MagnaColours® Reaches For The Stars With The Launch Of Two Brand-New Special Effect Inks

BARNSLEY, England — February 7, 2022 — Manufacturer of water-based screen-printing inks MagnaColours® has launched two brand new additions to its special effects range of inks — MagnaPrint® Foil Adhesive and MagnaPrint Ultra Clear Glitter Base.

MagnaPrint Foil Adhesive is the latest water-based foil binder from Magna, offering a super-soft print handle when applying a variety of different foils to garments and fabrics. A key element of the new Foil Adhesive is its smaller, more refined particle size; this allows for stronger definition, crisper edges, and finer details to be achieved in the foil areas of prints. Alongside these features, Magna have ensured that the water-based ink offers excellent screen runability and open time to support printers during production. What’s more MagnaPrint Foil Adhesive is a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) approved input, and is certified to Oeko-Tex Eco Passport and ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) level 3.

Continuing the theme of special effects, Magna has also launched a brand-new glitter binder, MagnaPrint Ultra Clear Glitter Base. This product allows printers to load up to 20 percent glitter particles into the base ink and delivers improved clarity and shine over previous versions. The MagnaLab has also refined the product to ensure superior stretch and elasticity, and excellent wash fastness performance – meeting the requirements of major brands.

Helen Parry, managing director at MagnaColours described the new product launches:

“The screen-printing industry is always demanding new and improved printing inks and we’re proud that the MagnaLab continues to deliver cutting edge water-based technology to printers worldwide. With the launch of Foil Adhesive and Ultra Clear Glitter Base, Magna’s portfolio of special effects solutions is continuing to grow, and we’re excited to see how printers use both inks in action.”

To celebrate the launch of these products, Magna created a special space-themed print design and accompanying video to show off the effects and provide printers with possible inspiration for the product’s possible end uses.

Based in Barnsley, England, MagnaColours joined forces with Avient Corp. in July 2021 and continues to develop sustainable inks for the screen-printing industry that solve real problems for printers every day, whilst providing the highest quality finished garments for brands and retailers around the world.

HYPETEX®, adidas Selected As JEC Innovation Awards 2022 Finalists For Kromaskin™ Field Hockey Stick

LONDON — February 4, 2022 — Hypetex® is delighted to announce that its Hypetex® Kromaskin™ field hockey stick for adidas has been selected as a finalist for the 2022 JEC Innovation Awards.

Hypetex was commissioned by adidas to develop a market leading hockey stick differentiated from existing equipment not just by its unique pigmented carbon fiber finish, but also by its game changing hitting power and consistency. The patented range of Kromaskin sticks, created with support from project partners Textreme® and Marque Makers, was found to outperform competitors in a benchmark study against eight other premium hockey sticks carried out by Loughborough’s Sports Technology Institute (STI).

Hypetex lead the design, engineering, materials, and production process development for the adidas field hockey stick project. By incorporating the stick’s finish color within the outermost carbon fiber layer, the stick mold could be adjusted outwards, placing the highly structural spread tow materials right at the outer extremities of the mold cavity, increasing mechanical performance and maximizing the structural benefits of the composite materials used.

Whilst the Kromaskin surface provides a stunning depth of colour with minimal finishing required after demoulding, the Hypetex technology, including an epoxy based expanding microsphere system used in the core, delivers significant performance gains on the hockey pitch. In tests at the STI, adidas Kromaskin sticks had up to 16-percent higher coefficient of restitution (COR), meaning they will return more energy and the ball will travel faster. In addition, through the production led design and materials used, the variation in COR was 70-percent less than the other sticks on test, a significant reduction in the production inconsistencies common with the manufacturing of performance sporting goods.

The JEC Innovation Awards are recognized as the composite industry’s most prestigious awards. Over the last 16 years, the JEC Innovation Program has involved nearly 1,900 companies worldwide. The award winners will be announced on April 26 in Paris, and Hypetex and adidas are finalists in the Sports & Leisure category.

“We are thrilled to be nominated as finalists for the 2022 JEC Innovation Awards and are delighted that the awards committee recognized the significant performance gains realized with the new adidas sticks as well as the stunning visual finish created by our Kromaskin technology,” commented Marc Cohen, CEO, Hypetex.

