CLEAN RECYCLING INITIATIVE™ Launches McGill University Marketing Idea Competition On The Subject Of The Environment

MONTREAL — January 10, 2022 — Montreal-based non-profit organization, CLEAN RECYCLING INITIATIVE™ announced today that it launches a marketing idea competition in collaboration with McGill University. The competition is to facilitate fresh and innovative ideas of promoting the most sustainable technology platform in the global textile industry, named as Clean Recycling Initiative.

The students of McGill will be challenged to come up with effective ways of delivering messages according to the following segments and target audience:

  • Segment 1: Educate the public with the issues created by textile wastes, in particular, where the wastes end up even when they are put in local blue bins, salvation army, etc., with the assumption they are recycled / reused. Target audience: Everyone around the globe, i.e., consumers of textile goods and creators of textile wastes
  • Segment 2: Promote the technologies of Clean Recycling Initiative within the global textile industry for cleanly recycling process-wastes from textile factories. Target audience: Brands, Manufacturers, Retailers, Distributors and Transporters of any textile goods

“We are excited to announce the competition with the internationally renowned McGill University! All McGill students interested in the environment and participating in the competition will learn about significant issues and challenges arising from textile wastes through the educational contents provided by Clean Recycling Initiative. Culp LiveSmart® Performance Fabric Now Covers Seating in UNC’s Dean Dome

HIGH POINT, N.C. — January 11, 2022 — As a way to honor the late Rob Culp, co-founder of Culp Inc. and his beloved alma mater, UNC Chapel Hill, the seats in the Smith Center are newly covered with fabric created by the company he started 50 years ago. When Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham mentioned that it bothered him to see how dirty the seats were, Iv Culp, president and CEO of Culp, thought to himself, “Wait a minute. This is definitely something we can fix.”

The decision was made to use CULP’s LiveSmart performance fabric, which is moisture repellent, stain resistant, fade resistant, and heavy duty — a perfect combination for the Smith Center’s nearly 10,000 lower-level and mezzanine seats. “When they brought in the fabric to show us and demonstrate its capabilities, they literally poured Coke on the fabric, and wiped it right off with a dry rag,” recalled Smith Center Director Brett Botta. “Then they did the same thing with ketchup and two or three more ‘pain points’ for us, and they all wiped right off, which was pretty cool.”

“In our business, we’ve been focused on performance products for the last five years,” Iv Culp said. “Everything in upholstery, whether its home or hospitality, is looking for cleanable products. I knew that our advanced line of LiveSmart fabrics would be perfect for the job.”

The fabric was a great fit, but the key for both the Athletics Department and CULP was matching the exact pantone shade of Carolina Blue — which, like it or not, is not a very common fabric color in the upholstery world and would require some trial and error to match exactly. Enter Tammy Buckner, CULP’s senior vice president of design and marketing, who was responsible for the color matching.

“We took multiple fabric samples to the Dean Dome to make sure that when the lights were turned on, it didn’t cast any other color on television or in the arena itself,” Buckner said. “It was a long process, but we were determined to get it right.”

Beginning in March 2021, the cushions in the lower bowl and the mezzanine were removed in 2,000-2,500 seat blocks and shipped away to be re-covered. All of the cushions were back in place by October.

Iv notes that CULP is a publicly traded company that still feels like a family business, which makes it even more special to carry on the legacy started by his father and grandfather. CULP’s gift was two-fold — as Culp Inc. donated the fabric for the project, while the Culp family paid for the labor needed to install the new seat cushions.

“It’s a perfect marriage of what our company’s values are,” Iv said. “We’re a public business with a family culture. To my dad, family and business were the same, and it’s truly special to be able to honor him in this way.”

Bast Fibre Technologies To acquire North Carolina-based Lumberton Cellulose From Georgia-Pacific

VICTORIA, British Columbia — January 11, 2022 — Bast Fibre Technologies Inc. (BFT), a manufacturer of premium natural fibers for the global nonwoven and textile industries, announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Lumberton Cellulose LLC (LC), a natural fiber processing facility located in Lumberton, N.C., from Georgia-Pacific Cellulose LLC.

