Almost Half Million Dutch Soldiers To Wear Camouflage Fabric Developed In The UK

ADLINGTON, United Kingdom — September 20, 2022 — Pincroft, the largest textile dyer, printer and finisher in the United Kingdom, developed a new camouflage pattern for the Dutch Ministry of Defence as part of their Defensie Materieel Organisatie’s (DMO) ‘STRONG’ programme that aims to supply combat clothing and equipment to all military personnel part of the Royal Netherlands Navy, Army, Air Force and Marechaussee.

Pincroft followed the guidelines of the new Netherlands Fractal Pattern (NFP) to create an eight-colour camouflage design that provides high levels of disruption to give soldiers better concealment when needed.

As part of the Pincroft’s team developing the camouflage pattern, Chris Durkin, explains: “The more colours are added to the design, the more disruption is created offering a greater degree of concealment. Our experience in Infrared Reflective Technology (IRR) and military printing has allowed us the opportunity to produce a product that we are very proud of”.

The fabric itself was created by global workwear textile manufacturer, Carrington Textiles, specifically following the Dutch MoD’s requirements on comfort and protection. The result is a lightweight yet durable textile of 210gsm with a composition of 50% cotton, 50% high tenacity nylon and Ripstop for added strength.

The high cotton content of the fabric creates a uniform that’s comfortable to wear due to its softness to the touch, and breathability, as well as providing moisture wicking properties, key elements for the tough conditions soldiers work in. The addition of high tenacity nylon to the fabric, provides added strength and durability, with the Ripstop properties of the fabric offering tear resistance.

The Dutch MoD’s DMO reported: “The 43 Gemechaniseerde Brigade of the Koninklijke Landmacht in Havelte was the first to receive the new interim combat clothing. The soldiers received the basic coats and trousers in the new camouflage pattern. This is the start of the large-scale issue to the entire armed forces! So far we are very proud with the results.”

Around 480,000 trousers and jackets will be delivered to officers from the Royal Netherlands Navy, Army, Air Force and Marechaussee, during a uniform roll out part of the Dutch MoD’s ‘STRONG’ programme that aims to equip the armed forces in the next 18 months with versatile uniforms and equipment that are adjustable according to the assignment. The pack also includes a raincoat, combat shirt and baseball cap.

The new NFP camouflage pattern is being manufactured in a green or woodland style for the Army, Air Force, Marechaussee and Marines, while the Navy receives a blue or marine style design.

Carrington Textiles Sales Director, Paul Farrel, added: “We were honoured to receive from the Dutch MoD a regimental plaque to commemorate the launch of their new uniform and recognise the work we’ve done in developing this new fabric and print.

This milestone marked the beginning of the issuance of a new uniform to the Dutch armed forces. Congratulations to the DMO’s KPU company for all their hard work and immense achievements, and to everyone at Pincroft and Carrington Textiles for playing a key role in the delivery of this transformational uniform!”.

GANT Commissions Artist Nadia Lee Cohen For Its GANT X Wrangler Collaboration Campaign

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — September 20, 2022 — American sportswear brand GANT is proud to have commissioned the multi-talented British artist Nadia Lee Cohen, to direct, photograph and star in its campaign for its collaboration with Wrangler®, one of America’s most recognized denim labels, the GANT x Wrangler Collection.

Heavily inspired by Americana and Britain, Nadia Lee Cohen is internationally recognized for her saturated, surreal dreamscape imagery that explores the paradoxical standoff between strength and fragility. In the GANT x Wrangler campaign, Lee Cohen plays with the camp side of the collection, portraying herself as a whip and lasso rearing rodeo star in a series of still and video self-portraits, alongside model Momo Ndiaye.

“Having Nadia Lee Cohen shoot and art direct the GANT x Wrangler campaign in a series of self-portraits really brought it all home. I think her way of capturing the essence of American culture; in all its glory and gloom alike, is unrivaled. She’s one of the most exciting artists of our time and we’re honored to have her on board for this project. On top of that, she’s also a sweetheart and an absolute delight to work with,” says GANT Creative Director, Christopher Bastin.