Exhibiting as part of the Composites UK stand, Hypetex will display its full portfolio of uniquely coloured materials at JEC World including 3K woven styles, ultra-lightweight spread tow fabrics, UD materials, and new coloured flax products. The Hypetex Kromaskin hockey stick for adidas will also be on show in Paris as part of the JEC Innovation Planets platform.

KARL MAYER And Hua Yu Zheng Ying Group: Cooperation In China’s Warp Knitting Industry

OBERTSHAUSEN, Germany — February 3, 2022 — Several Corona waves, supply chain bottlenecks and unforeseen problems such as sudden power rationing in China have caused difficulties in the global textile market in recent years. The highly competitive shoe fabric fabric market has been particularly affected by the difficulties.

Here, only those are successful who react quickly and flexibly meet customer requirements, combine quality with efficiency, hold their own in globalized markets and drive innovation. The Hua Yu Zheng Ying Group (Hua Yu) shows how this can be done. The RD 7/2-6 EN double needle bar raschel machine from KARL MAYER demonstrates what is needed to achieve this.

Hua Yu is a leading warp knitting company based in Jinjiang City, and is one of the first users of the high-performance RD machine. The RD 7/2-6 was launched in 2019 specifically to be more competitive in the shoe fabric market. Just two years later, the newcomer has established itself as the machine of choice among manufacturers worldwide.

Strengthening competitiveness with quality and efficiency

Hua Yu was founded in 1989 and produces warp knitted and knitted fabrics in a vertically integrated process chain with man-made fiber, yarn and textile production as well as finishing and dyeing. More than 400 modern warp knitting machines, including 170 double needle bar raschel machines from Karl Mayer, are running in the warp knitting mill. The output is more than 20,000 t of functional textiles per year. This makes Hua Yu one of the leading companies in the warp knitting sector in China, and one of the largest producers of spacer fabrics in the country. The spacer textiles go mainly to the shoe market. This has been significantly overheated in recent years with full order books and short delivery times. Well thought-out strategies were needed for success. Hua Yu has made its entire manufacturing chain more competitive and strengthened its core competitive advantages in terms of cost and size to respond quickly to external changes. It has also strengthened its technical base. “Besides, the key to our success also lies in heavy investment in Karl Mayer’s advanced machines of high speed and high yield to ensure quality and efficiency,” explained Su Chengyu, general manager of Hua Yu Zheng Ying Group. The RD 7/2-6 EN in particular perfects the balance between these two production factors, Hua Yu is confident. The quality of RD 7 goods is a real competitive advantage. “Of course, fabric produced with Karl Mayer’s machines feels smoother and more homogeneous and has clearer patterns, which are generally acknowledged in the industry,” said Yang Xiaoqing, Manufacturing director of Warp Knitting Division of Hua Yu Zheng Ying Group.

Save manpower with more efficiency and flexibility

Hua Yu operates the RD 7/2-6 EN at up to 1,1000 rounds per minute and, thus, achieves significantly more output than before. The company’s capacities have increased by around 30 percent, according to Yang Xiaoqing. Hua Yu also benefits from the flexibility of the RD model. In the past, the production of warp knitted fabrics with different patterns required machines with different specifications and corresponding operating personnel. This cost material and human resources. Equipped with seven guide bars and EN pattern drives for their electronic control, patterns of the most varied design can be produced on just one machine, thus, meeting the requirements of different applications. In addition, the patterns can be easily changed. “With the RD7 from Karl Mayer, our production efficiency has been increased dramatically. Previously we had one operator on two machines, and now one operator can manage four to five machines. In addition, the company’s capacity has been increased by about 30 percent,” Yang Xiaoqing said.

In addition, the availability of the production equipment was significantly stabilized or improved. The machine failure rate fell from 6 to 3 percent, while operating efficiency increased from 80 to 90 percent.

With fast support to efficient operations

In addition to innovative machines, Karl Mayer offers to Hua Yu sophisticated after-sales solutions for an efficient internal operational procedure.

