Kimberly-Clark Reports Progress to Sustainability 2022 Goals

DALLAS — June 27, 2018 — Kimberly-Clark Corp. today reported its progress toward achieving its Sustainability 2022 strategy to create social, environmental and business value.

“We continue to make strides in our efforts to create positive social and environmental change,” said Thomas J. Falk, Kimberly-Clark’s chairman and CEO. “That’s why we are committed to an ambitious set of sustainability goals that will have a lasting impact on the people we serve around the world and the communities we touch.”

Kimberly-Clark’s 2017 Global Sustainability Report outlines the company’s strategies and results in greater detail, and is organized and presented in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Standards, Core level. Key outcomes include:

  • Social Impact – In the first two years, the lives of 4.3 million people in need worldwide have benefited through programs that increase access to sanitation, help children thrive and empower women and girls.
  • Forests & Fiber – Sourced 89 percent of the fiber used in tissue products from environmentally preferred sources, including FSC® certified virgin fiber and recycled fiber.
  • Waste & Recycling – Further increased the amount of waste diverted from landfills (includes both manufacturing and non-manufacturing facilities) to 95 percent.
  • Energy & Climate – Lowered our absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 18 percent (from 2005 baseline) through improved energy efficiency and increased use of alternative energy sources.
  • Supply Chain – Invested in watershed analyses, as well as water treatment and recycling technologies, to further reduce our water consumption in water stressed areas.

In addition, Kimberly-Clark also announced expanded programming in several key areas.

The company began measuring and reporting on Scope 3 GHG emissions – the indirect emissions that occur both upstream and downstream in the value chain – and will establish reduction targets later this year. The company worked with the World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund to identify the company’s primary sources of Scope 3 emissions.

This work comes on the heels of a major commitment in 2017 to annually purchase approximately 1,000,000 megawatt hours of renewable wind energy, equivalent to about one-third of the electricity needs of Kimberly-Clark’s North American manufacturing operations.

“While our work in 2017 has put us ahead of schedule on our GHG emissions goals, we see continued opportunities to unlock business value from our Energy and Climate strategy,” said Lisa Morden, Kimberly-Clark’s vice president of Safety and Sustainability. “The focus on Scope 3 emissions will help us work with our suppliers and customers to identify opportunities for greater efficiencies across our supply chain.”

The company also plans to drive further gains toward its goal of diverting at least 150,000 metric tons of waste through programs that reduce waste through design, or divert it from low value disposal outlets to higher value, beneficial uses.

“Our challenge is to eliminate waste in our processes, products and packaging, while also exceeding customers’ expectations with safe and effective products that can be properly managed after use,” added Morden. “By adopting a systems based approach with key partners, we can play a role in enabling the circular economy, one which is restorative and creates value.”

Earlier this year, Kimberly-Clark joined the Closed Loop Ocean initiative to help prevent plastic leaking into the world’s oceans, and it will continue to promote critical labelling programs like the On-Pack Recycling Label (U.K.), How2Recycle™ (U.S.), ‘Love NZ’ Soft Plastic Recycling (New Zealand) and REDcycle (Australia) to provide simple, consistent recycling or disposal instructions for consumers. Further, K-C Professional’s RightCycle Program has reclaimed and recycled more than 600 metric tons of non-hazardous lab, cleanroom and industrial waste including apparel, gloves and safety eyewear since 2013.

“I am proud of our dedicated employees around the world – and our many partners, suppliers and customers – who are part of achieving these goals,” added Morden. “Through sustainable practices that support a healthy planet, we can build stronger communities and ensure our business thrives for decades to come.”

Yarn Expo Autumn Moves To Mid-October; Held Concurrently With ITMA ASIA + CITME

HONG KONG — June 27, 2018 — The new national government-organized China International Import Expo (CIIE), to be held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in November, has necessitated the need for long-term renovation of halls at the fairground, requiring Yarn Expo Autumn 2018 to be held one month later, and concurrent with ITMA ASIA + CITME, from October 15-17.

The scale and importance of CIIE — an initiative launched personally by Chinese President Xi Jinping at a Belt & Road Forum in 2017, and hosted by the country’s Ministry of Commerce — has necessitated the renovation of three halls at the National Exhibition and Convention Center for a period of two months starting in early September. This unavailability of the full fairground has led to the decision to move Yarn Expo Autumn two weeks later to October 15-17, still taking place at the National Exhibition and Convention Center. Therefore, Yarn Expo Autumn will not be held at the same time as Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics – Autumn Edition this year, but instead will take place concurrently with the biennial ITMA ASIA + CITME which runs for two extra days until 19 October.

