INDA Releases 2022 Nonwovens Supply Report

CARY, N.C. — May 23, 2022 — INDA, the Association of the Nonwovens Fabrics Industry, announces publication of the ninth edition of the annual North American Nonwovens Supply Report for its members.

Based on extensive research, producer surveys and interviews with industry leaders, the report provides an overall view of North American supply, including the key metrics of capacity, production and operating rates, in addition to regional trade, through the year 2021. The 75-page report contains 36 figures and 11 tables.

“One of INDA’s key services is to provide valuable data and actionable industry information to enhance decision making in our capital-intensive industry. This report is the most complete and accurate portrayal for both rolled goods for sale and also material produced for internal consumption in North America. It also presents the industry operating rates in key areas. This is the essential metric on supply/demand balance essential for strategic planning and business investment decisions,” said Dave Rousse, INDA president.

The report — and the quarterly INDA Market Pulse and monthly Price Trends Summary — are provided to the nearly 400 INDA member companies and associates as part of their membership. The data gathered for this annual report serves as the foundation for the both the biannual Global Nonwoven Market Report published in September of 2021 and the biannual North American Nonwovens Industry Outlook, which will be updated and published this fall.

Findings from this year’s Supply Report include:

  • North American capacity continues to increase with investments being made across all the processes and for a variety of end-uses. Production output exceeded that of new capacity, resulting in the industry’s nameplate capacity utilization increasing year-over-year, for the fourth consecutive year.
  • In 2021, capacity of nonwovens in North America reached 5.540 million tonnes, an increase from the previous year of 1.8% (net growth of 98,300 tonnes) and an improvement over the previous year’s pandemic-impacted growth rate of 0.5%.
  • The industry was able to quickly react to the demand for electrostatically charged fine-fiber meltblown used in the manufacture of respirators and pleated face masks. Twenty-two meltblown lines were added in 2020, resulting in 7.2% year-over-year growth rate for meltblown. In 2021, another 12 lines were added, resulting in 8.5% annual growth over 2020.
  • North American imports, in tonnage, increased 1.6% in 2021 as exports decreased 6.0%. Imports were led by China accounting for 39% of the imports into North America followed by India (14%) and Germany (9%). Even with the significant shifts in North American trade dynamics, nonwovens tend to stay where they are produced, with the net trade balance (imports less exports, 422,100 tonnes) accounting for less than ten percent of the region’s capacity

The nonwovens industry has responded to the pandemic and will continue to provide materials that keep the surfaces we touch clean, protect the air we breathe, and provide a barrier to keep our bodies safe. The industry has responded by investing in new assets to ensure the steady flow of these needed materials. Across the two-year period, 2020 and 2021, the nonwovens industry has publicly announced capacity investments of $203 million. For this year and next for the industry has announced capacity investments of $686 million starting up in North America.”

Hyosung Presents Its Ocean Protection Initiative At The 2022 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market

SEOUL, South Korea — May 23, 2022 — According to the WWF, at least 10 percent of marine litter is estimated to be made up of fishing waste, which means that between 500,000 and 1 million tons of fishing gear are entering the ocean every year.

Hyosung is turning ocean trash into treasure with its Ocean Protection Initiative, which it will highlight at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market taking place June 9-11, 2022, in Denver, Colo. The initiative begins with the development of Hyosung’s MIPAN regen ocean nylon and regen ocean polyester, both made with ocean waste.

MIPAN regen ocean is GRS certified, 100-percent recycled nylon made from discarded fishing nets and other reclaimed nylon waste. Hyosung conducts an extensive collection, chemical recycling and creation process in order to produce exceptional-quality yarn that meets brands’ expectations.

Hyosung’s regen ocean 100-percent recycled polyester fiber is made from ocean plastic, which is Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) certified. This certification was created by Zero Plastic Oceans to transparently certify that plastic waste is correctly collected and managed. MIPAN regen ocean will receive OBP certification the first quarter of 2023.

  • creora regen: GRS certified, 100-percent recycled spandex;
  • creora bio-based: spandex made with 30-percent renewable resource;
  • MIPAN regen robic: 100-percent recycled high-tenacity nylon;
  • xanadu: a mechanical-stretch fiber made from a blend of PET and corn-based materials; and
  • regen xanadu: made with a blend of recycled post-consumer PET and corn-based materials.

