Organic Trade Association Launches Organic Fraud Prevention Solutions Program

WASHINGTON — March 6, 2019 — In a major step by the organic industry to fight against fraud in the global organic system, the Organic Trade Association on Wednesday announced the official launching of its groundbreaking Organic Fraud Prevention Solutions program.

Organic businesses may now voluntarily pre-enroll in a program to help minimize or eliminate organic fraud both inside and outside of the United States. The new program is based on the Organic Trade Association’s tested and completed Organic Fraud Prevention Guide that provides businesses engaged in organic trade with a risk-based process for developing and implementing organic fraud mitigation measures.

“Fraud in the global organic supply chain poses a significant threat to the integrity of the organic brand,” said Laura Batcha, CEO and executive director of the Organic Trade Association. “For the past two years, the Organic Trade Association has prioritized significant time and resources into organic fraud prevention solutions. We are fighting fraud on many fronts, including through the 2018 Farm Bill and through private sector initiatives. The more companies that join this industry-driven program, the stronger the organic supply chain will be.”

The global organic market has been on a steady rise for more than two decades, and has never been bigger. It is now an almost $90 billion market, with the American organic market alone accounting for close to $50 billion. Organic imports into the United States in 2017 totaled around $2.1 billion, up nearly 25 percent from the previous year. In recent years, however, investigations have revealed imported products fraudulently labeled as organic, and gaps in the complex organic supply chain.

Organic stakeholders already stepping up

Already, several organic companies have pre-enrolled in the program. These companies participated in a three-month pilot project last year that tested the program at their operations. The businesses represent the entire organic supply chain, from farm to processor and a diverse range of products, services and commodities including fresh produce, grain, dairy, eggs, meat, beverages, packaged and prepared foods, fiber and textiles, importers and consulting services. The pre-enrolled companies are:

  • Global Organics Ltd. — handler/importer;
  • Grain Millers Inc. — handler/processor/grains;
  • I Was Thinking — importer/handler/co-packer, grains, seeds, legumes, sweeteners;
  • Naturepedic Organic Mattresses — textile manufacturer/retailer, mattresses, bedding;
  • Organically Grown Company — distributor/produce;
  • Organic Valley CROPP Cooperative — producer/handler/livestock/dairy/meat;
  • Pipeline Foods LLC — handler/supply chain solutions/feed grains/oilseeds;
  • J.M. Smucker Company — processor/multi-ingredient;
  • Stonyfield — producer/handler/livestock/dairy; and
  • True Organic Products Inc. — manufacturer/fertilizer.

Consulting firms Wolf, DiMatteo & Associates and Miles McEvoy, Lacewing LLC have also pre-enrolled in the program as Trusted Advisors, a category of professionals that may qualify and partner with Organic Fraud Prevention Solutions and work with enrolled companies to develop an Organic Fraud Prevention Plan. Trusted Advisors are experts in organic certification as well as in conducting vulnerability assessments and organic fraud mitigation plans.

Organic Fraud Prevention Solutions establishes a framework and formal process for businesses to create continuously improving internal programs for achieving organic integrity throughout their associated supply chains. The program requires training, an organic fraud vulnerability assessment and the development of an organic fraud prevention plan. After a company successfully registers with the Organic Trade Association with the implementation of the organic fraud prevention plan, the company will be considered “Organic Fraud Prevention Enrolled.” The enrollment process is integrated into the organic certification cycle and maintained annually.

The program is not a certification or verification program nor is it a product label. It is a quality assurance program designed to complement and reinforce USDA’s organic standards and the work of the accredited certifying agencies.

“Everyone plays a role in preventing organic fraud,” said Gwendolyn Wyard, Vice President of Regulatory & Technical Affairs for the Organic Trade Association and staff coordinator for the association’s Global Organic Supply Chain Integrity (GOSCI) Task Force, the 48-member task force formed two years ago to develop the fraud prevention program. “It is critical that organic businesses have robust systems and measures in place that adequately support the promise of providing organic products that people can trust.”

