Trans-Pacific Partnership Apparel Coalition Advocates For Modern TPP In Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia — March 9, 2012 — As the 11th round of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
negotiations concludes in Melbourne, Australia this week, the TPP Apparel Coalition was again
present to hold productive discussions with government officials and other industry stakeholders,
including the Australian and Vietnamese textile and apparel industries. In meetings with various
negotiating teams, the coalition advocated for simple, flexible rules of origin, smart customs
provisions, and immediate market access that facilitate apparel trade and investment in the TPP
region. The coalition also met with other US stakeholder groups who increasingly view a positive
outcome on apparel as critical to the overall success of the negotiations.

“Millions of well-paying U.S. jobs would be bolstered by flexible apparel rules and the
successful conclusion of the TPP,” said Stephanie Lester vice president of international trade for
the Retail Industry Leaders Association. “We were pleased to continue a productive dialogue with
the participating countries around a modern approach for apparel trade that reflects the commercial
realities of global value chains and provides immediate market access to create jobs, trade and
investment.”

Restrictive rules such as the “yarn forward” style rule of origin — which require all the
materials that go into a garment to originate and be assembled in a TPP country to receive
tariff-free treatment — are unworkable in today’s global value chains. Past FTAs with TPP countries
have shown that such an “all or nothing” approach does not spur new U.S. exports or new apparel
trade.

When considering ways to create new opportunities in the TPP for apparel trade and
investment, it is important to consider the value and jobs created throughout the entire global
value chain. A global value chain includes the full range of activities that firms and workers do
to bring a product from concept to the final customer. This includes the manufacturing, design,
production, marketing, distribution, retail and support to the final customer.

“The yarn-forward-approach we’ve seen in our past FTAs is not equipped to accommodate today’s
global supply chains and create the kind of trade and investment flows that are needed in the TPP.
It is time for U.S. trade policy to recognize that 98 percent of apparel sold in the United States
is imported and not allow antiquated rules to hold up negotiations any longer. We look forward to
attending the next round of negotiations in the U.S. and continuing the conversation,” concluded
Steve Lamar, executive vice president for the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

Other issued discussed by the coalition included:

  • Advocating for customs provisions that facilitate rather than hinder trade.
  • Emphasizing smart enforcement that views responsible trading companies as partners.
  • Achieving immediate, reciprocal duty free access so as not to delay the job creating benefits
    of the agreement.
  • Ensuring that the TPP is a living agreement so it can grow with a rapidly evolving fashion
    industry.
  • Resisting efforts by interests that have sought to shackle the TPP with demands that will make
it hard for trade and investment to grow in the region.
  • Adopting a general rule of origin that is liberal and flexible, with limited exceptions only
for specific products proven to be import sensitive.
  • Supporting an early conclusion and expansion to other countries such as Japan, Mexico and
    Canada.

The TPP Apparel Coalition supports the negotiation of a 21st Century TPP agreement that
generates new trade and investment opportunities for the benefit of workers, businesses, and
families. These opportunities include buying and selling goods and services, sustaining and growing
well-paying U.S jobs, and providing high added value for the U.S. and TPP economies.

Quality Matters: Lands’ End Launches American Made Durable Goods Collection

DODGEVILLE, Wis. — March 1, 2012 — Lands’ End travels the world seeking the best of everything,
from fabrics to vendors, to bring its product designs to life. In search of the best men’s tee
shirts and sweats, they found them right here in the U.S.A. Lands’ End launched its new collection
of Durable Goods for men, featuring classically styled sweats and tees made in the U.S.A. – from
start to finish.

“Quality matters at Lands’ End. We look at every detail to make sure it meets our high
standards. When seeking the best sweats and tees for our Durable Goods collection, we found
everything we needed – from the fabric to the garment’s construction with a third-generation,
family-run mill — in the United States,” said Max Garbutt, Men’s Division Merchandise Manager,
Lands’ End.

Durable Goods: A National Effort

Creating Durable Goods is a national effort. Designed in Wisconsin, grown in Texas and
crafted in California, each item is styled to endure. The collection features a Crewneck
Sweatshirt, Short Sleeve Tee Shirt, Long Sleeve Tee Shirt, Sweat Pants and Sweat Shorts. Each is
nurtured to perfection from cotton grown in fields in the United States. Prices range from $30 for
a Short Sleeve Tee Shirt to $60 for the Crewneck Sweatshirt. Items are available in classic shades
of red, navy, yellow and green, plus gray heather and white.

“There’s nothing more iconic than the American sweatshirt or tee shirt. These are just two
pieces that define menswear in America. Durable Goods is about celebrating those items by bringing
them back to the United States,” added Max Garbutt. “It’s a collection that goes beyond gym wear.
It’s about items you can wear all the time. John F. Kennedy wore a sweatshirt while he was sailing.
My father wore one when he would go out for a Sunday drive.”

