Inditex And Jeanologia Develop Air Fiber Washer, The First Industrial Air System Designed To Reduce Microfiber Shedding In Textiles

MILAN — June 8, 2023 — Inditex and Jeanologia have jointly developed Air Fiber Washer, the first industrial air system designed to extract microfibers during garment fabrication and thus reduce subsequent shedding in domestic laundering.

Microfibers are small particles with a length of less than 15 millimeters that are shed from textiles, especially during initial domestic washes. This is one of the great challenges for the textile industry due to existing limitations in current industrial capacities for water treatment.

Air Fiber Washer – which will be presented 8-14 June at the ITMA international textile technology fair in Milan – was created with the aim of reducing the release of microfibers in initial washes thanks to a new industrial pretreatment that effectively removes these particles.

With innovative technology, this new development makes it possible to reduce microfiber shedding by up to 60% through the use of air, without employing water or thermal energy and without compromising aspects such as fabric quality. Its dynamic air flow extracts the microfibers from the garments and collects them in a containment bag for potential recycling, moving us closer towards a circular industry with zero waste. Each Air Fiber Washer will collect up to 325 kg of microfibers per year, depending on the type of fabric, and machine conditions such as loading and movement.

A technology placed at the entire textile industry’s disposal

This technology will be shared with the industry with no strings attached, as part of the effort of both companies to mitigate microfiber shedding.

Enrique Silla, President of Jeanologia, emphasized that the goal of Jeanologia, a leading company in the development of eco-efficient technologies, is to offer cost-neutral technological solutions to manufacturers, brands and retailers so that they can act immediately.

“Working with Inditex is a great experience and a source of pride. This initiative is just the first step in the mission we have set for ourselves to minimize the impact of microfiber shedding in textile manufacturing and in the product life cycle,” Silla said.

Javier Losada, General Director of Sustainability at Inditex, emphasized that “we must promote innovative solutions that allow us to respond to the challenges of our industry, such as microfiber shedding. This project with Jeanologia is an example of how we can collaborate with other industries to limit our impact on resources such as water right from the manufacturing stage.”

INDITEX

Inditex is a global fashion retail group, comprising seven brands (Zara, Pull&Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho and Zara Home) with a presence in over 200 markets. Its business model is focused on satisfying customer demand in a sustainable way. Inditex is committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2040.

Jeanologia: working for the world for over 25 years

Since 1994 their mission has been to create an ethical, sustainable and eco-efficient industry, marking a new era through sustainability, digitalization and automation.

Its MissionZero program transforms the way jeans are made to eliminate 100% of the discharge generated in the manufacture and finishing of Blue Jeans, from the fabric to the final garment.

The company is leading the transformation of the industry with its disruptive technologies: laser, G2 ozone, e-Flow, SmartBoxes, Colorbox and H2 Zero, capable of increasing productivity, reducing costs, water and energy consumption, and eliminating harmful emissions and discharges, guaranteeing zero pollution.

MASTER S.R.L. Introduce The New “Craftyflow” And “Craftyrope” For The Dyeing Of Denim Warps

MACHERIO, Italy — June 7, 2023 — While proudly celebrating 60 years since the starting of MASTER S.R.L., we are thrilled to announce the revolution represented by MASTER’s new machines “Craftyflow” and “Craftyrope” for the dyeing of denim warps, the only ones with the extraordinary possibility to work both according to traditional technique (natural atmosphere) and in nitrogen atmosphere.

These particular machines — thanks to their ingenious and exclusive dual-technology, to classic dyeing in air — can advantageously add to operate, under Nitrogen, the processes of bottoming, topping and sandwich, with final results as never achieved before.

Instead when operated under Nitrogen, more evolved and ecological system, with the use of less than half of dyeing boxes, the machines allow reduction of chemicals consumption:

  • hydrosulphite, by 75%,
  • caustic soda, by 80%
  • water, by 80%

With innovative dyeing results, that are unique and inimitable on traditional machines, achieved with the maximum sustainability.