Enrollment eligibility

To pre-enroll, a company must be an Organic Trade Association member and either certified organic or listed with a USDA recognized Material Review Organization such as OMRI (Organic Material Review Institute). Eligible operations include farmers, handlers, processors, distributors, traders, retailers and input manufacturers. There are also opportunities for accredited certifiers, consultants and advisors that would like to partner in the program. Pre-enrollment initiates the process, and signs the eligible company up for the first offered training that will take place in late summer or early fall.

“Our Organic Fraud Prevention Solutions program will become the industry standard reference for excellence and achieving integrity across complex organic global supply chains,” said Batcha. “We all have a responsibility to fight fraud, and the Organic Trade Association is doing everything in its power to address the problem.”

Teijin Develops Extra-Light Automotive Side-Door Module Made Of Advanced Multi-Material Composites

TOKYO — March 6, 2019 — Teijin Ltd. announced today that its automotive composites specialty groups have developed a multi-material composite automotive door concept that maintains required crash specifications while reducing overall weight by 35 percent when compared to a conventional steel door.

A prototype of this unique approach, developed jointly by Teijin Composites Innovation Center (TCIC) and Continental Structural Plastics Holdings Corporation (CSP), will be on display in the Teijin Group booth (hall 6, G28 & J28) at JEC World 2019, taking place March 12-14 in Paris.

The module is made from carbon fiber sheet molded compound (SMC), glass fiber SMC and unidirectional glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) to offer both high strength and low weight. Additional benefits include cost efficiency equal to that of an aluminum door module, and the ability to achieve deep draws and superior design freedom not achievable with a metal. The solution also withstands the heat level of the conventional E-coat automotive painting process.

Tough, lightweight, eco-friendly modules are increasingly being adopted, especially in Europe, for automotive components such as resin-based tailgates, bonnets (hoods) and roofs to help reduce CO2 emissions and further the range of electrical vehicles. Multi-material side-door modules for high-volume vehicles have been realized by some automakers, however, they still are particularly challenging for designers as these components must meet especially demanding requirements for shock absorption to protect passengers in crashes, fatigue resistance to withstand the stresses of repeated opening and closing and accommodate interior harnesses for electrical wiring and signal components.

Teijin plans to continue enhancing the quality of its side-door module capabilities by applying various high-performance materials and technologies available within the Teijin Group. Leveraging its strengths in composite technologies, the goal is to launch a commercial door module by 2025 and become known as a global supplier of multi-material automotive components, targeting sales worth approximately $2 billion by 2030.

MADE IN GREEN By OEKO-TEX®: For A More Sustainable Textile Industry

Sponsored by OEKO-TEX®

We can already clearly see today that our actions and our lifestyles are impacting our planet and our fellow human beings. Over the past 50 years, the average temperature has increased at the fastest rate since systematic record-keeping began. The greatest global challenges also relate to energy, more specifically, to our total energy consumption and our reliance on fossil fuels. The way that we interact with our environment is also resulting in rising sea levels, more and more extreme weather events, flooding, periods of drought, and storms.

In this context, the textile industry, along with the oil and automotive industries, makes a significant contribution to changing our environment. Harmful chemicals in rivers and seas and a dwindling supply of water are just some of the effects that are already clearly manifesting themselves. It is equally important to assume social responsibility for the people who produce our textiles on a daily basis. Therefore, it is all the more imperative for manufacturers, merchants, and consumers to pay even more attention to sustainability.

Greater awareness when choosing textiles

A study entitled “The Key to Confidence” that OEKO-TEX® carried out together with the market research firm Anerca International shows that the awareness of and the need for greater transparency within the textile industry is already growing. The study surveyed more than 11,000 consumers of clothing and home textiles around the globe about sustainability issues.

The results show, among other things, that 4 out of 5 people consider climate change to be a real and worrying problem and that the textile industry is perceived as one of the major environmental sinners. Some 66 percent of survey participants also stated that they wanted to help find solutions to these problems. Almost the same percentage set great store by the product safety of their textiles and environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing.