“I’m so happy to be a part of this special merging between GANT and Wrangler. The collection has just enough equal parts from both brands to create a perfectly glamorous take on traditional Western wear. My dad learned English from watching old Westerns and they’d always be on the TV as a child. Being subjected to those desolate technicolor backdrops and leathery sun-soaked skin was probably the catalyst behind my love of cinema and Western culture. I wanted to approach the films and still images like traditional Hollywood screen tests and really project a sense of artifice within the setting and poses,” explains Nadia Lee Cohen.

The collaboration features a 30-piece capsule collection featuring jeans, apparel and accessories for men and women, which explores the intersection of East Coast preppy and Western denim. Standout pieces include bootcut jeans with collegiate patches, a varsity jacket with a western embroidered motif and a faux-fur lined denim jacket.

“The western lifestyle is what inspired the Wrangler brand, there has always been a fashion side to it,” says Holly Wheeler, vice president of global brand marketing at Wrangler. “Leaning into the fashion-forward side of the brand by connecting with GANT helps bring a charming side to our authentic western roots. We’re excited to add prep into our cowboy culture.”

The limited collection will be sold in GANT and Wrangler channels worldwide starting September 15, 2022.

TENCEL™ Modal Fiber With Indigo Color Technology Won 2022 ITMF Award For Sustainability And Innovation

LENZING, Austria — September 20, 2022 — Lenzing, supplier of sustainably produced specialty fibers, has been recognized in The International Textile Manufacturers Federation (ITMF)’s ITMF Awards 2022 for its unwavering commitment towards paving sustainable practices for the denim industry. Paving a clear path towards a more sustainable denim industry, TENCEL™ Modal fiber with Indigo Color technology was presented with the award for Sustainability and Innovation at the ITMF Annual Conference today in Davos, Switzerland.

First launched in 2021, TENCEL™ Modal fiber with Indigo Color technology has been established as the foremost fiber solution to address the demand for more eco-responsible fiber alternatives among denim brands and retailers. The new technology incorporates indigo pigment directly into TENCEL™ branded modal fibers using a one-step, spun-dyeing process. Such process delivers superior color fastness relative to conventional indigo dyeing. Compared with traditional rope-dyed indigo yarns, the production of TENCEL™ Modal fiber with Indigo Color technology saves around 99% of water and electricity, 80% of chemicals and even 100% of heat energy, significantly reducing the ecological footprint of denim products.

“At Lenzing, sustainability and innovation are key drivers of our business, and it is truly an honor to be recognized by industry players and the ITMF Awards. Through a blend of eco-responsible materials and pioneering technology, we created a new benchmark for the denim industry with TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology. We will continue to innovate our fiber offerings to address the rising demand for eco-responsible alternatives. With each fiber innovation, we are one step closer to reducing environmental impact of our textile industry ecosystem,” said Florian Heubrandner, Vice President Global Textiles Business at Lenzing AG.

TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo Color technology fibers offer virtually endless possibilities, from denim to outerwear, active attire and footwear. Without the worry about harmful chemicals, the new fibers can even open up applications for indigo in baby items, such as clothing and sheets.

“While we continue to explore different washes, effects and fiber blends, we are open for innovation and what can be done. Beyond the denim market there are already commercial programs in knitwear. With so many great minds and new ideas out in the market, this is an excellent opportunity to experiment with something new and lower the environmental footprint,” said Tricia Carey, Director of Global Business Development Denim and Americas, Lenzing AG.

To date, TENCEL™ Modal with Indigo technology has been designated BioPreferred® by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was certified with the EU Ecolabel.

Berry Global Builds Recycling Ecosystem To Provide Nonwovens Customers With Recycled Content

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — September 21, 2022 — Berry Global Group, Inc. announces the formation of a closed-loop recycling ecosystem to supply post-industrial recycled materials into the manufacturing of its Endura™ spunbond and meltblown nonwovens product line. Berry Global leverages its sustainability leadership, providing nonwovens customers with outlet for pre-consumer recycled plastic waste. Products under the Endura product line are recognized under the SCS Recycled Content Certification, which measures the percentage of recycled content for the purpose of making an accurate claim in the marketplace, allowing customers the ability to include the SCS logo on-pack.