“Acquiring this state-of-the-art natural fibre processing facility and integrating the great team at Lumberton enables BFT to immediately establish North American manufacturing operations to meet the rapidly growing demand for our sustainable natural fibers”, said BFT CEO and Chairman Noel Hall.

“Following our recent acquisition of German-based fibre processor FVT, this is another key step in our long-term strategy of building significant high quality manufacturing capacity for our global customers supporting our core mission of ‘grow local, process local, sell local’.”

The purchase of LC builds on BFT’s existing relationship with Georgia-Pacific. In February of 2020, BFT licensed a suite of patents relating to the use of bast fibers in a variety of nonwoven products and processes from Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products on a global, exclusive basis. The LC facility is a highly automated, quality producer of natural fibers for the personal care and hygiene markets. Ideally located to serve BFT’s North American customers, BFT plans to grow and invest in the operation, establishing LC as its flagship U.S. manufacturing site and opening new opportunities and markets for North American hemp and flax growers.

Four Chemical Plants To Be Liquidated, Assets From Emerald Performance Materials

ST. LOUIS — January 10, 2022 — Industrial Asset Recovery Group (IARG) announces the liquidation of four chemical plants formerly operated by Emerald Performance Materials in Henry, Ill. Buyers have the opportunity to acquire complete processing units and chemical operations previously used in the manufacture of antioxidants, accelerators, and specialty chemicals used in tire production and other applications in the rubbers and elastomers industry. The plant officially ceased operations in 2021.

“This is a rare opportunity to acquire intact and complete processing units for chemical manufacturing,” said Stuart Millner, president at IARG. “These chemical plants are filled with high-quality specialty equipment which can be inserted lockstep with existing operations.”

The liquidation will take place via negotiated sale and interested parties can schedule plant tours beginning January 2022.

Available inventory includes specialty equipment used in accelerator processing, antioxidant processing, additives manufacturing, NaMBT & Nash manufacturing, and a large tank farm used throughout operations at the facility.

Plant #1: Accelerator Processing Plant

This 18,000-square-foot chemical plant operated was used to manufacture Cure-Rite® 18, an efficient thiocarbamyl sulfonamide rubber accelerator used in applications such as road tires, molded goods, hoses, and conveyor belts.

Plant #2: Antioxidant Processing Plant

This 10,000-square-foot chemical plant was used to manufacture Good-Rite® 3114, a high-purity antioxidant used in agriculture films and membranes, roto-molded goods, demanding wire and cable applications, polyolefin manufacturing, and other rubber products.

Plant #3: Additives Manufacturing Plant

This 38,000-square-foot chemical plant was used to manufacture multiple chemical products, such as StaLite®, VanLube®, 9317, and 50 percent NaMBT. StaLite is an additive to general purpose antioxidants for elastomers. VanLube is a lubricator used as an oxidation inhibitor and metal deactivator. 9317 is an amine antioxidant designed to enable high temperature performance in synthetic lubricants. Fifty percent NaMBT is a solution of sodium salt used in the manufacturing of tires and similar mechanical rubber goods products.

Plant #4: NaMBT & NaSH Manufacturing Plant

This 4,000-square-foot chemical plant was used to manufacture Good-Rite® NaMBT & NaSH. These chemical products are aqueous solutions used as corrosion inhibitors, chemical intermediates, binding, processing, and dyes. Primary applications include wood pulping, mining/ore processing, chemical dyes, antifreeze, coolants, refrigeration, and similar uses.

Large Tank Farm

Dozens of large storage tanks, from 15,000 to 30,000 gallons, used to capture and offload various chemical components throughout the plant processing areas at Emerald Process Materials.

Certified riggers will be available for the removal of equipment and machinery post sale.

Beaver Paper Group Modernizes Production Floor With New Cutting-Edge Machinery

ATLANTA, Ga. — January 10, 2022 — Beaver Paper Group, a manufacturer of sublimation media and cut-and-sew paper. is pleased to announce the two new of state-of-the-art roll converting machines to its recently modernized production facility. The additions include The Lemu Master Roll 3500 and The Lemu BRA-3.

The Lemu Master Roll 3500, renamed RM1 by the Beaver Paper team, has semi-automatic capabilities allowing wider roll converting. This machine has been designed and manufactured to handle paper rolls up to a diameter of 685 millimeters (mm), a width of 3300 (mm), and thickness up to 140 grams-per-square-meter. The wide load capabilities of the RM1 will contribute greatly to Beaver Paper Group’s future growth, expanding into larger high-speed markets.

