DEVIL-DOG Dungarees Sets Sights On Realistic Sustainability

NEW YORK CITY — January 30, 2020 — With the relaunch of its legacy denim brand, DEVIL-DOG Dungarees, GENERAL SPORTWEAR impressed their retail partners with the ability to leverage 93 years of private label apparel production knowledge and service into a new viable branded business. As if launching a brand in an extremely challenging retail climate was not tough enough, the team at DEVIL-DOG is looking to push the limits once again.

At the Feb 2020 PROJECT Show in Las Vegas, DEVIL-DOG will unveil a new sustainable project they call “SET.” SET is an acronym for the three elements DEVIL-DOG is building into a new group of Fall 2020 styles: Sustainable Materials, Eco-Friendly Production Methods and Transparent Sourcing.

“DEVIL-DOG used sustainable materials, such as Repreve® in the pocketing and in select fabrics, from the very start,” said Sean Connelly, vice president of merchandising and sales. “The new SET development allows us to take it one step further, deconstructing a garment, and allowing us to look at every element and replace it with a more sustainable option — generic cotton is replaced with a combination of recycled, US Trust, or BCI; polyester is replaced with Repreve, regular paper is replaced with jacron or recycled paper, and overly processed hardware, patches or labels are removed or replaced with versions that require less steps.”

At the production level, the new SET product will require less water due to fabrics using newly developed ECO-indigo technology in addition to new process reducing wash techniques proprietary to General’s laundry. “We have always been mindful about efficient operations, and replacing outdated techniques, machinery, and fixtures.  Recently many of those efforts are eco-friendly in nature, including solar power, recycling, and more efficient water treatment processing. The new indigo dyes used on the SET product will help take us to the next level in water and energy conservation,” said Jeff Rosenstock, president and owner, General Sportswear.

Transparent sourcing has always been at the forefront of General’s business ethos. “All of our DEVIL-DOG denim production runs solely through our two WRAP Platinum Certified wholly owned production facilities in Central America,” said David Rosenstock, executive vice president and Owner at General. “We know where every garment is at all times in the process, and can trace and certify all raw materials back to our highly vetted suppliers.”  A list of all DEVIL-DOG’s suppliers will be visible on their website starting Fall 2020.

“We have all seen the retail landscape change drastically over the past few years. Much of that change occurred as a reaction to the change in consumers buying habits,” Connelly said. “Just think what can happen if every brand and manufacturer changes their production habits. It’s not that complicated. We all must do what we can, and endeavor to find realistic solutions, and engage them now. The winning methods will set the standards that we can all follow. DEVIL-DOG is extremely excited be a part of this evolution with our new SET denim development.”

Tent Professionals Enjoy Business And Fun At Tent Conference 2020

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — January 30, 2020 — Event tent installation is all about teamwork, and the 110 verified participants at IFAI Tent Conference 2020 got to show off those skills last week in an “Amazing Race”-style competition that had them working together to solve puzzles, climb a rock tower and ride a mechanical bull among other fun challenges!

Gathering at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo in River Ranch, Fla., tent pros got a taste of the ranch lifestyle while networking and benefiting from valuable educational sessions. Saroj Bains, director at Event Labor Works, Montreal, Canada, described the conference as “going to summer camp with all my colleagues. Tent Conference embraces and supports team building within the industry. This was a great takeaway.”

The three-day event kicked off on Wednesday, January 22, with a chilly wilderness adventure that included an airboat and swamp buggy ride and trap and skeet shooting. Old and new friends enjoyed an old-fashioned cookout followed by socializing at the ranch saloon and s’mores around a fire pit.

The conference got down to business and education on Thursday, January 23, starting with a discussion about new information technologies for tent and event rental. Michael Holland, Chattanooga Tent Co., described his company’s integration of Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) technology into the inventory management processes. Alexandre Renaud, Fiesta Tents Ltd., offered an overview of his company’s experience with web-based staff tracking software. Doug Fabian, a product specialist with Verizon Connect, discussed the benefits of GPS and fleet management software solutions.

In the day’s second session, Michael Tharpe, Rainier Industries Ltd., and Nick Deninno, B&R Innovations, discussed safe anchoring and ballasting, covering topics that ranged from tips for getting crew members to wear their personal protective gear, to common staking and ballasting issues, to a ballasting verses staking case study.

