“We are very excited about this next phase of our relationship with our long-time partners at Glen Raven,” Wyner said. “Joining our automotive headliner operations into a single company will unlock the next level of synergies, support continued aggressive technology investment, streamline the global fabric innovation and development process, and reinforce Shawmut’s position as the undisputed market leader in automotive headliner fabrics.”

“The combination of these two industry leaders is powerful,” Hill said. “It brings together two highly-talented organizations with complementary skills and compatible cultures. Loop Industries Announces World’s First Integrated Waste To Loop™ PET Resin Manufacturing Technology

TERREBONNE, Quebec— June 27, 2018 — Loop Industries Inc. announced that, as a next step in commercializing its Generation II technology, it is designing a fully integrated manufacturing facility to upcycle waste PET and polyester fiber into virgin quality Loop™ PET resin and polyester fiber. Loop is in the process of engaging engineering partners to complete the integrated design.

“A fully integrated start-to-finish process will soon exist to commercialize Loop’s innovative Generation II technology and help tackle the global plastic crisis,” said Daniel Solomita, CEO and Founder of Loop. “These facilities will make it possible for all forms of waste PET and polyester fiber, even ocean plastics that have been degraded by the sun and saltwater, to be fully recovered and upcycled into PET of the highest purity and performance quality.”

This integrated innovation will join Loop’s proprietary depolymerization technology with state of the art PET production processes, allowing plastic waste to be utilized as feedstock to produce Loop PET resin and facilitate the transition to a circular economy. The technology will take waste PET and polyester fiber that can include PET plastic bottles and packaging of any color, transparency or condition, and carpet and other polyester textiles that may contain colors, dyes or additives and separate the PET from all contaminants to produce virgin quality FDA-approved food-safe Loop™ PET resin and polyester fiber.

“To encourage more recycling at the community level and reduce climate causing emissions, Loop facilities are planned to be optimally located adjacent to large population centers where ample feedstock can be found,” added Solomita.

This integrated manufacturing design will be the basis for Loop’s commercialization strategy, which is now the company’s focus in order to capitalize on its technology and respond to the demands of consumers, governments, non-governmental organizations and brand owners who have committed to ambitious sustainability targets.

Global Bioenergies Successfully Moves Its C3 Process To Demo Scale

EVRY, France — June 26, 2018 — Global Bioenergies announces having reached a new milestone in scaling up its C3 process converting renewable resources into isopropanol and acetone. These two biobased compounds target large markets in the cosmetics and solvent segments. They can also be converted into polypropylene, a key component in the plastics industry, with market value exceeding $70 billion. A first pilot run was successfully conducted in December 2017. A demonstration run of several cubic meters, representing a further 20 fold increase in scale has now been successfully carried out, and paves the way towards a first commercial plant.

The C3 process, which enables the production of renewable isopropanol and acetone, is the second process reaching Demo plant scale in Global Bioenergies’ portfolio. This process is based on a breakthrough innovation: bacteria with a core metabolism rewired in order to increase the production yields from sugars, and thus reduce the production costs of biobased products.

The two compounds, isopropanol and acetone, are used by many industries — solvents, materials, cosmetics — and can be converted into propylene and eventually polypropylene, a key component in the plastics industry with a market value exceeding $70 billion.

The trend and market pull on these biobased molecules, including green polypropylene, is driven by commitments to sustainability from large corporations in the food, cosmetic, toys and furniture industries.

At the end of 2017, ARD, who operates Global Bioenergies’ industrial pilot for the Isobutene process, carried out the first step in scaling-up the C3 process. The next phase, at Demo plant scale, was subcontracted to Bioprocess Pilot Facility (BPF) located in Delft in the Netherlands. ARD and BPF are both members of the Smartpilots consortium, which gathers the main European institutions focused at scaling up innovative processes.

The first test was successfully carried out: the fermentation profile obtained in the 4 m3 fermenter reproduced those obtained at laboratory and pilot scale.

Frédéric Pâques, COO of Global Bioenergies, stated: “The close collaboration between the teams at Global Bioenergies and BPF was key to reach success. BPF has shown reactivity and a thorough industrial experience. The results not only validate this scale-up step, but also demonstrate the robustness of our process.”

