Vidalia Mills Partners With Imogene+Willie As First Premium Selvedge Denim Customer

VIDALIA, La. — January 21, 2020 — The new North American textile maker Vidalia Mills announced it has partnered with Nashville, Tenn.-based, Imogene+Willie as the mill’s first customer of its premium selvedge denim.

As previously announced, Vidalia Mills had recently acquired 45 antique Draper X3 selvedge denim looms from a demolition company in Greensboro, N.C. In turn, Imogene + Willie will be the first brand to be making jeans/garments in the United States from fabric loomed on Vidalia’s newly revived historic machines.

In making the announcement, Dan Feibus, CEO of Vidalia Mills explained: “We are so excited to welcome Imogene+Willie and their talented team into the Vidalia family as our first selvedge denim customer. Daimler First Automotive Company To Test UBQ’s Climate-Positive Material In Auto-Part Manufacturing

TEL AVIV, Israel/STUTTGART, Germany — January 20, 2020 — Daimler today announced a trial and development partnership with Israeli cleantech company, UBQ Materials, to explore the use of UBQ’s climate-positive material in the production of automobile parts. Daimler is also promoting the use of UBQ™ across its logistics manufacturers to offset carbon footprint throughout the Daimler supply chain.

Daimler is the first automotive company to partner with UBQ, which has developed a patented process to convert unsorted, landfill-destined waste, into a renewable, thermoplastic substitute that can be made into everyday goods.

Daimler chose to partner with UBQ through Plug and Play’s Startup Autobahn, an innovation platform that connects emerging technologies to pilot opportunities with multinational corporations. Daimler is currently testing and evaluating the incorporation of UBQ in the production of a range of Daimler automobile parts. Following further trials and examination, Daimler and UBQ will decide whether the material will be incorporated in vehicles to go to market. Initial results have proven positive.

To produce its thermoplastic material, UBQ breaks down mixed waste streams into their most basic natural components — lignin, cellulose, sugar, fiber — and creates a new sustainable, composite material, through a closed-loop, energy efficient process that does not use water, generate effluents, emit harmful fumes or residues. As a raw material, UBQ can be made into thousands of applications including shopping carts, pipes, trash cans, and automotive parts. The material has been developed over the last eight years by UBQ scientists.

By diverting waste and its harmful emissions from landfills, incorporating UBQ into a plastic product can eliminate or significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Based on a lifecycle analysis completed in 2019, UBQ was deemed the “most climate-positive thermoplastic material on the market”, according to Quantis, an international provider of environmental impact assessments.

The partnership with Daimler builds on a momentous year for UBQ. In November 2019, UBQ partnered with Arcos Dorados, the largest independent McDonald’s franchise in the world, which will use UBQ material in in-store items all over Latin America. Earlier in the year, the Central Virginia Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) became the first U.S. organization to leverage the solution with 2,000 recycling bins made with UBQ.

Today, UBQ operates a test plant in southern Israel which already supplies UBQ to the plastic industry with a capacity of 5,000 tons per year. UBQ is currently in the first stages of global expansion with a full scale facility planned for the United States later this year.

Culp Home Fashions Achieves Sustainability Award At Stokesdale, N.C., Facility

HIGH POINT, N.C. — January 21, 2020 ─ Culp Inc. today announced that Culp Home Fashions, the company’s mattress fabrics division, recently earned the 2019 Sustainability Award from ICE Recycling.

This award highlights Culp’s ongoing initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint and promote sustainability. As part of this effort, Culp Home Fashions has been working with ICE Recycling since 2017 to achieve landfill free status at the company’s Stokesdale, N.C., production facility. Based in Lake City, S.C., ICE Recycling custom designs plans for local businesses to divert their waste products away from landfills. ICE Recycling specializes in carbon footprint reduction by the bailing, grinding and packaging of recycling materials for alternate end uses. Substantially all fabric and yarn waste, as well as plastic, cardboard and other operational waste, generated from the Stokesdale location is now sent to the recycling facility at ICE Recycling so none of this material enters a landfill. Culp conducted extensive employee training and followed strict guidelines and procedures to reach this goal for Stokesdale.

In addition to the Stokesdale plant, Culp Home Fashions has another North Carolina manufacturing facility located in High Point that produces mattress covers. This facility, known as CLASS, is expected to achieve landfill free status within four to six months. The company also operates a production facility in Quebec, Canada, that uses hydro and wind power to provide 99.8% clean renewable energy. Culp Home Fashions is currently working with the Quebec government in an effort to locate recycling facilities in close proximity to its Quebec location, with the goal to achieve landfill free status for this facility as well.

Together, these initiatives reinforce Culp’s company-wide commitment to sustainable production and environmental responsibility across its operations. In 2019, the company’s upholstery fabrics division introduced LiveSmart Evolve™, a new line of fabrics featuring highly durable, stain-resistant performance fabric combined with recycled fibers. These fabrics have been very well received as a product that fulfills the desires of environmentally-conscious consumers. Additionally, Read Window Products, Culp’s window treatment business based in Knoxville, Tennessee, has a solar-powered workroom.

