Gentherm Partners With ThermoAnalytics To Advance Human Thermal Comfort Predictions

NORTHVILLE, Mich. — February 15, 2019 — Gentherm, the global developer of thermal management technologies, today announced a partnership with ThermoAnalytics Inc., a thermal modeling software development firm, to improve human thermal comfort predictions.

Individual comfort varies widely from person to person, and there is an increased need to improve existing and develop new software capabilities that can accurately predict an individual’s personalized comfort and wellness. The collaboration leverages the thermophysiology expertise from both companies to design and develop new specialized and unique tools that will support a deeper understanding of true thermal comfort.

The partnership aims to move beyond thermal comfort predictions to include the effects of moisture on human comfort. ThermoAnalytics will add new functionality to their software based on previous research conducted with industry-leading companies and the U.S. Army. The advanced software capability will enable Gentherm to improve the personalized thermal comfort experience provided through the Company’s Climate Control Seat (CCS®) and future ClimateSense™ solutions. These features will be integrated into ThermoAnalytics’ robust suite of thermal modeling software.

Braun Linen Service’s Pomona, Calif.-based Plant Earns Hygienically Clean Healthcare Certification

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — February 15, 2019 — Braun Linen Service, a third-generation owned and operated industrial laundry serving Southern California for more than 80 years has achieved the Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification for its Pomona, Calif., laundry, reflecting its commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and its capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing.

The Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification confirms the organization’s continuing dedication to infection prevention, compliance with recognized industry standards and processing healthcare textiles using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, a focal point for Hygienically Clean inspectors’ evaluation. The independent, third-party inspection must also confirm essential evidence that:

  • Employees are properly trained and protected;
  • Managers understand regulatory requirements;
  • OSHA-compliant; and
  • Physical plant operates effectively.

To achieve certification initially, laundries pass three rounds of outcome-based microbial testing, indicating that their processes are producing Hygienically Clean Healthcare textiles and diminished presence of yeast, mold and harmful bacteria. They also must pass a facility inspection. To maintain their certification, they must pass quarterly testing to ensure that as laundry conditions change, such as water quality, textile fabric composition and wash chemistry, laundered product quality is consistently maintained. Re-inspection occurs every two to three years.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for hospitals, surgery centers, medical offices, nursing homes and other medical facilities.

Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification acknowledges laundries’ effectiveness in protecting healthcare operations by verifying quality control procedures in linen, uniform and facility services operations related to the handling of textiles containing blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Certified laundries use processes, chemicals and BMPs acknowledged by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, American National Standards Institute and others. Introduced in 2012, Hygienically Clean Healthcare brought to North America the international cleanliness standards for healthcare linens and garments used worldwide by the Certification Association for Professional Textile Services and the European Committee for Standardization.

Objective experts in epidemiology, infection control, nursing and other healthcare professions work with Hygienically Clean launderers to ensure the certification continues to enforce the highest standards for producing clean healthcare textiles.

Braun’s Paramount facility recently earned the Hygienically Clean Hospitality certification.

Techtextil North America 2019 Exhibitor Preview: USTER Technologies

Automated fabric inspection

At Techtextil North America 2019 Uster introduces its newly-integrated systems for automated fabric inspection. Although the Uster name may not yet have the impact in fabric manufacturing as in other sectors, its range of inspection technology now being presented is class-leading, backed by 28 years’ experience.

This new offer is based on Uster’s acquisition last year of Elbit Vision Systems (EVS), the Israel-based pioneer in automated optical inspection equipment. Now incorporated within Uster, the EVS products are part of a comprehensive textile quality monitoring and control offering, from fiber to fabric.

Multiple technical textiles applications

EVS technology is applicable to wide-ranging fabric types and end-uses, including numerous specific and diverse segments of technical textiles. Visitors to previous Techtextil North America shows have already been able to view EVS monitoring and fabric quality assurance systems since 2006. Haggar Clothing Names Winner Of First Menswear Design Competition For FIDM Graduates

DALLAS — February 15, 2019 — Haggar Clothing Co. selected the winner of the first FIDM SuperLabâ menswear design competition today. Zachary Hall of Sierra Madre, Calif., bested two other finalists to take home the top prize — an offer for a full-time position on the Haggar design team.

