British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) Members Giving Existing Machines Out In The Field An Much-Extended Life

MANCHESTER — September 18, 2023 — A number of member companies of the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) are making a very critical but seldom-acknowledged contribution to a more sustainable textile industry — giving existing machines out in the field an much-extended life.

“At this year’s ITMA 2023 it was clear that many new technologies are being developed that will do much to reduce resource consumption, but the reality is that faced with extremely tight margins, many textile companies are not in a position to invest in new capitally-intensive projects,” said BTMA CEO Jason Kent. “Outdated but mechanically sound machines used to be simply scrapped, with few other options, but this has now completely changed.”

Flawless mechanics

There are, for example an estimated 90,000 jet dyeing machines in operation worldwide and between 60 to 70 percent of them are outdated, which is something Adaptive Control Solutions is working to change.

The company’s widely-emulated Plant Explorer central control system sets the standard around the world for automation, with powerful features and ease of use, pulling together the control and monitoring of entire production plants and storing it in a standard Microsoft SQL Server database.

“We have successfully automated many makes and types of dyeing machine and found that the flexibility of PC-based controllers has allowed us to help customers in other parts of the dyeing and finishing plant as well, including with stenter frames and dryers,” says managing director Richard Armitage. “Our non-proprietary approach means that all this equipment can be monitored from a simple web- browser on the company network, while sophisticated integration and automation is going on in the background. Smart-coupling and joint-scheduling are standard features on these controllers, making it simple for supervisors and operators to run whatever batch sizes are needed.”

Radio frequency dryers fully rewired and equipped with new PLC control and sensors by Adaptive for FTS Dyers.

Longevity

In a recent project, FTS Dyers, based in Langholm, Scotland, has had its existing radio frequency dryers fully rewired and equipped with new PLC control and sensors by Adaptive. Many of the original parts on these machines have been replaced over the years, with their longevity down to a skilled team of engineers. Now, howoever, they have been fully automated and connect with similarly upgraded dyeing vessels and controllers all linked to a central computer system.

“Many of the machines we have successfully upgraded date back to the 1970s and some of the very to as far back as the 1950s,” Armitage said.

Working with fellow BTMA member Roaches International, Adaptive also supplies software packages and control panels for the automation of autoclaves and curing ovens used in the manufacturing of advanced composites. Many companies in the field of Formula 1, marine and aerospace have benefited from these upgrades.

Spinning machine upgrade by Garnett Controls.

Unrivaled

Garnett Controls has been a pioneer in the retrofit market since 1990, with an unrivalled number of installations in the fields of blending, carding, nonwovens and spinning. Well proven systems include the Microweigh XL and Rollaweigh weight control systems which have become industry standard.

In blending, the Lubric8 fibre lubrication system has been integrated into many existing blending plants to deliver the precise application of fibre lubricants, anti-static solutions and process additives.

The company also leads in the development and implementation of digital drive systems to replace conventional drives on textile and nonwoven machines, to achieve precise synchronisation with optimum energy efficiency. The latest retrofit drive systems come with sophisticated data collection to continually monitor and record performance whilst providing easily accessible historical information. The systems are supported both through a well-established network of agents and associates as well as directly via remote access.

“We’ve been installing the most advanced retrofit drive systems internationally for many years and we continue to develop our products as new technologies emerge,” says managing director Mark Baldwin. “Our retrofit systems are fully supported internationally by an experienced team and customers have reported achieving energy savings of up to 40% depending on the type of machine.”

Tatham TS Drive System carding machine retrofit.

Synchronous drive solutions

Tatham is another BTMA member offering retrofit services for OEM carding machines, crosslappers, needlelooms, blending systems, spinning frames and twisting and winding units.

The company’s TS Drive System is designed to run the motors at their optimum performance levels enabling considerable energy savings in the region of 30% to be achieved,

“TS Drive Technology is the most advanced product on the market for synchronous drive applications,” says director Tim Porritt. “It provides superior performance and accurate speed regulation even at low speeds.”

Moisture content

Moisture measurement and control systems which are retrofitted onto a wide range of production lines are the specialism of Streat Drycom. The Drycom system continually measures the moisture content of textiles and nonwovens during production and automatically controls the energy and/or speed of ovens and dryers in order to maintain the optimum moisture content.

“Moisture content is a critical factor in many sectors,” says managing director Alan Brydon. “Too much moisture in the product can result in processing issues which affect quality and can attract mildew. Too little moisture can damage fibres as well as being a significant and unnecessary cost of energy. Both affect true invoice weight which has a direct influence on profitability.”

