New Technology Keeps Commission Finisher Vaz da Costa One Step Ahead

MÖNCHENGLADBACH, Germany — May 15, 2018 — In the commission finishing business, finding the time to make necessary new investments in the latest technology can be difficult. Services can’t just stop and orders be delayed when an old machine needs to be dismantled and a new one installed.

For Vaz da Costa, which was founded in 1960 on the edge of the historic center of Guimaraes in Northern Portugal, there’s also the question of space. The town center of Guimaraes has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, yet its suburbs have expanded significantly in the past half century and now the Vaz da Costa plant is surrounded by residential buildings, making further outward expansion near-to impossible.

Nevertheless, the site is currently dyeing and finishing around 100,000 meters of fabric daily, and has expanded its commissioning services to customers in France, Spain, Belgium and Germany in recent years. These exports now account for around 20 percent of total commission finishing business. A second business involving the making-up, embroidery and packaging of high-end bed and table linen under the well-known Bovi brand also operates from the site, with a total combined workforce of around 180 people. Around 80 percent of these products are for export markets. Separate entrance and exit points for the two businesses have recently eased logistics.

Investments

“We are currently in the middle of what is our biggest ever investment program, although it’s pretty much an ongoing process,” said Amélia Marques, who joined the company, which was founded by her father, fresh from obtaining her economics degree in the late 1970s. This was at a time when the company was struggling, as Portugal adjusted to democracy in the years following its Carnation Revolution of 1974.

“You can imagine, it was not easy for a young woman to be introduced to the management of such a traditional company in Portugal back then, and my father had his own way of doing things, so there was some resistance to my ideas,” she said. Marques was soon joined by her brother Francisco and her sister Isabel, however, and together the trio have successfully steered Vaz da Costa’s progression ever since. Today, Amelia’s son and daughter are also part of the management team as it moves to third generation family ownership.

Vaz da Costa has recently successfully installed and commissioned a new Monforts Montex tenter, having previously opted for a machine from a rival supplier which proved problematic on its installation in 2012, as well as in subsequent day-to-day operation.

There have been no such problems with the new Monforts eight chamber machine, which has a working width of 3.6 meters and as such is one of the largest in Europe, operating continuously at speeds of above 100 meters a minute. It is equipped with a Mahlo weft straightening unit and a Benninger padder, in addition to a Monforts Ecobooster hear recovery system.

Fine tuning

“There are always many adjustments to be made in fine-tuning such a machine,” said Fernando Araújo, of Maquicontrolo, the Monforts representative for Portugal. “It’s not just like buying a new car. There are so many challenges arising on a day-to-day basis.”

“The automation features on the latest Monforts machine certainly help to eliminate any chance of human error,” added Amélia Marques, “but there are so many parameters involved. The heating distribution, for example, is always challenging. Maintaining a consistent level can be difficult for so many reasons. It can be a question of the temperature in the plant changing rapidly, or the difference between how the machine has been cleaned from one shift to the next. There are lots of things you can’t see immediately and sometimes you only detect things after a problem has occurred. For this reason I don’t think you’ll ever be able to fully automate a finishing line.”

The company is primarily finishing 100-percent cotton fabrics in wide widths, in the weight range of 130-200 grams per square meter, with very even conditions required for the squeezing.

Quality control

“Because we are in constant production, the emphasis is increasingly on quality control at the laboratory stage and we now have two fully equipped labs, where personnel has increased from a single person to eight people,” said Marques.

Following the installation of the new Montex stenter, Vaz da Costa is this year planning a further 5 million euro investment program which will see a new warehouse building, away from the main site, but closer to the main motorway link. New bleaching and singeing units and a drum dryer are also to be installed and these will be built up at the former warehouse in order to minimize the time required for installation and commissioning.

“We can’t afford to stop production for the usual timescale involved so this will ease the pressure and keep things flowing,” Marques said. “It’s a question of organizing it all when and how we can, and when it will cause the least disruption, but we expect to have it all completed by October or November. We are also currently exploring the potential of digital pigment printing for our bed linen business, and also looking at new embroidery machines and a new calendar. Investment is ongoing, because only the strongest players who keep up with the latest technology survive.”

