Sustainable Apparel Coalition, Higg Launch New Program For Publicly Sharing Data On A Product’s Environmental Impact: Amazon, H&M, Norrona Among First To Participate

SAN FRANCISCO/AMSTERDAM — May 27, 2021 — Today, the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), a global multi-stakeholder nonprofit alliance for the consumer goods industry, along with its technology partner Higg, launched the first phase of a transparency program for publicly sharing data on a product’s environmental impact, starting with its materials content. The program provides a consistent way for brands, retailers, and manufacturers to share sustainability information on apparel and footwear products, across impact categories such as water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and use of fossil fuels. Built on a decade’s worth of tool development, consumer testing, and contributed environmental impact data, this first phase of the Higg Index transparency program is an important step toward a unified approach for industry-wide transparency – in order to provide shoppers with unprecedented visibility into a product’s real impact.

The main components of the program are the Higg Index Sustainability Profile and the Higg Index Materials seal, both of which are based on independent and externally reviewed environmental impact data from the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI). SAC members Amazon, Boozt, C&A, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger (owned by PVH Corp.), Columbia Sportswear, H&M, Helly Hansen, JustWears, Lenzing AG, Norrona, PUMA, Salomon, and Zalando announced their commitment to implement the first phase of the program on a wide selection of products available in the U.S. and Europe, ranging from tops and skirts, to backpacks and purses. At launch, the program will focus on the environmental impact of a product’s materials, and will expand over the next two years to incorporate additional data including manufacturing and corporate responsibility.

A primary component of the program is the Higg Index Sustainability Profile, which is a new scorecard for sharing data on a product’s environmental impact. Beginning today, H&M and Norrona will embed Higg Index Sustainability Profiles on their e-commerce platforms in the U.S. and Europe, with plans to scale up to additional products throughout the year. Participation in the program supports H&M’s longstanding transparency ambition to help consumers make more informed choices. C&A, Salomon, Tommy Hilfiger, and Zalando plan to implement Sustainability Profiles on their platforms in the coming months. Simultaneously, Amazon announced the addition of the Higg Index Materials seal to its list of trusted certifications for its Climate Pledge Friendly program, which helps make it easy for customers across the U.S. and Europe to discover and shop for more sustainable products.

“Transparency itself is not the end game, but it’s a critical step for transforming the industry and establishing a new era of accountability,” said Amina Razvi, SAC executive director. “By leveraging the Higg Index — starting first with environmental data and then expanding to include social impacts — we can help both businesses and consumers make better decisions, and drive collective action at scale.”

This first phase will focus on evaluating material environmental impacts, leveraging data from the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI), part of the Higg Index suite of sustainability measurement tools developed by the SAC. The Higg MSI is a tool used by designers, product developers, and analysts to understand the costs, benefits, and tradeoffs of different materials that serve the same functional purpose for a product (for instance, comparing a recycled fiber to its conventional version). Using the Higg MSI helps companies create products with a lower environmental impact — and now brands and retailers can share information on impact reduction with customers in an accessible and credible way.

During the course of the program’s development, a stakeholder expert panel, consisting of academics and NGOs, has provided objective feedback, insights, and recommendations on the program, and the process was facilitated and managed by an independent third-party to ensure objectivity in engagement and input. Over the next 18 months, the transparency program will expand to incorporate environmental facility data through the Higg Facility Environmental Module (FEM) as well as brand and retail operations data through the Higg Brand & Retail Module (BRM). By early 2023, the program will have expanded to incorporate social data from facilities, becoming the first holistic system for communicating sustainability performance across a product’s lifecycle.

“Change demands real performance data that indicates how well a brand, a supply chain, a product, or a material performs compared to others,” said Jason Kibbey, CEO of Higg. “With the Higg Index established as the industry’s common methodology, our technology can now provide that data out to the public in a consistent and clear way. We aim to serve both concerned shoppers as well as responsible businesses, both of whom are looking for better information to make more sustainable choices.”

“Fiber production is at the very beginning of the supply chain and sets the tone for transparency through to the end product. The growing transparency demands of brands and their consumers requires manufacturers to achieve certifiable standards that authenticate their sustainability efforts,” said Robert van de Kerkhof, member of the board of Lenzing. “Lenzing, as the first wood-based fiber producer to have Higg approval for Amazon products, is supporting brands and retailers using TENCEL™ branded products through an authentic verification process in issuing new product licenses. We remain committed to greening up the supply chain and are excited about the opportunities that this new transparency program brings.”