Applications include ovens and dryers in the field of natural fibre scouring, cotton bleaching, latex curing in carpet backing, yarn setting lines and spray systems. Drycom is unique in that specific calibrations can be derived for different fibre types, additives and environmental conditions, thereby always providing optimum accuracy, efficiency and control.

“Most machines already in operation worlwide function flawlessly mechanically and BTMA members can offer many options via upgrades and automation to secure their production going forward, ensuring a sufficient margin of profit is retained by keeping them going,” says Kent in conclusion. “The cost-effective longevity of retrofitted machines makes sound and sustainable sense.”

New Material Recovery Facility Opened in Banyuwangi Under Project STOP’s Expansion Program

Government representatives and Project STOP Partners

BANYUWANGI, EAST JAVA, Indonesia — September 18, 2023 — On Saturday, 16 September 2023, Project STOP and Banyuwangi Regent, Ipuk Fiestiandani, inaugurated one of Indonesia’s largest Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) in Songgon Municipality. Built in collaboration with the regional government of Banyuwangi, the facility is a significant milestone towards establishing Indonesia’s premier regency-led circular waste management system.

Key highlights:

  • The MRF will manage waste collection and sortation as well as materials to be recycled from households in the region.
  • Its daily processing capacity is up to 84 tonnes of waste.
  • Anticipated to create approximately 200 jobs by 2025 and service over 250,000 residents.
  • By 2025, the MRF aims to collect annually 23,000 tonnes of waste, including 3,300 tonnes of plastic.

Co-founded by Borealis and Systemiq, with broad support from National and Regional Governments, international institutions, academia and private sector, Project STOP Banyuwangi focuses on delivering measurable impact on the ground. Since its inception in 2017, it has steadily extended across the entire Banyuwangi Regency. The new MRF is part of its Banyuwangi Hijau expansion plan, aiming to positively impact the lives of up to 2 million individuals, across all Project STOP city and regional partnerships, create 1,000 full-time jobs and annually collect 230,000 tonnes of waste, including 25,000 tonnes of plastic.

“Plastic leakage to sea, land and air can be prevented by working closely with all stakeholders. Through the Project STOP Banyuwangi initiative, we work hand-in-hand to make tangible improvements to the health of the local environment and people living in Banyuwangi,” said Ipuk Fiestiandani, Banyuwangi Regent. “We hope this infrastructure can establish the implementation of a circular waste management system and become a benchmark to other regions in Indonesia.”

For the MRF’s construction, the Banyuwangi Regency Government allocated more than 1.5 hectares of land in the first phase of the Project in Banyuwangi. The circular waste system is designed to support the implementation of the Banyuwangi government’s Solid Waste Master Plan, co-developed by Banyuwangi Agencies, the Clean Oceans through Clean Communities (CLOCC) Program and Project STOP.

“Since we founded Project STOP together with Systemiq in 2017, we established waste management systems in Muncar, Pasuruan and Jembrana as first phase. Based on the learnings done in the first three cities, we will now expand the reach of Project STOP to the Banyuwangi region. Beyond that, we hope that Project STOP serves as inspiration and blueprint for other projects to accelerate the establishment of a circular economy and to avoid waste leakage into the environment,” commented Thomas Gangl, Borealis CEO.

“This second Project STOP Program in Banyuwangi underscores our enduring partnership with the Regency and other local government agencies, with increased impact and benefits for the local environment and population. We intend this to be a beacon for Regencies across the country and thank our funders and partners for their ongoing commitment,” said Ben Dixon, Head of Materials and Circular Economy at Systemiq.

The state-of-the-art MRF is equipped to handle both organic and inorganic waste. Organic waste will be processed into compost, while inorganic waste will be sorted and transferred to the recycling industry.

Project STOP Banyuwangi’s achievements can be largely attributed to its successful collaborations and close partnerships with various Indonesian government bodies, such as the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs (CMMAI), the National Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), the Banyuwangi regency government and Project STOP Strategic Partners including the Norwegian Government, Accenture, Borouge, USAID and Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G).

Lectra Expands Furniture On Demand To The Mexican Market

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — September 14, 2023 — Lectra, a major global player in the fashion, automotive and furniture markets, today announced that Furniture On Demand by Lectra will be expanding to Mexico to support the acceleration of nearshoring due to supply chain woes and economic factors. This turnkey solution covers the entire furniture manufacturing workflow, from order processing to cutting. By manufacturing after order reception, companies are able to improve flexibility and offer a larger and broader catalog of products.