In an effort to reduce waste, Berry began the manufacturing of Endura products through recycling the Company’s post-industrial waste from its operations. The Company has added to its Endura product line through the additions of Endura Scrubby and Endura Meltblown.

Endura nonwovens provide 90% recycled content

Berry introduced the closed-loop recycling ecosystem earlier this year with manufacturing spanning six of its existing European locations. Through the ecosystem, Berry supplies customers with nonwoven materials, receives post-industrial waste from the conversion processes of its customers, and lastly incorporates the recycled content into Berry’s Endura nonwovens line. Within the Endura line, Berry offers spunbond products containing up to 90% recycled content for use in applications such as disinfectant wipes, home and bedding, roofing, and carpet tiles.

“Customers look to Berry for help in reaching their sustainability goals. Through our size and scale, we have the unique ability to invest and commercialize innovative, sustainable solutions to increase recycled content, reduce emissions, and promote circularity,” said Achim Schalk, EVP/GM Health, Hygiene, and Specialties EMEIA for Berry Global.

Closed-loop recycling reduces CO2eq emissions

Through the introduction of the Endura collection and recycling scheme for spunbound materials, Berry aims to increase the availability of post-industrial recycled materials, reducing dependence on virgin polymers. Increasing the circularity of its nonwovens products, Berry further increases its access to valuable recycled plastic. The use of post-industrial materials results in a 70% reduction of CO2eq emissions1 during the manufacturing process, per kilogram versus virgin materials. This reduction in CO2eq emissions directly impacts Berry’s Science Based Target to reduce absolute scope 1+2 emissions 25% from 2019.

Within the Endura ecosystem, Berry collaborates with customers to collect and repelletize nonwovens waste from customer operations. In turn, the material collected reenters the product stream in the form of new nonwovens materials for customers.

1This calculation has not been externally reviewed for compliance with ISO 14040/44 Standard and Guideline. Material GHG savings are estimated based solely on resin production according to “Cradle to Gate LCI of nine plastic resins and four PU precursors” Franklin and Associates.

Macy’s, Inc. Announces Sustainable Initiatives To Drive A More Circular Future

NEW YORK — September 19, 2022 — Through its social purpose platform, Mission Every One, Macy’s, Inc. is committed to creating a brighter future for all and creating a more equitable and sustainable future. Today, Macy’s, Inc. is providing an update detailing its achievements towards its long-term Sustainability goals – including initiatives that promote circularity throughout its value chain.

“As a leading, omnichannel retailer, we understand the role we play in creating a more equitable and sustainable future for all. We are committed to promoting a more circular economy across our value chain,” said Keelin Evans, vice president of sustainability at Macy’s, Inc. “Our efforts are focused on providing sustainable and ethically produced brands, products, and services to our customers, while reducing our impact on the environment through operations. We’re going to achieve this through our guiding social purpose platform, Mission Every One, and an enterprise-wide collaboration with partners, designers, suppliers, logistics partners, entrepreneurs, colleagues and customers.”

Macy’s aims to advance its sustainable product by offering to include circular solutions and services, prioritizing opportunities that extend the life of a product. To drive this goal and begin the transition to a more circular business, earlier this year, Macy’s became a part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation community, focused on accelerating and enabling the transition to a global, circular economy and FABSCRAP, a non-profit in New York City that helps ensure that the fabric waste – an unavoidable part of the design and development process – is reused, upcycled, downcycled and recycled responsibly.

Over the past year and a half, the company has also introduced several initiatives to reduce, reuse and recycle across its private and market brand product offerings and operations.

To reduce waste, Macy’s Private Brand team has embraced technology that allows the scaling back of the number of physical samples required from suppliers without impacting fit, color and other design considerations. This process has significantly decreased textile waste. In 2019, 5% of samples were digital and by the end of the 2022 development season, 61% of all samples were made virtually. This shift actively keeps product that would otherwise not have use, out of landfills.