In the last decade, interest in sustainability has grown, and consumers today are expecting increased accountability and transparency from brands and retailers. With the completion of the Higg Index suite of tools and the rollout of the first phase of their transparency program, the SAC and Higg are now able to provide consumers with relevant information that can help them make more informed purchases. While the Higg Index tools continue to evolve with the latest science and technology, they are currently the most comprehensive and widely adopted value chain sustainability measurement tools in the industry. Through this launch, the SAC, Higg, and their launch partners will continue to learn and improve both the Higg Index tools and the transparency program, to not only address current gaps and opportunities, but also evolving consumer, stakeholder, and government demands over time.

“The Higg Index suite of tools delivers unparalleled sustainability performance information, enabling the apparel and footwear industry to evolve to a more sustainable industry,” said Sean Cady, chair of the SAC board of directors and vice president of Global Sustainability, Responsibility and Trade for VF Corp. “We recognize that a significant amount of the industry’s impact takes place during the extraction and processing of raw materials. Across the industry, an objective, robust and accurate dataset is needed to enable sustainable material choices at scale. Through the use of the Higg Index, our industry has the tools, the opportunity, and the responsibility to elevate sustainable business decisions for the betterment of people and our planet. We encourage the rest of the industry to join us as we strive to create a more sustainable future.”

There is an urgent need for the industry to come together, particularly when it comes to collecting data. While the Higg Index tools represent incredible industry progress towards sustainability performance measurement, better data will continue to strengthen and improve these tools over time. The SAC and its members call on the various material industries to help build the most robust, current database possible, which will ensure increased data accuracy. By investing time and resources in gathering better environmental impact data, we can empower consumers to make more informed decisions about what they buy.

Transparency is essential to driving systemic change for a healthier planet and is one of the four core focus areas in the SAC’s new strategic plan. By 2025, the SAC is aiming to achieve 100-percent member participation in public-facing ratings of sustainable performance that are credible and trusted. This transparency program launch marks the beginning of a journey toward achieving that ambitious goal, providing a credible standard to unify how sustainability information is shared. Now, the fashion industry can rally behind this trusted data-backed solution for end-to-end performance reporting and help consumers make more informed choices.

High price-performance machines for markets with strong demand

Warp Knitting

The HKS 3-M ON, 280″, sets new standards in warp knitting in terms of output and flexibility. At 2,500 min-1, the innovative HKS model is around 15% faster than its predecessor with the same working width and, thanks to the width expansion, even more productive than the narrower 210″ version. Despite its high speed, the HKS 3-M ON offers the diverse patterning possibilities of the EL pattern drives. The basis is the new electromechanical guide bar control and the secure networking of the machine via the k.ey industrial computer with a cloud. From here, pattern data is loaded directly onto the machine, without production delays and handling effort. The patterning potential can be easily adapted to current market needs through different business models. Among them one variant for pattern repeats over 36 stitch courses which uses KM.ON’s web-based k.innovation CORE software. The newly launched k.management dashboard from KM.ON can also be used to call up all important machine key figures independently of time and on the move. The overview creates transparency for quick decisions and efficient planning.

The digital solutions can be tried out at the HKS 3-M ON or at the KM.ON flagship store on the KARL MAYER trade fair stand. Other highlights include k.innovation STYLE for the collaborative creation of designs in cross-divisional teams and the new Paperless Solutions, which digitally document machine runs and fabric quality. The digital reports are stored securely in the cloud. This replaces paper management with often illegible data and enables fast, authorized access to values that are always up to date.

Flat Knitting

The STOLL flat knitting machines of the KARL MAYER Group ensure maximum efficiency and productivity in flat knitting production with the knitelligence® Industry 4.0 platform. The modular system with its software solutions ensures a high degree of automation throughout the value chain. For the creative process, the new design software k.innovation CREATE will be launched in Shanghai. For the offering, STOLL and KM.ON – two successful brands of the KARL MAYER Group – have combined their expertise and creativity to significantly simplify design development and speed up programming.

Further modules of knitelligence® are k.innovation CREATE PLUS, which combines an innovative programming system with an easy-to-learn user interface for optimum utilization of knitting potential, and a production planning system (PPS) for rational management of all processes. During the leading trade fair, three networked knitelligence® flat knitting machines will be demonstrating the performance of the platform: two ADF models and a new BMS for the commodity market.

