Unitex Plants Earn Hygienically Clean Healthcare Certification

ALEXANDRIA, Va.  — August 10, 2020 — Unitex Textile Rental Services Inc.’s Hartford, Conn. (Meadow Street) and Linden, N.J., plants have earned Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification, reflecting their commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and their capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing. These locations join five other Unitex facilities — Ledyard Street, Hartford, Conn.; two in New Brunswick and Linden, N.J.; and two in New York — Mt. Vernon and Newburgh — that also hold the certification. Unitex is a 90-plus year family-owned and managed healthcare launderer, serving the U.S. mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.

Hygienically Clean is the quantified, validated standard and measure for hygienically clean textiles in North America since 2011, and achieving this certification reflects their commitment to best management practices (BMPs) in laundering as verified by on-site inspection and their capability to produce hygienically clean textiles as quantified by ongoing microbial testing based on established hygienically clean healthcare textile methods and standards.

The Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification confirms the organization’s continuing dedication to infection prevention, compliance with recognized industry standards and processing healthcare textiles using BMPs as described in its quality assurance documentation, a focal point for Hygienically Clean inspectors’ evaluation. The independent, third-party inspection must also confirm essential evidence that:

  • Employees are properly trained and protected;
  • Managers understand regulatory requirements;
  • OSHA-compliant; and
  • Physical plant operates effectively.

To achieve certification initially, laundries pass three rounds of outcome-based microbial testing, indicating that their processes are producing Hygienically Clean Healthcare textiles and diminished presence of yeast, mold and harmful bacteria. They also must pass a facility inspection. To maintain their certification, they must pass quarterly RODAC and semi-annual USP 62 testing (RODAC results less than or equal to 20 cfu per square diameter and USP 62 results must show an absence of specified microorganisms) to ensure that as laundry conditions change, such as water quality, textile fabric composition and wash chemistry, laundered product quality is consistently maintained. Re-inspection occurs every two to three years.

This process eliminates subjectivity by focusing on outcomes and results that verify textiles cleaned in these facilities meet appropriate hygienically clean standards and BMPs for hospitals, surgery centers, medical offices, nursing homes and other medical facilities.

Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification acknowledges laundries’ effectiveness in protecting healthcare operations by verifying quality control procedures in linen, uniform and facility services operations related to the handling of textiles containing blood and other potentially infectious materials.

Certified laundries use processes, chemicals and BMPs acknowledged by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, American National Standards Institute and others. Introduced by TRSA in 2012, Hygienically Clean Healthcare brought to North America the international cleanliness standards for Hygienically Clean healthcare linens and garments used worldwide by the Certification Association for Professional Textile Services and the European Committee for Standardization

Objective experts in epidemiology, infection control, nursing and other healthcare professions work with Hygienically Clean launderers to ensure the certification continues to enforce the highest standards for producing clean healthcare textiles.

“Congratulations to Unitex on their certifications,” said Joseph Ricci, TRSA president and CEO. “This achievement proves their commitment to infection prevention and that their laundries take every step possible to prevent human illness.”

Hygienically Clean reflects the evolution of healthcare laundry certification in light of growing global concerns about infection control, documenting practices that ensure elimination of potentially harmful microbial content while adding quantifiable verification of continuous improvement in overall cleanliness.

The National Retail Federation: Retail Imports To See Lowest Annual Total In Four Years

WASHINGTON — August 7, 2020 — Imports at major U.S. retail container ports during 2020 are expected to see their lowest total in four years as the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the U.S. economy continues, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.

“The economy is recovering but retailers are being careful not to import more than they can sell,” NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan Gold said. “Shelves will be stocked, but this is not the year to be left with warehouses full of unsold merchandise. The more Congress does to put spending money in consumers’ pockets and provide businesses with liquidity, the sooner we can get back to normal.”

U.S. ports covered by Global Port Tracker handled 1.61 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units in June, the latest month for which after-the-fact numbers are available. That was up 4.9 percent from May but down 10.5 percent year-over-year. A TEU is one 20-foot-long cargo container or its equivalent.

July was estimated at 1.76 million TEU, down 10.2 percent year-over-year. August is forecast at 1.81 million TEU, down 7.3 percent; September at 1.69 million TEU, down 9.5 percent; October also at 1.69 million TEU, down 10.4 percent; November at 1.59 million TEU, down 5.8 percent, and December at 1.56 million TEU, down 9.6 percent.

Those numbers would bring 2020 to a total of 19.6 million TEU, a drop of 9.4 percent from last year and the lowest annual total since 19.1 million TEU in 2016. The first half of 2020 totaled 9.5 million TEU, down 10.1 percent from last year.

August is expected to be the busiest month of the July-October “peak season” when retailers rush to bring in merchandise for the winter holidays. But with retailers ordering less merchandise, the month’s total would be the lowest peak for the season since 1.73 million TEU in 2016 and falls far short of the 1.96 million TEU peak in 2019. Peak season usually includes the busiest month of the entire year, but this year that was likely January’s 1.82 million TEU.

“This year, peak season seems to have been thrown off by the coronavirus pandemic along with just about everything else we consider normal,” Hackett Associates Founder Ben Hackett said. “We’ve probably already had our busiest month. And with the pandemic taking a hit on the economy ever since then, peak season is likely to be a disappointment by comparison.”

Global Port Tracker, which is produced for NRF by the consulting firm Hackett Associates, provides historical data and forecasts for the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma on the West Coast; New York/New Jersey, Port of Virginia, Charleston, Savannah, Port Everglades, Miami and Jacksonville on the East Coast, and Houston on the Gulf Coast.