MADE IN GREEN – the label for sustainably produced textiles

One solution to this issue is the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® label. MADE IN GREEN designates consumer products and semi-finished products from all stages of processing in the textile value chain. These products have not only been thoroughly tested for hazardous substances, but have also been manufactured in environmentally friendly facilities and under socially fair working conditions.

MADE IN GREEN gives consumers a great way of opting for products that are made in a sustainable and socially fair manner at the point of sale.

Brands, manufacturers, and merchants also have the chance to highlight their commitment to sustainability to their consumers right on the product thanks to MADE IN GREEN.

“Sustainability is our future,” said Georg Dieners, general secretary of the OEKO-TEX® Association. “It is only by making sustainable buying decisions that we can bring about change. We want to help consumers make a good choice for themselves, their fellow humans, and our environment with MADE IN GREEN,” remarked Dieners.

The added value of MADE IN GREEN also lies in the fact that it uses an unambiguous product ID or QR code on the label, providing full transparency about the manufacturing route taken by a textile product bearing this designation: from yarn to the finished consumer product.

Six out of ten people want their textiles to be free of harmful substances

Testing textiles in accordance with STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is part and parcel of the MADE IN GREEN label. Textile products may only bear the STANDARD 100 label if all elements meet the required testing criteria set forth by the OEKO-TEX® Association and thus help bring about high and effective consumer protection in terms of potentially harmful substances. This includes accessories, such as studs, buttons, zippers, and linings.

Products bearing the STANDARD 100 or MADE IN GREEN label have been thoroughly tested for harmful substances using the strict OEKO-TEX® catalog of criteria.

Testing criteria used by the OEKO-TEX® Association are binding around the globe and are modified annually to reflect the latest insights. As a whole, they far exceed national legislation so they enhance transparency and comparability given varying specifications about harmful substances and environmental standards in producing countries.

The more intensively a product comes into contact with the skin, the more stringent are the requirements that must be met. Consequently, the strictest limit values of the entire testing system apply to baby items (OEKO-TEX® product class I), followed by garments worn close to the skin (product class II, e.g., underwear and over-garments), products without direct skin contact (product class III, e.g., coats and jackets) and furnishing materials (product class IV, e.g., curtains and table linens).

Independent, environmentally friendly, and socially responsible

Environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and socially responsible working conditions at participating facilities are documented for MADE IN GREEN using the thorough STeP by OEKO-TEX® certification process. STeP stands for Sustainable Textile and Leather Production.

STeP certification can be issued for all facilities in the textile chain — from spinning mills to the clothing industry, including manufacturers of foam and textile logistics firms. In essence, STeP meets companies where they are when it comes to sustainability.

If the business has put in place certificates and management systems, such as ISO standard 14001 and OHSAS certification 18001, there is less red tape involved in the STeP certification process. After all, OEKO-TEX® recognizes the steps that have already been taken. Its holistic approach and full checks of all relevant areas of the company make STeP worthwhile for companies that already embrace sustainable business in part because no extra time and effort is needed. Around the globe, 271 companies from all stages of the manufacturing process are already certified in accordance with STeP.

Their sustainability performance is displayed on the STeP certificate using a three-stage scoring system. To reach entry level 1, businesses have to answer at least 70 percent of the assessment’s entry-level questions. Level 2 shows good implementation of the required environmental and social criteria. Level 3 certifies exemplary implementation as a best practice example.

Businesses certified in accordance with STeP can display their commitment in their environmental reports or demonstrate it to customers as evidence of their dedication to sustainability. Moreover, the scoring system, combined with the audit report issued by OEKO-TEX®, gives businesses specific tips about areas in which there is additional potential for optimization and serves as the foundation for setting sustainability goals. Day after day, OEKO-TEX® works with passion and technical expertise to make sure that these goals are met and implemented.