Techtextil 2022 Exhibitor Preview: ANDRITZ

Andritz Textile Recycling Technologies Based On Tearing

With the acquisition of ANDRITZ Laroche SAS, ANDRITZ has expanded its product portfolio to include airlay and recycling technology as well as bast fiber processing technologies. Complete recycling lines for post-consumer and industrial textile waste to produce fibers for re-spinning and/or nonwoven end-uses are one focus of this product range. Customer awareness and regulations are forcing clothing brands to recycle their textile waste in their own products. Recycled fibers can also be used in the nonwovens industry for various applications, for example in the automotive industry, for insulation, mattresses, and furniture felts.

ANDRITZ Laroche offers a complete process range of tearing lines from 50 up to 3,000 kg/h, which can be used for almost all types of pre/post-consumer textile waste. The aim is to preserve the character of the original fibers, for example cotton, by maximizing fiber length, strength and feel.

The EXEL and JUMBO EXEL tearing machines from ANDRITZ are user-friendly and equipped with tailor-made automated solutions to remove the non-textile parts from post-consumer waste and unsold items. The EXEL tearing machine has a production capacity of 400 to 800 kg/h depending on the raw material for spinning quality.

The JUMBO EXEL tearing machine has a high production capacity of 600 to 1,200 kg/h depending on the raw material for spinning quality. This technology enables complex industrial waste to be processed into fibers such as trunk liners, door trims, floor and dash pads, and various needlepunched felts. Cutting-Edge Solutions For Durable Applications

The use of nonwovens in the automotive sector has increased dramatically in recent years. Based on decades of experience, ANDRITZ develops cost-efficient and reliable turnkey needlepunch and airlay lines.

The recent boom in the market for durable nonwoven products led ANDRITZ to develop its PA3000 elliptical pre-cylinder to meet the demand for higher capacities and lighter products. This state-of-the-art equipment consists of an optimized pre-needleloom cylinder for the production of light webs and provides greater speed and width. The lack of friction between the web and the rolls provides a perfect appearance. This process includes blending, metering, opening, the airlay process and finally, mat consolidation, by needling, thermobonding, a combination of both, or by spunlacing. ANDRITZ offers three different types of airlay: Airlay Flexiloft, Airlay Flexiloft+, and Airlay Resinfelt.

ANDRITZ Airlay Flexiloft and Airlay Flexiloft+ have been designed to form mats from all types of fibers, from short, recycled fibers to long and coarse natural fibers, and from blends with non-fibrous components, such as plastic, foam, wood chips, and many more. Used fibers and blends within different weight ranges can be processed on these lines, depending on the line configuration. Line widths range from 1.5 m up to 4 m. Airlay Resinfelt has been designed for thermoforming processes in the automotive and appliance industries. Manufacturers can offer weight ranges from 500 to 2,500 gsm over 2.4 m working width. Pantone Partners With Web3-Centered Technology Company Spatial Labs (sLABS) To Standardize Colors In The Metaverse

CARLSTADT, N.J. — May 20, 2022 — Pantone, the global color authority and provider of professional color language standards and digital solutions for the design community, today announced a strategic partnership with Spatial Labs (sLABS) for their first-ever wearable hardware product, LNQ.

The blockchain-enabled technology, coined by sLABS as “the wearable internet,” was founded by digital architect and visionary Iddris Sandu and is backed by investment firm Marcy Venture Partners (MVP), co-founded by Shawn Carter (JAY-Z), Jay Brown, and Larry Marcus.

Acting as an entry point into the metaverse, LNQ will further enhance users’ experiences in Web3 and foster connectivity through the intersection of technology, sustainability, culture, and fashion. sLABS will unveil the product via live stream and in-person at the official launch event hosted at NeueHouse in Los Angeles this weekend alongside its official partners, including color authority Pantone, music streaming service Tidal, sustainable footwear company ALES GREY, web3 platform Polygon, and several other brands committed to exploring the metaverse and web3 ecosystem.

Mimaki Announces The Release Of Pure Clear Ink “MH-110PCL” For 3D Printing

SUWANEE, Ga. — May 20, 2022 — Mimaki USA, a manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and cutters, announces the release of the Pure Clear ink MH-110PCL. Intended for use with the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 full color 3D printer. The new Pure Clear ink MH-110PCL will be available beginning May 2022.

Responding to customer demand, the newly developed pure clear ink MH-110PCL negates the yellowish tint evident in the previous MH-100CL clear ink, enabling more transparent modeling. The ink delivers truly clear output as intended by designers and architects, which is expected to be used in product design for home appliances and cosmetics and design mock-ups and verification for industrial products. It is also suitable for medical and architectural models requiring visualization to confirm internal structures.

