MycoWorks To Open World’s First Commercial-Scale Fine Mycelium™ Plant In September

UNION, S.C. — August 7, 2023 — Today, biomaterials technology company MycoWorks announced the opening date of the world’s-first commercial-scale Fine Mycelium production plant. Set to begin operating on September 20, 2023, the 136,000-square-foot factory will employ more than 350 people, enabling MycoWorks to supply its luxury partners with millions of square feet of Reishi per year. Reishi is a new category of premium, natural material that features the strength, durability, and hand-feel of the finest animal leathers with lower environmental impact

“This is the moment the luxury industry has been waiting for; a plastic-free leather alternative that offers undeniable beauty and performance — at scale,” said Patrick Thomas, former CEO of Hermès and MycoWorks board member. “Now that the challenge of supply has been solved, brands will move quickly to commercialize items made with Reishi.”

MycoWorks’ proprietary Fine Mycelium production process cultivates mycelium in a controlled environment, harnessing its natural growth to create beautiful sheets of Reishi, the only leather alternative that meets the luxury industry’s performance standards. Since Reishi’s introduction, the company has partnered with major brands across the luxury, fashion, home furnishings and automotive industries, including Hermès, Ligne Roset and GM.

“There have been two barriers to the decades-long search for a luxury leather alternative: product quality and scalable manufacturing,” said Matt Scullin, CEO of MycoWorks. “In 2016 we eliminated the first by introducing Reishi to the world, and in September 2023 we are answering the question of scale with this state-of-the-art facility in South Carolina.”

MycoWorks operates vertically, owning its technology stack rather than licensing or outsourcing. The development and control of every step of its production process has given the company the depth of expertise to introduce this new category of material to market.

“MycoWorks’ Fine Mycelium platform is an unprecedented advancement in materials,” said Kiersten Stead, managing partner DCVC Bio and MycoWorks Board Member. ”Opening the doors on the first commercial-scale factory has MycoWorks poised to answer the luxury industry’s desire to craft objects with natural alternatives to leather.”

Today’s announcement follows the sharing of test results that demonstrate how Reishi meets luxury standards for material performance without the use of plastics. Fine Mycelium stands out in a field of alternatives that depend on polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films, fillers, or backings to provide strength and durability.

In October 2023, MycoWorks will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which will be attended by brand partners, distinguished guests and government officials in celebration of this industry-first achievement. Attendees will have the opportunity to witness the factory’s cutting-edge technology and learn about Reishi’s diverse applications.

Advanced Structures and Composites Center’s (ASCC’s) Big Ideas To Be Boosted By Optima 3D Weaving

HUDDERSFIELD, England — August 8, 2023 — Following a highly successful week at ITMA 2023 in Milan in June, the UK’s Optima 3D is delivering the special weaving technology it demonstrated to the USA, for installation at the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC).

The 3D weaving system consists of an Optima 3D Series 600 shuttle weaving machine with an integrated 2,688-hook Stäubli SX jacquard and harness. It is also complemented by Optima’s compact warp delivery creel and an associated pirn winder for shuttle bobbins and a spool winder for creel spools.

For safety reasons at ITMA 2023, the carbon fibre yarns that will be processed by ASCC on the Optima 3D Series 600 system had to be replaced with polyester, but it was notably the quietest technology in operation during the ear-shatteringly regular intervals of demonstrations held in the weaving halls by the key players in this field.

Versatility

Optima’s looms offer many advanced features over conventional weaving machines, particularly in terms of versatility, as a result of the comprehensive use of digital control systems allowing rapid parameter and sequence changes, coupled with an innovative shuttle system.

“Our aim from the start was to look at 3D weaving machine technology with a fresh pair of eyes and produce a machine that is simply better by design and delivers real benefits to our customers,” said managing director Steve Cooper. “The key interest in this technology has been in producing new structures from expensive fibers such as carbon into workable structures, as the essential reinforcements for composites.”

“The new Optima 3D weaving system will be a cornerstone of a new textile lab we are developing here,” explained ASCC engineer Professor James Stahl. “We chose the loom to take advantage of the design flexibility the shuttle-based weft/fill insertion will provide for fabrics that will be used in soft and hard composite structures and materials.”

Records

The ASCC is certainly no stranger to advanced technology, or indeed ambitious composite projects — in 2019 it received no less than three Guinness World Records, for the world’s largest prototype polymer 3D printer, the largest solid 3D-printed object, and the largest 3D-printed boat. In its latest project it has further introduced BioHome3D — the first 3D-printed house made entirely with bio-based materials developed in a partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The 182-square-meter prototype features 3D-printed floors, walls and roof which are fully recyclable and highly insulated with 100-percent wood insulation and customizable R-values. Construction waste was nearly eliminated due to the precision of the printing process.

“With its 3D system, Optima is really taking weaving back to first principles — it’s technology that embodies true innovation in both design and process possibilities,” said Jason Kent, CEO of the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA). “It’s great that it will contribute to the development of some very forward-looking projects for tomorrow’s sustainable living at the ASCC, and represents another solid example of innovation from the UK.”

Environmental Study Shows: Sonovia’s Dyeing Technology Dramatically Reduces Pollution In Denim Industry

RAMAT GAN, ISRAEL — July 12, 2023 — Sonovia’s ultrasonic technology drastically reduces environmental pollution in the denim industry, according to a comparative study released earlier this month.

The study that took place over the past two months demonstrates that Sonovia’s technology for dyeing denim reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent, water use by 85 percent, is capable of eliminating up to 99 percent of polluting wastewater, which is a major concern in the fashion industry, and reduces land utilization by 90 percent. Traditional indigo yarn dyeing processes are water intensive requiring on average 60,000 liters of water per process, and rely on polluting chemicals such as hydrosulfite.

These findings have not gone unnoticed by industry leaders. The French luxury conglomerate Kering, which owns renowned brands such as Gucci and Saint Laurent, is partnering with Sonovia to install its ultrasonic indigo dyeing technology into their denim production lines.

Made2Flow which conducted the study focuses on environmental impact measurement and solutions specific to the fashion industry. During the research, Made2Flow compiled data from Sonovia about the rate of greenhouse gas emissions, the use of water, the amount of polluting wastewater generated in the process, and the utilization of the land, as part of the collaboration with Kering. The Sonovia data was then compared to data compiled from production lines in the denim dyeing industry.

With jeans being one of the most widely worn articles of clothing worldwide, Sonovia CEO, Igal Zeitun, explained that “Sonovia remains at the forefront of the green revolution, committed to reducing pollution and increasing sustainability in the fashion industry”.

Zeitun emphasized the significance of the research findings stating: “The dramatic advantages revealed by the comparative study positions Sonovia’s jeans dyeing technology as the leading solution in the industry. Our technology not only reduces production costs for manufacturers but also helps the entire textile industry meet regulatory standards, such as with wastewater treatment and greenhouse gas emissions.”

Market demand for this innovative solution is set to soar as Zeitun said, “Sonovia is attracting very awakened interest from strategic investors, brands and textile manufacturers and is a testament to the confidence and recognition in our technology”.