Macy’s has also adopted best practices to reduce packaging, including standardizing the size of packing cartons and minimizing packaging materials:

  • Auto-boxer and auto-bagger technology enables Macy’s to create unique packaging fitting odd or oversized items and reducing box volume and waste up to 50%.
  • In 2022, virgin plastic mailer bags were edited to include 35% recycled content, reducing the thickness of the bag by 20%. As a result, virgin plastic input was reduced by more than 50%.
  • All cardboard used by Macy’s fulfillment centers is FSC certified and is comprised of 35% recycled content.
  • In Spring of 2022, most packages digital Macy’s orders fulfilled by our fulfillment centers do not include printed invoices to reduce unnecessary waste as customers are able to reference order information in their online accounts and email receipts.

To reuse and extend the life of all products, the Macy’s reverse logistics team is dedicated to moving goods from customers back to the sellers, or manufacturers, or sold to resellers to continue the lifecycle of the product. Through its partnership with Give Back Box, Macy’s customers can contribute to the responsible lifecycle of their clothes, toys and other pre-loved items by downloading a pre-paid shipping label from Macy’s website and sending them to be donated for resale and recycling.

Additionally, both Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s offer accessible care instructions and programs to help customers extend the product life and reduce water and electricity use. For products like Jewelry, Watches and Furniture, repair services are available through WorryNoMore Protection Plans and a partnership with My Jewelry Repair.

As part of its 2025 goal to recycle as much material as possible, the Macy’s beauty products team launched a pilot program to minimize environmental impact by shipping outdated collateral to a third-party to be recycled rather than disposing of it in-store. Macy’s also launched a program to use RFID technology to track participation and weights of store cardboard recycling as part of our goal to increase store recycling rates to 80% by 2025.

These initiatives are some of the latest examples of Macy’s, Inc.’s sustainable initiatives and practices undertaken to create a meaningful impact for people, the planet and the communities we serve. Freudenberg Hosts German National Hydrogen Council Meeting

WEINHEIM, Germany — September 19, 2022 — Freudenberg Performance Materials – the Freudenberg Group’s nonwovens specialist – is hosting a meeting of the German National Hydrogen Council at the Freudenberg headquarters in Weinheim, Germany, on September 16. As a leading global supplier of technical textiles, Freudenberg Performance Materials provides fuel cell components for mobility applications and for electrolyzers used to produce CO2-free hydrogen.

The German National Hydrogen Council was appointed by the German government and acts as an independent, non-partisan advisory board. The council board currently consists of 25 high-ranking experts in the fields of economy, science and civil society. The objective is to assist and advise the State Secretaries’ Committee on Hydrogen in the further development and implementation of Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy. Council meetings are hosted by one of the board members to enable the council to deepen its knowledge of the relevant technologies, value chain roles and challenges. Dr. Silke Wagener is a member of the council board, and represents the Freudenberg technology group, giving input on suppliers’ know-how as well as contributing her decades-long expertise in technological solutions for the hydrogen industry.

Gas diffusion layers: Insights into production and requirements

During a tour of the factory organized for the council board members, Freudenberg Performance Materials explained the development and production of performance-critical gas diffusion layers manufactured from carbon fiber-based nonwovens for fuel cells and porous transport layers for electrolyzers. The tour highlighted the potential for improvements from a supplier’s perspective, such as the need for very timely exchange and collaboration along the value chain. Functioning, unbroken and scalable value chains, in parallel with the development and scaling of hydrogen infrastructure, are key prerequisites for the hydrogen industry to fulfill its vital role in the transformation to climate neutrality. An exhibition jointly organized by Freudenberg Performance Materials and its sister companies illustrated the contribution that the Freudenberg Group as a whole and its various high-tech components can make to the hydrogen industry and thus to the energy transition.

About gas diffusion layers and porous transport layers

Gas diffusion layers are one of the main components at the heart of the fuel cell. Their function is to transport gases and liquids in the cells. They have a significant impact on system performance and costs, and are indispensable for the functioning of fuel cells. The same applies for porous transport layers that are the key component of electrolyzers for the CO2-free production of what is called green hydrogen.

Fuel cells in combination with green hydrogen are an important technology for CO2-free mobility, in particular with reference to buses, heavy-duty trucks and trains. Other uses include stationary applications such as stationary power generation or heat generation in buildings or industry.

Apart from mobility, green hydrogen also plays a key role in climate-neutral energy supplies in the industrial sector, particularly in the chemical and steel industries.
