field of disposable to the world of reusable products. For reusable products, however, there is another challenge to overcome: they must remain stable during washing and over several cycles of use. To ensure this, an innovative nonwoven construction was developed in close cooperation with the STFI. These nonwovens can be used as a stand-alone solution or integrated into a textile structure.

In the Sumo cloth diaper, the liquid management of the absorbent pad sets new standards. The new solution combines the worlds of nonwovens and textiles and provides proof that high-performance reusable absorbent products can be developed without fossil materials.

Avgol® Wins Prestigious Innovation Award For Biotransformation Technology For Nonwovens

BANGKOK — June 21, 2022 — Avgol® has received the prestigious Innovation Award at the RIGHT Hygiene conference in recognition of its collaboration with Polymateria in development of pioneering biotransformation technology for nonwovens.

Mr. Sanjay Bhayani, Director of India Operations with Avgol, was presented with the award at the annual event held earlier this month in Delhi, India.

“End of life issues with products that are comprised of nonwoven fabrics are as complicated as they are numerous,” said Mr. Bhayani. “Used product wastes, whether the simplest wipe material, the most prolific face masks or the most complicated in the form of baby diapers, all utilize polymeric resins that have a high degree of inertness and stability but that are difficult to recycle and degrade. We at Avgol embraced this issue with our technology partners at Polymateria to bring a new type of solution to the market, specifically in the form of the biotransformation technology.”

Biotransformation is a unique functionality wherein a conventional nonwoven fabric can be modified to react to certain triggers to then begin a cascade, and importantly a fundamental chemical transformation of the polymer resin into a wax that is readily degraded by natural bacteria, microbes and fungi normally found in the environment.

“The transformation is triggered through the combined effects of the natural elements of decay – air, moisture, heat and sunlight,” said Mr. Bhayani. “Once triggered, the material will transform into a low molecular weight wax structure leaving no microplastics or toxic residue behind. Moreover, if the product comprising the biotransformation technology is disposed of in the normal way and facilities are available, then it can be recycled by readily available means.”

Mr. Bhayani said both he and the entire Avgol team were delighted and proud to receive the award, presented at the special ceremony at the closing of the event.

“By bringing the Biotransformation technology to the various potential markets in India, we hope to offer a real-world solution to waste management,” he said. “We particularly hope to address aspects of the creation of fugitive waste and remove this from the environment without causing additional, and potentially more dangerous, problems.”

This new addition to the Cargill RegenConnect portfolio furthers Cargill’s role in giving farmers access to emerging market opportunities within sustainable, traceable supply chains, opening doors to Cargill’s downstream customers looking to achieve their sustainable sourcing goals.

Cargill will offer one-year contracts to growers who have implemented cover crops and reduced-till or no-till practices since the Fall of 2021. Cotton growers can earn a premium for each pound of regeneratively-grown cotton contracted, produced and delivered to Cargill.  Eligible states include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.

Cargill has partnered with Regrow to make it easy for farmers to securely enter data to verify their use of regenerative agriculture practices through the Regrow MRV platform. Verification will be supported through in-field data, remote sensing and crop modeling.

The inclusion of safe raw materials within mattress manufacturing allows the materials to be easily disassembled at the product’s end of use in order to be further reused as same components or recycled into new raw material at the same quality level, to enable versatile textile applications.

Designed for disassembly to optimize the use of existing resources, reduce carbon footprint and support customer objectives all along their customers’ supply chain. The Heimtextil Summer Special, together with Techtextil and Texprocess heralds the re-launch of the global textile trade fairs in Frankfurt – finally enabling new international contacts, personal business encounters and intensive networking on site in Frankfurt. “Volatile energy costs and raw material prices due to the Ukraine war, bottlenecks in production and rising transport costs – given the challenging environment of the textile industry, there could not be a better time for the re-launch of the textile trade fair trio,” stated Detlef Braun, Member of the Executive Board, Messe Frankfurt, in his opening speech. In addition, textile companies are faced with the task of finding their way in their own circular economy and rethinking their supply chains “Even in times of crisis, the following applies: Change always harbors business opportunities. And paves the way for progress and competitive advantages,” Braun continued.

Panel talk: Pioneering impulses in challenging times

The panel speakers Lucie Brigham, Chief of Office of the United Nations Office for Partnerships and co-founder of the Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network, Matthew Drinkwater, Head of Innovation Agency at the London College of Fashion, Elgar Straub, Managing Director of the VDMA Textile Care, Fabric and Leather Technologies Association, and Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, moderated by Alexandra Bohn, Style Content Director of F.A.Z. From 3D fabric simulations and machine learning for zero waste cutting technology to the use of blockchain for greater supply chain transparency, fashion-tech trailblazer Matthew Drinkwater shed light on how recent digital developments are redefining design processes and paving the way for innovation: ” Emerging technologies are leading the textile industry into a new era, changing the way we create, communicate and consume products, redefining design processes as well as the deployment and tracking of ressources along the textile value chain.,” Drinkwater explained.

Elgar Straub from the VDMA trade association highlighted the increasing demands on manufacturers of sewing and apparel technology and on machines for processing technical textiles, to automate and digitize production processes – while also showing how an increased focus on regional production can contribute to greater supply chain transparency: “Mechanical engineering and technology providers are the enablers for solutions to today’s biggest challenges: Sustainability, flexibility, and regionalization,” said Straub.