The new BMS 52 ki impresses with the proven quality of STOLL, extremely high performance and minimal costs. Using digital solutions from knitelligence®, the newcomer will be producing individualized front parts for a children’s sweater in a completely automated process during the trade show. The designs and knitting program are created with the k.innovation CREATE PLUS.

The tried-and-tested ADF family has been further improved to meet market requirements. New is the ADF 830-24 ki knit & wear in the unique gauge of E 10.2. With the high needle pitch, the model exhibited in Shanghai produces fine STOLL-knit and wear® products with intarsia, inverse plating and STOLL-ikat plating® and woven looks with STOLL-weave-in® Technology. The gauge of E 10.2 will now be available for almost all STOLL machines.

In addition, the ADF portfolio has been expanded to include a variant with a 36ʺ working width. An ADF 330 ki will be presented in Shanghai for this purpose. This model is available as variant with 24 or 32 yarn guides and with STOLL-weave-in® device. During the trade fair, it will be producing a customizable footwear article in a multi-gauge of E9.2. The seamless knitted 3D shoe upper is optimally prepared for a low-confection downstream process in footwear production.

Warp Prepration

In the warp preparation weaving sector, the ISODIRECT presents itself as an efficient beam warping machine for the mid-range segment with an excellent price/performance ratio. The innovative model processes all spun yarns, reaches a warping speed of up to 1,000 m/min and can be operated with simple hand movements. The beams produced are absolutely cylindrical in design, precisely wound and completely identical in terms of warp lengths. A computer-controlled measuring system allows deviations of only 0.15% maximum. With the high-quality ISODIRECT beams, the machines in the weaving mill can fully develop their efficiency potential.

Care Solutions – After sales of the digital generation for maximum competitiveness

In the Care Solutions sector, KARL MAYER is using the possibilities offered by digitization to provide after-sales support at a completely new level.

A newly developed dashboard now makes it possible to book and use support services individually in the simplest way, in a targeted manner, and without any ambiguous communication.

Support from experts, tools for spare parts management and online service offers can be used. Specific products of the Care Solutions dashboard for this are the proven WEBSHOP for easy spare parts ordering, a health check for inspecting the machine, as well as online after-sales tools for immediate troubleshooting of the machine remotely and for expert support. There is also a button to access videos that provide machine and technological know-how. Assistance videos and e-learnings will follow in this area.

A prerequisite for utilizing the clear customer benefits from the diverse offers is the networking of the machines via k.ey.

Textile solutions for the trends of our time

Chic Knitted Goods With Function And Sustainability

For comfortable fashion and loungewear, KARL MAYER presents trendy textile patterns and chic garments with important product attributes of our time: smart, casual and environmentally friendly.

For more sustainability, recycled PES and PA yarns can be processed on all KARL MAYER’s current machines, without compromising on speed and product quality. In addition, warp knitting can do without sizing. With less water, chemicals and energy than generally used in weaving, woven-fabric-like articles can be produced, as demonstrated by a chic denim-style dress. The textile for this was created on a WEFT.FASHION TM 3 and consists of 73% yarn-dyed, coarse natural fiber flame yarn.

Fine woven-fabric-like materials, e.g. for men’s shirts, can also be produced on warp knitting machines. One example is a lightweight article completely made from polyester for full recycling, which offers natural comfort-stretch, breathability and wear without wrinkling.

Less waste and more comfort is also the goal of close-to-contour manufacturing. What is possible in this regard is demonstrated by a sporty fully fashion top from a RDPJ 6/2 EL that was made with seamless technology and free-cut fabrication, thus managing without seams.

TERRY.ECO, the highly productive and sustainable production of terry products, also has something new to offer. For the first time, a super-soft terry article made of absorbent bamboo fibers on the inside and ultra-soft microfiber polyester on the outside has been processed on a TM 4-TS EL to create a casual loungewear.

The textile show is rounded off by trendy lace fashion and by new, innovative 3D crinkle articles. The fabrics produced on a HKS 4-M EL were created using a yarn mix of polyamide and only partially drawn-in wrapping yarn.

