Bianca Mannini Joins The Bureau of International Recycling Secretariat In Brussels As New Trade And Environment Officer

BRUSSELS  — May 8, 2025  — The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) is pleased to announce the arrival of a new member of staff, Bianca Mannini, who joined the BIR Advocacy team on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.

Bianca Mannini

With a background in political science, Mannini’s dedication to sustainability has been central to her career. She began in communications for bio-industries and climate/energy projects, gaining expertise in SDGs and the UNDP. She then founded a non-profit organisation in Italy to raise awareness against single-use plastics and encourage local/regional sustainable practices, collaborating with businesses and NGOs.

In the Netherlands, she managed projects focused on preventing plastic pollution and promoting circularity globally. Her experience in the plastics sector will be valuable for her work within BIR, where she will cover commodities such as paper, tyres/rubbers, textiles and plastics.

Originally from Italy, Mannini studied in Belgium, Ireland and the Netherlands, which provided her with a strong international perspective in policy and environmental resource management, alongside fluency in English, French and Spanish.

Welcoming her to the BIR secretariat in Brussels, BIR Director General Arnaud Brunet commented: “Bianca’s expertise and commitment to sustainability make her a valuable addition to our advocacy team. We are very pleased to have her join BIR and are confident she will significantly contribute to our global efforts.”

BIR members will be able to meet Mannini in person at the upcoming World Recycling Convention in Valencia.

Textiles Recycling Expo Gains Support From Key Industry Organizations

BRUSSELS  — May 6, 2025  — The Textiles Recycling Expo held a press conference earlier this week at the Press Club Brussels, drawing participation from key industry associations, sustainability leaders, and EU policy stakeholders ahead of the in-person event on June 4-5, 2025, at Brussels Expo, Belgium.

The press conference marked a major milestone in the lead-up to the event, with speakers highlighting both the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s textile industry as it transitions toward a circular economy. Zied Chetoui, Event manager stated: “As regulation evolves, particularly here in Europe, the industry must act to implement innovative solutions, and this is precisely why the Textiles Recycling Expo was created.”

In coverage by Materials Recycling World (MRW), the conference was framed as a timely response to a “supply crisis” in post-consumer textiles.

Also summarized by Ecotextile News, Robert van der Kerkhof, CEO of  ReHubs, told the press conference: “It really is a new platform, where people can connect, where education can happen, but also — very importantly — be the inspiration for new investments and technologies for the future.

“Speakers will come from government bodies, policy leaders, industry experts, academia, innovators, but also the brands, because it’s these companies that actually shape the textile-to-textile recycling future.”

The Brussels Times noted that the industry is at a pivotal moment, stating that “Europe’s textile industry is set to weave a common strategy together” through collaboration, innovation, and regulation. This aligns with the expo’s core purpose — to provide a unified platform for decision-makers and operational leaders to accelerate scalable, circular solutions for textiles.

Julia Ettinger, secretary general from EuRIC, said: “I think the event comes at a really crucial time for the textile sector and also for Europe’s broader efforts to move towards the circular economy that we have been talking about for many, many years.

“We need to amplify the voices of the European textile reuse operating sector, as well as the recycling sector. We need to share practical know-how and build momentum for European policies that can unlock the full potential of the textile sector and address the unprecedented crisis that we are facing.”

Karla Basselier, CEO of Fedustria, agreed: “The Textile Recycling Expo in Belgium comes at a crucial moment for our industry.

“It will offer a platform to accelerate the shift towards a more circular economy. And whilst we all believe that our industries are constantly innovating, we also have to face some facts, only a percentage of all textiles are currently recycled.”

Dirk Vantyghem, director general of EURATEX, said: “Our mandate is to represent the entire European textile ecosystem, which is around 200,000 companies in the EU generating 170 billion euros ($192 billion).

“For us, the big question is how do we reconcile sustainability and competitiveness. How do we push our companies towards reducing their footprint, being more sustainable while at the same time remaining competitive in this textile industry?”

Registration for the event is free and available via the link. Visit www.textilesrecyclingexpo.com to view the growing exhibitor list, the free-to-attend conference, and many more features. View the full press conference here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWR_FjpuEE8&t=432s

CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor Shows April Sales Growth As Consumers Stocked Up Ahead Of Tariffs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — May 8, 2025  — Retail sales grew in April as many consumers moved up buying to avoid higher prices expected to come with tariffs, according to the CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor, powered by Affinity Solutions, released today by the National Retail Federation.

“Spending rose again in April, driven largely by consumers continuing to pull purchases forward to stay ahead of tariffs that will inevitably lead to higher prices,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Despite declines in confidence caused by the economic uncertainty that has come with tariffs, consumer fundamentals remain intact, supported by low unemployment, slower-but-steady income growth and solid household finances. Consumers maintain their ability to spend and have strong reasons to spend now before tariffs can drive up prices or cause shortages on store shelves.”

Total retail sales, excluding automobiles and gasoline, were up 0.72 percent seasonally adjusted month over month and up 6.76 percent unadjusted year over year in April, according to the Retail Monitor. That compared with increases of 0.6 percent month-over-month and 4.75 percent year over year in March.

The Retail Monitor calculation of core retail sales (excluding restaurants in addition to automobile dealers and gasoline stations) was up 0.9 percent month-over-month in April and up 7.11 percent year-over-year. That compared with increases of 0.4 percent month-over-month and an increase of 5.07 percent year-over-year in March.

Total sales were up 5.08 percent year-over-year for the first four months of the year and core sales were up 5.5 percent.

In addition to strong tariff-driven spending, year-over-year comparisons were likely boosted because Easter fell in April this year after falling in March last year.