RM2

The Lemu BRA-3, renamed RM2 by the Beaver Paper team, is a fully automatic, high-speed, three-shaft rewinder that allows for fold-less tucking for sublimation paper. The RM2 mass produces up to 650 meters per minute. This dynamic machine has been manufactured to handle paper rolls up to a diameter of 300 mm, a width of 2000 mm, and a basis weight of 300 grams per square meter.

Additional Equipment Added in 2021

In June, Beaver Paper Group installed The Dalmec Robotic Arm Manipulator and “The Perf 104” in mid-year of 2021. The Dalmec Manipulator is the largest robotic arm in the U.S. and works in conjunction with the RM1 by lifting and transporting the large-scale paper rolls with a maximum handling weight of 1060 kg and extracts them from the RM2 converting machine.

In addition, The Perf 104, Precision Perforator is one of the widest perforating machines in the world, measured at 104-inches, and has impeccable precision while producing micro-perf and one-perf kraft papers. These two new machines work exceptionally well with the recently acquired modern lineup of roll converting machines.

OEKO-TEX® New Regulations 2022

ZURICH — January 10, 2022 — At the 2021 World Climate Conference in Glasgow, representatives of the textile industry presented a more ambitious version of the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action. In the updated charter, more than 130 participating companies pledged their commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius — a goal of the Paris Climate Agreement. In turn, the textile industry has set the target of reducing carbon emissions by minimum 30 percent by 2030. The carbon- and water-intensive manufacturing processes in the textile industry hold great potential for improvement but the large-scale challenge requires action beyond voluntary initiatives.

OEKO-TEX® supports action

To achieve the industry’s 2030 goal, companies need reliable data. To promote progress and data exchange along the global supply chain, OEKO-TEX® has launched the Impact Calculator. The tool measures the carbon and water footprint of each process step, the overall process and one kilogram of material/product.“Transparency is the decisive factor to measure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption in supply chains“ explains Secretary General Georg Dieners. “Providing tangible solutions for industry’s challenges is the guiding principle behind OEKO-TEX’s 30 years of commitment to companies and consumers. Lifecycle assessment solution

OEKO-TEX recognized the need for action and started development of a life cycle assessment tool in 2020. Now, both carbon and water footprint calculations are integrated into the STeP by OEKO-TEX facility certification. Thus, the certification enables individual facilities to:

  • Identify the largest carbon and water impacts by materials used or produced, as well as by production processes.
  • Take action to improve operations and meet reduction targets.-Share carbon and water footprint data with customers, investors, business partners and other stakeholders.

The STeP certification is a pre-requisite for earning the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX® product label. Implementation of footprint calculation data for consumer communication is planned for a future step toward transparency.

New certific ation for brands and retaile rs: RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS by OEKO-TEX®

In mid-2022, the association will introduce RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS by OEKO-TEX®, a new certification for brands and retailers committed to international agreements for human rights and environmental protection. OEKO-TEX aims to support companies in fulfilling due diligence obligations within their own operations and their global supply chains. RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS by OEKO-TEX was developed in accordance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the relevant OECD Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct.

MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX®

The traceable sustainability label for textiles and leather goods again recorded the strongest growth within the OEKO-TEX portfolio. Compared to the previous year, the number of MADE IN GREEN label holders increased by 55 percent (as of 31/12/2021). While home textiles continue to occupy the top spot as the strongest category (bedding with an increase of 80 percent compared to the previous year), there is currently movement particularly in the apparel category. With a year-on-year increase of 156 percent, workwear and protective clothing recorded the biggest growth. This makes it clear how quickly demand for sustainably manufactured products is developing in all textile product areas.

New and updated limited values

OEKO-TEX has added bisphenol B (BPB) in the STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD and ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX certifications and to the STeP by OEKO-TEX MRSL. The same applies to two additional colourants based on Michler’s ketone/base.

New substances under observation

In 2022, OEKO-TEX will continue to monitor various substances based on the latest scientific findings and conformity with relevant specifications. This primarily concerns some process preservative agents and the bisphenols F, S and AF.