Mahlo Cooperates With Universities In Bangladesh

SAAL, Germany — January 21, 2020 — As guest speakers at lectures at the Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) and the Northern University Bangladesh, representatives of the German mechanical engineering company Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG introduced the students to the requirements and solutions of modern textile production. In the future, the connection to one of the most important textile markets in the world is to be further strengthened.

“No excuse for warped fabric” was the striking title of the lecture prepared for the students by Head of Sales Thomas Höpfl and Area Sales Manager Adnan Andac. At BUTEX, Prof. Md. Abdul Kashem, Vice Chancellor, and Prof. Dr. Shaik Md. Mominul Alam, Head of the Department of Textile Machinery Design & Maintenance welcomed them. At the Northern University the experts from Germany were joined by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Anwar Hossein, Prof. A. Y. M. Abdullah, Chairman of the Northern University Bangladesh Trust and Prof. Dr. Engr. Md. Humaun Kabir, Dean of the Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Data-based production as a solution

Together, they showed the 300 or so future leaders how modular process control can be the answer to current challenges in the industry, such as rising costs for raw materials and personnel. “In the age of Industry 4.0, data-based production is indispensable,” was Höpfl’s central message. Mahlo has therefore developed the mSmart digitalization concept. Höpfl and his colleague Andac explained the principle in a practice-oriented way, using the production steps around the stenter as an example: “Without measurement and control systems, textile finishing is like a black box. The user is solely dependent on his
experience. However, if he uses suitable sensor technology, the processes become transparent and can be controlled effectively”. Mahlo uses its automatic straightening system to eliminate residual distortion. The yarn density sensor Famacont PMC regulates yarn density and basis weight to minimize residual shrinkage values. Process control systems such as the Permaset VMT measure the fabric temperature and thus regulate the dwell time. If the producer still monitors residual and exhaust air moisture, he prevents the
fabric from overdrying, for example, and thus saves a considerable amount of energy.

Textiles in the age of Industry 4.0

“Since all Mahlo machines are networked in the mSmart environment, the user receives all the essential data at a glance, anytime and anywhere,” says Adnan Andac. This enables a quick reaction based on the latest values. Process control thus not only helps to save resources, but also to make the machinery easier to handle. “And those responsible have more time to concentrate on other projects.” The interested questions and discussions at the end of the lecture showed that the topic had hit the nerve of the students.

The more than 5,000 students at BUTEX and the Faculty of Textile Engineering at the Northern University of Bangladesh are part of the most important industry in their country. “The large number of students alone shows the importance of the textile sector”, Höpfl knows. This is why the company was very pleased about the opportunity to get in touch with young professionals of such an important market. The Mahlo representatives therefore expressed their great thanks to Tun H. Kyaw, CEO of their long-standing service partner Tootal Quality Resources Ltd, who had established the connection, as well as to the responsible persons of the two universities.

The Board of Directors of DOMO has appointed Yves Bonte to succeed current CEO Alex Segers during February, 2020. Closing of the acquisition of Solvay’s European performance Polyamide Business by DOMO is expected to take place on January 31.

Plastic Recycling Awards Europe 2020: Freudenberg Performance Materials Named Among The Finalists

Every year, Freudenberg turns billions of post-consumer PET bottles into recycled polyester nonwovens. This material is then used as carriers for bituminous waterproofing membranes.

WEINHEIM, Germany — January 21, 2020 — Freudenberg Performance Materials  has been shortlisted for the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2020, in the category “Building and Construction Product of the Year” for the project “The virtuous lifecycle of a PET bottle”. Every year, these prestigious awards aim to recognize important achievements and developments in the use of recycled materials, product design and innovative manufacturing within the European plastics recycling industry. The initiative is jointly organized by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) and Crain Communications, which organizes the Plastics Recycling Show Europe.

“It is a great honor to be nominated as a finalist for the Plastics Recycling Awards Europe 2020. It reaffirms our global commitment to sustainability,” said Dr. Frank Heislitz, CEO Freudenberg Performance Materials. The history of recycling at Freudenberg dates back to the 1990s. Ever since, the company has been converting post-consumer PET bottles into polyester nonwovens. This material is then used to produce carriers for bituminous waterproofing membranes. At its recycling plants in Novedrate and Pisticci (Italy) and in Colmar (France), Freudenberg currently recycles around 2.5 billion PET bottles every year. Laid end to end, that number would go around the earth 15 times.

By recycling PET bottles, Freudenberg replaces virgin raw materials with recycled polyester of the same quality. This saves natural resources and reduces waste that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. Furthermore, eliminating the energy consumption associated with producing virgin polyester means fewer CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.

The award winners will be announced on March 26 during the second day of the Plastics Recycling Show Europe, which is this year being held in Amsterdam.

The Plastics Recycling Awards Europe are open to any organizations and individuals across the continent who are involved in recycling plastic materials.