Holland & Sherry’s “Duet” Named Most Attractive Trevira CS Collection At Munich Fabric Spring

BOBINGEN — May 2018 — The Munich Fabric Spring — Münchner Stoff Frühling (MSF) — an annual event celebrating interior design and textiles, took place this year March 16-19, with Trevira CS® as one of its sponsors. At the event, the public accolade for most attractive CS collection went to velour product “Duet” by British editor Holland & Sherry. Congratulations!

For the third year in a row, visitors to the MSF could cast their vote on which of the CS collections shown they preferred. They were asked to name their favorite CS collection by filling in a card, which they then posted in one of the Trevira CS letterboxes placed in each of the MSF showrooms.

The flame-retardant Duet, a stylish upholstery fabric, turned out to be the public’s top choice. The 100-percent Trevira CS® velvet material is available in a wide range of colors, from light grey, red and violet to dark blue and black.

A velour was also the winner of last year’s Trevira CS competition, showing that high quality Trevira CS articles are very much ready for the market and its ongoing trend towards the use of velvets.

The draw was entered by a large number of people, with one lucky participant winning a trip to Florence for two, worth 2,500 Euros. We congratulate the interior design firm Raum und Form in Pfaffenhofen!

Monna Lisa Evo Tre 16 On Display At FESPA 2018

MILAN, Italy — May 15, 2018 — Epson and its subsidiaries For.Tex. and Fratelli Robustelli, will display the new Monna Lisa Evo Tre 16 at FESPA 2018, the largest global exhibition for large format printing. It is a further expansion of the Monna Lisa range. This digital printer was designed by the engineering company F.lli Robustelli and boasts the latest innovative and exclusive proprietary printing technology, Epson PrecisionCore which is considered the standard for high-quality digital printing in the industrial textile sector.

The new Monna Lisa Evo Tre on-show has 16 heads, with eight colors and the ability to use acid, reactive, disperse and pigment inks. It is extremely versatile and can adapt to a continually evolving market such as textiles. Monna Lisa Evo Tre 16 is available in three different print heights (180-220-320 centimeters) and meets the needs of a market which requires high print quality but not high productivity — instead, it focuses on products of excellence. At Fespa 2018, Monna Lisa Evo Tre 16 will be demonstrating pigment printing, an application which is strongly growing. This is due to its economic and environmentally friendly benefits, since it does not require steaming and washing as post-treatment phases.

Within the large format digital printing market, textiles have seen the greatest growth margins. According to a recent MarketsandMarkets study, the digital textile printing market will increase from $1.76 billion, in 2018, to $3.21 billion in 2023. Among the reasons for its success is the ever-increasing quality achieved thanks to new techniques and materials, the convenience of digital production for small samples and the growing demand for solutions with less environmental impact.

One of the objectives of the three companies has been an attention to quality and reliability combined with environmental sustainability. This commitment became tangible after the launch of the first Monna Lisa in 2003 and continued over time with the different versions unveiled over the years.

A digital printing and sustainability case study published in 2017 showed that digital technology results in a lower carbon footprint than traditional printing. A rotary system produces 139.56 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents (kg CO2eq) while a digital system produces 85.66 kg CO2eq thus limiting the contribution to global warming. There is a reduction in water consumption (approximately -27 percent), and this has two important environmental effects: reduction of waste water volumes for purification and reduction of energy needed to heat processing water, with a further lowering of the carbon footprint of the printer’s working life.

Thanks to the optimized updating and maintenance protocols developed by F.lli Robustelli’s engineering team, the non-replacement of the Monna Lisa structural parts results in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to an alternative and more invasive revamping cycle. This reduction can be qualified as an indirect environmental benefit.