As with the conventional MH-100CL clear ink, the pure clear MH-110PCL ink is not only limited to just clear output. It can also be combined with color inks (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) to reproduce translucent color effects. Accordingly, the Mimaki 3D printer 3DUJ-553, featuring the “full-color modeling capability with more than 10 million colors,” allows for use in designs emphasizing a broader range of colors and visuals than ever before with the addition of the clear and translucent color expressions enabled by the transparent pure clear ink MH-110PCL.

MH-110PCL will be available in 4.8 L capacity ink bottles.

The noticeable yellowish tint of the conventional clear ink “MH-100CL” has been negated, allowing for the creation of more transparent modeled objects. Transparency is not lost even when the thickness of the modeling object is increased. Furthermore, designs with colored representation within transparent modeled objects are now represented with crisp expressions with MH-110PCL.

Applications And Fields Of Use

Possible applications for the combination of Mimaki UV-curable full-color 3D inkjet printer 3DUJ-553 and Pure Clear ink MH-110PCL include product design prototyping, medical and architectural fields, and 3DCG design modeling.

Product Design

MH-110PCL is ideal for expressing transparent parts required in product design and other fields. In addition to transparent expression using clear ink individually, translucent color (transparent with added color) output combining clear ink and color ink expands the range of design expression.

Medical Modeling

Full-color 3D printing is suitable for the creation of color-coded organ models. Translucent color (transparent with added color) expressions can also visualize the interior of organs, which is useful in practical medical models.

Architectural Modeling

Partial transparency, such as the representation of glass windows and transparent exteriors, is a convenient means of showing the internal structure of models. This effect is difficult to achieve with handcrafted models or plaster-based 3D printer outputs. Partial transparency can be applied to architectural models, combining the exterior and interior structures.

3DCG Design

In 3DCG design, transparent components are helpful in expressing objects aloft. Applications such as elaborate 3D designs encased in clear protective components are also feasible with MH-110PCL.

KM.ON Acquires Cloud Technology From The Company Digitale Strickmanufaktur As Part Of An Asset Deal

International Apparel Federation (IAF) And International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) Develop The Standards Convergence Initiative (SCI)

ZEIST, The Netherlands & ZÜRICH, Switzerland — May 20, 2022 — The Standard Convergence Initiative (SCI) is an initiative of the International Apparel Federation (IAF) and the International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF) with the aim of having third party and brand/ retailer proprietary standards align across four key areas to help combat growing audit fatigue in the textile and footwear sector.

Preventable and tragic incidences and reported prevalence of forced/child labor have highlighted the urgent need to improve working conditions in the global textile and footwear sector. In an effort to mitigate the situation, third party and brand/retailer proprietary standards have proliferated and subsequently, manufacturers and suppliers find themselves facing multiple audits for standards that differ only slightly.

The drain on resources caused by numerous compliance mechanisms can take away from the resources necessary to act on improving working conditions. Multi-stakeholder initiatives such as the Social & Labor Convergence Program (SLCP) are already tackling the issue of audit fatigue. To complement these efforts and to further alleviate the unnecessary burden, standard bodies should consider aligning their standards where feasible to do so, and brands/ retailers should consider dropping their proprietary standards in favour of more streamlined third-party standards.

With the help of the Standards Map of the International Trade Center (ITC) the SCI has just released preliminary results of assessing to what degree standards are prepared to converge across four key areas. The preliminary results assess six prominent standards operating in the textile and footwear sector, specifically: amfori BSCI, Fair Labor Association (FLA), Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Made in Green by Oeko-Tex, SA8000 and WRAP. Standards that initially show a high preparedness for convergence and, subsequently, work toward increased convergence, will be promoted on the SCI website. It is hoped that once standard bodies understand where they are on the spectrum of convergence, they will be encouraged to work toward a common goal of increased alignment across certain standard requirements, quality assurance processes and oversight methodologies.

Cone Denim Launches Newest Community Collection Denim Supporting Mental Health Awareness Month

GREENSBORO, N.C. — May 19, 2022 — Cone Denim® is excited to launch its Mental Health Awareness Selvage Denim in support of Mental Health Awareness Month. This is the newest fabric within the Cone® Community Collection, a series of fabrics designed to support various causes and organizations that align with the values of Cone Denim. Cone will donate a portion of sales related to the newest selvage to the Child Mind Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and their families struggling with mental health and learning disorders.