This new achievement is the result of the continuous research and trials, that have made Master a pioneer in indigo dyeing, having realized, first in the world, in 1972, the machine mod. “slasher”.

Afterwards, continuing our evolution, in 2004, we have set another milestone with the realization of the innovative Genius modules, introducing the dyeing technique in nitrogen atmosphere.

Our nitrogen dyeing technology for denim warps has been adopted by some of the most important denim producers and it has been applied also to our groundbreaking “BINGO”, the unique flexible and advanced machine for fabric dyeing, suitable for indigo and sulphur colors.

In practice, these particular machines having the possibility to operate both in air and under Nitrogen, represent the state of the art, in terms of adding to tradition, innovation of processes and products, higher versatility, ease of use and most of all quality of results and sustainability.

MASTER is ready for the future and to support denim industry.

MASTER will not be present at ITMA, but we will be available to meet you at our offices and/or send you more details.

Results Of The 20th ITMF Global Textile Industry Survey

ZÜRICH, Switzerland — June 7, 2023 — The global business situation in the textile value chain deteriorated further in May 2023 and hit a new low at -36 percentage points (pp). Across the board companies are currently struggling with a poor order intake on the one hand and rising production costs on the other.

The industry is faced with the ingredients of a “perfect storm”. The majority of global textile value chain is expecting this current scenario to last until the end of 2023. Since the beginning of the year business expectations have been back to positive territory.

While in November 2022 they were still at -10 pp, they reached +22 pp in March. In May they fell slightly back to +18 pp. At the same time, companies’ expectation for the business climate in 6 months- time have been improving since November 2022. It is unclear if this growing optimism about the mid-term future is due to a believe that the situation cannot get much worse or anticipation for a well-founded economic normalization.

Order intake dropped further in May 2023 to a new low. Most regions and segments saw a fall in order intake, especially North & Central America and in the segment of fibers. “Weakening demand” remained the major concern for the global textile industry since July 2022. “Inflation” remains the second major concern worldwide and gained importance. Worries about “Geopolitics” have increased and now feature among the main concerns.

The survey also shows that the level of order cancellations remains low, albeit slightly higher than four months ago. 51% of respondents to the 20th GTIS recorded no order cancelations during the last 4 months (down from 53% in March and 58% in January). South America is the region with the highest level of order cancelations, segment-wise fiber producers were impacted the most.

Inventory levels fell slightly in May compared to March. South America recorded the highest inventory level. As segments, home textile producers as well as dyers/finishers/printers reported the highest inventory levels.

The GRS standard is an international, voluntary, full-product standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. The Taoyuan site produces colorants and additives for polyester fibers used in casual wear and sportswear applications that are expected to include recycled content.

The GRS-certified color and additive solutions contain a required percentage of pre-consumer or post-consumer recycled polyester primarily from recycled PET flakes. They are intended for use in the spin-dyeing, also called dope-dyeing, process which incorporates color and/or functional additives during yarn extrusion, saving on energy and water use.

In addition to the GRS accreditation, Avient’s Taoyuan site in Taiwan is also among the first provider of colorants and additives for spin-dyeing to be recognized as a bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER. The bluesign® label is a well-known label for textiles that certifies increased sustainable chemistry and high product safety in the textile industry. Brand owners, yarn manufacturers, and chemical suppliers can apply for certification.

The bluesign® SYSTEM PARTNER accreditation automatically provides the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) MRSL (Manufacturing Restricted Substance Lists) Conformance level 3 to the Taoyuan site for its fiber color and additive solutions. ZDHC’s goal is to effectively phase out hazardous substances from the textile supply chains. The site in Taiwan is in the process of including its color and additive solutions in the bluesign® FINDER.

Avient’s team of experts will be on-site at ITMA 2023, June 8-14, exhibiting their dyes, chemicals, finishes, and color & additives for spin-dyeing portfolios throughout the show at Fiera Milano Rho, Hall 5, booth B302, in Milan, Italy.