“The furniture industry has undergone a major transformation post pandemic as more and more products are being made to order and customization continues to grow in importance for consumers. As a result of this increase in demand, customers in all markets are rethinking their supply chain and turning to Industry 4.0 solutions such as Furniture On Demand,” said Leonard Marano, Lectra’s President, Americas. “Furniture On Demand is an answer to the economic complexities currently faced by the industry all the while improving speed, quality and traceability in the entirety of the manufacturing process.”

With the emergence of new paths to supply chain, Mexico is primed for more demand in nearshoring, which would enable faster times to market given the proximity to the end customer. As this trend continues to accelerate, Mexico manufacturers find themselves in a time of transformation as they shift from mass production, which produces large quantities of standardized products, to a made to order model. Companies will need to rely on a partner who can help them scale by offering customization, speed and quality.

In response, Furniture On Demand leverages Industry 4.0 technology in order to further streamline processes for Mexico based manufacturers by automatically capturing styles, materials and components information of the product, directly from the customer’s order and assisting in the production process from start to finish by utilizing:

  • Automation — Automation handles repetitive every day tasks. Manufacturers are now able to automate the pairing of multiple orders for max fabric yield, the cutting of plain fabric and fabric management, helping increase the overall speed of production.
  • The digital fabric library — The digital fabric library is able to instantly pull order fabric and its specifications for quick processing.
  • Order system integration — This integration quickly pulls all pieces of the order – pattern, fabric, configuration and sends to cutting in a matter of minutes.
  • Optimized cost per piece — Next generation part nesting and automated markers with real fabric width use the power of cloud computing to ensure maximum fabric yield, quality and savings.

By manufacturing after order reception, furniture companies are able to avoid overstocking their inventories and reduce waste, all the while increasing their sustainability efforts. Companies will also be able to actively combat labor shortages currently facing the industry by limiting the dependence on expertise thanks to digitalizing manual tasks.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic served as the initial catalyst for customization, leading to 78 percent of consumers worldwide deciding that home was their haven, the industry has continued to see an increase in demand for made to order products and there will continue to be significant moments throughout time that will require on demand production such back to school shopping or the purchase of a new home.

With many solutions already implemented worldwide, leading furniture brands such as Zanotta, Karimoku, Neptune, King Hickory, Leisure Creations are using, Furniture On Demand to improve the efficiency of their day-to-day operations while reducing repetitive tasks, fabric, paper and plastic.

“What Lectra offered that I hadn’t seen before was a beginning-to-end process from the order input to shipping the customer the furniture. At the end of the process, everything was tied together,” said Chris Williams, owner and president of Leisure Creations, an Alabama-based manufacturer of commercial pool and patio furniture.

Plastics Industry Association Launches Recycling Is Real Advocacy Campaign

WASHINGTON — September 14, 2023 — The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has launched a new advocacy campaign called “Recycling is Real”, dedicated to promoting and defending plastic recycling in America. The campaign will provide content to help elected officials and policymakers understand that recycling is a vital link of the sustainability and circularity chain, enabling them to make more well-informed decisions about recycling resources for their constituents.

The campaign has also been created in an effort to put an end to false narratives claiming that recycling doesn’t happen or is a “myth.” Anti-recycling organizations and their allies have created a coordinated campaign against plastic recycling in an effort to advance their anti-plastics agenda and it is eroding faith in our nation’s ability to recycle.

“Plastic recycling is very real, and it happens every single day across America,” said PLASTICS’ President and CEO Matt Seaholm. “The Recycling is Real campaign allows both the public and lawmakers to see for themselves the extraordinary role recycling plays in the circular economy, making it undeniable that recycling is not only effective but is a feasible and economical way to achieve our shared sustainability goals.”

PLASTICS, on behalf of the entire plastics industry supply chain, is committed to sustainability and ensuring plastic material remains in our circular economy, and out of the environment. Recycling is an integral part of achieving this goal, and the industry knows America needs to recycle more. Recently, recycling has come under attack from those who wish to reduce or eliminate the production of plastic altogether. Recycling is Real will show how recycling happens, where it happens and introduce the people who make it happen. This initial launch will spotlight recycling efforts taking place at Ultra-Poly, Placon, Novolex and MAAG, with additional videos launching in the coming weeks and months.