The innovative knitwear manufacturer is one of the first users of the RD 7/2-6 EN. If questions or problems arise, engineers are immediately on hand to monitor the required data and report back the monitoring results. If necessary, cooperation partners are also involved in problem finding on site. “Karl Mayer has service centers in China’s key warp knitting industrial clusters. It communicates with us in a timely manner, and responds quickly if there were any problems,” explained Yang Xiaoqing.

Hua Yu also cooperates with Karl Mayer’s Academy. The company’s in-house educational facility provides regular training on warp knitting technology and customized training at customers’ premises according to their specific technical requirements. Hua Yu wants to improve the technical skills of its staff and has already had them trained in a course. The first on-site training took place from 5 to 7 January and was very successful.

Co-innovation promotes the differentiation advantage

Technological innovation capability is Hua Yu’s core advantage in a competitive environment that is all about differentiation. The company attaches great importance to technological research and development capabilities. With an R&D team of around 200 employees and more than 36 patented technologies, the company has won a variety of international sports brands such as SKECHERS, ASICS, PUMA, ANTA and LI-NING as long-term partners.

Hua Yu’s definition of innovation is broad. It covers product innovations to meet the needs of the market as well as material innovation in line with the strategy of sustainable development. Innovations in the field of production equipment mainly concern the development and exploitation of machine functions and the exploration of completely new possibilities for fabric production together with the machine manufacturers. Among these, Karl Mayer is an important driving force.

Continue to grow with the right partner

With its well-thought-out strategy, Hua Yu is still on the road to success. In order to expand and develop again, the company had just increased its investment by RMB 3.5 billion in 2019 for a new warp knitted fabric production project. The project will see the construction of a new factory covering an area of 170,000 m². As a partner of Hua Yu, Karl Mayer will also help the company improve its competitiveness in all areas with the new factory and lead it to greater success.

U.S. Apparel And Footwear Industry Calls On Senate To Pass Shipping Reform Legislation

WASHINGTON — February 4, 2022 — The American Apparel & Footwear Association called on the U.S. Senate to pass the Ocean Shipping Reform Act (OSRA), either as a standalone measure or as part of ‘must-pass’ legislation, following its introduction last evening by Senators Klobuchar (D-MN) and Thune (R-SD).

The bill requires the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) to establish and enforce rules to respond to breaches of contracts and address excessive and unjust detention and demurrage fees. The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved its bi-partisan version of the bill in December 2021.

“The shipping crisis has seen excessive costs passed onto American companies by international carriers looking to take advantage of the situation,” said Steve Lamar, president and CEO of the American Apparel & Footwear Association. “The Ocean Shipping Reform Act meets a dire need for increased enforcement by the Federal Maritime Commission, and the apparel and footwear industry strongly encourages the Senate to pass this bill quickly so that President Biden can sign it into law and end these predatory practices.

“Inflationary price increases for apparel and footwear are truly unprecedented, after 20-plus years of deflation in the apparel and footwear market. This is a direct result of unnecessary tariffs and the worsening shipping crisis. These price tags reflect a mix of record-setting shipping rates, unprecedented shipping delays, tariffs on imports, and unfair and excessive shipping fees faced by companies who are working to keep Americans affordably dressed.

“Thank you to Senators Klobuchar (D-MN), Thune (R-SD), Baldwin (D-WI), Hoeven (R-ND), Stabenow (D-MI), Marshall (R-KS), Peters (D-MI), Moran (R-KS), Blumenthal (D-CT), Young (R-IN), Kelly (D-AZ), Blackburn (R-TN), Booker (D-NJ), and Ernst (R-IA) for their leadership on this matter.”

AAFA has been a regular advocate for increased enforcement by the FMC, particularly regarding unjust detention and demurrage fees. This includes many calls for action in letters to President Biden in response to the current shipping crisis.

On February 3, AAFA sent a letter to House Leaders urging them to vote “YES” on adding the House-passed H.R. 4996, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021 (OSRA 21), to the America COMPETES Act. Late on February 3, the House overwhelmingly approved, by a vote of 367-59, adding OSRA 21 to the America COMPETES Act, which the House is expected to pass on February 4.