At the Tent Rental Division (TRD) business meeting, outgoing board chairman Brian Richardson, L&A Tent Rentals Inc., handed over the reins to vice chairman Michael Tharpe and was honored with the IFAI Outstanding Volunteer Award. Steve Belliveau, Anchor Industries, is the new vice chairman. TRD also welcomed new board members Nick Deninno; Zach Wilson, Greenwich Tent Co.; and Joe Langehaug, Losberger De Boer.

Under sunny skies, the TRD Experience saw 12 teams of eight zipping around the ranch on golf carts to be the first team to complete 16 challenges and be named “IFAI Tent Masters.” The ranch experience reached its pinnacle Thursday evening with a private rodeo featuring bull riding, barrel racing and trick riding. TRD board members even got into the ring, vying to be the first to remove a ribbon from a ferocious bull (in reality, a calf).

Friday, Jan. 24, brought more education, starting with a town hall discussion on labor issues. Chad V. Sorenson, president of Adaptive HR Solutions, presented strategies for attracting and keeping employees, including suggestions for finding employees through nontraditional labor sources.

The conference concluded with an update on the code development process from TRD code consultant Paul Armstrong, P.E., C.B.O. Armstrong discussed code changes related to tents and temporary structures in the 2018 I-codes, which are being adopted by jurisdictions now; the 2021 I-codes, which have been voted on and are being prepared for publication by the International Code Council; and the outlook for tents in the code revision process for the 2024 I-codes. First-time attendee Jill Weis of Cartwright & Daughters Tent and Party Rental said she attended the conference to keep updated on the tent industry and to learn from the seminars.

“I had several takeaways from each of the seminars, which is always beneficial for growth,” she said. “But of course, the best part is meeting and getting to know others in the industry that have a true passion for it. Looking forward to attending next year’s Expo.”

As tent professionals said their good-byes and began to head home, Richardson remarked on the success of the event.

“I think it’s one of the best industry events I’ve ever been to,” he said. “The rodeo was great, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of our sponsors and all those who attended. It was a special three days for us here at Westgate River Ranch.”

Egy Stitch & Tex 2020: Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Makes Its Mark On The African Market — Focus On Carpet Yarns

REMSCHEID, Germany — January 30, 2020 — The Oerlikon Manmade Fibers segment will be present at the Egy Stitch & Tex 2020 — to be held in Cairo March 5-8, 2020 — with a clear focus on the needs of the African market. The Oerlikon Barmag and Oerlikon Neumag experts will also be showcasing the comprehensive product and service portfolio of the world market leader for manmade fiber systems at the stand of Oerlikon’s representative ATAG Export & Import in Hall 1, Stand B2.

The spotlight of the Oerlikon Manmade Fibers segment’s trade fair attendance will be on two core technologies: the new generation of Oerlikon Barmag eAFK Evo texturing machines is to be unveiled within the African market for the very first time. It promises higher speeds and productivity with consistently high product quality, along with lower energy consumption and simpler operation vis-à-vis comparable market solutions. In particular, the numerous value-added features include two that convince with cutting-edge technology: the optimized, innovative EvoHeater and the EvoCooler, a completely newly-developed active cooling unit.

The second technology focus offers new opportunities for the Egyptian market and the Middle Eastern markets in particular: with Oerlikon Neumag’s BCF S8 monocolor and tricolor system, the segment will be unveiling its new carpet yarn production flagship. Superlative spinning speeds, up to 700 individual filaments, finer titers of up to 2.5 dpf — the performance data and technological finesse of the new system have already made a huge impression at numerous trade fairs and roadshows over the past year. The tricolor’s core component is the new, patent-pending Color Pop Compacting unit (CPC-T) for even more flexible and more even color separation. With the CPC-T, individually-controllable air pressures for each color provide pre-tangling, which accentuates the colors and hence makes more than 200,000 different shades possible. Whereas it has been very difficult to manufacture strongly color-separated or color-accentuated BCF yarns from polyamide 6 to date, this will in future be possible thanks to the CPC-T system. As a result of the new design, the CPC-T is now also suitable for processes with low yarn tensions.

Expanded product offering for manufacturing carpet yarns

Know-how covering all relevant technologies deployed in man-made fiber spinning plants enables Oerlikon — as the world’s only manufacturer — to expand its range of products and services for making carpet yarns. The POY- and texturing-based system concept is designed for a carpet and home textiles segment that demands particularly soft and bulky polyester yarns with BCF-like properties. Here, the aim is to produce yarns with titers of max. 1,300 dtex and typically more than 1,000 filaments, with typical products including, for example, 1,300 dtex f1152, 660 dtex f1152 and 990 dtex f768. The machine concept comprises the well-known WINGS HD POY winder, along with the eAFK Big-V texturing machine.