Technology For Good: Cambridge-Based Alchemie Technology’s Royal Recognition For Sustainability In Fashion Industry

CAMBRIDGE, England — June 21, 2022 — Alchemie Technology has been recognised among the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee commemorations, for its work to revolutionise sustainability in the fashion industry.

Alchemie, which has created unique technology for the textile industry, reduces the amount of water used to dye fabric by more than 95 per cent, and energy by more than 85 per cent, was invited to appear in the Official Platinum Jubilee Pageant Commemorative Album – celebrating the life and reign of the Queen.

Textile dyeing and finishing processes are some of the most polluting manufacturing processes on the planet and are responsible for over 3per cent of global CO2 emissions and over 20 per cent of global water pollution.

Target reduction in fossil carbon

Beaulieu Fibres International will offer ISCC Plus (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus) certified bio circular MONO-PP and BICO PP/PE fibres in 1,3-8,9 dtex, available with all the main available finish classes. These drop-in solutions, with no loss in quality, will support customers reduce reliance on virgin fossil carbon in their nonwoven and engineered fibre applications, contributing to the transition towards a circular economy.

“The ISCC Plus Certification Program enables traceable supply chains for mass-balanced solutions of sustainable raw materials. Our first certified production site is Terni, Italy, replacing fossil resources with bio-circular ones and the technology will be extended to the company’s other fibre division plants as a path forward to becoming carbon neutral by 2030,” added Tomaselli.

Achieve material savings

For customers in industrial segments like geotextiles, high-tenacity HT8 staple fibres enable customers to achieve nonwovens for construction projects with high mechanical performance but with reduced weight. The durability of the fibres means that customers can use less raw material for a longer service lifetime, supporting more sustainable design in addition to resource reduction.

For hygiene nonwovens, the Meralux fibres provide significant sustainable design advantages. Meralux fibres deliver around 55% savings in raw materials, with equivalent carbon emission savings. These emission savings are thanks to weight reduction in nonwovens with the same coverage level.

With today’s rush towards greener mobility, the automotive industry is under continuous pressure to increase performance and reduce emissions. Archroma To Introduce Perapret® AIR, A Groundbreaking Air Purification Textile Technology

PRATTELN, Switzerland — June 20, 2022 — Archroma, a global leader in specialty chemicals towards sustainable solutions, launches Perapret® AIR liq, a new industry-leading, light-activated air purification technology for all kinds of fabrics.

The new innovation will be presented at the Techtextil exhibition starting on June 21, 2022 in Frankfurt, Germany (see details below).

The innovation has been developed in line with the principles of “The Archroma Way to a Sustainable World: Safe, efficient, enhanced, it’s our nature”.

The mineral-based Perapret® AIR liq eliminates air pollutants and airborne smells by imitating the natural process of photocatalysis under normal day and artificial light sources.

The chemistry usually used in such applications is nano-sized TiO2 (dioxide titanium), which attack every organic matter, including the textile fiber, and not only pollutants.

Perapret® AIR liq is produced using a unique and patented Core Shell technology that partially surrounds the TiO2 molecules, solving the issue of fiber damage, and at the same time still allowing the photocatalytic process to work efficiently.

Therefore, the innovative Core Shell technology behind Perapret® AIR liq makes it possible to use the capabilities of nano-sized TiO2 also on organic based substances such as cotton, polyester, polyamide, viscose and any additional fiber and its blends.

WAKAYAMA, Japan — June 21, 2022 — SHIMA SEIKI ITALIA S.p.A., Italian subsidiary of Japanese computerized knitting solutions provider SHIMA SEIKI MFG., LTD., will exhibit at the 91st edition of the Pitti Immagine Filati exhibition in Florence, Italy. Products exhibited will include the SWG-FIRST124 and N.SIR123SP computerized flat knitting machines as well as APEXFiz™ design software.

The renewed SWG-FIRST124 is a synthesis of all of SHIMA SEIKI’s experience and know-how in computerized shaped knitting, realizing a tremendous range of knitting from full-fashioning and rib shaping to integral knitting. This all-purpose capability is made possible by the revolutionary SlideNeedle™, which, together with loop pressers and transfer jacks, offers remarkable variety, expanding the boundaries of flat knitting with the capability to produce garments that were previously impossible to produce.

The N.SIR123SP computerized knitting machine with intarsia capability features a special loop presser bed for producing hybrid inlay fabrics with both knit and weave characteristics. Shown in 18G at the SHIMA SEIKI booth, N.SIR123SP will also feature the special i-Plating option, capable of alternating yarn colors in any pattern, producing jacquard-like designs using plain jersey stitch. Plating can be performed within the same course and for individual needles. In combination with the loop presser and spring-type moveable sinker system even greater diversity in knit design is possible.

APEXFiz™ is subscription-based design software that supports the creative side of fashion from planning and design to colorway evaluation, realistic fabric simulation and 3D virtual sampling. Virtual samples are a digitized version of sample making that are accurate enough to be used effectively as prototypes, replacing physical sampling and consequently reducing time, cost and material that otherwise go to waste. APEXFizTM thereby helps to realize sustainability and digitally transform the fashion supply chain.

Continuing from past editions of Pitti Filati are knit samples produced in collaboration with Italian designer Vittorio Branchizio. Staff at the SHIMA SEIKI booth will be donning knit uniforms produced as a collaborative effort between SHIMA SEIKI ITALIA, knitting companies and yarn companies.