Clariant Shows Full Spectrum Of Pigments And Dispersions At FESPA 2018 Global Print Expo

MUTTENZ, Germany — May 15, 2018 — Clariant is taking space at FESPA 2018 in Berlin May 15-18 to show how its growing range of pigments, dyes and pigment preparations for inks and toners meets developing needs of customers in the print industry. FESPA is Europe’s largest exhibition for the wide-format and graphic print industry, and Clariant will be on booth A39 in hall 3.1.

The company will premier new pigments for inkjet inks and will also highlight the support it provides to customers in regulatory compliance.

Clariant already offers many solutions for making inkjet inks and prints more colorful, but now it is broadening its palette with two new products, Ink Jet Magenta E-S VP6057 and Ink Jet Orange GR VP6102. As their names indicate, both are pigments for use in inkjet inks. They can be used in water-, solvent- and UV-based inks. Both have excellent light- and weather-fastness properties, meaning they can be used in a wide variety of applications outdoors as well as indoors. Both also have low cation contents needed for high ink stability and reliable print performance.

Ink Jet Magenta E-S VP6057 is a blue shade magenta with excellent flow properties and long-term viscosity stability. It is characterized by very good transparency, very small particles and narrow particle size distribution. Its very good flow properties and brilliant shade (high chroma) make it superior to other common PR122 grades currently available on the market.

Ink Jet Orange GR VP6102 is unique in that it is the only Pigment Orange 43 grade pigment commercially available that has been designed specifically for digital inks. It exhibits the most brilliant orange shade of all orange pigments.

“The traditional CMYK four color system (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) has certain restrictions regarding color gamut, which is why more color pigments for printing are now trending,” says Rüdiger Baur, Head of Global TM NIP & Color Filter, BU Pigments at Clariant. “Expanding the gamut with additional colors — orange and also green and violet — is gaining more attention, especially in graphic arts (flyers, brochures) and packaging (labels, food boxes).”

During the show, Clariant will provide visitors with information on its wide range of existing solutions for digital package printing, including pigments not only for inks but also for liquid toners for labels and packaging. In addition, it will show color solutions for short-run digital publication printing. Clariant produces the full range of process colors as well as shading colors.

“Clariant is present in markets all around the world with a dedicated product range for all aspects of non-impact printing,” says Christian Zeh, Senior Technical Manager, BU Pigments at Clariant. “That means pigments and dyes, including Duasyn SF (salt free) purified inkjet grades, Hostacopy and Hostajet preparations, Copy Charge charge control agents (CCAs), and — in selected regions — pyrogenic silica for toner.

“In fact, Clariant has one of the widest ranges of colorants and dispersions for inkjet printing. We develop our products according to current and future market needs, enabling our customers to manufacture state-of-the-art inkjet inks, and to ultimately deliver the constant innovation expected by end-users and consumers.”

Flameproofings Installs BRÜCKNER Line

LEONBERG, Germany — May 2018 — Flameproofings Ltd. is a producer of flame retardant coated fabrics for the upholstery and household textiles markets. The company is part of the John Holden group and a third generation family business, established more than 50 years ago. It installed and commissioned recently a state of the art BRÜCKNER coating plant in its facility in Bolton, England. The line was sold through the Brückner agent John Bradley in Macclesfield, England.

Brückner worked extensively with the Flameproofings team to define requirements and customize the design of the machine to ensure that all expectations were met or exceeded in all regards. Essential requirements were best in class heat and temperature consistency across and throughout the dryer, non-stop batch changeover and exact application as well as control of the coating media according to the customer requirements. Besides the technical features Flameproofings had high expectations in reducing the energy consumption in support of its sustainability initiatives.

Brückner’s design team, in conjunction with Flameproofings, developed a sophisticated line entry concept with two driven unwind stands, followed by a tension controlled roller accumulator to avoid length tensions and providing improved dimensional stability. The coating line is equipped with a vertical pin chain system and has specially designed air plenums for homogenous air distribution to the coated fabric. The direct gas heating system, in combination with Brückner’s staggered chamber arrangement and patented split-flow air circulation design, provide best available temperature consistency across the length and the width of the tenter dryer.