INDEX™ 2020 Exhibitor Preview: DiloGroup

EBERBACH, Germany — January 30, 2020 — The international nonwovens industry meets again in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 31 to April 3, 2020, on the occasion of INDEX, the forum for the nonwovens industry. DiloGroup offers tailor-made production systems from one supplier and will inform on booth # 2010 about its portfolio and the latest equipment developments from fibre opening to the finished felt.

A new, simplified elliptical needle beam drive makes Hyperpunch technology also attractive for standard application. Hyperpunch HαV allows a more uniform stitch distribution in the preneedling process especially in combination with the new needle pattern 6000X. In a complete needling line this felt homogenization process can be improved further. The new needle pattern 8000X is a milestone in the needle pattern development process and results in end product surfaces with low markings over a wide range of advances/stroke.

The 3D-Lofter which was first presented during ITMA 2019 in Barcelona offers a wider range of nonwovens applications by exploring the third dimension. A series of single web forming units which work according to the aerodynamic web forming principle deliver defined fiber masses in varied patterns on a base needlefelt. A stress oriented production of technical formed parts resulting in fiber savings or patterned DI-LOUR or DI-LOOP felts without repeat are two examples for this technology which explores new application areas for needlefelts.

The 3D-Lofter technology may also be used “inverted” for filling up bad spots in web mats and thus achieves a better homogeneity of spunlace or airlay products.

The DiloLine 4.0 concept offer I4.0 modules which not only support the user but also facilitate quality control and maintenance by a maximum data transparency in production and control of operation. The Dilo solutions “Smart Start” for a fully automatic start of the production line or “DI-LOWATT” for energy savings are accompanied by Siemens solutions which can be selected via App or Data Cloud “MindSphere”.

With more than 370 installations delivered to the nonwovens industry worldwide, DiloGroup has the necessary know-how and the complete equipment portfolio to engineer the perfect production line for any product specification. The efficiency of Dilo production lines is the result of long-term research work and experience.

Apart from machines for needling technology we offer in cooperation with partner companies also production lines including thermobonding and hydroentangling components.

We look forward to welcoming you at our booth # 2010 during INDEX.

Burlington Expands No Fly Zone® Insect Repellent Licensing In Canada: Mark’s The First Retailer To Sell In Canada

GREENSBORO, N.C. — January 29, 2020 — Burlington, a global diversified provider of textile solutions, is pleased to announce that it has expanded the licensing of its No Fly Zone® Insect Repellent Technology into Canada and to announce Mark’s as the first licensee and retailer in Canada to sell garments protected by the proprietary No Fly Zone mosquito repellent technology. No Fly Zone technology has been available in the US and other regions globally for a number of years. Burlington and Mark’s collaborated and successfully navigated a complicated process to receive government approval for the technology to be sold in Canada.

“We are excited to welcome Mark’s to the No Fly Zone family,” says Nelson Bebo, vice president, Burlington Performance Fabrics. “Mark’s is known for innovation and has been a leader in introducing new products and technology in Canada for decades.”

Burlington’s No Fly Zone technology offers distinct advantages over other repellent technologies. No Fly Zone Insect Repellent Technology is a permethrin-based chemistry that helps convert apparel, uniforms or gear into long-lasting, effective and convenient mosquito and tick protection. It works as a contact repellent affecting the insect’s nervous system causing them to fly or crawl away before a bite can occur.

Bebo continued: “Protecting against mosquito and tick bites is increasingly important, especially for combating the disease they can carry. Apparel can be a first line of defense when walking and hiking in tall grass or heavily wooded areas or other every day activities. The No Fly Zone technology is applied directly to the fabric or other material which increases the durability and consistency of the repellency and provides the wearer with greater protection, plus it can be matrixed with other performance technologies such as moisture wicking, UPF protection and odor neutralizing action.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as PMRA and Health Canada report an increased number of mosquito and tick-borne diseases. CDC and PMRA recommend the use of products and pretreated clothing that contain permethrin. The technology can be applied to polyester, nylon, cotton, wool and aramids and is durable for up to 70 home launderings.

For more information about No Fly Zone and licensing opportunities visit us at www.burlingtonfabrics.com or see us at the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show, January 29-31, 30078-UL. Come explore our many performance fabric technologies and discover what our fabrics can do for you.