State Of North Carolina Has Distributed 3.5 Million Cloth Face Coverings, 4.5 Million Procedure Masks And Additional PPE Supplies Across The State

RALEIGH, NC — August 6, 2020 — The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the N.C. Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management (NCEM) has distributed approximately 3.5 million cloth face coverings, 4.5 million procedure masks, and significant amounts of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) to targeted settings across the state. The ongoing PPE shipments support operations including schools, nursing homes, first responders, agricultural facilities, child care facilities and courthouses.

“North Carolina has taken aggressive steps to get personal protective equipment in the hands of those who need it,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “Making sure students, teachers, nursing homes and more have what they need to stay safe is a top priority as we battle this pandemic.”

“We’re distributing face coverings and other personal protective equipment in targeted settings to help North Carolinians practice the 3 Ws — Wear, Wait, Wash — and slow the spread of COVID-19,” said NCDHHS Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen.

“It is important that we decisively procure and distribute PPE to support our critical infrastructure and public safety and healthcare partners statewide to ensure that we are maintaining our focus on prevention,” said North Carolina Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry.

NCDHHS and NCEM distribute PPE across many of the state’s targeted COVID-19 response initiatives. In total, the state has already distributed more than 7 million pairs of gloves, 650,000 face shields, 600,000 shoe covers, and 100,000 units of hand sanitizer in addition to 3.5 million cloth face coverings and 4.5 million procedure masks.

In late July, NCDHHS and NCEM completed an initial shipment of PPE and supplies to farms and agricultural operations, including over 900,000 masks. Future PPE shipments will reach farmworkers, farmers, and other agriculture workers in targeted settings such as NC Cooperative Extensions, NC Farmworkers Health Programs, meat packing plants, and community organizations.

Earlier in July, NCDHHS, NCEM and NC National Guard completed an initial PPE shipment to North Carolina’s more than 3,000 state-licensed long-term care facilities and also completed the first shipment of face coverings for visitors to North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts (NCAOC) facilities. Moving forward, NCAOC facilities will receive approximately 300,000 face coverings per month from NCDHHS for public distribution.

Also in July, NCDHHS sent cleaning supplies and PPE including face coverings, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant to each of the state’s approximately 4,200 currently-open child care programs. Child care programs have been open with additional health requirements throughout the pandemic, providing an essential service to other frontline workers.

Since June, NCDHHS, NCEM, and the NC National Guard have been distributing PPE Starter Packs to school nurses and health care staff in anticipation of the upcoming academic year. Initial shipments being delivered to each school include a two-month supply of disposable masks, gowns, thermometers, and face shields. NCDHHS and NCEM has also begun additional PPE projects to support schools, including distribution of five reusable face coverings to each student, teacher, and staff member in North Carolina public schools that will be offering in-person instruction. The state has also provided face coverings to private schools offering in-person instruction.

Additional venues for targeted PPE distribution include NCDHHS-funded no-cost testing sites offered through the Community testing in High-priority And Marginalized Populations (CHAMP) Initiative, where contracted vendors are required to offer face coverings to individuals who present without one.

U.S. Medical Textile Products Manufacturer Announces DermaSaver Sci-Tex Face Mask Proven Highly Effective In An Independent Laboratory Virus Blocking Test

CANTON, Mass. — August 7, 2020 — With the increase in face covering mandates and concerns over getting and spreading Covid-19, there is a proliferation of masks and face coverings offered to the general public with little proof of their effectiveness.

Ed Goodwin, the founder and product development manager of HipSaver Inc., has always obtained scientific validation for all of his medical textile products. He engaged Nelson Laboratories, a leading, global testing lab specializing in expert advisory and testing solutions for medical device and biologics companies, to test the DermaSaver Sci-Tex Mask construction.

The Viral Filtration Efficacy (VFE) test they conducted showed the DermaSaver Sci-Tex Mask material construction to be an average of 91.8-percent effective in preventing aerosolized virus particles from penetrating through the mask. The virus particles tested are five times smaller than Covid-19 virus particles, implying that the efficacy against preventing Covid-19 virus particles from penetration could be even greater. Nelson Labs full report can be viewed at dermasaver.com.

“We believed our product would be effective based on the known textile science, and now these results from Nelson Labs have proven that to be true,” Goodwin said. “Virus transmission experts agree that exposure duration and dose volume of virus particles are two key factors in overwhelming the immune system. This test result shows a dramatic reduction in the dose volume exposure.”

Consumers who have used the DermaSaver Sci-Tex mask have raved about its light weight and comfort and now they can be assured that they are not sacrificing protection for comfort.

The mask which retails for less than $20, consists of two layers of water resistant (hydrophobic) microfiber polyester that repels airborne droplets unlike hydrophilic cotton. The brushed inside surfaces of the layers mesh together to create an additional barrier.

Additional features include:

  • All lightweight fabric construction is totally machine washable and dryable — more than 200 times;
  • Nose bridge insert molds to the face to reduces eyeglass fogging;
  • Soft stretch ear bands for no abrasive, cutting or hard contact surfaces;
  • Adjustable ear bands for a perfect fit and gap-free perimeter seal for maximum protection;
  • No latex or chemical finishes;
  • Average, petite and children’s sizes available;
  • Breathable without using potentially hazardous non-filtered exhalation valves; and
  • No filters to buy and replace.

Founded in 1995, HipSaver Inc. is an FDA registered small business and medical textile products manufacturer located in Norwood, Mass. HipSaver designs, develops and manufactures more than 30 unique products including HipSaver hip protectors and DermaSaver skin protection & pressure reduction products.