Marc Delcourt, CEO of Global Bioenergies, added: “This is the final scale of fermentation before commercial operations. A number of validations remain to be done and engineering studies have only recently begun, but we are already engaged in concrete discussions with major international industrialists to partner on the commercial deployment of the process. The C3 process is now the second pillar upon which value is being created at Global Bioenergies, after the Isobutene process.”

Kimberly-Clark Reports Progress to Sustainability 2022 Goals

DALLAS — June 27, 2018 — Kimberly-Clark Corp. today reported its progress toward achieving its Sustainability 2022 strategy to create social, environmental and business value.

“We continue to make strides in our efforts to create positive social and environmental change,” said Thomas J. Falk, Kimberly-Clark’s chairman and CEO. “That’s why we are committed to an ambitious set of sustainability goals that will have a lasting impact on the people we serve around the world and the communities we touch.”

Kimberly-Clark’s 2017 Global Sustainability Report outlines the company’s strategies and results in greater detail, and is organized and presented in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Standards, Core level. Key outcomes include:

  • Social Impact – In the first two years, the lives of 4.3 million people in need worldwide have benefited through programs that increase access to sanitation, help children thrive and empower women and girls.
  • Forests & Fiber – Sourced 89 percent of the fiber used in tissue products from environmentally preferred sources, including FSC® certified virgin fiber and recycled fiber.
  • Waste & Recycling – Further increased the amount of waste diverted from landfills (includes both manufacturing and non-manufacturing facilities) to 95 percent.
  • Energy & Climate – Lowered our absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 18 percent (from 2005 baseline) through improved energy efficiency and increased use of alternative energy sources.
  • Supply Chain – Invested in watershed analyses, as well as water treatment and recycling technologies, to further reduce our water consumption in water stressed areas.

In addition, Kimberly-Clark also announced expanded programming in several key areas.

The company began measuring and reporting on Scope 3 GHG emissions – the indirect emissions that occur both upstream and downstream in the value chain – and will establish reduction targets later this year. The company worked with the World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund to identify the company’s primary sources of Scope 3 emissions.

This work comes on the heels of a major commitment in 2017 to annually purchase approximately 1,000,000 megawatt hours of renewable wind energy, equivalent to about one-third of the electricity needs of Kimberly-Clark’s North American manufacturing operations.

“While our work in 2017 has put us ahead of schedule on our GHG emissions goals, we see continued opportunities to unlock business value from our Energy and Climate strategy,” said Lisa Morden, Kimberly-Clark’s vice president of Safety and Sustainability. “The focus on Scope 3 emissions will help us work with our suppliers and customers to identify opportunities for greater efficiencies across our supply chain.”

The company also plans to drive further gains toward its goal of diverting at least 150,000 metric tons of waste through programs that reduce waste through design, or divert it from low value disposal outlets to higher value, beneficial uses.

“Our challenge is to eliminate waste in our processes, products and packaging, while also exceeding customers’ expectations with safe and effective products that can be properly managed after use,” added Morden. “By adopting a systems based approach with key partners, we can play a role in enabling the circular economy, one which is restorative and creates value.”

Earlier this year, Kimberly-Clark joined the Closed Loop Ocean initiative to help prevent plastic leaking into the world’s oceans, and it will continue to promote critical labelling programs like the On-Pack Recycling Label (U.K.), How2Recycle™ (U.S.), ‘Love NZ’ Soft Plastic Recycling (New Zealand) and REDcycle (Australia) to provide simple, consistent recycling or disposal instructions for consumers. Further, K-C Professional’s RightCycle Program has reclaimed and recycled more than 600 metric tons of non-hazardous lab, cleanroom and industrial waste including apparel, gloves and safety eyewear since 2013.

“I am proud of our dedicated employees around the world – and our many partners, suppliers and customers – who are part of achieving these goals,” added Morden. “Through sustainable practices that support a healthy planet, we can build stronger communities and ensure our business thrives for decades to come.”