Quality Matters, Quality Details

Durable Goods are easy to live in. They’re soft, loose fitting and carefully prewashed to
mellow the fabric and lightly fade the colors until they’re just right. Smart details such as
rib-knit gussets under the arms and crotch offer greater give in places that need it.

Each piece features ringspun cotton grown across the U.S.A. that is then knit and dyed under
the seasoned eyes of a third-generation, family-run mill in California. Fabric cutting, sewing and
inspection — all done to Lands’ End’s exacting standards — are also completed in California.
Durable Goods are then shipped to Lands’ End headquarters in Wisconsin, where expert customer
service representatives and employees take, fulfill and ship orders.

“We’re proud of our company’s American heritage — from our Wisconsin-based headquarters to
the merchandise we offer that is made in the U.S.A. While the Durable Goods Collection is a small
beginning, we are excited to offer quality “Made in the U.S.A” apparel for our customers.  We
are working on making even more products in America as we identify new domestic manufacturing
facilities that can meet our quality and environmental standards.  As always, we are committed
to offering our customers the best products at a great value. Guaranteed. Period.” said Chris
Kolbe, Brand President, Lands’ End.

India-based Sack Producer Installs Starlinger’s 100th AD*STAR® Conversion Line

Alliance Polysacks Pvt. Ltd., an India-based producer of AD*STAR® block bottom valve sacks, has
installed an ad*starKON 60 conversion line, manufactured by Austria-based Starlinger & Co. GmbH
— a manufacturer of machinery and complete lines for woven plastic bag production and polyethylene
terephthalate (PET) recycling and refinement. The line is the 100th ad*starKON line Starlinger has
sold worldwide.

Alliance Polysacks, founded in 2010 and a member of India-based industrial packaging bags
supplier SPPL Group, will use the new line to produce woven polypropylene Ad*Star sacks that can be
filled with dry bulk goods such as cement, chemicals, fertilizer and foodstuffs such as grains and
rice. The company currently has a production capacity of 63 million sacks per year and plans to
increase that capacity to 132 million sacks per year.

According to Starlinger, the sacks are lighter-weight than paper or polyethylene sacks used
for such applications. The production process, introduced in 1996, involves the use of patented hot
air sealing technology rather than glue or adhesives, and the bags produced are fully recyclable.
The ad*starKON line can produce up to 60 sacks per minute and boasts greater than 85-percent
efficiency, the company reports.

Features include machine-oriented operation with touch screen, integrated quality assurance
system, magnetic transport system, double unwinding stands for the main fabric and the patch rolls,
additional fabric roll monitoring system on all unwinding stations, and semiautomatic roll
changeover. An optional microperforation unit can be used when bags will be filled with highly
aerated goods. The company reports that while the bags are highly air-permeable, product emission
is virtually zero.

Biomedical Structures Announces Expanded Capabilities In Weaving Medical Textiles For Vascular Grafts

WARWICK, R.I. — March 6, 2012 — Biomedical Structures LLC (BMS), a developer of biomedical textiles
for medical devices and other advanced clinical applications, today announced new capabilities for
the high-precision development and manufacturing of vascular grafts.

With the ability to taper very fine fabrics, BMS creates straight and bifurcated tubes for
woven grafts supporting endovascular stent systems designed to prevent abdominal aortic aneurysm
rupture, as well as for other percutaneous coronary intervention stent procedures and peripheral
vascular grafts throughout the extremities. Tapered tubes more naturally match human anatomy and
allow device designers to marry specific dimensions to aortic geometries to more closely mimic
functional shape.

BMS enables this device design with new weaving equipment for very fine polyester, UHMWPE and
other fibers. Fine-woven techniques enable strength and flexibility while limiting stretch, which
allows for tempered movement and makes an ideal solution for vascular grafts alongside the heart
and throughout the body. According to a 2011 report, the peripheral vascular device market is
expected to grow to more than $7.1 billion by 2018, and will be fueled in part by the sale of stent
grafts. The market for stent grafts itself, which includes abdominal aortic aneurysm and thoracic
aortic aneurysm stent grafts, is estimated to almost double in value.

“BMS strives to consistently deliver on our commitment to expanding our medical textile
engineering capabilities for device OEMs looking to more precise, tailored solutions,” said BMS CEO
Dean Tulumaris. “Now device OEMs will be able to utilize vascular grafts with a very specific
geometry for successful stent support and more lifelike properties. We will continue to enhance our
capacity to handle very fine bio-absorbable and permanent fibers and shape them to match human
anatomy as closely as possible within the body.”

BMS offers expertise in knitting, braiding, weaving, nonwovens, and composites, and utilizes
a broad offering of biocompatible absorbable and non-absorbable materials in devices, drug delivery
and surgical systems for orthopedic, cardiovascular, bariatric, cosmetic and veterinary medicine
applications.
