Regel™ Fiber Is Now bluesign® APPROVED

BANGKOK, Thailand — August 14, 2022 — Regel™ fiber, recycled acrylic fiber from Thai Acrylic Fibre Co. (TAF) – Aditya Birla Group, is now bluesign® APPROVED, in addition to being a GRS certified acrylic fiber. This certifies that Regel meets the safety and environmental requirements of bluesign CRITERIA, the latest milestone in their long journey path towards sustainability.

Regel is TAF’s second product that gets bluesign APPROVED after its flagship gel-dyed acrylic fiber Radianza™. Regel was launched earlier this year by TAF that was developed as a result of growing demand of sustainable fashion products from global consumers, brands and retailers

Waste accumulation and its management is one of the key sustainability challenges of the industry and therefore recycling pre-consumer, post-consumer and in-process waste to make new products is one of the most preferred and prevalent ways to reduce the environment impact. Regel is a unique innovation as it is one of the first successful commercialization of acrylic fiber produced by recycling the waste. It is manufactured with an authentic and intimate chemical recycling process which is functionally equivalent to acrylic fiber like warmth, comfort, and vibrant shades.

bluesign APPROVED articles go through a rigorous certification process by Bluesign Technologies AG — the organization behind the certification — and it certifies that these articles are manufactured with a minimum impact on people and the environment.

“We are very proud to receive bluesign APPROVED certification for Regel fiber. We have been getting a lot of overwhelming responses since the launch of Regel. This bluesign APPROVED certification will further strengthen the credentials of Regel as a sustainable fiber and ensure our customers that any fabric made with Regel is produced responsibly in respect to the environment and the safety of the people. This certification is a part of our larger sustainability strategy, and we will continue our vision towards a sustainable future”, said Thomas Varghese, business head – Textiles – Aditya Birla Group.

Unitex Continues Expansion Into The MA Life Science Market

LAWRENCE, Mass. — August 11, 2022 — Unitex and Dacon have added 97,000 square feet of production space to Unitex’s Lawrence facility in response to the vibrant market growth.  Focused on the life science and medical sectors, Unitex is the nation’s largest family-owned linen and uniform service provider to the health industry, with 13 locations in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and now Massachusetts.

The first phase — 90,000 square feet for large-scale processing of bulk hospital/long-term care facility linens — was repurposed from the former Crown Holdings headquarters, a global beverage and food can manufacturer which had operated in Lawrence for more than 25 years. This expansion is focused on the laundry processing of uniforms and supplies for ambulatory care/outpatient medical facilities.

President of Unitex, David Potack, commented: “Unitex is excited to expand our client service offerings in the greater Boston and Eastern New England markets with the construction of our newest facility, which will focus on outpatient and ambulatory healthcare locations. Boston is truly a healthcare hub for growth and innovation and our increased capacity to serve new clients in this market is an exciting development in the evolution of our company. We are proud of our record in constructing environmentally sustainable laundry facilities, where automation is paramount and helps us deliver reliable, consistent high-quality service and products to our clients every day.”

Lawrence is Unitex’s first facility located in the Massachusetts market. An immigrant success story rooted in the hospitality linen industry, this year marks Unitex’s 100th anniversary with Rob and David Potack as the 4th generation of family members to assume leadership.  The firm operates 365 days a year and has attained the TRSA’s Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification for its best management practices in operations, training and sterilization. Unitex’s strategy is based upon a green business model, investing in technology, operations, environmental quality and training focused on natural resource conservation. Operational results:

  • Waste heat reclamation yields gas savings equivalent to usage by 1,200+ households and electricity savings enough to power 200+ homes per year.
  • Water technology reduces detergent use and excess water waste resulting in annual water savings equivalent to usage by 5,000 homes.
  • Detergents are composed of 100-percent organic chemicals.  In place of chlorine bleach, an oxygen-based, biodegradable cleansing agent is used to protect waterways and reduce linen damage.
  • LED lighting, high-speed automation and infrared monitored dryer temperature controls contribute to electricity and gas savings.
  • Ironing machines each have their own gas burner, making them 20 percent more efficient.
  • Delivery trucks contain GPS telemetry and real-time tracking, resulting in efficient routing and reduction of fuel use and emissions.  Trucks are programmed to shut off after 3 minutes of idling.
  • Plastic recycling totals 1.5 million pounds each year.

Dacon’s CEO, Kevin Quinn, states “Unitex’s long-term heritage, community focus and environmental commitment underscore their business ethics and acumen.  It has been a joy working with them.”