Eye-catchers for guests from the flat knitting sector are likely to be the extravagant fashion items from the current STOLL collection “FASTER: From(CONCEPT)–To(STORE “. In addition, a joint project for the production of sustainable mouth-nose masks will be presented.

Sustainable Production Of Woven Fabrics in Indigo Blue with Greendye

In the denim sector, a collection of trendy jeans articles demonstrates the performance of KARL MAYER’s environmentally friendly nitrogen technology for indigo dyeing. The dye content of the deep blue GREENDYE textiles is 1.5 to 2.7%. To achieve it, the cotton raw material went through three dye troughs instead of the usual six. This saves liquor volume and thus water or wastewater and chemicals. In addition, less yarn waste is produced, and the dye is better fixed.

Well on the way with Knitted Geotextiles and Construction Textiles

The exhibits of KARL MAYER Technische Textilien at ITMA ASIA + CITME will focus on infrastructure and construction. In particular, the wide range of articles for the renovation of pipes, the implementation of roofing systems, the reinforcement of roadways and for use as plaster grids are proving to be bestsellers in China. KARL MAYER Technische Textilien is also looking forward to many discussions about the new BIAXTRONIC® II. This warp knitting machine with weft insertion has been optimized in terms of its price/performance ratio, and has already successfully been presented to key customers in the run-up to the fair.

Laura Coppen, head of Circularity at Zalando, said: “We are excited to join the ACPE Steering Committee to advance the industry in the ‘end of life’ product stage. With our reach as a platform, we can contribute to scaling circular textile systems and move away from linear to circular business practices. To do that we need to collaborate across the industry to scale solutions quickly, and we believe this project does just that. Our circularity strategy aims to integrate the principles of circularity into our business, with our brand partners and for our customers. We aim to ensure that products don’t end up in landfill or are incinerated and we see this project as a great way to learn and build better systems in the long term.”

Chief Sustainability Officer at Recover™ Helene Smits stated: “Recover™ believes that scalability is one of the main challenges of a circular textile industry, and we have included it as a core pillar of our strategy. Accelerating Circularity Europe can be a strong facilitator of this initiative and we are very enthusiastic to be a founding member of the ACPE Steering Committee.”

Speaking about Reverse Resources’ decision to join the Steering Committee, Sales Marketing Lead Marieke Koemans-Kokkelink added, “Creating a European-wide collaboration enables us to digitally follow (and improve) the textile material flows through circulation.”

ITMA ASIA + CITME 2020 Exhibitor Preview: Mahlo

SAAL, Germany — May 7, 2021 — When ITMA Asia opens its doors in Shanghai on June 12, Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG together with Shanghai Kuantex will present the latest systems and solutions for efficient and high-quality textile production and finishing at booth H6-A08.

In the textile industry, the name Mahlo stands for high-quality automatic straightening and process control systems. The recipe for success of the experts from Germany is more than 75 years of experience paired with the latest technological developments. At ITMA Asia 2021, the company will remain true to this strategy and present the latest developments in the field of straightening and process control. At the Mahlo booth, the latest generation of the Orthopac RVMC-15 weft straightening system or the Qualiscan QMS-12 quality measuring system will show why they strengthen every textile production line.

The straightener’s opto-electronic scanning for distortion detection with oscillating lens and newly revised DSP (digital signal processor) is probably the most sensitive and versatile system on the market. Arranged on a carrier bridge, several of these sensors, evenly distributed across the width, detect the position of the weft yarn simultaneously at different points. The scanning system detects and analyzes the angular position of weft yarns, stitches or tufting rows. An intelligent control algorithm with self-optimization function, together with the hydraulic or electric roller positioning adapted to it, ensures that all fabric distortions are removed reliably in the process. Even the most complicated fabric structures pose no problem. Scanning systems for special fabric structures are available as an alternative to standard scanning. Even scanning and warp correction of patterned fabrics (lace, jacquard, print, terry cloth) is possible without any problems.

Visitors to test fabric samples

Also contributing to high-quality textile production and finishing is the Famacont PMC for controlling weft and stitch course density, which will also be on show at ITMA Asia. The Famacont PMC-15 uses a sensor to measure the yarn or stitch density and compares it with the target value stored in the recipe data management system. The detected deviation of the yarn density from the target value is used to fully automatically regulate the leading during the needling process on the stenter frame. Interested parties can have the mode of operation explained to them at the Mahlo booth with the help of a demo tower and their own or provided fabric samples.