Unlike survey-based numbers collected by the Census Bureau, the Retail Monitor uses actual, anonymized credit and debit card purchase data compiled by Affinity Solutions and does not need to be revised monthly or annually.

April sales were up in eight out of nine categories on a yearly basis, led by digital products, electronics and appliance stores, and grocery and beverage stores. Sales were also up in eight out nine categories on a monthly basis. Specifics from key sectors include:

  • Digital products were up 0.62 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted and up 27.67 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Electronics and appliance stores were up 2.8 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted and up 10.5 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Grocery and beverage stores were up 0.59 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted and up 9.51 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Sporting goods, hobby, music and book stores were up 0.81 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted and up 9.19 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Health and personal care stores were up 1.43 percent month-over-monthh seasonally adjusted and up 8.51 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • General merchandise stores were down 0.02 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted but up 6.67 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Clothing and accessories stores were up 1.14 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted and up 5.14 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Furniture and home furnishings stores were up 0.86 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted and up 0.09 percent year-over-year unadjusted.
  • Building and garden supply stores were up 2.77 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted but down 2.1 percent year-over-year unadjusted.

Rieter To Acquire Barmag From OC Oerlikon To Accelerate Its Growth Strategy And Become A Market Leader In Natural And Manmade Fibers

WINTERTHUR, Switzerland — May 6, 2025 —  Rieter has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Barmag from OC Oerlikon for an upfront equity purchase price of CHF 713 million. The acquisition will create a globally leading player in natural and manmade fibers, headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, and is highly complementary to Rieter’s short-staple fiber business.

Barmag is a provider of filament spinning systems used for manufacturing manmade fibers, texturing machines, BCF1) systems, staple fiber spinning and nonwovens solutions and – as an engineering services provider – offers solutions along the textile value chain. In the financial year 2024, the company generated sales of CHF 734 million with around 2 600 employees.

Barmag comprises the established product brands Oerlikon Barmag, Oerlikon Neumag and Oerlikon Nonwoven. The main markets for the Barmag product portfolio are China, India, Türkiye and the United States of America. The innovative and technologically advanced products are developed in Remscheid and Neumünster (Germany) as well as Suzhou and Wuxi (China).

As fiber consumption is projected to rise, most of the growth is expected to come from manmade fibers. The increase of natural fibers such as cotton and linen is limited due to natural boundaries. Manmade fibers will help to meet expanding demand for clothing, technical and home textiles. The strategic acquisition of Barmag will transform Rieter into a leading supplier for converting natural and manmade fibers into yarn.

The transaction is fully in-line with Rieter’s strategy and follows previous acquisitions, where Rieter complemented its portfolio in short-staple fiber machinery and expanded its footprint in components and machinery for manmade fiber production. The combined platform allows to leverage the recovery of global filament and short staple fiber spinning markets and to reduce cyclicality due to diversification of end-markets. The acquisition will further enhance Rieter’s position in the important Asia-Pacific region and provide access to Barmag’s filament expertise, which will help to further scale Rieter’s own capabilities and improve digitization solutions and product sustainability.

Thomas Oetterli, CEO of Rieter: “We are very proud to welcome Oerlikon Barmag, Oerlikon Neumag and Oerlikon Nonwoven to Rieter. We are convinced that this combination will form a market leader in the textile industry which will create value for our shareholders, customers and employees.”

Georg Stausberg, CEO of Barmag: “With this solution, we will have the best new ownership possible, as we will benefit from each other as textile companies from market understanding, technology expertise and complementary offering for our global customer base.”

The enterprise value of CHF 850 million represents a through-the-cycle EV/EBITDA2) of 6.3x (excluding synergies). If certain financial criteria are achieved by 2028, an earn-out component will be paid to the seller. The acquisition is expected to enhance Rieter’s financial performance given Barmag’s structurally higher through-the-cycle profitability and margin resilience in market downturn.

The acquisition financing is secured by a bridge loan facility. Refinancing of the bridge facility will happen through a fully underwritten CHF 400 million rights issue with tradable subscription rights, a CHF 77 million non-pre-emptive private placement which is fully committed and subscribed by Rieter’s two largest shareholders and a bank financing.

Rieter’s largest shareholder, Peter Spuhler (c. 33% shareholding) is supportive of the transaction and committed to participating in the rights-issue pro-rata by exercising its subscription rights as well as investing additional capital through the non-pre-emptive capital raise. After the capital increase, PCS Holding AG is expected to retain a shareholding of c. 33%.

Additionally, Rieter’s second-largest shareholder, Martin Haefner (c. 10%), also supports the transaction and has committed to participating pro-rata in the rights-issue by exercising its subscription rights and investing additional capital through the non-pre-emptive capital raise.

Rieter remains committed to strong balance sheet stability and expects to delever quickly from a pro forma combined leverage per end of 2024 of c. 3x post the CHF 477 million equity capital increase driven by cash generation of the combined entity. An extraordinary General Meeting (“EGM”) is expected to be convened in the third or fourth quarter of 2025 to obtain shareholder approval for the capital increase in connection with the rights issue and the private placement. The definite terms of the rights issue are expected to be determined and communicated on or around the date of the EGM. The acquisition of Barmag is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Rieter is confident it will obtain all regulatory clearances. The closing of the acquisition is targeted for Q4 2025.

Alantra is acting as exclusive financial advisor and Lenz & Staehelin as legal advisor to Rieter. UBS underwrites the bridge loan facility and acts as Sole Global Coordinator, Sole Bookrunner and Sole Manager of the capital increase.

2) Based on adjusted EBITDA for the financial years 2017-2024