Before the order had been finalized, Brückner proofed its competence with coating trials at its technological center at the company’s headquarters in Leonberg, Germany. Regina Brückner, owner of the Brückner Group is satisfied: “We are very happy that the Technology Centre gives us the possibility to support our customers in the development of their products. Our technologists are assisting our customers at every time, giving them advice in trying out new products or new machine settings.”

ACIMIT: Textile Machinery Orders At A Standstill In Early 2018

MILAN — May 2018 — The order index for textile machinery elaborated by ACIMIT, the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers, for the period from January to March 2018 dropped 12 percent compared to the same period for 2017. The value of the index came in at 104.8 points (basis: 2015=100).

This decline mainly affected orders for the domestic market. Indeed, in Italy the index came in at an absolute value of 94.1 points, that is, 22-percent less than the first quarter for 2017. In foreign markets, the drop was more contained (-9 percent) and the absolute value of the index registered 107.2 points.

ACIMIT President Alessandro Zucchi does not appear to be too worried by these results for the first three months of the year: “In Italy, we had a rebound effect following the heavy investments made during 2017. The first three months of this year were characterized by a physiological slowdown that doesn’t concern our manufacturers who are used to processing an order portfolio of over four months.” Even abroad, the situation is still considered positive. “Last year, orders were satisfactory abroad as well,” continues ACIMIT’s President. “For 2018, conditions remain for consolidating the growth trend, as evidenced by the good results obtained at recent trade fairs held in different countries, at which many of our manufacturers participated.”

Stäubli Reports Successful ITM 2018

PFÄFFIKON, Switzerland — May 2018 — The ITM trade fair for textile technology closed its doors 2018 after four days profiting from an important visitor density. Stäubli with its welcoming booth could attract many interested public, hold intensive and constructive talks and transform many visits into real business opportunities. Thus with industrials from Turkey, but as well from Eastern and Middle-east countries, though for the complete range of systems and solutions that Stäubli offers to the weaving and knitting industry.

“We were glad to see this overwhelming interest in our solutions for the weaving and knitting industry,” said Fritz Legler, sales and marketing manager. “Our reliably and precisely running high-speed shedding solutions such as cam motions, dobbies, and Jacquard machines, convinced many weaving industrials. The renowned SX and LX electronic Jacquard machines could be seen on our booth, but were presented in addition on the two complete Jacquard installations visible on this years’ ITM fairground. This underlines the positive regard from the whole weaving industry towards us. Stäubli is renowned as a leading supplier for state-of-the-art-technology that meets the customers’ needs, and brings further benefits to the weavers in terms of reliability, long service life, and versatility in application.”

At the booth Stäubli showed for the first time in Turkey, the automatic drawing in machine SAFIR S40, featuring a mobile drawing in machine and stationary drawing in station. This installation offers multiple layout possibilities and with its little space requirements fits into every mill. Out of the versatile SAFIR Series that offers solutions for any application, the SAFIR S40 model is dedicated to mills processing cotton warps. So this exhibit was perfectly in line with one of the most visible trends at ITM: denim. Especially in the Turkish weaving industry denim fabric is again in the focus.

Even if ITM 2018 was followed by Domotex in Gaziantep, many carpet weavers came to discover latest carpet samples woven on ALPHA carpet systems. The exhibits showed Stäubli binding technology know-how through their unique patterns, perfect surfaces and sharp designs without mixed contours, thus from low to very high densities depending on the application. These properties are part of the perfect pre-arrangement for any kind of carpet project, if rug or wall to wall, for private households, public places such as sport stadiums or the transportation sector.

In the knitting sector, and more precisely in sock knitting, the countries’ industry underlined its worldwide leading position. And Stäubli supports this successful knitting industry with automation solutions, such as the D4S automatic toe sewing device, which increases the efficiency in the mill. This very successful device could be seen in at the Stäubli booth, but as well in many places in the knitting hall where operating sock knitting machines were already equipped with The Turkish textile industry has been facing heavy global competition; but with this years’ ITM edition the country has clearly shown that it remains an important textile manufacturer.