North Carolina Textile Executives Highlight Importance Of Industry & Policies Supporting U.S. Competitiveness At Roundtable With Rep. Kathy Manning (D-NC)

WASHINGTON — August 9, 2022 — North Carolina textile executives spanning the fiber, yarn, fabric, and finished product textile industries participated in a roundtable discussion with Rep. Kathy Manning (D-N.C.) today, at which they discussed the innovative achievements and competitiveness of the domestic industry and outlined priority issues in Washington that impact their daily operations.

The roundtable discussion, hosted by Unifi Inc. and sponsored by the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), was held at Unifi’s headquarters in Greensboro, N.C.

North Carolina is the second largest state employer of textile-related jobs, employing more than 30,000 jobs in 2021, according to U.S. government data. The state’s $2.7 billion in textile-related exports leads the nation, according to U.S. government data.

Congresswoman Manning’s visit comes at a pivotal time for the U.S. textile supply chain, which produced $65.2 billion in output in 2021 and employed nearly 535,000 workers. The industry has been at the forefront of domestic manufacturing of over 1 billion personal protective equipment (PPE) items during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the roundtable, North Carolina executives showcased the industry’s important contribution to the state and the U.S. economy as well as its advanced sustainability initiatives, while outlining critical policies, such as the importance of Buy American and Berry Amendment government procurement policies, maintaining strong rules of origins in free trade agreements, supporting a domestic PPE production sector, and the need to address larger systemic trade issues with China.

“Unifi was thrilled to host Representative Manning with other NCTO leaders today at our Greensboro Headquarters. We appreciate the time and consideration she gives to the critical issues in Washington that affect our workers and investment here in North Carolina and the entire region.” said Eddie Ingle, CEO of Unifi.

“In North Carolina, the textile industry is woven into the very fabric of our state and economy, with more than 33,000 workers employed in over 600 textile manufacturing facilities across the state. In Congress, I am committed to supporting our homegrown industry by making PPE in America, protecting the yarn forward rule of origin in our trade agreements, and cracking down on China’s unfair trade practices. I am thrilled to engage with industry leaders in my district, as we discuss ways to grow the U.S. textile industry and the critical role that textile manufacturers play in our local, state, and national economy,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06).

NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas said: “We deeply appreciate Congresswoman Manning’s participation in today’s industry roundtable where she engaged in substantive discussions around policies that help bolster U.S. manufacturing, while hearing directly from executives about the challenges confronting our industry. The diverse U.S. textile industry is technically advanced and highly innovative and provides jobs to local communities in North Carolina and across the country. It is imperative that we have sound trade and government procurement policies that help the U.S. industry continue to grow jobs and contribute to the overall U.S. economy. We look forward to continuing to work with the congresswoman on policies that will help drive more onshoring and nearshoring to the U.S. and the Western Hemisphere, support strong government procurement policies centered around American-made products and lead to strong enforcement of illegal trade practices.”

Digitizing Touch: Haptic Measuring Device From emtec Electronic Replaces Need For Time-Intensive Hand-Panels

LEIPZIG, Germany — August 11, 2022 — Convening again after a two-year coronavirus-induced hiatus, speakers, exhibitors and visitors will gather in the Bavarian city of Hof from September 20-21 to discuss the latest technologies, trends, and developments affecting the nonwovens industry. Rising energy costs, supply chain disruption, and sustainability concerns are some of the central topics to be discussed at the event.

Now more than ever, nonwovens manufacturers are increasingly looking for ways to reduce energy consumption, save costs, and still optimize the quality of their product lines. One approach has been to replace lengthy manual quality control processes with automatic digital solutions. The TSA Tactile Sensation Analyzer from emtec Electronic presents a unique, portable device that delivers valuable data about the haptic, deformation, and recovery behavior of nonwoven materials quickly and reliably.

The instrument was recently hailed in the trade magazine Textile Insight as “Zoom for your fingers,” in that it takes the physical sense of touch, digitizes it, and essentially integrates it into a virtual setting. This allows manufacturers to consistently reproduce the way a product feels to the touch, even when using locally sourced materials in a new location, for instance. A similar machine, the Tissue Softness Analyzer, has already become an industry standard for measuring tissue.

The Tactile Sensation Analyzer is poised to replace the hand-panel testing, in which a certain number of touch experts compare and rank samples based on overall haptic impression. The organization and implementation of such hand-panel tests are often complex and time-consuming. In addition to the time factor, some of the major disadvantages of the manual hand-panel method include the high variance of individual results. An average value of many samples is usually needed to arrive at a reliable value. The human hand is also incapable of reliably distinguishing between haptic parameters, such as softness or smoothness, and cannot objectively measure how elastic a product feels, for example.

Participants to the Hofer Vliesstofftage are invited to stop by the emtec Electronic exhibit and speak with Area Sales Manager Stefan Rübesam for a more detailed discussion or to see a demonstration of the machine.