The competition, which began with eight graduates of the FIDM menswear program in August, required participants to develop plans for 15-piece collections that demonstrate a deep understanding of the millennial consumer market and the Haggar brand. Beyond the designs, Haggar also asked finalists to source materials and create the technical specifications and details that a factory would need to produce each garment.

Competitors faced two rounds of judging, with a presentation of six initial silhouettes in August and today’s full collection presentation, where they were evaluated on criteria including creativity, appropriateness to market and the collection’s viability.

“While the FIDM SuperLabâ branded banner is one we’ve used for many years for special projects, this marked the first menswear competition and the first with a job offer on the line,” said Barbara Bundy, FIDM vice president of education. “Using their education in materials sourcing and technical package development, our graduates moved from the conceptual side of design to the more tangible and logistical elements necessary to produce a retail collection.”

“This contest model isn’t something a lot of brands would try,” said Haggar Chief Sourcing & Merchandising Officer Tony Anzovino. “Working with FIDM brought us three highly qualified designers, any of whom could have been a good fit on our team. That said, we are delighted to begin work with Zach this summer.”

Hall is expected to join the Haggar design team in June. Other finalists in today’s competition were Nicole Snyder of Ankeny, Iowa, and Ashley Cheng of Taipei, Taiwan.

NatureWorks Announces 100 Percent Third-Party Certified Sustainable Feedstock By 2020

MINNETONKA, Minn. — February 14, 2019 — A new initiative at NatureWorks will ensure that by 2020 100 percent of the agricultural feedstock for Ingeo™ biopolymers and Vercet™ performance chemicals will be certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification System (ISCC) to the ISCC PLUS standard of best practices in agricultural production.

NatureWorks was the first biopolymers manufacturer to become certified to the new ISCC PLUS standard in 2012 and currently has more than 40 percent of its agricultural feedstock certified. At full capacity, more than 90 farms will be involved in the program by 2020.

The ISCC PLUS certified crops are grown within 50 miles of the NatureWorks’ Blair, Nebraska, production facility, which has an annual production capacity of 150,000 metric tons of Ingeo biopolymer. Every farm entering the program receives training in adhering to the ISCC PLUS certification’s principles, which are the following:

  1. Protect highly biodiverse and high carbon stock areas.
  2. Implement best agricultural practices for the use of fertilizers and pesticides, irrigation, tillage, soil management, and the protection of the surrounding environment.
  3. Promote safe working conditions.
  4. Comply with human, labor, and land rights.
  5. Comply with laws and international treaties.
  6. Implement good management practices and continuous improvement.

“New materials innovation is being driven by the tenants of the circular bioeconomy, and as we seek to decouple plastics from fossil feedstocks, we remain committed to feedstock diversification and to critically assessing the sustainability of each and every feedstock we use,” said Rich Altice, CEO and president of NatureWorks.

ISCC PLUS is an independent third-party sustainability certification system developed in a multi-stakeholder initiative. The comprehensive program certifies the sustainability of agricultural feedstocks used for biobased products, including both the environmental and social aspects of agricultural production. Site specific audits and certificates ensure full traceability and chain of custody along the supply chain, ensuring that the total volume of Ingeo received by the final user of the product can be traced back (and documented through a mass balance system) to the equivalent amount of certified, sustainable crop produced. ISCC certification has been adopted by global brands and is supported by non-governmental organizations.

As part of NatureWorks’ commitment to renewable, sustainable feedstocks and materials, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation recently announced that NatureWorks, along with other global brandowners and manufacturers, have signed the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. As a signatory, NatureWorks committed to the following in support of sustainable agriculture for bioplastics:

  • By 2019, 60 percent of the company’s feedstock will be certified as sustainably and responsibly managed via ISCC PLUS.
  • By 2020, 100 percent of feedstock will be certified as sustainably and responsibly managed via ISCC PLUS.
  • By 2025, 100 percent of new feedstocks for additional manufacturing capacity will be certified as sustainably and responsibly managed via an independent third-party administered program.