NRF Statement On Senate Introduction Of Ocean Shipping Reform Act

WASHINGTON — February 3, 2022 — The National Retail Federation today issued the following statement from Senior Vice President of Government Relations David French after the Ocean Shipping Reform Act (OSRA) of 2021 was introduced in the Senate. The bipartisan legislation is sponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Thune (R-SD) and would modernize the international maritime transportation system.

“The sustained supply chain challenges, exacerbated by increased consumer demand during the coronavirus pandemic, have continued to impact the daily operations of retailers and the greater business community. For nearly two decades the Shipping Act has remained untouched, complicating supply chain disruption issues and adding to port congestion.

“Now more than ever, it is essential that we prioritize and invest in changes to support a modern-day transportation system. We appreciate the work of Senators Klobuchar and Thune to expedite this critical legislation and look forward to supporting its swift consideration in the Senate and conference with the House.”

The House version of the bill, sponsored by Representatives John Garamendi (D-CA) and Dusty Johnson (R-ND), was approved by an overwhelming majority in December. NRF issued a statement applauding the bill’s passage.

NCTO Welcomes House Passage Of America COMPETES Act; Helps Close De Minimis Loophole

WASHINGTON — February 4, 2022 — The National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO), representing the full spectrum of U.S. textiles from fiber through finished sewn products, issued a statement today welcoming House passage of the America COMPETES Act, a legislative package that will help close the de minimis loophole on duty-free imports from China and also renew the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB), both important provisions to U.S. textile manufacturers.

“We commend the House for passing this sweeping legislation, which contains several critical trade provisions beneficial to American manufacturers,” said NCTO President and CEO Kim Glas. “This legislation contains a provision that would effectively prohibit China from exploiting the Section 321 de minimis mechanism in U.S. trade law, a win for U.S. textile producers and workers.

“We sincerely thank Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) for working diligently to include and preserve his Import Security Fairness Act in the underlying U.S. competitiveness bill. This bill would help close the de minimis loophole, which allows imports valued under $800 to come into the United States without paying duties and taxes, bypassing inspections by U.S. Customs and providing a backdoor to Chinese goods produced with forced labor. The loophole has not only fueled the rise of imports from foreign e-commerce companies and mass distributors, but it has also put our domestic manufacturers and workers at a competitive disadvantage.”

Another important provision in the legislation renews the MTB for two years, which would extend limited tariff relief on a range of manufacturing inputs used by U.S. textile producers.

In closing, NCTO’s Glas stated: “NCTO worked closely with our allies in the House on these provisions in the underlying bill and we commend their hard work and support. We will continue to push for these critical provisions that benefit the U.S. textile industry in Senate-House conference negotiations in the coming days.”

Freudenberg Performance Materials — Three Functions In One Product: New Geogrid Composite Saves Up To 50% of installation time

ARNHEM, the Netherlands — January 25, 2022 — Freudenberg Performance Materials, a global supplier of high-performance geosynthetics for the civil engineering market, presents a new geogrid composite. Aimed at increasing the efficiency of construction projects, the product consists of a reinforcing grid bonded to a separation and filtration nonwoven geotextile. Customers can obtain the new geocomposite EnkaGrid MAX C as of now. It is part of the Enka Solutions range for civil engineering applications.

When weak subgrade soils are present, most infrastructure projects such as the construction of traffic areas require installation of two products: a geogrid to reinforce the granular layers of the subbase and a nonwoven geotextile for filtration and separation. “This means that the same work has to be done twice to purchase two products, get them to the site, manage stock and lay the geogrid and the nonwoven geotextile,” explained Tamás Szatmári, head of Application Management. “By providing the three required functions in one product, EnkaGrid MAX C substantially cuts complexity and costs for every stakeholder involved. Installation, for example, can be completed up to twice as fast.”

EnkaGrid MAX C is made up of a biaxial geogrid bonded at intervals to a needle-punched nonwoven geotextile. The bonding method chosen guarantees optimal interlocking of granular soils with the geogrid.

EnkaGrid MAX C can be ordered in tensile strengths ranging from 20 to 80 kN/m. It is supplied on rolls with a width of 5 meters. “The geogrid composite comes with extensive support offered by our team of experienced Application Managers. They assist engineers and clients from feasibility study to design and execution,” Szatmári concluded.