Full speed on the data highway

The knowledgeable audience at ITMA Asia can also immerse themselves in Mahlo’s digital world and get to know the new mPilot control room software and the mLog data analysis tool. This allows measurement data to be stored, logged and evaluated. Both systems are part of the mSmart concept that defines Mahlo’s digital environment. An important building block for the future: Because only those who take the path along the data highway will be able to remain competitive and produce efficiently in the future.

Inspired by these four principles, our R&D team has been developing some really exciting innovations that will be displayed at ITMA ASIA + CITME. These include two airjet weaving machines, four rapier weaving machines for flat fabrics, as well as one rapier machine for weaving terry towel. Furthermore, there will be an additional rapier machine in jacquard execution at the Bonas booth,” commented Johan Verstraete, vice president Weaving Machines.

In addition to displaying the many innovations made to its range of both airjet and rapier machines, Picanol will also be premiering two new rapier machines: the brand new GTMax-i 3.0S will be shown in a 4 color dobby execution, weaving a denim style, whereas the new GTMax-S on display will be an 8 color dobby machine in 380 cm reed width weaving a silk fabric.

Picanol will also be demonstrating an OptiMax-i gripper machine in free flight execution of 540 cm width at the exhibition. This represents a significant innovation breakthrough for specific technical segments.

Domtar Corp. To Expand Wayne County, Ga., Manufacturing Facility Creating 75 Jobs

ATLANTA — May 17, 2021 — Today Governor Brian P. Kemp announced that Domtar Corp. will invest more than $60 million to expand its Engineered Absorbent Materials (EAM) manufacturing operations in Jesup, Ga., delivering 75 additional jobs to Wayne County.

“I thank Georgia-based EAM Corporation for continuing to create jobs and opportunities for the hardworking Georgians of Wayne County,” Governor Kemp said. “The state’s pipeline of highly trained talent has helped the No. 1 state for business continue to attract solid jobs for all Georgians, regardless of zip code.”

Domtar’s EAM facility in Jesup has been developing and manufacturing innovative, high-quality absorbent core solutions since 1998. The expansion will help Domtar grow its airlaid nonwoven business, which has become essential to hygiene product manufacturers across the globe. The project will add an additional large-scale production line to the EAM facility that will supply both domestic and global customers, increasing its exports through the Port of Savannah by 60 percent, adding approximately 500 containers to its annual exports.

“Domtar is pleased to partner with the State of Georgia to expand our facility,” said EAM Operations Director Kim Sumner. “The project will play an integral role in helping Domtar establish a global absorbent materials and technology business that includes pulp and airlaid materials, strengthening our value proposition as an essential partner to absorbent hygiene customers around the globe.”

The company previously expanded its Jesup operations in 2014, and currently employs approximately 90 Georgians. Once the expansion is complete, the company will employ more than 160 people in southeast Georgia. New positions at the facility will include careers in operations, warehousing, logistics, and supervision. Individuals interested in opportunities with Domtar are encouraged to visit domtar.com/careers for additional information.

“This expansion is great news for Domtar and Wayne County. It’s the largest local industry expansion in several years and will provide a financial boost for Wayne County’s economy. We’re always thrilled when jobs come to Wayne County, and we are excited that Domtar chose this facility for their expansion as they are an extremely valuable employer to our community,” said Executive Director of the Wayne County Industrial Development Authority Dell Keith. “We are also grateful to Georgia’s Department of Economic Development, Wayne County Commission, and City of Jesup for their contributions to make this project possible.”

“At Georgia Ports, we’re happy to support the export of Georgia-made products and the jobs those exports mean for communities across the state,” said Griff Lynch, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority. “The Domtar expansion will bring the number of Wayne County jobs that rely on port activity to nearly 2,200 full- and part-time positions.”

Project Manager Elizabeth McLean represented the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s (GDEcD) Global Commerce division on this competitive project in partnership with the Wayne County Industrial Development Authority, City of Jesup, Georgia Ports Authority, Georgia Quick Start, Georgia Power, and Atlanta Gas Light.

“Domtar has been a longtime partner to the state and specifically to our friends in southeast Georgia,” said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. “Many thanks to our partners at every level of government who continue to prioritize investing in the Port of Savannah and in our workforce training programs — both of which have been critical to international companies like Domtar continuing to create opportunities for Georgians.”