“This unavailability of the halls was unforeseen,” Wendy Wen, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd explained, “but upon notice from the fairground, we immediately assessed all possible alternatives for hosting the fair. While it is unfortunate that for this edition it will not be taking place concurrently with Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics, we are confident that the same strong business results can still be achieved alongside ITMA ASIA + CITME. With over 1,600 textile machinery manufacturers and some 100,000 trade buyers from different textile sectors taking part in ITMA ASIA + CITME, Yarn Expo exhibitors will have abundant opportunities to meet buyers of apparel fabrics and home textiles as well as garment manufacturers.”

Yarn Expo Autumn is Asia’s leading trade platform for the yarn and fiber industry, with quality suppliers from around the world showcasing natural and blended yarns including cotton, wool, flax, and man-made fibers and yarns, as well as specialty products including elastic, fancy and blended yarns. Last year’s Autumn Edition attracted 493 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions, and 17,185 trade buyers from 84 countries and regions.

The fair is organized by Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and the Sub-Council of Textile Industry, CCPIT.

PFÄFFIKON, Switzerland — June 26, 2018 — Stäubli, a global provider of high-quality automated systems and solutions for the weaving industry, will be presenting its product range this August at Febratex, Brazil’s largest trade fair for the textile industry. Visitors to the booth will have the chance to find out how Stäubli’s solutions for workflow automation, automated weaving preparation, and shedding for frame and Jacquard weaving can enhance their mill operations. Stäubli’s state-of-the-art weaving and knitting technologies enable weaving mills to efficiently and cost-effectively produce high-quality fabrics of all sorts for a wide range of applications.

Visitors to the Stäubli booth (Booth 100, Sector 1, Street 7) will find this a perfect opportunity to learn all about the product range of Stäubli Textile and talk with Stäubli experts about solutions to their specific needs and applications in the mill. The pioneering products of Stäubli are the result of a well-balanced combination of reliable performance, technical perfection, and proven technologies.

Automatic warp tying ensures speed and quality

The renowned TOPMATIC warp tying machine will be on display in operation, processing a 100-percent cotton warp without lease. This machine handles yarns in a range of 0.8 to 500 tex/Nm 2 – 1,250. Featuring double-end detection, it ensures optimum tying quality and helps minimize downtime of the weaving machine. Handling a broad range of yarns and offering easy operation and quick set up, this machine can easily be integrated into the operations of any mill.

Automatic drawing-in for an economical weaving process for greige material and terry

With its SAFIR automatic drawing-in installations, Stäubli brings further time savings into the weaving preparation process. Featuring state-of-the-art technologies such as double-end detection and repeat detection and management (both colour and S/Z), SAFIR machines are suitable for a wide range of applications and use in a variety of setups. They are ideal for weaving mills of any size that seek to optimize their workflow and increase their product quality.

High-speed frame weaving solutions for every woven application

The broad range of Stäubli cam motions and dobbies includes ideal machines for any type of weft insertion system for any application. The latest generation of the S3000 and S3200 series of rotary dobbies incorporates a new locking system, which is the heart of every dobby. This evolutionary feature provides enhanced security for the selection of the heald frames, allowing higher running speeds, superior reliability, and less noise and vibration. And Stäubli has increased the efficiency of frame weaving installations even further with its recently launched maintenance-free harness motions.

A wide range of Jacquard machines for every application

When it comes to Jacquard weaving, mills can choose from Stäubli’s competitive product range of Jacquard machines. Whether terry cloth, narrow fabrics, upholstery fabrics, or technical textiles, Stäubli Jacquard machines master every challenge. The recently re-engineered LX series features a lifting mechanism that allows high-speed weaving of even extremely heavy fabrics. With a coaxial drive shaft and a special chassis supporting the beams and bearings, the latest models can handle up to 26% greater loads than the previous models. Improved positioning of the fans in the LX housing optimizes internal airflow, ensuring that the machine interior remains clean and at a controlled temperature. LX Jacquard machines are available in sizes up to 6,144 hooks.

One of the latest models in the high-speed LX series is the LXL, designed for even greater load capacity. This model can be equipped with 6,144 to 16,384 hooks. Formats up to 32,768 can be achieved by combining two machines. And because a precisely matched Jacquard system gives mills even higher performance, Stäubli offers high-end harnesses for any application, which also enables weavers to swiftly respond to changing market needs.

Automatic toe-linking device for a shorter sock production process

Stäubli’s recently launched D4S device is an automation solution that significantly shortens the production process of socks. Socks must no longer be removed from the knitting machine for closing the toe on a separate machine. The D4S can be mounted directly on the circular sock knitting machine; it closes the sock immediately after knitting. The D4S significantly increases output and ensures optimum quality.
